It added great QOL stuff so you don't have to carry around an HM slave on your team, they actually changed the formula by replacing gyms with island trials , the map is four big islands instead of just a series of corridors, it has the best starters since gen 1, they added cool cosmic horror pokemon and other actually cool new pokemon like Mimikyu. And the story is actually good, the characters are all well designed and well written, gym leaders are part of the story instead of just waiting to be battled in their gyms. I could go on, it's the best pokemon game
