Probably wait until they make a based mod for the new version. I haven't played DQ3, but DQ1 and 2 emulated were cool to see how classic the franchise is. But DQ3 seems more like a "You had to be there". I'd rather play the remake with the original vision modded in as my 1st experience.

The fan translations of the SNES remakes of DQ1, 2, 3 are the best versions of those games. You could also try the Game Boy Color versions, but those have shittier graphics. As for 4, 5, and 6 there are the DS remakes. 7 was ported to the 3DS and fixed the terrible intro somewhat. 8 is best played on the PS2. 9 is forgettable. 10 is Jap-only. 11 can be played on Steam or Switch.

They are actually very high quality translations for the time. It's not like early Final Fantasy's awkward "spoony bard" type of shit. The only complaints are from die-hard purists who hate that some names are changed (eg. Loto and Lola were altered to Erdrick and Gwaelin) and that the pafu-pafu jokes were removed.

You should just play the new remakes and use the restoration mod if you're butthurt.

If you cant help shitting your pants over the minor changes that have been present in english dragon quest releases for the past 20 years then get the SFC or GB versions, GB versions usually have more content but look worse than SFC, don't force yourself to play the NES versions.

3 is a great game and doesn't feel outdated at all but 2 is a bit outdated and unbalanced boring mess.

The new remake will probably make 2 a much more interesting game considering they said they're adding a bunch of the new stuff to the games and probably flesh it out to be the game that it should have been.

1 is absolute ass game no matter which version you play, product of its time, sure when it released it was amazing but 8 of the 9-10 hours it takes to beat the game is unironically grinding, its a 1 party member rpg where you simply cannot progress unless you have enough health and the right healing spells to survive fights, which 2 fixes thanks to having multiple party members.
I expect the remake of 1 to still be awful to play unless they completely remake the entire game which is unlikely and why they're bundling it with 2.

It's not "far more", it's a couple of reskinned superbosses, some pointless fanservice cutscenes and some 2D-only shit. If there's one thing DQ11 didn't need, it was more content, the third act is basically 30 hours of post-game. People should pirate the original PC release and use the orchestral music patch, the visual mods for 11S don't recreate a lot of the most impressive stuff in the original release.

If you're on PC or a modded Switch, you can mod the mobile graphics to DQ 1 and 2, that makes it look way better and my recommendation because the SFC fantranslation is buggy
The guy that was did the mod for 1 and 2 cancelled it for 3 so you either would need to play the Switch unmodded ugly version or the mobile version (which you can emulate)
