Merry Christmas 1999 !

DK64, really?
>>

Unironically DK64 is funni hydra in this case.
Rayman 2 is excellent
Adventure's presentation and gameplay is godlike.
DK64.... Just another Rareware 3D collectathon...

I played Sonic 3 on the new e-machine that Christmas. Anyone else old enough to have memories of 1999? I played Lego Racers on this bad boy too.

DK64 is an excellent 3D plateformer of its era. In terms of ambition, it's a kind of missing link between Kazooie and Tooie. Was an excellent surprising when I played it. Collectathon err... whether you like or not. I do when the game is agreeable to play with.
Rayman 2 (and later 3) are the best ever linear 3D plateformers.
Sonic Adventure... well... on a pure aesthetic aspect, art direction and OST (the best part of the game actually) are enjoyable but its gameplay, QA, camera, gamedesign are pure horseshit. I replayed it this summer it was a pain to do. Telling the game design gap between Nintendo/Rare plateformers as abysmal would be an understatement. Yes Sonic Adventure is fast, so fast it is 60 bullshits per second.

DK64 is a fantastic game. The only thing people complain about for it (too much to collect) wasn't a problem at the time because we simply didn't have many games in those days, it was probably the only new game you were gonna get for months.

Rayman 2 on Dreamcast was released in March 2000.

Btw, having played the PC, Dreamcast and PS2 versions, the latter's the best, the definitive version of R2.

Low effort trolling here mate
>>
>>695417231
2 isn't linear at all, it has tons of backtracking compared to 3, which is shit for that reason.
>>

This
>>695415820
>>695415584
The backtracking is rugged, we all agree, especially in Fungi Forest where you also have the day/night cycle. That and the bonus barrels are bad. The rest of the game is pretty solid. It gets harder later on, the collectables aren't even that badly spread out, even if the Kongs themselves have minimal variety amongst them there is plenty of gameplay and challenge variety, and it's got a great amount of content. Dk64 is the black aheep of Rare's 64 library.
>>
>>695422345
Okay but SA is a terrible game.

Everyone's has its own tastes. I understand some won't like collectathons.
SA is too flawed by critical aspects for a plateformer, including camera management, level and game design, gameplay, finesse of movement, etc. Thou shalt not put Lanky Kong and Big the Cat on par.

>>
>>695415427
Inaccurate since Sonic Adventure is better than those two.
>>
>>695424030
Its level are built in a linear fashion, with a defined end. They are not small open worlds as Super Marios and Rare.

Backtracking here is roughly "go back to this level to enter the Cave of bad dreams". Backtracking is much more a thing in open world plateformers where you have to explore the worlds.

Rayman 3 imo is a better game because of its scoring system, DA (somewhat inherited from R2 unsurprisingly), writing/acting (original french version), global feel of rush and I just feel it more agreeable to play in hands. OST is just mega and is one of the best ever to me.
>>
>>695424350
I can walk on my hands. What can YOU do ?
>>
>>695415427
Pretty sure in 1999 I was playing command and conquer.
>>
>>695424278
>Okay but SA is a terrible game
False. It is flawed, yes, but not bad at all. Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Gamma are all fun to play. Knuckles stages are short with the ability to hunt 3 Emerald shards at once, the only timea the levels are actually large enough to not be clustered up together are Radical Highway and Red Mountain.
Sega tried to make SA an everything game. Amy is slow, but her levels were pretty cinematic and responsive in a time when such horror elements were only used a select handful of times. Sega with games like Il Bleed or their fishing simulators tried to incorporate those concepts into SA. I'll totally agree Big and Amy suck to play as but they're modes are so short, especially Big's levels which are
>find Froggy
>catch him
Hot Shelter is the only time you actually have to work to get to him.
It's the best Sonic game, no other 3d Sonic game makes spin dashing and using thst momentum so fun to play as Sonic in. You genuinley FEEL like Sonic when zipping sround in a comtrolled way. SA2 was also a stellar game but didn't have the freedom and level design to accommodate such movement.

>>695424989
Doing rank A levels with Big is one pain in the arse. Moreover, moving him feels like driving a semi-truck in a hiking trail. Plus *that* voice. Why ?

Yeah Knuckles is the most interesting character to play, both gameplay and gamefeel. Tails is pointless as his levels goal is to go faster than Sonic (wouldn't speed be Sonic's gameplay only ?) and his ability is overshadowed by Knuckles' which is much more fun to play. Anyway, controls of all characters are imprecise and tedious, some are just in a magnificent way let's say.

Moreover, after re-playing it last summer it came to me that most of Sonic games are kinda bad compared to Nintendo/Rare's, either its 2D or 3D. If it's the best Sonic game, I cannot imagine how are the others then.

Incredible that Rare made four platformers on the N64 and not a single one of them is actually fun to move around in. They never recaptured the simple but effective joy of doing roll jumps in DKC.
Being their first 3D games isn't even an excuse cause Mario 64 predates all of them and shows how to make moving in a 3D space fun and dynamic.

Sonic Adventure was fucking awesome as a kid. Sure it seems flawed as fuck now but at the time it was pure undistilled soul. You had to be there. Even now I'd rather play Sonic Adventure over DK64 (or as I remember it, "Collect Shit Until You Die 64").
>>
>>695426091
Banjo-Tooie is one of the best 3D plateformers ever. That feel of connections betweend worlds is one of the many little things that make it fun to play. Not to mention the world design, the controls precision and responsiveness, the mega OST, the writing, the lifespan, the technical mastery. It's the perfect late game for the N64's life.

Don't get me wrong : as mentioned SA's OST is great and the only successful aspect of the game. Some tracks are *really* great pieces of composition. My favourite among many is Pleasure Castle... for Twinkle Park (talk about a name), the opening track for Twinkle Park level.

I disagree. Remember Sonic Adventure was a game from 1998.

This might seem janky as fuck nowadays but it was impressive at the time:

The ONLY one that sucks to play is Conker. Challenging but when you're fighting controls or taking fall damage from everything you suddenly don't appreciate the challenges. The frying pan is the worst weapon in all of 3d platforming and is artificially inflating its dopamine impact by the fact its unintuitive swing speed and momentum cancelling makes the thrill of landing the hit that much more incredible. They remade this game like twice, you'd think they'd know better than to make everything control fuckily.

DK64 is no good even with the kong switching mod because the actual content is largely boring. Rayman 2's level design is an extremely mixed bag with not enough focus on pure platforming. Sonic Adventure has whack physics and the level design isn't fully realized due to hardware limitations.

I'll take SA1, no contest. There's a lot more of that game that I actually enjoy than there is of the other two.

Also, I love Godzilla. Ghidorah is my favorite.

Collectathons aren't inherently bad, but DK64 was the moment when Rare got lost in the sauce and made a game where all you do is pick shit up or do awful minigames for more baubles.
Sonic Adventure is a 3D platformer where you actually do platforming in a variety of different ways, plus some fishing.

You're just straight up admitting that you're unable to look at these games objectively, and letting your association with Nintendo color your opinion.
If you play Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and all you can think is "Nintendo games are better than this", then your brain is just broken, friend.
>>
>>695415427
This was my Christmas except it was Sonic and House of the Dead 2
>>
>>695438262
Sonic games are definitely tough to get into if you didn't grow up with them. People are used to more conventional Mario-style platforming where you have total control and agency of your movement whereas in Sonic you have to learn how to exploit the physics to get where you wanna go. And this isn't a flaw by any means, it's obviously part of the intended design. It can take a while to crack that barrier but once you do the games become enthralling to master.
>>
>>695438558
you have 100% control over your speed in Sonic games, they are just more committal and punishing with it when compared to Mega Man or Mario.
>>
>>695415427
DK64 was so good that it killed the DK 3d forever.
DK Jungle Beat, which was a really good game with an awful way of controlling, was a return to 2d.
At the best, we have some mockup projects on Dreams, but at practice, we'll never know.
