The issue is the inconsistency of the textures. The foot pedals and instruments look good, but then everything else is blurry/smeared/compressed. Artifacts are visible from across the map and most of the environments are corridors.

turns out it was a bug that was preventing the highest textures/models from loading.

OP here, i only ever played games at highest visual settings unless the framerates dipped below 10 regularly. The settings were stuck at lowest. Had to delete everything and verify to get it fixed, which nuked my saves too. Thanks valve. The vortignauts still don't look like I remember though. This is a bipedal mass of snot.and I'm posting here because holy shit trying to find anything relevant to this on steam or google is absolutely pointless. thousands upon thousands of maymay guides.
