Tomino's looked at stuff like Demon Slayer (which I've never watched/don't care for) and called its production team lightning in a bottle and that in all of his 50+ years directing anime he wished he could get a team like that.The issue is that newer anime production staff are bad directors/never get into directing. That's literally it. Everybody wants to be an artist, an animator, an in-betweener. Nobody wants to be a director and most of the newblood directors are either really uninspired or sakugateens.

Yeah obviously it's kind of stilted, but the storyboarding of it is miles ahead of a lot of what we get today. A lot of modern anime has very high line counts and manages to stay consistently on-model and is even better animated in a technical sense but lacks skillful and unique direction. Not all modern anime has this problem but a lot more of it does compared to anime of the 20th century.
