The remaster for SR1 is actually pretty good, it just made everything look better and smoother while preserving the original artstyle. It didn't ruin anything or downgrade anything.
But replaying SR1 as an adult honestly soured me on the game a bit. The world and atmosphere was cool and mysterious just like the first time but holy hell navigating the world and playing in it kinda sucks. There's endless tedious block puzzles, traversal is frustrating, the FOV is tiny and the map doesn't help with navigation, etc. I've played a lot of metroidvanias and honestly compared to them SR1 is a tedious metroidvania, even though the interconnectedness is cool.
The story is great of course but it feels like the game is 5% story 95% trying to flip a block while spiders drops from the ceiling to interrupt me.

It's funny how I used to hate on SR2 as a teenager because I thought it went too far in streamlining and simplifying the gameplay.. but now that I'm playing through everything again I ended up liking it better than SR1. LoK's main appeal was always the story and dialogue, and now it's a relief that the main meat of the game really is about story and dialogue instead of endless block puzzles, and the story really reaches its peak here. Shame the remaster kind of ignored SR2, it made very few changes and most of those are sidegrades or even downgrades (especially Mobius he looks awful and less expressive)

Does the new day/night cycle seem broken for anyone else? Ever since I got the Reaver from Kain it's been ridiculously dark in exterior areas, borderline impossible to see at all in some places, and I have no idea when or if day is ever coming back. Pic rel is just outside the silenced cathedral.

The only thing good about Soul Reaver is the PS1 art style, the voice acting and maybe some of the story (cutscenes). The remake removes the charming PS1 graphics, so you're stuck playing a shittier version of the game.

The only problem I've seen with it is that the transitions between interiors (with static lighting) and exteriors (affected by day/night cycle) are a hard cut-off point in the environment and it looks kinda rough. But I didn't see any visual effects that didn't work because of it. If there's broken visuals it's probably an independent issue that has nothing to do with night-time

The remaster is solid, but it needs work. I notice flickering geometry here and there, mostly around the edges of the screen. There are seams in the environments where I don't recall there being any before. Some objects, like a dead body near the start of Raziel's Stronghold has transparency applied to it in the classic graphics, for some reason. Shadows are improperly cast by the cocoons in the Silenced Cathedral. The surface of the water around the pistons in the Lighthouse area is missing entirely after activating them. And the day and night cycle just makes shit too dark.
I hope they continue to work on things post-launch because this could be the definitive way to play Soul Reaver if they do. Until then, Dreamcast is still king.

There is no reason for the series to continue beyond Defiance because fate has been successfully broken. It is only a matter of time until the Elder God is killed. I honestly find this ending more satisfying than having any definitive conclusion, plus there's isn't a Raziel/Kain dynamic anymore.

The time was figuring out how to make it work with the memory limitations. The cut levels literally couldn't render fully with 2mb memory limit. The day/night cycle had knock-on effects with environmental lighting that artists would have to iron out by hand and required much more disc memory for added textures.
