Why didn't the creators make another VN as good as this one? And other visual novel questions you ask yourself.

Because unknown to most underages, everything about S;G was taken from the real urban legends and stories it uses in the game. For example, the theory of time travel Kurisu presents in the game and how the Kerr Black Holes work aren't made up for the game; they are how the real poster John Titor claimed them to be IRL.
Also, Nitro+ only worked with them for Head and S;G and when they left so did the writing and editorial talent.
>>
I just started Process Of Elimination and it's very entertaining so far (just finished chapter 1). It's scratching that Danganronpa itch I've had for a few years now. I wish more developers jumped on the Dangan bandwagon and made mystery VNs. I don't care if they'd be inferior or considered cheap copies. I'm an addict for anime-y exaggerated designs with murder mysteries and an overlapping story with some big reveal. It does something to my almonds

God I fucking wish Umineko stuck with Battler and Beatrice doing a bunch of murder mystery battles with the cast instead of going all in on the magic shit. The first episode is good for establishing the cast and how there could be a magical aspect to the murders or how Kinzo got all of his wealth. The second episode is also pretty good for Beatrice constantly taunting Battler on how he can't prove magic wasn't involved, but I dropped it by the third episode.

MLA relies entirely in like 3 scenes to salvage its dogshit pacing. Takeru going back and forth being a bitch and "manning up" only to be a bitch the next time a beta farts too loud gets tiresome fast. Overusing the trick of giving char development to the next one dying so many times you see it coming is very poor writing, and quite counterproductive since you see it coming and actively stop giving a fuck whenever someone tells your their entire fucking life story.
Despite those massive red flags, the good parts make it worth reading, though barely.

Yes, and I love the original so I went in ready to despise it. I'm an Arcfag so I am a little mad they didn't give Arc her epilogue in this one, but everyone thinks that will come at the end of the Far Side routes, and that's probably correct.
You need to read the original, though. This isn't to catch newfags up, it's for people who have read the original and know what was supposed to happen vs what does happen now.

Higurashi is like this shit too. Good mystery setup, but the manner which they were resolved is awful. I get it, magic and looping timeline was obvious from the beginning but episodes 7 and 8 were so unsatisfying. Even 5 and 6 weren't that good imo.

Why are VNs so linear with minimal branching? You'd think a genre that's 90% text would allow way more branching than games like Walking Dead which are otherwise effectively VNs but animated, yet they often just have you slotted into a path early on then follow it through to the end. Why not have a VN with stat checks and whatnot?

I gave Muramasa a try but it's so fucking boring, and I didn't even reach the parts most people make fun of.
Once you understand that every single character besides the MC solely exists to either get raped by others or die gruesomely for shock value, it loses any and all stakes and becomes incredibly repetitive.

Narahara can't write for shit, you have to go into Muramasa with low expectations or you won't enjoy it at all.

Chuunige in a nutshell
>>
>>697935816
Most old nitroplus titles have a coherent story to offer alongside the edge.
Saya no Uta is a decent entry level VN, and Demonbane, Gekkou no Carnevale and Kikokugai are extremely well written chuunige.
Muramasa's writing is all over the place and contradicts itself on multiple occasions to a degree where you have to assume that the protagonist is constantly offering unreliable narration for absolutely no reason to make any sense out of the rushec true ending.
>>697936028
It would be if it actually was on purpose.

The entire ending was so bad that I consider it non-canon.
No idea how you can drop the ball that hard, nitroplus should've lent Narahara some editors when he was clearly struggling with writing past the common route.
>>697936439
It's the author's very, very thinly veiled fetish.
It actually might be the artist's fault, he normally draws scat and is an unashamed NTRfag.

You'll never find it, but the manga was the best way to enjoy higurashi. It went into so much more detail that the VN and anime only wish they could've.

>>697918750
That's the problem, they tried and couldn't do it. Steins was only the second VN made by mages and that's where they've peaked. They're self-aware that steins is their money maker and that's why they keep coming back to it. They came close with the common route of chaos child and robotics notes, but steins still holds supreme. Then with the recent failures of 0, dash, and anonymous, the whole series is questionable.

>>697922551
psycho nea

>>697923872
It's BOGGED DOWN with dozens of hours of superfluous dialogue. All the chapters are long as fuck and realistically only take a few hours to get the point across and move on. It also sufferes from randomly leaping between scenarios. Chapter 4 continuously jumps between angie in the future, angie in the past, the witches room, and the game. It's mind numbing, I finally tapped out at the end of chapter 5 and have yet to get back to it. I somehow managed to come across the manga volumes 15-22, I'm considering colecting the series and reading it rather than continuing the VN.

He is living in denial constantly and actively looking for penance and an escape from the consequences from the choices he made in any form he can get in every route but the true one (and even in that one he can reject responsibility).
the whole point is that he says he "is a demon" but can't walk the walk, it's why Sorimachi hates him: he's contradictory at every turn and true to no creed.

Let me complain a bit about English mystery VNs. They completely miss the point of why the Jap ones are interesting, which is a combination of character focus + strong presentation + insane plot twists. The one most highly acclaimed on /v/ is Sekimeiya, which is boring as balls. It focuses on pure mechanical mystery with plot/characters being an afterthought. There was another circus murder mystery which was similarly boring, but it focused purely on characters and nothing else. It's like these Western writers pick a single aspect they like from VNs and make the entire game centered on it, forgetting these things are supposed to be whole products and appeal to people.

All the characters act and speak like robots, and who are able to let their minds wander for 3 minutes real time in milliseconds

The French gave it a shot with Suhoshin, and it was decent.
Why can every country make okay to good VNs and American just cannot?
I am all for non-Japanese VNs because I am a plot enjoyer and there's just not a lot out there any more, but other people are stepping in to try to fill the void.

Nirvana Initiative is bad, but in the same way all of Uchikoshi's games are. The entire story is based around a retarded/contrived narrative that lies to the player in order to justify a wacky plot twist.

Hi friends I'm thinking on picking a 10-15~Hours VN in terms of duration during the steam sales. I'm choosing between:
-Ninki Seiyuu
-Kamiyaba
-Parquet
-Karakara 2
-Planetarian
Since these are cheap. I still need to check if there is a jp steam patch for the first two. I'm hesitant about Karakara since it's been like 7 years and still no news about the third game.
I'm planning on reading them in Japanese btw. I accept recommendations.
Thank you and take care

The problem is that the narrative lying to the player served no real purpose here. In his other works there is a relevant plot reason for it to occur.
It was forced. Like he felt compelled to use his standard twist even if it didn't really fit this time.

The game presents it self as having two different routes with each investigator. It turns out one of them is actually two different people and the routes are alternating between past and present. This has no actual bearing on the plot other "oh look it was split in half just like the victims"
>>
>>697957608
In Nirvana Initiative you play as both Ryuki and Mizuki to solve a mystery that spans over the course of six years. Ryuki's sections take place 6 years ago, while Mizuki's are in the present. Except when they aren't, every other day takes place in the other timeframe, so Ryuki has day one of his story in the past, the next day is in the present, and the next day is back in the past. Mizuki's is the opposite and the reason why she has the same model in the past is because you're playing as a clone of Mizuki who is also named Mizuki. Ryuki's days in the present work because he's a literal schizo and is suddenly thinking about events from 6 years ago.

Problem is it's not really relevant to the plot and it artificially restricts when half the cast can show up. Relevant characters are just not allowed to show up if they want to keep the "trick" going.
Once the trick simply cannot go any further with how the plot is going though, a random side character just outright explains it to the player before the finale. That's honestly the worst sin in my eyes.

To give you an idea of how the trick is used, here's one example from the game. On one day as Ryuki you are looking into the murder case, and wind up a the big corporations headquarters to see their CEO dead. This is surprising because you met them yesterday. You then go underground to a cult worship area, and spot the culprit, who is unidentifiable because it would spoil the killer that early. You chase them, but eventually a bridge collapses and you're unable to give any further chase. The next day your boss is chewing you out for such an enormous fuck up that it not only is risking Ryuki his job, but also the entire department of your part of the police is under fire because of how badly you did.
As the player you might be wondering why there's such an extreme reaction to losing the culprit's trail. The answer is the day you chased the culprit was in the present. The CEO has not been murdered yet, and Ryuki never goes to visit the building in the past to keep the twist hidden. What Ryuki actually did during the day that was skipped over was accidentally shoot a civilian with no provocation. You find out about this when you play that day as the second Mizuki. In the present Ryuki isn't even officially on the case because he's on leave due to mental health problems. Him investigating the case was his issues flaring up causing him to suddenly act as the day he met the CEO six years ago happened yesterday, so he was chasing very old leads.

>that VN
The most unforgettable horror porn game I've ever played. No other game had a bunch of elementary schoolers gangbang a teenage girl against a wall. And the teenage girl loved it. No other game I've played had a 17 year old bishonen guy drink a 14 year old girl's piss and chase her down the hall to rape her, only to wind up getting anally raped by a 32 year old fat man. I still remember the scene where a 16-17 girl was hiding under a bed as her same age best friend was having sex with that same 32 year old fat guy on top. She heard every moan, bed shake and sound. In the wrong end she was discovered under the bed by her friend and made to join. A most terrifying scene was when an unwilling girl relives another girl's sex memories. The girl in the memory consented but the reliving girl didn't. It didn't matter that she was mentally screaming, her body in the memory did all the motions and actions as in history. It's like mind control rape except the victim was fully aware. Another scene the same girl and a friend were almost raped in a magic sex ritual, saved by the girl's older sister, and the backlash made the older sister want to rape her younger sister and friend.

The loli in this pic is freakishly lewd and once disguised herself as a teenage girl, fucked a boy until he nearly came, transformed back saying
>You thought you were having sex with a highschooler weren't you? I'm an elementary schooler all along!
And leglocks that boy, forcing him to cum inside her unprotected, when he screams in fear upon learning this. This isn't even getting into the tentacles, the gay sex, the lesbian sex, the incest, the sequel's mother/daughter lesbian scene, etc. The first chapter alone contains lots of lesbian sex scenes with an unavoidable girl masturbating in the bathroom. Truly horror is intrinsically connected with sexuality.

I'm actually not sure. ZTD's twist does at least serve a purpose, but it's kept hidden by Q team learning Sean's name off screen and conveniently never referring to him as Sean until after you expose Q as Delta. I personally find that really annoying since it relies on characters acting incredibly strange, there is no reason why Eric and Mira would never refer to Sean by his name during all of the segments you play as Q team. Nirvana Initiative on the other hand is a pointless twist, but the characters themselves aren't doing anything bizarre, it's just the fault of the game's structure. I think I hate them both equally for different reasons.

It's a "deconstruction" of the murder mystery / whodunnit genre in VN form, if you desire to solve the mystery by asking "who, what, where, why?" you are an "intellectual rapist" (quoted from the VN, not a joke) according to Ryu07. You have to care about the feelings of the not only the victims but of the murderers... it turns into a giant metanarrative. With 3 or 4 layers max, I think? Ryu07 missed the boat, this was done in the 80s in japanese mystery circles with 'shinhonkaku'.

I'd say if you haven't played or watched Higurashi no Naku Koro (play the first arc VN, it's pretty short - the Studio Deen adaptation in case of anime, 2 seasons, very good) then I'd hold off on Umineko.

People either love or hate Umineko. If you play, prepare to take notes to solve the mysteries. Can you defeat Ryu07? Can you endure his prose? Will you care about his characters? Can the catbox be solved????/

I personally dislike Umineko. Ryu07 was a one-hit wonder with Higurashi by my estimation. I don't understand why you'd make a mystery story with heavy anti-mystery elements and being hostile to a large chunk of the fanbase. It falls victim of its format - serialized VN. I think it has some cool ideas & a cool premise however I think it would be a much better story if you could make choices. I believe there is only one choice to make late in EP8 when you play as Ange, which just alters the ending.

But please don't let Umineko ruin Higurashi for you. Higurashi as a story is actually good.
Overall, I don't enjoy VNs typically. I wish a clash of genres came together and there existed VNs where you have actual choices or combining point & click adventure games - lots of possibilities there.
