This game and it's spin-off's/sequels (also all super cheap on sale now) are incredibly fun time trial shooters. It's remade, so it brought newer systems to modernize it, but at its core it's still P3, so going from P5R to P3R would probably be noticeable when you see the older style of dungeons and Social Links. Still, the differences aren't big enough to worry, and the three games are great. Persona 4 is a great starting point and it was the starting point of most fans before P5 came out.

It felt a bit dated even when it released as you'll first notice with the UI/menus, feels a bit typical of Koei games. You might like 2 more if you like more open world games as story is done/progressed this way while side missions are still done via MH quest hub. I don't recall anything linking the two games together off the top of my head. Big difference that I remember between the two were balance changes/new weapon(s)/open world and the addition of the claw mechanic called demon hand. The biggest thing is that it's not like MH in the combat department, eg. while positioning can be important at times specially when they start throwing multi big mons it'll still feel more like a hack'n'slash. Most monsters you'll probably feel like you're fighting the same way throughout most of the game. Builds are based on the 3 Mitama/spirits you get in the game with some slight changes in how you play your weapon. If you don't have any interest in anything mentioned just skip.
