Nah, I got decent enough art skills, I just have no clue about coding and I am shit at socializing so I can't rope in other people to handle the shit I can't do in a game project.

I’m a chronic procrastinator. On the off chance I do start something and become productive, I end up taking a break, usually after working myself to the bone, and the break never ends.

I'm learning 3d now because I want to make a walking sim/waifu game. Miside was pretty much what i envisioned but way more. I still want to have even a quarter of the interactivity in it but at a much smaller scope. I sometimes think about it but I also know that anything I would want to make would be very niche and so it would purely have to be for the fun of making it and not for any hopes of profit
and making a game is a lot of work and playing games is much more fun so it will never happen. Still fun to think about sometimes.

You could be thinking of Dark Sector. Warframe is basically a sequel to it.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_Sector

Never played it myself so I dunno how closely it resembles warframe.
The actual inspiration for the design of the Dragoon in this picture>>698173406
is more of a combiantion of various elements from shit like the exosuits from Ghost in the Shell and other Shirow's works, Tau stealth suits from warhammer 40k, along with general evolution of the original concept I had for them way back when I first started working on this autistic worldbuilding project.
My first versions of the design were these things. Over time I decided to make them bulkier and more and more clearly being biotechnological exosuits rather than the more buglike things they started out as.

>>698176394
To a degree for me, yes. I found out that my years of trying to draw complex shapes from different perspectives gave me a decently intuitive understanding of modeling in 3d programs once I had learned how to use the tools themselves.
The original reason I started to learn 3d modelling tools was both curiosity as well as the notion that it would be easier to model complex shapes in a 3d modelling software than rake my brains over drawing those shapes over and over again in 2d.
The twist was that ultimately, at least for me, drawing was actually way more convinient and the only thing I really got out of learning to use 3d modelling softwares was the satisfaction of learning as well as the opportunity to see some of my designs as a 3d model.
For my actual drawing hobby, 3d modelling is not that useful.

Regardless if there is scientific proof or not, certain people are just born with natural artistic skills. Those who aren't are left to suffer for years for either minimal or decent outcome in artistic ability, or become so stunted in growth that they become delusional like the Fygoon nigger.
A man cannot become an artist by having Loomis thrown at him, and a man cannot become a 3d artist by having Udemy Blender courses thrown at him.
If you're drawings look like blocky MSPaint chicken scratch, and your 3D models look like incomprehensible blobs, just give up. It's over.

You can find most of the finished/half finished stuff I have drawn for this setting over the years on my barely maintained deviant art account.
https://www.deviantart.com/screeble/gallery/62271545/mundus-carnis
Though there is a lot of shit I never get around uploading out of various reasons, usually just me being unhappy with the drawing or it being unfinished and me losing interest in working on it further, like this one for example.

As for finding a team, my crippling social anxiety combined with my racial debuff of being an autistic Finn makes the prospect of that rather difficult. If I am lucky, I might be able to rope other people into making a demo project with the shit I draw as it's basis next spring, due to me attending a course about 3d modelling for vidya, but we'll see if that even happens.

Mental issues are what they are, and even if I can see that there is no real rationality for my anxiety etc, I can't rationalize away the feelings themselves.
My remarks about my ethnicity were more or less just a joke though.

When it comes to pushing this "project" forwards, I am trying to create a series of infographics that depicts the various factions of the setting and their weapon's technology like picture related, however the pace of it is glacial atm due to my tendency towards procrasitnation between my spouts of productivity. For anything more complex than just drawings or individual 3d models here and there, I'd actually need the help of other people though.

Worse yet, the Zmeian Compendium encompasses all of the diverse islands of the Zmeian Archipelago and not just Frydar Island, otherwise it would have simply been called The Frydarian Compendium.
You still got this, though. Believe in yourself as I believe in you, and on the off chance that you fail, always pick yourself back up and keep marching proud.

Pro tip. Low poly modeling is relatively easy to make passable. You can even use ai to make reference images to make it even simpler.

Thanks, I will, and same to you m8.

Atm I am sketching out a bunch of designs for a faction that is supposed to be aesthetically explicitly female, and running up to the issue of not being that good at drawing women.
Lack of practice on my part mostly, that's what one gets for not being motivated to draw by the desire to draw hot chicks, and instead being motivated by the desire to draw cool monsters and weird scifi shit lel.

Like I said, I haven't actually posted in the /agdg/ threads, I just know that they exist. On 4chan, the crab mindset seems to grow prelevalent whenever a creative subject matter becomes firmly enough established topic or is the the primary topic of the board at hand. /ic/ being a perfect example of the above.

Regarding the sketches, I'm still trying to find the overall aesthetic I want for the faction. Lore wise they are a fertility cult that is responsible for enabling majority of the denizen of the setting (who are borderline infertile mutants) to reproduce, and I want to somehow convey their worship of femininity and motherhood to come across in their designs.

>>698183416
Nope. Ive never drawn porn, I've always been too prudish for that (to my own detriment, at least with the designs I'm working on atm). Nor does learning ai prompting interest me as I find drawing more engaging and interesting than trying to get an "ai" to depict what I envision.

Currently making a game using AI assets.
I'm not shoving something out for a quick buck, I'm actually putting effort into everything else. I just have zero artistic talent despite close to a decade of practice and live paycheck to paycheck so I can't pay someone.
I'm worried people will call my game slop simply because it uses AI despite my hard work, but I genuinely don't know what alternative I have at this point.

It is me. The problem is while I know I could make a game if I wanted to, I don't want to make a game. I want to play games. I want to enjoy them. Making a hobby into a job is a surefire way to make yourself hate the hobby. And if I make my own dream game - that means I already know everyrhing that can happen in it, so there won't be any wonder of discovery because I'm the one who made everything and therefore I know exactly how everything can play out.

Not really, you have to take charge and direct something using examples from your own art or code even if it's subpar, or fall in line and be directed by someone else. You need a brainless code monkey to code for you and do little else, otherwise ideas will clash. There needs to be a very clear director/ideas guy who understands and makes clear exactly what artstyle/story/theme/gameplay they're shooting for. Although it is possible to have multiple directors such as an art director. The point is, you need the ideas guys leading the ones doing the actual brunt of the work otherwise it's just going to be a bunch of artists and coders swinging their dicks around making a mess with no identity.

Same. I was on a particularly good go of it earlier this month but now I've done basically nothing for like 3 weeks. It's really difficult to work on a schedule when it's all self-regulated, I'm really trying but every workplace and educational facility you ever go to training you to work under someone else who gives you tasks, deadlines, etc. that direct your actions make it really difficult to unlearn that mindset and do it all yourself. I feel like I'd get at least double the work done if someone else told me to do it, but the fact that nobody's making me do this but myself creates this mental block where I can't help but allow myself to put it off and that's hard to get over.

That is unfortunately how music production goes.
What I do is put my music down in finale and then export the midi into Reaper where I use my VSTs to make it sound right. As for samples, I only use Garritan's stuff and Roland's (discontinued) SoundCanvas, so good luck finding something!

The DAW doesn't matter for emulating a type of music, the synth does. You can often find what synths classic games used and then find vsts that emulate them, or get a good wavetable synth like serum, pigments or vital. Then learn synthesis, syntorial (costs money) or sound on sound's big red button series are good resources. But also if you find out what synths old games you're seeking to emulate used the vst copies of those synths might have patches of the instruments you're looking for.
>>
>>698192885
You can make a game with no writing or next to no writing though. Art is usually important, and gameplay is the most important unless the art and writing are really special.

Maybe try learning fine art. There's a ton of resources for it and the skills transfer over. If you have a community college nearby there's cheap classes available. >>
>>698193560
That's what I'm saying, gameplay will save you no matter what, and if you can't afford/make the greatest art in the world then having great writing will help players get immersed anyway. Writing isn't all about story, even a skeleton plot can be saved if players memorize all the enemy lines because they're fun.

Well, not today I suppose, since movies are all the rage and the writing/gameplay usually suck.
>>
>>698192153
>not fiddling with the controls to an airplane to warble some samples I have to pay for.
You can find good synths that are free or cheap these days, but a lot of good ones do cost money. And you're going to have to tweak things unless you like how a patch sounds and are fine with no variance. Writing music would be the same way, if you wanted a violin to use a tremolo technique or play staccato you would have to write that in the sheet music. The key is to write the music first and leave most of the tweaking for later parts of the production. You can find programs that will allow you to just score things but often they're going to sound very stiff
>>
Is it really wise to start in the deep end and making your assets from scratch? Wouldn't it be better to just make something with finished assets first?

It's a series of instructions that handle possibilities. Like imagine 10 people circling a memo amongst themselves, one of them keeps track of what the user is doing, writes it on the memo and the memo gets passed down to whoever's responsibility it isz who then goes and tells their sub-circle of subordinates to handle it before passing the memo on to the next guy
It's a web of memo circles

The only thing I can notice is maybe the digit lengths are slightly off or the end knuckles being too large. But if you're going for a stylized look it's fine. It's always worth improving, but unless you're trying to develop a high poly realism style I think what you've done looks good and you could use it for a game easily

it probably depends on what youre making. if youre just learning to make scenes/levels then sure you can probably use premade assets to block stuff out. if you want to make character models then you can also use premade models to sort of layer over as an outline.
>>

>>
>>698195667
Like I said, is it bad form for models to have internal clipping or should the surface be a completely smooth continuous thing?
>>
>>698195230
I think a lot of that is in the visual art. The lighting and color of the scene. The gesture and animation of the character. The voice actor's emotion if you have one. The room is dimly lit, the character hunched over illuminated by a beam of light, forlorn expression sadly lets out "Zanzibart... Mommas coming home"

No. I'm actually quite good at programming and while I'm not good at art or music, I am "good enough" at both of them. My game is about 4 years in, though, so it's certainly taking a long time and I don't know if it'll even be good when it's done. But I'm glad I'm at least doing it instead of just thinking about it.

Yeah. Grand strategy game.

I'm currently in the middle of working on the factory / pop generation process. Rather than fucking around with gigantic text files manually (as one might when modding a Paradox game) I'm setting it up so that there are parameters that can be set for cultures and world tiles that will then be used to automatically regenerate factories and pops, in order to make it more flexible as changes are introduced or settings are altered. I despise random worlds (mine is fictional, but hand-crafted) but I think strictly guided procedural generation is not a bad thing.
>>
I just wish I could make something that looked visually appealing and not garbage
>>
>>698195884
It depends entirely on you and what you are going for with the look of the game. It will work, weight painting each "piece" to the skeleton and having no fingers, but it is bad form depending on what kind of look you are going for.

You really have to just get into it and not think of what you made it. It is hard at first. I started drawing a year ago and I did feel embarassed at first. I took a drawing class and by the end of it felt very confident about my abilities and had several people in the class impressed by what I was making. You have to try to get into a flow state like when you're deep in a game. If you have to judge your work then also make sure you see what you did do well with if no matter how small

My dream game is an action JRPG based on Fire Emblem Three Houses/Hopes where I dreamed up a full three Act storyline involving a true final boss in the end.
I listen to some tracks and can choreograph certain boss fights, I thought of how certain supports and scenarios would happen, and new character interactions.
My expectations of it are so high, it’s like beyond the scale of a Xenoblade game.
Maybe I should do a fanfiction, and learn 3D modeling and make image stills of it like a visual/light novel.

Tough question, can't tell what I'm really feeling. I've been part of a game dev cycle before so having some familiarity with the weight of devving makes the idea of going "fuck that" feel kinda nice. On the other hand, I've brainstormed this idea for years, to the extent I don't even want to pillage its elements for a lesser project. Maybe part of me ultimately feels it's time I should ultimately spend somewhere else, even though the project has really become a reflection of my ideals and wants and letting that go feels like I'm just being lazy or choosing insignificance.

Maybe I'll refocus and see if there's another idea or even hobby that could fill that void, and if it can't, then I'll know for sure whether or not this game needs to happen.

I started with Unity for 12 months, use Unreal for a 3D game. It's just best practices. Not being a Unity hater for Unreal is just built for what you want to do. Unity is absolutely not and you will need 50 add ons to match Unreal's built in utility.

t. someone who worked on their dream game for a year in Unity before switching to Unreal. Low poly, not realistic, I've realized it's literally just built for devving in comparison. I wasted thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours on unity plugins before I realized Unreal has this all built in and there's no reason to waste anymore on Unity. Just do not bother, it's such a hunk of shit that you would need 12 months to even realize how much of a hunk of shit it is compared to UE5.

People will probably say otherwise/use godot but for what you're looking for you want UE5. Trust me, do NOT waste the time on this other shit. Plus if you want to do game dev as a living, everyone uses UE5 now, so the knowledge is a good skill to have.

I've been learning to draw on and off over the years but most days I feel too much trepidation to start something, much less finish it. Back in high school, one of my art teachers told me perfectionism s holding me back and lately a friend (himself an artist) told me that I shouldn't "grind" at art because that turns it into a chore.

If you are considering sliding into 3D, then you probably know enough to know the things I'm talking about here.

UMotionPro- built in to Unreal
Easy Save- built into Unreal
The entire concept of sockets- built into Unreal
Cloth/Hair/Fabric physics deformation- built into Unreal
Post-Processing that can natively understand and read Depth + Normal Maps- built into Unreal.

My dream project is a classic survival horror game. The entire process of making the game in Unity and then in Godot was a nightmare, porting to and integrating into UE5 was such a dream it's hard to even overstate. UE5 was built for 3D games and has the most money behind it for a reason. I really recommend not fucking around with other shit. I learned my lesson after a bit more than a year, I really recommend it. Not even to mention the more attractive revenue share package. Basically, it's better in all ways, business wise and technical.

Not a UE shill, just really burnt over my wasted months on other engines in comparison. It was like constantly cramming things in my ass sideways to make anything work on Unity or Godot, UE5 they work exactly as I would expect. This mostly only goes for 3D projects, but damn. It's been such a dream.

t. again drunk UE5 dev.

I've basically given up on 3D after trying it for 2 years. pic related is the majority of my work
it all goes back to being able to draw, no matter how hard you try to avoid it. low poly or even mid poly requires decent texture work, which means hand-painting textures, since you can only do so much with using photo sourced textures (try finding me textures for stuff that doesn't exist, and no AI is not a solution)
I really can't be bothered learning to draw just for some low poly shit, so it's over

Gradient textures can do a lot of heavy lifting.
>>
>>698216676
You can learn specifically the art skills you need just for your texturing. i.e. you won't need to learn perspective for example or proportions foreshortening when drawing textures compared to traditional artists, meaning you can get it done faster than it takes to learn drawing from scratch.

But I feel you, I too gave up 3D because I felt that my lack of drawing skills was holding my modeling back. Now I'm just doing pixel art.

I'm not a good artist at all, I've always focused on programming (not good at that either to be fair). But even I can do something like this.

Honestly, 3D art isn't that hard if you understand the software, use references and know a few basic techniques. If I can do it anyone can. (If you ask me, making textures is a lot harder)

Yes. Blender is probably the worst piece of software I've ever used. If you want to see something funny, take a look at it's list of shortcuts. That shit is so long they ran out of short combinations to use, and some of them you got to hold shit like alt+shift+control+tab+a+b+c+d+e+f+h, like who the fuck even has that many fingers?
>>
>>698217460

The game I'm working on is such a good idea I'll be open about it.
Imagine DotA but a singleplayer RPG designed to be beaten in an hour. If you've played Angel Arena or a lot of that cool singleplayer adventure map that shipped with War3 you probably have a good idea of what I'm going for. Closer to whatever that map was called fuck I loved that shit.
>>
>>698217841
probably referring to this. you just make the gradients in photoshop (would recommend taking a color palette from Lospec), use Project from View after pressing 1 or 3 on the numpad and then stretch it out to fit. requires zero knowledge of UV unwrapping or anything and looks a bit better than entirely flat colors
if you wanted a certain part of a mesh to look like it has a highlight, like a bevelled edge or a chip in some wood, then you'd move the UV of that face up to the highest part of the gradient
I think the application is limited though, since it limits you to sort of cartoony aesthetics. it's what I did in the top-right of >>698216038 with the tree

Yeah I know exactly what you're talking about, but I don't think you're going to finish it. It was possible in Warcraft 3 only because of the sheer amount of assets that game had that you could use. It would take you years to make something on a similar scope.

how hard would it be to make a generic room/arena based boomer shooter like ultrakill/serious sam that's really basic and with dynamic soundtrack handling like doom eternal

like just a basic prototype of a corridor leading to an arena, door closes and some waves spawn and then you fight a big guy and the music amps up, could you do that in less than a month from scratch if you had to learn everything like the custom script for a sound engine to alter what track it plays depending on the context if you've NEVER made anything resembling a game

If you've got a cracked copy of photoshop laying about I'd also advise looking into Blenders super duper secret technique; "Quick Edit" it basically takes a picture of the model and shunts it off to your image editor of choice. The problem is that assets and concepts are two different things. You can make cool concepts like your pic but it's not useful in a videogame unless it's somehow made into an asset.
I know these talented people that are really good at assets, so I gave them concepts for assets I would need along with the code overview and justification for their existence. Keep in mind I intentionally did my concepts with low details just so I could get a good example of their artistic impressions.
I would recommend collaborating with someone so you can get both conceptual and artistic work done as long as someone is also able to get a functional codebase working. Of course you need to figure out what kind of things you actually wanna make/conceptualize and what things the other person should do.

I'm gonna go ahead and slap a NDA on myself since I had sound designers and modelers working on this, but when I was working on this game revolving around minigames, I would daydream about it at my part time job, then come home to perfectly implement what I daydream in a minigame.
I'm not working on it anymore due to the team wanting me to pick it back up on another engine at a later date but now I daydream about the project I'm currently working on, but due to the nature of the game mechanics, it's a lot more technical than it is about being creative. I honestly love thinking about making stuff but I'm only ever happy about it if I'm actually working on it, as I am a big realist.

I tried making a simple Unity game over the last couple of years, but I have no background with 3d art - I’m a programmer.

Got bored a few weeks back and started making a game in Roblox studio and it’s nearly complete. I just used assets from the market place. Despite this, handling art takes by far the most time in game development for me.

Usually when I code, I can have something written and ready to test and debug in 10 minutes. You get a lot of progress going very quickly that you can actually interact with. It’s rewarding.

I can spend two days setting up art assets and have not done a single thing to actually progress my game. It’s annoying.

>take 32-64 size color palettes from Lospec
>work at low resolutions, 8x8 or 16x16
>replicate the style from games you like. retro consoles like NES, SNES etc are easiest
>use Spriters Resource to find sprites from the games you want to study
>consider getting Aseprite if you don't have it already, it's specifically designed for pixel art and used by most people that make it
also learn to draw
here are some good resources:

People who can't draw either go into 3D or just learn pixel art.
Pixelart is relatively easy, just overdone to death.

i guess trying to put the focus on something other than my game's art would be correct, but i always feel like i'm coping when i say "well if the gameplay is good enough these minimalist graphics are fine". an artist i've been following for a while has started making a game recently and it looks really good. graphically and gameplay-wise. can't help but feel a bit worthless in comparison still gonna try to practice sometimes

i think i know what artist your talking about but even he gets advice from others. its not a one man show
>>
>>698240062
well, that's probably true. i just hope i can get somewhat close to his level. maybe one day i'll post my game here and we can all playtest it or something. i can dream

Funnily enough, I had already come across all of those. But I guess starting over won't hurt. I'll go from the very beginning again.
