Why do shmups, the best genre, cause so much hatred?
Is it because of the sheer depth and density the genre offers, leading people who play non-games like JRPGs feeling inadequate?
Is it because of the immense difficulty and brutal decisions, making those who can't get good cry and call them bullshit quarter munchers?
Is it simply the purity of the genre, being all killer no filler gameplay?
It's hard to say, but no genre like shmups causes quite this anger
>>
Compare shooters to something like Minecraft, which never tells you that you have failed.

No pain, no gain. But most people think that having any kind of fail state makes something "unfun", so, here we are.
>>
>>719380008
i mean... they're games that demand intense concentration and don't offer clear rewards to lower skill players. shmups are designed to punish players in some sense, and make them fail, a lot. and unlike a souls game or whatever there truly is no option other than to practice and git gud, or say fuck this game and move on.
i say all this as somebody who enjoys shmups quite a bit btw. but you can't expect everybody to dig them, it takes a certain type of weirdo to find the motivation to really learn a game and play for score / 1cc or whatever

Because most people don't understand what makes them fun, and the won't even try to see things from another perspective.

OK and if I just put in more money I get infinite lives and zero fail state

Boring genre that failed to stay relevant and is only liked by obnoxious hyper fans ensuring that no one else ever makes anything interesting for it since they shit their pants when people try.

I am not the only one who thinks OP is spamming threads like these specifically because he's really butthurt about Mork and shmups, and wants to ruin discussion, right?
Either way, use the /vr/ general or non-bait OPs for genuine discussion, leave those threads be.

What's boring about them? They're more exciting than a snoozefest like dark souls where you spend half your time walking.

It's either you posting these threads, or you're unaware of the person that's obsessed with Mark and arcade like games.

What are your 5 favourite shmups?

For me it's Mushihimesama, Armed Police Batrider, Battle Bakraid, Rayforce and 19XX

There's nothing more infuriating than grinding your way to the last stage of a shmup and to lose your last life every single time. That means repeated 20-30 minute runs down the drain.
>>
The only shmups I could get into were Sin and Punishment, Dangun Feveron and Under Defeat
Where do I go from here?
>>
>>719388159
Which ones did you try but not get into?
Any reason why?
>>
>>719388338
I tried a lot of cave games, the strikers series, Darius Gaiden and G-Darius, Border Down (which I liked but way too annoying), Raiden 2, Garegga, 19XX, Terra Diver, Gunbird 2
The repetition really got to me, despite some initial excitement, it felt like the games never evolved or got dynamic. Now I know people say the games are dynamic and all games have reptition, I can't explain it exactly, it just feels different to when I keep replaying say Ketsui or Ninja Saviors over and over again, versus when I play Sin and Punishment 2 or Child of Eden, in the later games I have a wonderful fun time even though I've played the levels before, learning and improving, while in the former it feels like a tedious chore
>>
>>719388693
Damn. Maybe you need a "start with the Greeks" situation. Literally play space invaders, galaga, xevious and just keep going letting your taste evolve with the genre.
Which Cave games did you play? I assume Mushihimesama and one of the DoDonPachi series?
>>
>>719388693
Unironically play something like Twinkle Star Sprites. It's one of these games where no credit feels the same despite having an actual learning curve
>>
>>719387314
You could use save states to practice the last stage.
>>
>>719389856
I've played DDP, DOJ, ESPgaluda, Esprade, ESPgaluda 2, Deathsmiles, Mushi and Futari
>>
>>719391465
I do when I have that option, but in the shmups I liked the most I didn't have that option.
>>
>>719391579
Credit feed so you can always play the last stage then. Unless you are already at the point you get there all the time.

I just think bullet hell is lame, but that emerged for a reason. Need something that feels less like weaving through bullets while trying to keep a target on your firing line and more like dog-fighting.

>>719380008
They are the antithesis of the zoomer time waster, no winners or losers games that have become so popular with them. Shmups require a lot of skill to beat and there is a definite win/lose dynamic that you’re up against.
>>
>>719391549
All of the stages in mushihimesama are completely different, which is a big reason why that game is praised so maybe play past the first level probably, unless you mean futari, in which case if you're complaining about that you just don't like video games and never will like video games so may as well just move onto a different board
>>
>>719380008
its surely not due to elitist pricks like you that think they're hot shit because they dumped 5k hours into a toy made for 80's kids
