Did this guy ever actually define "art"?
>>
Art is in the eye of the beholder. every game is a form of art.

I have a better question:
Why do people want videogames to be art so much?

It's a spectrum of Artistic and product, Gacha, sports, cod and asset flip games are the furthest in the product end of the spectrum.

Pretty much everything else exists in the artistic end of the spectrum but its grown more complex over time, the spectrum still exists tho.

By that definition film could also be classified as a non interactive toy.
>>
Videogames are my only hobby and still I agree with the anons calling them interactive toys; that's what they are.

All games are art. Any disagreements are downstream from the misunderstanding that "art" is any kind of denotation of quality, merit, or even human expression vs corporate mass-consumption. Most great writers throughout history have hocked out some crap just to pay their debts. If you deeply search your own tastes, I'm sure we can find many elements that question any claims of artistic merit. Likewise, we can also wade through the most obvious sellout slop imaginable and will likely find at least one thing that only has value to the audience because it speaks to the authentic human soul, no matter how much it has been commodified.
As for Roger Ebert, this guy was one of many who shat on The Thing when it came out. I wouldn't wipe my ass with his opinions on any media.

Art is irreducible. Truth, Goodness and Beauty (or rather Aesthetics) are eternal mysteries, ones that art is inherently connected with. They can't be fully defined. Therefore, the question is - even though games contain other art within themselves, not unlike a well crafted sword, are games themselves art or objects made more beautiful with art? And from this question springs the ultimate question - can game mechanics, or rather the interaction between player and the rule set be considered to have a significant aesthetic and visionary quality? I don't believe this has so far been answered and the level of discourse among philosophers is still too rudimentary. But Ebert, yeah, he's a midwit hack.

I think Journey is a genuine work of art as it felt like an experience rather than your average game.

Furthermore, Ebert was a faggot who wore his jaw down from sucking blacks cocks like fish drink water and should have spent the rest of his life cosplaying as Trap-Jaw while I'm glad he and that other cunt Siskel are burning in Hell where they belong!!!FACT!!!
>>
you just know he loves the attention
>>
>Yet a banana taped to the wall is art worth millions.
>>
>>719644842
The mechanics and interaction between the player adds another dimension to the aesthetic elements of the game itself.

The feedback of a game and the feeling of its world is completely illusory, none of it is actually happening but the artistry is in blurring illusion and reality so the music and visuals should idealy be inseparable.
>>
>video games will never be art
>some black guy saying nigga 40 times for a rap song is
>>
>>719640018
It already is. The problem is the industry and gamers want “legitimacy” and respect from Hollywood. Hollywood will never respect gaming. It’s better to just continue making the best video games you can than being insecure and pandering to a crowd who will never respect you.
>>
>>719638503
video games has every other from of art it itself (music story drawings) so how cant it be art?

Video games are art and no amount of crying will not change that fact.
