If you set it to "Monochrome", it'll try to reduce everything to pure black or white with no gray tones through both alpha and color detection, which you can tweak through a couple of sliders. I was playing around with it to get rid of the blue sketch pencil marks like what you can see in picrel.

With quinacridone magenta, phtalo blue and cadmium yellow lemon you can mix a wide range of colors, add a titanium white, black (optional if you're willing to mix your primaries to get a black), add an oxide red both for underpainting and to desaturate your blue and you have a very versatile palette.As for what you're painting on, you don't need to paint on canvas exclusively, people often do studies on hardboard, bristol boards and high density Kraft paper which are fairly cheap.
