Just get some cash and buy a decent weapon off the board. Even 100-200k should be enough to get you something much stronger than whatever you're worried about farming. Eventually you'll want to refine your gear and you will want a luck character for that, but I'd say it's easier to go through main quest for a while and then do an alt that just pumps luck.
