here's the guide I used to level a synthetizer to be able to dye my own armor without paying 1m spina for each. Keep in mind that once you get synthesis proficency to level 200 you unlock the 5th lock, but the fifth one will never be guaranteed (caps at 80% success chance I think) so if you have armor that you really don't want to lose then just settle for the 4th lock at level 150 which does have 100% chance to succeed.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SnRvdoHoI4Y

All of the problems I had in the volcano are worse now. I just beat Mauez, and it took almost half an hour. I already struggle to do damage when I can hit things, but he seemingly buffed his agility around half health, and I started missing 3/4 of my attacks, meaning no mana gain, meaning no real damage.

Are there certain points during the story where I'm supposed to stop and grind for levels/equipment? The dragon felt like the first difficulty spike and took so long to kill that the AI companions both died and I had to kite until they revived. The next dragon didn't take as long but I "stood in the bad" just to see how much damage it would do and I got one-shot even with the extra 1100 HP from the event helm and a potion.

You can retreat and restart the fight on easy if it gets too time consuming. Remember that you get fixed xp gains just by progressing through the MQ and these get more substantial further into it
