A license to make games for any console is ludicrously expensive, like tens to hundreds of thousands. If you mean homebrew, console manufacturers are getting increasingly more secure about that making it harder and harder, at best, you'd need to get a wii dev kit. Good luck with that.

I like those three ideas a lot, but I believe "Ghost ship" and "circus" are Mario staples, are they not? Especially in Mario 3D World. A giant kitchen would be neat, and a lot to work with.

Because I like challenging myself, I wonder if there is a way I could organically combine the Circus and Ghost Ship ideas into one stage. Maybe instead do a haunted circus? Hmm. You have really given me some food for thought.

I am trying to refine my Godot UI skills by trying to make a mockup combat UI for a UT/Deltarune inspired horror bullethell RPG.
I'd like to figure out how to implement a way to tween the Panel at the bottom containing interactive UI elements into the bullet hell minigame box, because I think it would look neat, but instead I think I'll just cheat a lil' and create a blank copy and use that to create the bullet hell minigame "zone"
Biggest issue I have currently is being unable to shrink the Texture buttons in the bottom UI container, I'd like to shrink AND move them off screen before I disable the container and spawn the "fake" one in.

I have some complaints with the artstyle. Listen or not idc.

First the vfx stuff. That smooth overlay lighting mixed with pixels. I would turn it off or replace it with sprites. Or see if you can "pixelize" it somehow. Get rid of the red flashing when you are hurt. Tone down the camera shake and remove the dynamic zooming.

Second, the webm's size makes it worse. Personally I like sprites at original size (1x zoom). I'd like to see this game at non-scaled resolution, and I would also increase the field of view.

Third, the color palette seems very flat and boring. Idk, try playing around with the hues in a filter or something. Consider adding shadows to the characters that cast against the wall if you can maybe.

I'm not a pixel purist.

There isn't a healthbar. Red flashing is the only way to show how damaged you are.

Camera shake is less pronounced in the actual game, recording makes it show more for some reason. Zooming I kinda like to make stuff more dynamic.

>Second, the webm's size makes it worse. Personally I like sprites at original size (1x zoom). I'd like to see this game at non-scaled resolution, and I would also increase the field of view.
Don't know how to get other sized webms but I'll try to mess around with export settings

>Third, the color palette seems very flat and boring. Idk, try playing around with the hues in a filter or something. Consider adding shadows to the characters that cast against the wall if you can maybe.
it's the homebase, brown is the main color. Other stages have more color. Shadows I'll try to add later.

Thanks for the feedback

That pic looks waaaay better without the gay lighting and no zoom. And yeah I can see other stages have better coloring. But still, that lighting made it worse.

>There isn't a healthbar. Red flashing is the only way to show how damaged you are.
Still dislike it. Idk what the alternative would be (I guess a healthbar would throw off the vibes) but I'd rather guess my health or keep mental track of how many hits I took than have the screen keep pulsing red. That shit is garbage.

Yesterday I finished very flexible cutscene manager. Now I can make cutscenes active/disabled based on pretty much anything. Having/not having some items in the inventory, quest status (not started, active, finished, failed), state of other cutscenes. And it's all pretty easy to use.
For example, in this webm the last cutscene only triggers when the second one is finished. It tried to activate it earlier, but it's disabled.
Feels so good when you do something cool.

if you're starting from absolutely nothing, I think this is based on what program/application you choose to use. These are usually called DAWs (Digital Audio Workstation), they are the Photoshop for sounds.

if you are actually going into recording/producing and you already have a DAW you can use, honestly I've not a lot to give you except look them up on youtube.

Writing music for me largely means being able to describe what you feel when you hear it, and why. Youtube, probably videos dissecting popular musical or video game pieces.

I never went to school for this, and just mostly listened to a lot of (vidya) music that I happened to like. Youtube was for looking up tutorials on how to use a piece of software to do what I want, and maybe how some other composers did their stuff.

If you guys want to make money then you need to make porn. Either in high quantity or very high quality.

You simply put somebody you trust to get the money for you.

Those are all things that are clear that should be done, but there's nobody who wants to point directly at the resources or the steps towards them, that's why NSFW isn't viable unless you're already established

math is absolute bullshit. "i can calculate the circumference of this circle using an infinitely long decimal number" bro the fuck you smoking? "yes hello i'd like a square root of -1, here you go one 'i'" that's some fucking nonsense.
i got problems with my fucking 3d rotation oh well you need a four dimensional vector it includes the square root of -1, and then the square root of the square root of -1, and then THE SQUARE ROOT OF THAT. they're just fucking trolling me at this point right?
>>
>>722901978
Quaternions in gamedev are just convenient for calculation due to the matrix math with rotations.
>>
>>722902350
Some might find it strange to add a number to a vector, as they are objects of very different natures, or to multiply two vectors together, as this operation is usually undefined. However, if one remembers that it is a mere notation for the real and imaginary parts of a quaternion, it becomes more legitimate. In other words, the correct reasoning is the addition of two quaternions, one with zero vector/imaginary part, and another one with zero scalar/real part:

I've been mulling it over since last night, and I really do like the Haunted Carnival idea. I can do skeleton clowns that throw bombs, monkeys that swing around chainsaws for a really large hit radius. Is it possible to purposely make an "autism magnet game" like Touhou or Sonic? I'm talking something where people get very attached to the characters and make their own fanon and shit

>>
>>722914356
>undertale feels like it came kinda close but not quite and i wonder why
"But not quite"? Their audience is ridiculously autistic and autists gravitate to the series like moth to a flame.
What you're think of is age of the series themselves. Sonic autism has been going since the 1990s, Touhou since the 2000s, so it's easy for Undertale to look smaller in comparison having started in the 2010s. That doesn't mean their fanbase is less rabid than the two mentioned, no way.

"Give up on gaming, it's the key to being a great game creator"

>>
>>722916674
It wasn't always. The problem is these threads became daily. Back in the day when they were once or twice a week, people had time to build up progress and you had multiple game devs posting all at once, which made new devs want to join the fun. When it's every day, you end up getting more schizos and crabs than progress posters, and then those types feel welcome. Schizos and Crabs scare away new, active developers, until you're left with nothing but no-devs, posting bullshit about game theory when they've never developed a game.

This is exactly what happened to /agdg/ and now you're seeing it happen in real time to this thread.

>>
>>722916674
agdg doesn't make games though. They fellate each other over the idea of making games while maybe posting game progress every 8-9 months.
>>
>>722915559
It's not really about believing in yourself, its about making something people would give money for.
There's overlap between 'game i want to make', 'game i can make in a reasonable time' and 'game that could make money'. If you make the right thing, you're likely to see some money.
If you make $5k, its much better if that game took you 5 months, than 5 years.

because that's what fagoon is. I dont think about him, and I rarely make posts about him. However, it's impossible to fully ignore him because the dude is like a bull in a china shop. no matter what you do, he will try and make himself known.

ignore him? he ramps up the shit posts. reply to him? he ramps up the shit posts and accuses you of being whoever his flavor of the month hateboner is.

in a non-gamedev thread? he's likely gonna ramp up the shitposts and try to make everything about him. because that's what he does, he's a narcissist who thinks shitposting is part of the culture, so he has to bring it with him everywhere he goes.

Game engines can hold peoples hands a great deal, and not having any of that means you need to know how to program. I think that pretty much encapsulates it. If you want freedom but do not care about some aspects then use an existing framework.

That really depends on what you mean by engine. You can cobble together some libraries for 3D, data management and UI in weekend and run it in your browser.
But most gamers seem to understand "game engine" as an all-in-one UI tool for making games, including a plugin ecosystem and giant asset libraries. Those are a massive projects if you want to be even remotely competitive with the existing players.

Let's say I have a bunch of Godot nodes in a scene. Maybe a character made up of different Sprite nodes, or a bunch of Controls making up a menu. What's my best option for applying a shader to all of them as if they were the same texture? Are you really expected to put then all into a viewport to get them as a single texture for that? You can't even put shaders on Controls at all without converting to a texture.

>>
>>722932846
I think what you are talking about is a "full screen shader"

What you do is add a square that covers the entire view of your screen. If it's 2D, I recommend a ColorRect. If it's 3D, then put a quad mesh in front of the camera. Then attach a shader to it and you can write any fragment effect you want, like greyscale or dithering or whatever.

I do all of the work with the sprite outside of the viewport because it's so annoying, but I'm just making a cli tool so it might not work for you.

I need opinions from anons on a fundamental game design choice.

The basic idea with the game is you get money for beating levels and the objectives in levels, and you use that money to buy upgrades and moves. Very genre-standard stuff. I also wanted to reward the player for playing well by giving them money at the end of each run-through of a level based on their final score; higher scores get more money.

But I realized there's a problem. Most games in the genre only put SOME upgrades behind the shop. Other upgrades are found out in levels (new weapons, extended health bars, etc). Which is relevant, not only because it incentivizes exploration, but because it allows the player character's total strength to be story-locked. There's only so strong you CAN conceivably be at the first boss, or at the fourth boss, etc., no matter how much grinding you care to do.

As my game stands, there isn't anything actually stopping you from just going back and grinding the first mission, over and over, tediously and uninterestingly, until you can buy max upgrades and steamroll everything. So I am faced with a choice

1) ignore it. Let the balance be broken in this way. It's a way to "buy easy mode" for struggling players. The problem with this is it rewards the player for playing in an un-fun way, choosing a low-risk strategy with guaranteed payouts even though it doesn't help them engage with the game more or actually get better

2) lock shop items behind level completions. This is the most "obvious" solution but I think it feels the lamest, it's arbitrary and it doesn't really let me dangle cool shop items in front of you at level 1 with exorbitant costs

3) instead of paying you for your score at the end of each run, you get paid for your HIGHEST score. If you beat your old high score, you get paid the monetary difference between what you've already earned and you WOULD have earned.

Which do you think is best?
>>
>>722937883

>2) lock shop items behind level completions. This is the most "obvious" solution but I think it feels the lamest, it's arbitrary and it doesn't really let me dangle cool shop items in front of you at level 1 with exorbitant costs
I think this is fine. It makes you interested in other levels to see what rewards you can get in them.
>>
>>722937883
we are designing something similar with our game, but we have other things to offset buying things with different resources, such as buying cosmetic stuff like different outfits, things to decorate your hub world, buying sounds to play in a soundtrack, etc
regarding gaining the resources, one of the things we are doing is giving resources/awards based on the score you get when completing the level.
so for example there would be a score C through S, and at each rank, you get some sort of prize. if you get the same score or lower on a second playthrough, you earn nothing.
this gives an extra incentive for the player to try out getting the highest score rank.
there are also treasures/resources in the level that you only collect once, so it incentivizes an extra bit of exploration that you only collect once
>>
>>722937016
>mostly positive
as in Mostly Positive TM, the rating on Steam? that's a red flag.
>>
>>722938665
yeah, option 3 was inspired by that sort of idea, where you get rewards for "S rank", though the game doesn't really use a tiered ranking system (you could always, theoretically, beat your old score, the scoring system is unbounded, or at the very least the theoretical upper bound is exponentially higher than I would reasonably expect anyone actually playing the game to achieve).

I was initially really excited about the idea but I'm worried that it can lead to personal grinding (not resource grinding, but drilling the same missions over and over to practice and improve) being less rewarding, since once you get a very high score, even if you COULD beat it, the payout would be a pittance since you'd only likely beat it by a few points anyway and get paid a tiny fraction. It's a low-hanging fruit problem. If I reward you for your total per-run score, 5 really good runs pays a lot of money; if I reward you for your best score, 5 really good runs earns you the money of one really good run. So once you have a really good run under your belt, why waste the time and effort of doing 4 more? I guess "personal betterment" but the whole point of score payouts was to incentivize the player trying to improve in repeat run-throughs.

That's what I was afraid would be the only option. I'm most used to working in v3 and haven't moved to v4 yet, so it could be version specific, but that specifically isn't great because having too many viewports active has shown to create minor frame delays. My reflection method (for mirrors, glass, etc.) uses one viewport per reflection, and when there were more than around eight or so active viewports in the tree, some of them would render one frame later, so I had to inject a deferred call in _process to a function that:
-Disables my main viewports' update modes
-Set every reflection viewport's update mode to UPDATE_ONCE
-Calls VisualServer.force_draw
-Re-enables my main viewports' update modes
The one frame delay might be acceptable in some contexts, but for certain things like reflections of your movement, it's very obvious and very jarring.
I ended up combining all of my individual animated sprite pieces into one giant disgusting spritesheet in my sprite editor. That didn't work very well and turned really messy when different parts of the animation had different periodicity, but it got the job done. Mostly was wondering for future projects, since it's something I worked around a lot on my last one for any sprites using more complex animations.
>>722933435
That might work in some cases, but not for something where you only want to apply the shader to a subset of your nodes, i.e. wobbly text in a Label.
>>722937883
3 is a fun way to encourage players to actually engage with the systems, but you'd need to make sure you have some money overage to realistically reach the end, because playing for pure perfection gets frustrating and you'd end up doing the thing over and over again. That gets into the territory of speedrun autism. Nothing is wrong with 2 either, and helps you balance around player progression. You could even combine them, like doing something specific in a level to unlock a possible upgrade (see Gravity Circuit).
>>
>>722937883
Have you tried soft-locking progress instead of hard-locking it? So players can grind level 1 if they want, but they get way more resources in level 3, 4, etc. so the most time efficient method is pushing forward and challenging yourself. Then you could add money sinks to even the playing field between good and bad players. Like cosmetics or horizontal progression on different weapons.
>>
>>722939125
>If I reward you for your total per-run score, 5 really good runs pays a lot of money; if I reward you for your best score, 5 really good runs earns you the money of one really good run.
i think this would be a fault of the games reward system, or the game itself being too easy. almost every player will play a level a few times before getting the highest rank, and the difficulty curve should be rising as the game progresses.
though you may be over thinking this. plenty of combo-based games give no incentive past a higher score and players who like these type of games will play just for the high score alone.
but as i mentioned, we have different resources for different things, and giving a resource for something simple or arbitrary like cosmetic changes is a good side reward that the player can farm almost ad infinitum that does not affect gameplay

>That might work in some cases, but not for something where you only want to apply the shader to a subset of your nodes, i.e. wobbly text in a Label.
You can adjust the size of the ColorRect so it only covers the part you want affected. Also try playing around with layers or the node order.

You can also add a shader directly to a label for wobbly text btw, but that was probably just an example.
>>
>>722937883
oh cool you and your game are still alive. my gut feeling says 2. you can even have it that you find blueprints hidden in levels for stuff in shop or the delivery-robot or some shit being stuck somewhere in a level. i think dangling expensive items early on is fun once at the beginning, but annoying if that's the norm. 3 makes your money not money anymore, but is also a fine decission. 1 is a no from me though; people will optimize fun out of games if you let them
>>
>>722940053
>i think this would be a fault of the games reward system, or the game itself being too easy. almost every player will play a level a few times before getting the highest rank
Yeah but again, there's no "highest rank". You can ALWAYS score higher. That's very much by design.

Obviously the idea here is each mission scales up the payouts for clearing objectives, so the optimal (from a time-use perspective) is to advance through the game. Grinding the first few levels over and over for repeated high scores would be a bit like staying in the starting area of the game killing the same trash mobs until you're level 99. It seems asinine and ridiculous. But I know people who do it. Granted RPG players are a different breed than action game players, but do I really want to enable that kind of degenerate playstyle? Or do I want to send a clear message "you are wasting time doing this"?

It's tricky, because I don't want you to NEVER go back to the starting circuit to stomp it when you're more capable of scoring millions of points than you were at the start of the game. I just also don't want you to live there until you can buy everything and then steamroll the stuff that's meant to be ramping up the challenge.

it depends on your engine and if you're working with 2D or 3D
assuming your engine doesn't have built-in camera bound properties, for 2D, every frame, just grab the bounds of the room, and when the camera moves, check its corners to see if it's outside those bounds and by how much, then move the camera position by the opposite of how far past the bounds it is
>>
>>722939935
What I can tell you is that there are some syntax differences between v3 and v4, as AI search was consistently producing garbage answers to my queries.

My game is not in godot, I just use it to produce the big sprite sheets because my engine can't do 2d bone animation. So I can make the parts for character A, B, and C, run a godot script that spits out traditional sprite sheets. Each character also has a json file that defines which frames are the animation for walking, jumping, etc.

This approach made sense for me because I'm making a monster collector and need a ton of characters that can share animations. Your next project might have different constraints.
>>
>>722940464
I think I can do a diegetic shop thing where you can't buy certain upgrades without sponsorships/licenses, I had an idea where doing the "extra objectives" in a map was a way of getting sponsors. The idea was you'd need to get a certain amount of sponsorships to leave a set of levels (think of it like getting a certain number of power stars to open a door in SM64, it doesn't matter which ones you get) and access the boss of that set. So you could reasonably show the player these shop items and have their cost be "$XYZ, only available with 6 sponsors" or something.

>3 makes your money not money anymore
I guess it sort of depends on how you view "re-running". If you view it as a retcon of player actions, it makes more sense (i.e. in re-running the map, you aren't doing it a second time, you're doing it for the first time AGAIN, and performing better). But yeah, I do worry about the legibility on it, does it really make sense?

I also thought that if you're paying by the high score, you could extend the idea to multiple high scores. So your total level score, your best single combo, your fastest clear time, all of those could have payouts. That gets pretty generous if you do full financial rewards for each one but when you only get paid out for your best performance to date it stays reasonably balanced I'd think.

I didn't mention it but another thing I wanted to do, which would be fundamentally at odds with hard-gating what's available in the shop by progress, was to add hidden functionality where you can refund your starting HP upgrades, the way you can refund purchased moves, for progressively increasing sums of money. The idea being that in principle, you could refund all your HP and get paid so much money for it that you could unlock all of the other upgrades, and get to start the game with your full offensive and mobility kit, but only if you play the game in permanent OHKO mode. For the people who bitch about having to do the "tutorial before the real game" because they're action game veterans

Attack And Defend are just the main ones really. Focus attacks are pretty much heavy attacks. Do more damage and can break defend. Dodge is useless at the moment, will need to fix that later.
