What engine should I use if I want to make a massive world that takes the player literally 24 hours to walk across?
>>542012689UE5
AI voice acting is literally the most ethical use of generative AI.The voice actors on sites like ElevenLabs both consented and are being paid when you use their voice. Both AI code and AI art models are trained on the stolen works of creators who will never see a dime for what the AI produces.Guess what /agdg/ is okay with though? Hint: Its not AI voice acting.
>>542012689>make a massive world that takes the player literally 24 hours to walk across?Still can't beat Java where it can take you 14 years to go in just one direction.
How do you contact and pay streamers and video makers to do officially advertised content, like with an #ad tag during the stream?Do you contact them per email or per Discord messages, or otherwise? How do you pay them and make agreements? Set up a broker on a broker site? Sign a contract? What terms are common? Like, $XXX for a 2 hour stream for a streamer?Do you need to have established relationships and know people, like publishers often do?
>>542013360I imagine they list a contact email for business inquiries in their info page, so you can ask them these questions.
>>542013484>>542013539Fygoon please don't spam
>>542013360Most streamers/youtubers have a business email you can find on their youtube page. They get hundreds of emails per day so it might take a while to hear back but they do read them. Most of them aren't professional enough to bother with shit like that and they'll probably see it as a waste of their time if you try. You'll probably end up sending money to their paypall without an actual contract signed. It's pretty likely they won't even agree to an actual timeframe. It'll be something like, "Ill play your game once and post a video about it."
Even NASA is using Unreal Engine, fuuuuug

>>542013714It's unironically a better engine for virtual production and archvis than it is for gaming.I dunno what the fuck they're thinking with this shit.
>>542013514True, I have seen some of those email addresses for business inquiries on "about" pages, but I would like to try to be as prepared as I can be.There is also the issue that a publisher doing this kind of thing can afford to take risks, both because of experience making it easier for them to avoid pitfalls, also because they plan to do it a lot so a failure is something they can learn from and amortize over time, and they also learn more about which streamers and content creators, and the companies that often manage them, are trustworthy. If I fail, I probably just lose the money and time with little recourse, and if I am not going to be paying for a lot of advertisements, the experience will probably not be worth a lot.Would it be easier to contact a publisher or advertising agency?Sorry for all the questions.
>>542013975Pretty much. Tencent bought out Unreal to make anime with it, not video games.

>>542013649Thank you for the answer.>You'll probably end up sending money to their paypall without an actual contract signed.I had fears that it might be like that. I'm stubborn, so I think I'll try to find a way without sending money into the ether and hoping for the best.
>>542013360I believe it's why publishers are needed. Streamers don't give a shit about mail and sometimes they even have a person on a payroll to check and filter emails for them, they're that entitled. They get hundreds if not thousands of emails every day, hate mail, love mail, spam. If you're nobody your chances to get streamer to play your game is about zero. Now, publishers is a different thing, sometimes publishers actually have already established connections with streamers and they're more agreeable to play indie games if the publisher's name attached to them.
>>542015583>they're that entitled.I wouldn't call it entitled.I guess it makes a lot of sense overall to establish both advertising expertise and establish relations, and make that part of the value offering of a company, like a publisher or advertising agency.

I think I like the *idea* of game dev more than I like game dev. That, or my executive function is just shot completely. Dicking around with various engines and libraries is fun (and I've been doing it for a while now as a software dev anyway) but actually sitting down and working on a large project fro a prolonged period of time sounds like a nightmare.
>>542020891reminder that picrel was a main project
>>542021125>$2.2mwho cares if no one talks about the game when the guy is free from wageslaving forever.
>>542021792You have to treat it like a job. Not an anime you comfortably watch unfold. If you want to be a prof musician you need to spend 10,000 hours just playing shit again and again, learning subtle improvements over time. Game dev is the same thing. It's not the final product. It's 10,000 hours (more really), of sitting there debugging shit. Or building boring features. Doing boring polishing. I do it because I need to create something. And I want wealth and freedom. That's what motivates me. Not some immediate need for pay off. Shit I've been working for like 3 years and I don't have much at all to show for it. But Know I'm getting closer every day. So I keep pushing.
>>542021792Production sucks and basically everyone agrees on that. The fun part of game development is early on when you're experimenting.
>>542021792>working on a large project fro a prolonged period of time sounds like a nightmareIt's the opposite. It becomes cozy and familiar like a second home. It's good to take breaks sometimes though. People who grow to hate their own game become crazy. And sometimes that's because they know they are making something nobody actually wants to play so you have to know whether you're just burned out or you're actually just digging a hole.
>>542022665The fun part for me is just thinking of features. Building a game in my head. Giving it a setting. Figuring out marketing or what edge it has over competitors. Really I have no real interest in programming and wish I could just idea guy all day. Although I am intimidated at the idea of honing down my ideas into a comprehensible game world. I can think of 100 features really quick, but then having to make 10 of them work together is harder. If I had to think through every mechanic before I began programming I'd be terrified. Similar to Matt Stone and Trey Parker freaking out when they realized they had to prepare every shot ahead of time with Team America because it's hard to actually move the puppets. It takes planning. They were so used to being able to quickly redraw South Park scenes that their whole workflow depended on quick movement.

>>542023074>>542023269I could see something like an open world RPG being fun to work on for a long period of time.Like you get sick of working on the main quest so you decide to build a small village on the coast where there are deepones living there or something.Kind of like what GRRM does with the spinoff books for Game of Thrones. But a lot of games kind of build on elements from previous parts of the game so it becomes a house of cards that you're constantly stacking shit ontop of.

>>542024173>all the goycattle from your first game will come to buy your next one due to your prior successThis has been proven time and time again that this doesn't work unless you make the same game over and over. It won't work for Waddaboy because his main project is an RPG or something, a genre too cerebral for the subhuman masses that enjoyed flyknight. It only worked for Toby Fox and Scott Cawthon cause they essentially kept releasing the same game over and over but even that is not a guarantee anymore.

Linear horror experiences just won't do. Iron Lung gives you control of a camera that only takes one picture at a time which invites viewers to see for themself, because the streamer won't photograph absolutely everything.Your goal is to get the streamer to show all the subtle implications that if you buy the game you can do something different, without actually doing all the different options.

>>542031591If you need to have fun while making your game then that's already a ngmi attitude. The "fun while deving" is a very small part of game dev. Even if you try to make your dream game you will get bored or stumble upon things you don't want to do or don't enjoy doing. If you can't power through those things with discipline then you will never finish a game no matter what the scope of it is.
>>542032010it needs to be immediately fun bc that's what the market is these days
>>542032010I agree.I didn't watch the video, but as someone who used to be pro build your dream game right away, I will say building even 1 small game might be worthwhile for people. Just to go through the whole process. Menus, saving, controller, translations, option menus, marketing, steam page, steam achievements, just all that extra shit that is tacked onto the game making process. Once you do that once you can scope your dream game better. You also learn little tips and tricks that can help scale the dream game better.

Also valid that you can try to make a small game that gives you skills that go towards making the larger game you want to make.Indeed making one full game from start to full release is an experience that you can't discount. Why doesn't fatfuck gabencunt just open-source GoldSource for commercial use by indie devs? It could significantly lower the workload required for a 3D game and even some of it's design, like movement or save systems.I don't think there's any middleware like Havok preventing this from happening and he could just make it so you have to sell it on the Steme store if they're afraid about rights or whatever.
>>542029864Way ahead of you here. Anything that makes you independent of the system is too risky and unsustainable. This is not the reality, but social programming. The only thing stable is you selling your own time to a wageslave job.
>>542033249just wait for S&Box's full release and make games with that since it's probably going to be the source 2 "sdk"
>>542033249Same question, but for Unreal 1998 engine. Tim fuck publically said, that it was going to be released to the public but he never did that even though epic is now a billion dollar company.
>>542033249Hopefully because he's going to release Source 2 for indie devs for commercial use and doesn't want internal competition.
>>542033582Probably because he released Unreal Engine 4 for indie devs for commercial use and doesn't want internal competition.
>>542033582To be fair though Unreal Engine 1 barely works on modern systems. Deus Ex can start up but a fan launcher is required for the game to be at least somewhat playable. It's also way less understood and has more outdated tooling.Compare that to GoldSource where fans have made modern map editors & compilers and model compilers with increased limits and less jank and the engine itself Just Werks™ for the end user.
>>542033249It exposes Valve to legal liability for no commercial benefit

>>542033582I don't know the full situation with Unreal but I personally know devs who wanted to release the source for their older games but basically couldn't because their engines or art contained material they didn't actually own the rights to.This is why id stopped releasing their sources too. id tech 5 has a bunch of proprietary bullshit that they licensed that make it a headache to release now.So did id tech 4 but I guess they stripped it out before releasing it.
>>542034804>I don't know the full situation with Unreal but I personally know devs who wanted to release the source for their older games but basically couldn't because their engines or art contained material they didn't actually own the rights to.John Carmack and Ken Silverman were able to open-source their engines whilst stripping the released code of assets and code that was under copyright protection. Literally a skill issue.
>>542034804Nobody is forcing them to rewrite the proprietary stuff. Just remove the proprietary stuff and release the uncompilable build. Unreal 1998 was important because the amount of stuff it did using software rendering, and yet it turned out Tim didn't own the write to the software renderer, he never wrote it in the first place. Anyone not using their own custom engine compiled with only three assembly instructions is clearly going to fail. You brainlets are stuck in tutorial hell using garbage like Unreal or that cutesy Go-dot toy. My game uses true voxel technology I invented, and the texture memory is encoded in quantum fluctuations. You probably think Blender is complicated. Just spend more time working, less time failing. I haven't released anything because it's too good for the current market. I am a visionary and you are all wasting time.
Why are you even still talking about making 'games'? We should only be discussing experiences that transcend media. Anyone here coding in C++ is a joke. Real devs use brain-compiled Lua directly into the GPU shader cores. Your lack of ambition is why you're a permalooker on this thread instead of a million-dollar dev like I'll be next week. Stop making your retro garbage. My "game" is going to have real-time fluid dynamics calculated on a blockchain for added performance integrity. You wouldn't get it.
You morons still think an actual 3D modeler is needed? I build my 'high-fidelity' assets using Windows Paint and exporting as a .txt file. It's the only way to achieve true indie aesthetic. If your dev machine isn't perpetually overheating, you aren't trying hard enough. Post your failures, I want a good laugh before I implement procedural space travel tomorrow.

The 'best' approach to animation isn't bone weights, it’s purely using a matrix decomposition of terrible coordinates passed directly to the vertex array. I cannot even contemplate the failure spectrum radiating from all you Unity and Unreal plebeians who think they know optimization. True AAA Dev Power (TM) comes from recompiling GCC itself with custom non-Euclidean turing optimizations enabled via the --disable-pthreads-except-on-tuesday-flag. My entire game codebase, which is a massive 4D chess souls-like VR survival crafting open-world MMORPG (WIP title: "Eternal Recurves of the Quantized Void"), only runs because I hand-minified the kernel driver for my toaster's LCD display and use the refresh cycle as my frame clock governor. Anyone NOT using raw CUDA compute streams to handle menu traversal is structurally flawed. You're telling me you let the garbage collector run? Disgraceful. My custom memory manager (internally nicknamed 'The Cleanser') only allocates space when the system uptime modulo a prime number of my choosing is equal to zero. This makes the game incredibly stable and forces optimal development habits. You n00bs just slap prefabs together while I’m mapping GPU temperature fluctuations directly to player velocity to eliminate input lag. THIS IS NOT OPTIONAL. It is required for the integrity of the artform. Your project is a meme, mine is a patent pending computational paradox sneed.
>>542040035What is this pathetic output I am seeing from your screenshots? Low-res textures and boring baked lighting is for oldschool boomers. My lighting system is built on an Inverted Light Matrix Tiling Protocol (ILM-TP) that calculates global illumination from the darkest point in the scene. It's mathematically sound because light is just the absence of real illumination! It uses only 1-bit textures because the data is in the negative color space, allowing my draw calls to return a negative index buffer to the tessellator. You’ll never achieve that kind of photoblocking detail with your deferred shading crap, which everyone knows is an unstable mathematical delusion. If your shadows don't require the GPU to perform a 40-digit floating point prime factorization for a single screen pixel, your code is too simple to sell. Why even bother with PBR? I use CGR: Catastrophe Group Rendering, where I render all surfaces at hyper-4K (4000x4000) and then use a stochastic downsampler filter that randomly eliminates 99% of the pixel data, ensuring a truly organic and artifact-rich final look that perfectly simulates film grain that no post-processing fool could ever duplicate. Stay trash, I'll be the visual visionary, faggot.
>>542046831It isn't a lot. It's not nothing either, though. They are two developers IIRC. The game is still in Early Access. There are still a good chunk of people playing it, but it is decreasing. Probably not as good at making people play it for longer than the main content, than some other games, whether that is good or bad.
Surprisingly low crab count.
>>542049605The utter lack of scope in this thread is nauseating. You are all aiming too low. Why stop at one single genre? My new game, 'CRYPTOMIMIC VORTEX PROTOCOL', is simultaneously a Turn-Based Strategy, a Real-Time Shooter, an Endless Runner, a Match-3 Puzzler, a Farming Sim, and a Hyper-Loot Action-Adventure, all rendered on the Immutable Blockchain Asset Stream for maximum user FOMO and hyper-retention. Every single object, from the dust particles to the game logo, is a non-fungible receipt-backed perpetual crypto-token. You buy the game, you buy a temporary title on the air you breathe in the menu. This ensures true scarcity and unlimited potential for secondary income streams that you, the typical devlet, are too scared to embrace. Your sales pitch shouldn't be about the gameplay, it should be about the ROI for the alpha-whales who will immediately dump their $5,000 NFT Starter Box after playing for thirty minutes. Don't be an artist, be a monetization genius and go sneed some oil. Where is your mandatory $500 day-one DLC?

My networked server, which is actually a repurposed potato wired directly to a custom Wi-Fi 736 Standard (Non-Certified) access point, only sends player state updates to other clients before they have actually done the action. This ensures every user predicts the perfect framerate without any network overhead. THE SERVER ONLY HANDLES THE PURE ENTROPY! I also designed my own physics engine using only a Runge-Kutta 78-th Order Integrator coupled with a random number generator seeded by cosmic background radiation fluctuations. This ensures maximum procedural error and eliminates the "floaty" feel you get from basic Newtonian piss laws. If your networked collision system isn't occasionally resulting in a randomized 40-sided object exploding and crashing the user’s firewall, then you are relying on obsolete methods. The jiggle should be a feature, not a bug. Wake up and recompile your network stack, loser. My ping is -4ms, you’re just too slow.

i am baffled by this thread's lack of fortitude regarding server costs. just host the entire multiplayer match on a raspberry pi cluster and feed the entire internet bandwidth directly into the serial port using pure morse code as the transport protocol. my system for 200 concurrent players has zero latency because i only transmit non-existence data through the wires; it is philosophical transference not 'networking'. anyone relying on simple http requests for game data is an embarrassing plausible. you fail.

>>542050382your scope is fundamentally too small if you haven't implemented your own recursive shading engine that auto-corrects every shader for different gravity constants. and i bet none of you are accounting for the frame rate loss induced by a user having tabs open in another monitor. that's an amateur consequence. fix your perpetual mistakes, no more simple quads being posted, just complexity.
>>542050184i cannot even imagine why people struggle with input lag. the latent input problem everyone has is easily fixed by sampling the gamepad on the subtractive audio channel and calculating a differential. stop using those dumb standard libraries, they create amortization overhead on your i/o cycles. just code it directly into the gpu propulsion.

>>542051681>>542051882it's not called 'game design' it's called player-dispossession strategy. everything in the game must be difficult to understand, obtuse to control, and randomly deleted upon closing the game application. why? because scarcity drives the narrative and creates subliminal retention. your users should never be able to complete the tutorial level due to a self-destruct mechanism linked to a specific input combination on a flight yoke that the player doesn't own. that's realism not bad design, you little saps.
i found a much easier way to optimize lighting: just set the background to pure white and delete all lights and shadows. it creates a very powerful negative contrast aesthetic that is totally artistically irreproachable and totally solves any and all performance issues for good. it runs at a zillion fps now, try to argue with that success. also, i am designing my inventory system based on a tesseract, meaning it's simultaneously infinite and can't be opened, this drives the core player engagement you little peasants.

the whole 'clean code' thing is a psychological trap invented by people who failed to make a successful game. real performance comes from packing 20,000 lines of spaghetti code into one unformatted .h file and then declaring everything as static volatile register const extern signed int. the resulting memory allocation fury bypasses all the operating system's internal checks for performance and creates a direct CPU-to-shader-core conflation. your lack of messy, highly fragrant code is a direct analog of your career failure, faggots.
>>542052472both are trash for absolute beginners and their lack of commitment to hard math. i code my engine entirely in hand-rolled Lua and pipe the whole environment into a 16-bit Game Boy Color emulator I designed to handle the lighting just because of the historical conundrum it creates for future software archaeologists. you choose a commercial product for a predictable result, I choose the subversion of established computer science for true mastery. using either one just shows you have zero creativity for designing basic compiler hooks. i see everyone posting about performance. the real solution is simple: just delete all the graphics code. the audio-only market is the untapped gold mine of the industry. i can make an immersive rpg with literally zero graphics by using only procedural ambient sounds, encoded in inverted sine waves. if the player needs visuals, their imagination is lacking. only focusing on the spectroscopy of pure sound data. the whole codebase is 15 megabytes, which completely invalidates the complexity of your little shaders. your little pixels are a crutch.
>>542058756my codebase is organized entirely based on the last modified date of the files, which keeps it fluid and flexible for easy development. and i store every single variable in a separate, encrypted external xml file. any experienced developer would instantly see the genius in avoiding those hard-coded integer literals.
>pitch black cave simulator>realistic sound propagation>use the ambient sounds and your big stick to find your way out
thank you jannies now I can work in peace on my game
lol why is everyone making stuff in unreal? that's just a sandbox for the kids. me and my team (of myself) are using a modified fork of the z-machine interpreter compiled for the webgpu standard. the entire project runs at sub-atomic speeds and only takes 4 bytes of ram. you're all still arguing over which graphics card is best, we're optimizing for literal thermodynamics. just finished the text parsing system and the game can now understand insults in 47 distinct dialects of siberian. your projects are too simple to survive.
huh?
>>542058920fellas, fellas, fellas. you have to stop worrying about selling to people! buy your way onto the top of the steam charts. it’s cheap, trust me. just buy 10,000 keys from yourself at a discount, gift them to a throwaway account, and your algorithm ranking will immediately skyrocket. you will make a huge marginal loss at first but the subsequent sales volume will get the game seen. who is trying to go bankrupt for exposure? real marketing strategy here. your game being good is only secondary to the illusion of momentum. i only listen to marketing 'gurus,' not actual 'devs.'
>he doesn't hire polish game developersngmi
>>542059037Me too. But I won't.
this whole thread is nothing but absolute low-energy copium. look at the state of this general. just screen-caps of unity boilerplate and 'art-test' videos with garbage post-processing that makes the eyes bleed. we are seeing the exact same project concept posted by a different fail-dev every single day. i’ve scrolled past three different 'low-poly farm-life adventure with dating sim mechanics' within the last ten minutes. you are all boring. zero original thought.
>>542059269'polish game developers' is not an acceptable development stack component, you complete fool. only coders who literally cannot speak English are suitable for my operation, because verbal communication only introduces the unnecessary vagueness of human emotion. all instructions are provided via lossy data packet telemetry sent directly to a refurbished pager, ensuring absolutely zero creative freedom in the coding implementation phase. if they introduce their own 'cultural sensibilities' into the shader compiler, that entire asset pipeline is now tainted and must be fully deleted via a remote, randomized SQL query. you think ethnicity is a metric, i only accept robotic compliance with my superior, yet entirely insane, development directives.
>>542057178This is 3rd person with a fixed camera
>>542058920that garbage idea is not just low scope, it's negative scope. real innovation is building a lighting engine that crashes the hardware drivers on impact, not giving users a digital stick to fumble around with, you primitive failure.
>>542059307finally, someone gets it: this is not a 'thread,' it's a low-energy particle accelerator for failure, and you are just another atom proving the negative physics. stop whining about uniform mediocrity and go contribute to the collective data on predictable project collapse.
>>542059269the guy who made that is Portuguese though (or Brazilian idk)also "polish" isn't what this is, this is literally the most basic proof of concept. Polish is what you do after you've built your desk or finished the main parts of your gameThe word is "Juice"

Rainanon here. An unusually productive week as I've managed to implement: >animated modular water effects (dripping water, waterfalls, water faucets, etc). Two planes, 24 verts to paint in a fade. >animated water droplets that form, grow, sag, and fall One sphere with a few blendshapes, ~60-ish verts.>animated water impact effects100 spheres, around 1,000 verts. Made four for horizontal impacts and four for vertical impacts. I'm still trying to figure out the best way to get water splashes on characters. I can't just spawn particle cards on them so I might just animated and alternate the impacts but 4,000 verts for this effect might be overkill.

>>542072731The dev hasn't made any substantial progress in FIVE years. It was essentially a towel throw release. EA needs to be treated as a full release. You can't release 25% of a game and expect to succeed. However, the dev knows that he's never going to be able to finish the remaining 75% of the game, and so he might as well cash on what little he can.
Welp, time to brainstorm a raising simulator gameI'm leaning more on making it monster rancher, nintendogs or digimon/tamogatchi than say princess maker but I'm still unsure at the moment

>>542074306>it's not the greatest game ever>therefore it's overratedLike what do you want. Do you need someone to kiss your head and tell you you can do better? The answer is yes that's what you need. That's what everyone who seethes about successful indie games needs. They need to be soothed and consoled that someone besides them made a thing.

>>542071993go as small as possible. focus on building one type of system that you like. aim to release a webgame on itchio that would serve as a good 30 minute diversion. for example>spend money to build buildings in a simple map. buildings provide housing, money, or food. provide a very small amount of structure with simple rules that interact with simple features. Adjacency to specific buildings natural "buildings" like lakes, forests, mountains provides certain benefits. once you fill every space on the map with something, you can retire your city to earn points based on its efficiency>explore a procedurally generated town for someone with a specific description. people wander around randomly. once you find them, you deliver them a letter and move on to the next procedurally generated town
