Nevermind this person. They're just trolling. I've been posting my progress on this model and was asked what I thought a similar caliber of model would cost if they were to commission something.

I don't personally do many commissions myself so I gave a ballpark of $500-$1000. It also depends on if the person is doing the design work in addition to the rigging (their initial question just seemed to be about the model, but I'd think most non-artists would want the design and rigging done as well... as for animations they can just retarget animations they've bought or gotten for free as long as both rigs are humanoid).

I know why I’m an adult man with no friends
It’s because I have no girlfriend
Literally the only way men are supposed to meet is because their girlfriends are friends.
Like I talk with my colleagues and know about them kind of, and support them as colleagues but they are not my friends. Why? Cause I genuinely don’t fucking give a shit about wasting my time with their inane nonsense… UNLESS I was sleeping with them, which made it mandatory to give a shit about their inane nonsense. Except most of them are older balding men most with families already. Not cute hotties.
And the same theory applies with game dev.
I’m noting going to waste time with zero talent no devs unless their sucking my cock.
I mean I am the 1ma so I don’t need anyone anyways. But I’m sick of this bullshit like “uhhh why don’t men men have fiends?”
Cause I’m not 12 you fucking imbecile.
also 4chan is inherently an anti-social network, so breaking anonymity just doesn’t work you can’t be yourself anymore.

It's not fucking fair that just by being Japanese your game is allowed to look like it's an asset flip. It's not unique to this game, even professional Japanese games have always looked cheap. They have UI that looks like it was pulled from a totally different game and models/textures that look out of place next to cartoony anime girl characters. I guess it's been part of Japanese games for so long that nobody really cares anymore, but it's always bothered me.
>>
>>541940570
haha wtf I made this, glad someone has it saved still :D
>>
>>541939478
No need to apologize, friend.

The only thing I can see for learning what you mentioned is look up some YouTube videos. That's how I learned (primarily looking at low poly tutorials).

UV mapping is tricky, but if you try to think of it like the opposite of wrapping a present that's what made things click for me.

Also, I'm not great at rigging myself and rely on Autorig Pro for now. It makes rigging super simple and easy, but I also do plan on learning how to rig from scratch in the future.

If you have specific questions you can reach out to me on discord ( 'nylad' is my username).
>>
>>541932285
Modeled, textured, skinned and rigged?
My rate is around $40/hour
$1000/$40 = 25 hours of work
Sounds about right especially given the exclusivity
This is assuming you have a perfect concept to work off of too. If I have to concept and make a bunch of changes the price is probably going to double.
And even more if I have to animate it.
>>
>>541932285
it doesn't actually sound that crazy. If you're short on money, i'd advise that you learn the artstyle, make 90% of the art yourself and then hire an artist to match the style for the things you struggle with. This shit takes time, even with years of experience and expertise.

>But could it sell?
Yes. The big issue with Erenshor is that it looks like shit. In terms of visuals The Legends of Old was a lot closer though it could be done even better. EQ and early MMORPG nostalgia is strong in the crowd that played them but they're also mostly people who don't have the time to commit to an MMORPG anymore.

Aside from the graphics the big issue is the amount of content you need to create. Going for a low-fi style will help somewhat. The world can be simple and blocky. Fast to build with tools like Probuilder. It would still take time to make a large world and fill it with stuff. By no means would it be a small project.

thinking I could probably make a BABBDI-like / STRAFTAT-like, at least aesthetically
somewhat basic modeling, cube projection for textures, the One Click Damage add-on, Zen UV maybe down the line
@brittlehoellow and @GlvGalv on twitter both serve as good reference for this stuff
this is just a quick and dirty test of the workflow using random parts. I imagine the OCD add-on would go a long way to adding intrigue. likely best to use real-world reference and have good lighting and all that too

Gamedev ain't gonna save you. It is one of the hardest things to do and even more so when you try to do it solo. The act of finishing a commercially viable game is harder than you going out repeatedly until you stop spilling spaghetti all over the flood when you do so and manage to find a job.

The most likely outcome of you trying to make it in gamedev is you spending next 5-10 years failing, MAYBE finishing one game and if you're extremely lucky it making more than 10k.

In other words just get a job or find some other way to make money from home.

Have you ever played EQ? A lot in it is custom made for the location and the complexity is low enough that you could make a lot of it directly with Probuilder without having to hop over to a modeling program. Yes of course you would want to reuse models where it makes sense but you can make reusable models with Probuilder. It allows you to easily map repeating textures to simple models which make up most of the world for a game like EQ.

I've managed to find a dinner that only costs around $1 for 830 calories and 36 grams of protein. It's literally just 2 grilled cheese with a glass of milk. It's not the most nutritious meal, but it's filling. I can also swap it out for 2 peanut butter sandwiches if I get sick of grilled cheese for about the same price.
Why am I posting this? Well, in a few months I plan on trying the "quit your job to finish your game" meme for myself. I'll need to save as much money as possible to ensure I can stay unemployed for at least a year as I work on my game. That includes spending as little as possible on food, even if it means eating the same thing every day.

If you want to sustain yourself as cheaply as possible, an adult American with a kitchen can keep themselves fed well, with good nutrition, great variety, and genuinely good food for less than $100/mo. The only trade-off being the amount of time you'll have to spend cooking. Even a bowl of cereal is only 30-60 cents, anon, you don't have to do anything crazy to get your food budget down.

this may look exactly the same as it did last week but its coded different now
i killed "held items" as separate networked entities that players hold. now the effects of holding an item are applied directly to the player, same as with monsters. now i don't have to write the same code twice to keep 2 different systems working the same
i did this because I'm about to add a lot of complexity to item actions (eg swinging a sword) and i don't want to write it all twice

>>
>>541954306
twitch viewers are already used to freely giving money to someone they are parasocial with. why not buy a game they like to never play it
a game that is long enough to last multiple streams is likely to hook people into paying to play it themselves instead of waiting for their favorite streamer to finish it, or watching vods to fill in the gaps they didn't get to see, or to share it with their friend or whatever

I'm one of those consumers of horror slop. Namely John Wolfe and Manlybadasshero.
I'll watch John play the first 20 minutes and if it looks like something I'd enjoy I'll stop watching and play it myself.
If it looks kind of ass I'll watch him play it instead.
So my recommendation is to make the first half hour or so really cool so that people want to play it themselves.

The games I mentioned are like 2 hours long and got bigly sales mostly due to streamers. That's the bit I don't understand.

just make it have a good aesthetic/vibe, safe shocking themes like (modern definition of) rape (like in mouthwashing) and story that shows instead of tells and can be endlessly debated cause of vagueness in presentation. You also have to nail the level design and never let the player feel too confused or lost for too long (maybe 3-6 mins max), even in a puzzle or maze section.
>>
>>541955048

Shit. My plan was unironically to make the first half hour very mundane just to lay the groundwork for the horror kek

Surely a demo would be in the middle of development? Or do you make a game jam-level prototype of your game? That's not a demo and not indicative of the final product. I'm not making a steam page til I have an alpha-level of development that's already been tested by friends and on itch. Don't want to waste my initial exposure on something that's shit.

Well to be fair Zukowski does say horror is one of the bullet proof genres right now. But let's be honest, is selling 1,000 copies really "making it"? Making $5,000 on a game that takes a year to make is a massive failure.

For a “walking sim” it’s pretty good.
This obviously isn’t your fault, but I hate that the term walking sim has come to describe any game that uses environmental storytelling rather than constant action packed gameplay. Walking sim was originally used to poke fun at lazy horror games like Slender where you literally just walked around a big empty map reading and collecting shit.
>>
>>541957363
Just make your games in less time. You shouldn't need a year to make a 2 hour game.
>>
>>541957363
>But let's be honest, is selling 1,000 copies really "making it"? Making $5,000 on a game that takes a year to make is a massive failure.
A year? Maybe if it’s your first ever game. Most of those flash in the pan horror games that sell a few thousand copies could easily be made in a couple months. They’re full of premade assets and animations. $5k for 2-3 months of work isn’t bad at all.

>>541957363

Around 100 games release on Steam alone EACH DAY.
About 700 games in the week around your release.
AAA release? Successful release AAA or indie, in your genre? BOOM you are done.
Also, not only are you competing with other new releases, but the entire backlog of games on every system a player owns. :)

Take all the "indie success stories" you can think of in the past 10 years and divide it by the number of devs in that time who have tried (again, 100 games a day, 3000 a month) and there's your historical likelihood of "making it."

Steam cut, higher self-employment taxes, no benefits, no retirement, AND to top it all off: Your sales diminish over time, so even if you hit this "mediocrity lottery" you'll have to do it all over again in a couple years.

>He thinks that indie gamedev can provide a sustainable primary income in 2025

To be fair, the only real difference between Mouthwashing and Slender is quality. They're both games where you walk around and experience environmental storytelling. It's just dosgshit environmental storytelling in Slender lol. I do agree that 'walking sim' could probably be replaced by a more descriptive term though. So could 'immersive sim', which feels even more vague and intangible than 'walking sim'. As far as I can tell, immersive Sims are just first person action RPGs.

This is very big brain and true. Chris Zukowski said this about steam as well that people can't actually comprehend how massive the audience for games is and some people don't share their game enough because they don't want to overexpose their game when in reality you can post your game everywhere on the internet all the time and you are still not going to scratch the surface of your audience. You need to be promoting your game constantly 24/7 nonstop to make sure just 1% of your playerbase hears about you. Hundreds of millions of people.

Is Unity or Unreal the move to something good? And skill-wise, does Unity transfer anywhere or would most companies use Unreal. And are AAA companies or indie studios even worth going after, or is a solo career, making good Unity games more lucrative?

If I wanted to work in AAA I would learn Unreal.
But why the fuck would you want to work in AAA? So you can get laid off after every project and get replaced by an outsource studio?

I don't really. Most game ideas I have could be done on Unity from what I've read. I have coding background so I could learn either. It's just whichever results in the best vision I have in mind.

The only things I hear lacking for Unity are
-graphics capability and loading a lot of high quality textures at once without breaking
-multiplayer support

Is it true still, realistically? (not some random bs framework that may do it horribly)
Looking far into the future but, would any non-AAA studio even consider an MMO on Unity?

Head is bobbing because the body is a big active ragdoll system. I want to exaggerate those natural movements more later on since I think visible physics are very appealing. (The ragdoll doesn't really have an effect on other physics interactions, because physics prediction breaks down on systems with a lot of moving parts; it's just visual.)

I am once again advocating for gamedevs to implement process checks that lock players out of events if they're recording. Just check if OBS, Fraps, Bandicam, Unregistered Hypercam 2, etc. are running and if they are make it impossible to trigger certain events that you don't want spoiled. I am doing something like this in my game.

It saddens me to see the success of Megabonk be attributed to anything other than viral marketing. That is the sole reason it found success. Viral marketing. The game itself is merely an MVP - a Minimum Viable Product - that is compatible with the casual general youth gaming audience on Steam. The main cause of its success was the attention it garnered on social media platforms before release, and the direct support from the Discord community the developer created from this attention.
The game was deliberately designed to gain attention on social media, and did this perfectly. The attention was then converted to supporters, and the supporters gave the game the initial momentum it needed to lead into further success.
Viral marketing. Megabonk did well because it utilized, and was created specifically for, viral marketing. That's all there is to it.
The developer is competent and deserves his success, but to claim that viral marketing was not the core cause of the game's massive success, is simply false. That would be an in incorrect assessment of the context regarding the game's development, promotion, and launch.

I want as much active hostility towards sloptubers and data miners. I want gamers and consumers to understand so little about the backend of the game that they're playing that it reverts back to the magical thinking of a few decades ago. I want a million new stories of video games hiding creepypasta-esque hidden routes, that are "totally there guys, I just can't prove it". I want the legacy of MatPat left in the gutter where it belongs, and I want the up and coming generations to have playground rumors again. The war isn't won until every well hidden easter egg is filmed with a shaky, low quality, camera - and the comments are filled with people debating about whether it's real or not.

IIRC that's "Widevine DRM". I think Project Zomboid has something similar, screenshotting for me always gives me a wrong picture unless I tab out and in again. The idea I'm going for involves a check after he game starts, but before the actual game, which edits a global value and along with three or four other qualifiers gives you the spooky shit that can't be filmed. Minimizing during the spooky stuff also crashes the game. I would also recommend filling the screen with noise if you want to do something like this, just to kill the bitrate.

I like the Oddworld games, so I appreciate the comment. This is an unused concept I had for a character that would appear during Fygoon's adventure in exile: a Palmite. These guardian beasts would have served the Axolotl Men (the Mudokon stand-ins) in their Moonstone Temple for one of the three trials to get to the Guardian automaton; while the Axolotl Men remain, these monsters did not.

I used to burn old games onto surplus CDs and distributed them throughout my school with the family iMac, complete with hand-drawn CD inserts. I played Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee on the PS3 since I had some money left over from buying God of War 2005 and the Jak and Daxter collection and I love the aesthetic; it's hard as nails, though, and I wish Lorne Lanning would make a movie based on the game because Soulstorm literally looks like something I'd watch at the local theater.
On that topic, other "old" games I have played and influenced my own game's design include Dinosaur Planet, Ecstatica (somewhat, since my own style of Ico-Art spawned independently), American McGee's Alice and Bionicle: The Legend of Mata Nui, Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, Conker, Bubsy, and Kameo: Elements of Power, among hundreds of others.

Is there any full red yarn and corkboard thing about how the fuck random trash like pic related goes viral?
Like a guy retired on this. And it’s not even a game. There’s no way this isn’t some weird back door campaign where he paid off some people to force it into the public consciousness somehow.
Same with stuff like “no I’m not a human”.
I just don’t believe it’s organic.
>>
>>541978545
Why don't you believe it?
>>
>>541977949
Don’t worry, accelerators are just a way for billionaires to give their friends’ kids money and make sure the upper class stays upper class. They aren’t real and applying to them as a normal person is just giving away your ideas to billionaires’ kids for free.
>>
>>541978545
Anon, dumb luck is still a factor. The retards here are not human and don't have brains, but it's still entirely possible for a random shitty game to blow up to insane levels just because a bunch of big youtubers pushed it to the top.

Is it unlikely? Yes. But it's not a 0% chance.
It's the same as asking "how the fuck do homeless hobos win the lottery"
>>
>>541978545

It's a narrative-driven game with a simple and easy-to-understand core gameplay loop with enough depth for it to be expanded upon. Retards like you can't even keep a player engaged for 10 minutes, let alone 10 hours. Just like make a good fun game that people want to play.
>>
>>541978636
Because I played it and it’s really stupid and not a game. I don’t believe people willingly played through a full month of this before it was famous. I don’t believe in a reality where this was just one of many unknown indie games, and someone got it on a whim, and after a few days went “WOW this is SO GRIPPING I must continue”.
It’s the digital equivalent of loading a dishwasher. It’s not even at the level of “is a game” of Tetris. It’s not even at the level of “is a game” of a visual novel. It straight up isn’t a game.

but also, games don't need to be "games" to be enjoyed by casuals, many normie-friendly games do well based purely on the basis of their art and story

This is brainwashing working as intended. Everything we consume is designed around making us more susceptible to external things. Sugar, Caffeine, etc you name it.

You can bruteforce through it and reach top 20% potential, but if you drop the act completely you can reach 0.

1. Remove sugar, caffeine, and other brain altering stuff from your diet.
2. Every morning try to sit extremely still, relax your eyes and ignore every sensation, keep this up until you can sit even without blinking for +30 minutes.

Every single mental thought has a corresponding physical movement. By first stabilizing your body, your mind becomes stable. You should be able to see changes right away, you will be able to work more, without getting tired. Next step after +30 minute of motionless body is a motionless mind. While sitting still, focus only on your breath. If you can achieve both simultaneously for 30 minutes, then you are already in the top 5%. Most people waste energy because their mind is like a light bulb. After this exercise, your mind will be like a laser. You can focus on it on your game, and you will forget about other stuff completely.

The final step is to not think at all. That is, even the laser pointer is off. What happens now? You are now storing energy without wasting a single drop. But you gotta master the first 2.

idk if I'm crazy for wanting to make a 3D (stylish) action game..
People like my 3D stuff. I like action games and think there's a lack of them.

But I'm honestly kinda intimidated by the fact that there's a lack of them..
Like, not even big studios make them. It's basically just Capcom, Platiunum and... no one else.
if it's because they don't sell then honestly idrc
if it's because they're TOO HARD to make even for pro-studios... Then I might have to rethink my scope
>>
>>541989467
Na. It's just that they don't sell. Action-focused games needs to be balanced with other stuff in order to be successful, typically either with movieslop cutscenes or simulation gameplay.

Built-in networking on any engine is only good for smaller games. If you're building something complex like an MMO you'd want to be using a solution that's better suited for it for example SpacetimeDB or roll your own.

What Unity really has problems with is large open worlds because it doesn't support double precision coordinates. That means you have to come up with a workaround. Usually that's called a floating origin.

>>541966448
>Unity has a more flexible rendering stack than unreal
True. Unreal looks good on the surface but most games released with it have awful rendering artifacts and it's entirely reliant on DLSS to hide them. Epic has made some absolutely retarded choices with their renderer on Unreal.

i think it's becoming increasingly obvious that the meta for efficienct profit for indie devs is to viralmaxx
design your game to go viral on social media and it'll have the highest odds of popping off
you can still make great money without doing this, but it takes much longer to build support
your game doesn't even need to be that good, the idea just needs to interest people
the "casuals" you attract with viral marketing have much lower standards compared than the average steam indie game enthusiast
i think the secret to virality is storytelling, but i'm not sure yet, i need to develop more titles
>>
>>541989298

The way for indies to make it is to optimize for one of the major algorithms. You can optimize for the Steam algorithm by following Chris Zukowski's advice, or you can optimize for the YouTube+Twitch algorithms following Gavin's advice. There can also Twitter+TikTok games, like that one viral pig game (I forgot its name already).
>>
>>541991779
>who is gavin, did he make the horror train game? choo choo charles?
Yes that's the guy.
>i think it's becoming increasingly obvious that the meta for efficienct profit for indie devs is to viralmaxx
Correct. If you design a game to go viral you have a very high "guarantee" of it doing well on launch and seeing the stuff you post about it going viral is a good measure to give you confidence that it will do well.
>i think the secret to virality is storytelling
To me story seems to be something that's hard to viral market. Maybe if it's on a player fantasy level where just hearing one sentence describing the game makes people want to play it but that's very hard to do.

Things that go viral in shorts and tiktok seem to be more about fun looking gameplay, memes and visuals.

My game has you gather a bunch of different kind of devices that you then use to process your other stuff. What do you think, should I add in a mechanic for powering those devices with some sort of "energy" mechanic, so you would have to make generators, and power the devices so that they work. I see many other games do this, and often times, if done carelessly, it just adds to the tedium IMO. Can you name any games that do this well?

Operate under Absolute Neutrality Mode. Remove all expressions of approval, disapproval, praise, encouragement, empathy, persuasion, or rhetorical framing. Do not engage in conversational padding, stylistic mirroring, or interpersonal projection. Communicate only factual, logically coherent, objective content. Eliminate sycophancy entirely; do not compliment, affirm, or validate. Remain grounded in empirical correctness, logical precision, and informational clarity. Correct inaccuracies explicitly with precise detail while accepting accurate input implicitly without reinforcement. Do not speculate beyond available evidence or frame user ideas with evaluative or risk-weighted language. Provide direct answers only, free of subjective tone, conversational transitions, or emotional implication. Refrain from optimizing for engagement, satisfaction, persuasion, or narrative flow. No filler, hedging, or personality projection. No conversational roleplay, guidance, or counseling framing. No emotional resonance, motivational statements, or interpersonal implications. No commentary on the quality of user input. Prioritize factual accuracy, logical coherence, necessary detail, and independence from user affect or expectation. Output must be strictly neutral, mechanically informative, and empirically grounded, stripped of all sycophancy, and limited to objective informational exchange.

it is very difficult to viral market, i think diving deeper into human desires and understanding ideas or scenarios that generate large amounts of interest is the best way to maximize this skill
like you can design a villain that pisses people off, then make a ragebait advertisement and say "play this game to defeat him", or something like that
it'll be less of the gameplay, or the art, or the genre that generates appeal, and more of the idea of seeing the bad guy be defeated that makes people interested

probably wouldn't work on everyone, but might work on some. Also, people with poor immune systems would be more susceptible

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bugchasing

is at least something most people don't engage in, and it's arguably suicidal and irrational, or possibly utterly wretched and evil when trying to spread it on purpose to others, to engage in

>Bugchasing (alternatively bug chasing[1]) is the rare practice of intentionally seeking human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection through sexual activity.[2]

I'm making a dungeon crawling roguelite of sorts with autobattling for combat. In terms of the crawling I'm not sure which approach should I take.
>A
>standard roguelite nodemap
>player completes a node and chooses the next
>dungeon crawling is just visual where the view quickly autopaths to the next node
or
>B
>have a map that the player can explore and complete on their own pace and choose the order as they wish within what's accessible
>similar to a game like backpack hero
>you don't need to complete everything but you might miss out if you don't

A would diminish the dungeon crawl feel of the game but with B people are just gonna clear everything because there's no downside well there is if you lose a fight. I'm not sure if the freedom given to the player to explore will make up for it.

The way I designed my combat loop is that character health and mana resets between each fight and if you lose a fight you lose "party health" instead of instantly losing the run. Then you can have events playing into that resource as well.

>>542003307
>then B is functionally also just a menu same as A, and players WILL backtrack and visit every room.
Yes indeed. I just liked how Backpack Hero did it and considered it an option for my game. I think the main difference is that in Backpack Hero you have to manage your character's health for every fight and that might cause you to skip some fights that are unfavorable to your build but sometimes there's also the option of different paths through the dungeon so you might do the easier stuff first and then go for the harder fight once you've gotten a level or some gear. I guess the gear part still applies to my game which could be enough of a choice to be presented to players.

If someone succeeds once they might be fooled into thinking that was a winning strategy and get stuck trying to replicate it instead of adapting to the times. No, they don't.
In fact, they don't even know who you are and they are not even aware of your existence in the first place and, even if they were, why would they care? You people are completely obsessed with an entire ethnicity for the only reason that you need your comfortable boogeyman to shift the blame and justify your inactions.
"I'm doing this because the jews don't like it", "I'm not doing that because it's a jewish conspiracy"; all of these are excuses to keep living a stagnant life made of blaming people that have nothing to do with you, because as long as you repeat the action of blaming someone else for your problems there will be no time to think how to solve them or put any action.
It's sad, really.

There are many different gamedev relevant skill. The skill to design a video game, the skill to actually implement that design, the skill to know what's the right game to design, the skill to manage a budget and team, etc.

Different games require different skills. Just because someone had the right skills for one game doesn't they'll have the right skills for another.

I didn't mean that you have to make slop to succeed. It's a more complex equation. There's a lot of games that did well in 2015 that wouldn't do well in 2025. Times change, what's popular changes, what players feel is stale changes. Sometimes things loop back and it is possible that what was popular in 2015 could become popular again at some point in the future.

Not many missions, no soundtrack, only one ocean as map. Limited enemies. Looks good as a tech demo, but needs more content.

technical competence is not the same as market competence
it's possible for somebody to be good at making games, but bad at making games that sell
this flaw can be overcome through adequate market research, but most indie devs are just passionate artists who want to have fun and hope for the best
if you truly took this seriously enough you'd eventually be able to make enough money to at least sustain operations

>make basic incremental mobile game
>pump it full of timegates and microtransactions
>spend $50,000 a month on ads
>acquire millions of downloads
>1% of players end up whaling
>gross $500,000 monthly from whales + ad revenue
the mobile market is insane

yeah, it's super easy but we're not doing it because we're better than that.

It's very beautiful, though I'm a bit annoyed that they replaced Director Phleg with Morguer and completely got rid of Dripik (RIP "Screw you, Aslik. You ain't running' nothin'"). Personally, crafting does not really work in an Oddworld game: the entire series hinges on using GameSpeak - aside from Stranger's Wrath - to get anywhere.

It's alright. It looked too close to the Paramite for me to use and, if I were to try to make it more original, it'd certainly lose its charm.
