Skip Lady Dracula - it doesn't have any of the design or charm of a classicvania, its all fluff. Over-reliance on auto scrolling levels and you have no control over changing into a bat or ghost, you just have weird "platforming" sections like Donkey Kong Country barrel blasts using them. Music was the highlight but even if is very basic and has extremely short loops.

If you want good games like this just play Curse of the Moon 1 & 2 instead (and really, if you were interested in Lady Dracula in the first place you have likely already played these anyway).

gonna shill this one a bit more
A nice R-type clone with good stage theme and generally nice enemy design so far, not much going in stage design so far, but it's just the two first stages in the demo, but you can see more stages in the store page if you're actually interested.
Only downsides I have with it is grazing autism giving benefits, and the pilots lore tidbits are cringe, clearly not going to have the same effect as the depressing and doomed world of R-type.

>Hand-me-downs
Weird card game with 0% juice and gamefeel. But the concept is kinda fun.

>Tabulo
Chess, but Balatro, but autochess. I had to turn the music off. Doesn't feel good to play but might get there with some work.

>Solo Chess
Tabulo but worse.

>Slots and Daggers
Everything seems to have too much health and you're boned against certain enemies if you don't have healing or shields. But it feels nice and has potential.

>Slot or Not
Slots and Daggers but with rabbits. Even the tutorial fight takes forever, I hate it.

>Black Ox
Blackjack, but tic tac toe, but Balatro. I didn't like it.

>Placid Plastic Deck
Inscryption but ducks, supposedly. The demo ends before you even get to play with ducks so it's just some tutorial battles and a lot of story.

>Cino Cross
A nonagram roguelike. Not bad but I'm not into those puzzles.

My picks from what I've played during prefest

https://store.steampowered.com/app/3123770/XOL_Space_Mech_Wars/
Holy fucking giga jank kino
Had to push through the first few minutes of getting used to the crunchy graphics. Turning on Hard mode (drift) as well mainly because it felt more like I expected it too.
Can tell the dev was also a fan of the ps2/ps3 various gundam titles, even feel some Another Century's Episode influence in there. This is MY kind of jank, this was made for me.
Xieg Xeon

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1836560/Aether__Iron/
Trigger warning Woman Protag.
Writing seems to be acceptable, if a little stiff.
I'm interested in learning more about the setting at this point.
Not sure if the tactics rpg sections will be any good. Customizing your car is cool though.
I was ready to instantly hate this, it's got me hooked now.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/2878580/Key_Fairy/
I'm a big fan of grappling hook based movement.
Responsive controls and quick pace felt good.
Can be pretty tough, some of those later multi enemy type encounters are not easy for sure.
Visually not my favorite, readability can be rough in some rooms, with foreground obscuring the area.
World has a surprising amount of exploration required even in this demo, very interested for release.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/3888920/Pulse/
Thats some good time trial antigrav SPEED shit.
Fantastic sense of speed.
The warp mechanic being integral to a good time might be my one complaint. Too much emphasis on plotting straight lines, nailing the deceleration and hard turn points compared to other flying/piloting actions.
I'll definitely keep an eye on it as development progresses

https://store.steampowered.com/app/3090810/Truckful/
Truck control is a little touchy, the isometric camera angle can make it really fucky to tell your precise heading.
Little bit of character interaction was brief and cute.
Demo super short.

I'm too lazy to use a proper image editor so the options are as follows.
Left uses the store page images but is cut to squares, right uses the covers but also has titles (and is much easier for me since I just have to use the built in search for the game). If you have a mosaic-making alternative that will let me just copy paste the image links and will keep them properly sized let me know.

I read the dialogue for a while but skipped through it eventually because it's just a demo. Then the gameplay started and it's not particularly fun. It's like playing a budget JRPG that begrudgingly has combat instead of a proper action game. Didn't even bother getting through the first zone. I would have wishlisted it if it said Coming soon or 2027 or something but if it's coming out Q1 2026 then no thanks. They should have just made a VN or something.

House 2 as a demo takes a while to get going so I just shut it off. I've always had a low opinion of demo sequels.

Your first game is essentially the demo. If I liked it enough to be interested in a sequel, I already know your style and competence pretty well. Indie developers are less likely to make colossal blunders during sequels than big budget studios.

So yeah, I liked House 1, I will get House 2.

Pathologic 2 had a 25gb install size. That demo more or less probably equates closely to the actual final finished product size. Not that egregious when put into perspective. Considering the demo of the game likely has most of aspects of the final game assets and map within it.

Very Epic Boat Driving Sim. Very Boaty. Drove the boat for 5 minutes before I got bored because I don't have much interest in boats.

Anyway, I suspect this isn't an indie game anyway, and it's in bad taste for companies that actually have advertising budgets to be using these festivals. It's like taking from the food bank when you have a job. Also games with the prefix "RE-" are supposed to be about zombies.

thought it was going to be some cool zombie animal game. what a letdown. I've been letdown before, that zombie game at a zoo turned out to just be streamer bait as well.

Who told you that? Witchfire is awesome. But it's not to everyone's tastes and I wouldn't exactly say that if you loved Painkiller then you'll like Witchfire. It has extraction shooter elements, and that might piss off people that don't like those mechanics. Of course everyone has their own opinions and considering it's in early access state the more common complaint you'll hear right now is lack of enemy variety. But for what it does have it's alright. If you're against paying for EA then it's understandable to wait on it.

I knew I shouldn't have expected much when they described it as a Soulslike but good god what a shitty game where the entire point is killing bosses with a million cuts and dealing with a small stamina bar. And they add onto it by having a very annoying phase two transition for every boss where you have a lengthy chase sequence running away from the boss to get to its next arena, and having the second phases all have a lot of projectile spam. The demo has three bosses plus a pushover tutorial boss so there's a lot here if you like that kind of gameplay but boy not me.

I played Shatterland:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/4020910/Shatterland_Demo/

I checked this out because I'm waiting for Surroundead to add multiplayer (looks like I'll be waiting a while, still...) and holy shit this game is fucking bad. Its Unreal Engine slop from top to bottom and is a "hold E for five seconds to open everything in sight" simulator.

Strangely enough the weapons felt ok but the enemies are extremely overpowered in comparison to what you have. There is some sort of leveling system but after I gained five levels for just clicking on some tall grass (harvesting fiber apparently) I gave up. This game makes Valheim look like a 10/10 masterpiece with zero flaws in comparison.

The wait for Surroundead to have multiplayer continues...

Don't get the appeal of zombie survival games that aren't Project Zomboid. None of them ever seem to want to place emphasis on the fact that you're really fighting a zombie outbreak. Then again a lot of zomboid players like to deemphasize it by customising their games to have no biting infection mechanics. But in regards to being hardcore they're all shallow. As many complaints as people have about the game, no one has surpassed it. I really don't know understand the appeal of Surroundead.

I get what this game is going for but this is a really poor demo to showcase it with. You get put into a nearly empty area with nothing to really find. The demo is basically just showcasing the looting / simulation aspects of the game - which are pretty deep from the looks of it. This is the kind of simulation game where you have to individually load bullets into magazines, manage ammo types, gun wear and tear, equipment wear and tear, water, food, mental, temperature, etc, etc. Maybe if there was actually something to do once you spend 10 minutes equipping your gear and loading your gun(s) it would be more compelling. The graphics look nice at least.
3/10 as far as the demo goes. No idea how indicative of the final product it is as there is nothing to do.

Well, that too. It definitely gave off "we have Stalker at home" vibes but Stalker games have infinitely more going on in them. I think the creator just has no idea what a demo is for, you get put into a small settlement with 6~10 houses and if you are lucky you will get a single randomly spawned enemy. I reloaded it four times to see if that was really what was supposed to happen and yes, it is. Baffling.

The Path into The Abyss is going for something similar to Road to Vostok (as a singleplayer tarkov) but actually it looks more in the style of a STALKER game, including having a story. But still aims to bring the simulation aspects in to the central experience. No demos as of yet though. I just feel like spreading the word because it looks promising to me, a game coming from Argentina. I have no idea if it will match Vostok's depth, but it looks to have depth in its own right.

Demo is really short; more proof of concept than anything; that being said it feels a lot like LN, which is good.

I did get caught in a chase pretty unfairly from jumping into a ladder instead of bonking into it face first, but I seem to recall stuff like that going back and maybe they'll smooth that over in release. Even if not, performance felt good and it got me back to playing pretty quick.

To me it looks more like STALKER than Tarkov but one thing I do know is that they look to emulate Tarkov's gunplay in some sense. All of the bullets are physical projectiles that originate from the weapons chamber rather than where your camera is pointed at. So individual bullets being fired is a thing. The only thing available is videos on their YouTube channel with devlogs. But all of the ones I've watched made it seem very interesting.

Lads I'm starting to wonder if maybe the problem isn't the next fest, it's me.

Maybe I've just tapped out of enthusiasm for games, it feels like the same 400 things over and over and over. Just like how books are the same 400 story arcs over and over and over.

Maybe I'm becoming old and boring, BUT the most played demo of the fest is a game from 1999 with a new coat of paint exactly.

Are there any GENUINELY NEW ideas this fest? I haven't seen them.

Supposedly. Dev is severely autistic and does a full rework of the game every few months, adds new mechanics, and then releases an updated version of the demo. He recently added DMMM kicking. According to the last dev log, he's actually getting close to a real release.

Tony Hawk and Jet Set Radio is a very weird comparison
THPS is a score attack game focused on doing tricks in sandbox levels
JSR is a score attack game focused on completing level objectives within a time limit to get a good rank with those objectives being about spraying graffiti on something
JSRF does the open world thing but it just took out the score attack stuff and just made it a generic complete missions by spraying graffiti on something or racing someone or winning some minigame

JSR isn't a trick focused game whatsoever like THPS, SSX is a much better comparison to THPS since both of them are designed purely about doing tricks. The tricks in JSR are an afterthought and not the main focus of either game

I've been working on a game for the past year, but didn't make it in time for this next fest. The issue is I'm using some AI generated backgrounds as placeholders and haven't found an artist to commission them at a reasonable rate. I've got about 50 backgrounds, but artists are demanding $600-$1200 per background. I don't have a spare 50k lying around just to commission backgrounds.

The rest of the game is hand drawn art, but I really don't want the 'Contains AI content' tag on my steam page.

What should I do? Just go fuck it and release with the AI backgrounds or keep hunting for a reasonable artist rate?

https://store.steampowered.com/app/4046520/Mad_King_Redemption_Demo/

I love beat 'em ups and this is a disappointment. Unresponsive and sluggish combat, the same three enemies copied and pasted over and over again, movement is very slow (even after a few meta progression speed upgrades) and honestly there isn't much strategy. You can die instantly from pretty much anything, most of which will be simply falling into the acid pits everywhere because there is a lot of platforming required for this type of game and all of it is instant death if you miss a jump. I got to the first boss, the necromancer and he has one attack and just summons wave after wave of the same three enemies you have been fighting already. Meta progression is the "Damage +5%, Speed +5%" variety. I've seen enough. The game has a strangely high amount of loading time for a simple game and this is with an i7 14300 / 4070 setup...

Atmosphere is 10/10 in this demo, especially when night falls. Night was genuinely creepy in the same way that Lecarde Chronicles games or Chronicles of the Wolf has that unsettling edge to them (IYKYK). Other than that, the combat, movement and exploration is slow and you can only play the awkward archer class in the demo which I assume gets easier to play as you level up but since the demo is so short you don't get a chance to do this. Based on what you can play this game will be a slow burn, but that isn't always a bad thing. I hope the night ambience actually has a payoff because it was the highlight of the game for aesthetic alone.

5/10 - It has some potential, but the demo is very restrictive and short. The base gameplay needs to be sped up a lot as this felt like more of a grinding 2D RPG than a metroidvania and basic enemies were taking 10+ hits to die at level 1 and still taking 7+ at level 2. Each screen was simply too big for the characters slow movement.

Tried out Birdcage. Don't really play shmups much but it's pretty fun from what's there. Swinging a sword around is neat, but I found it pretty tricky to use to defensively while also keeping track of all the projectiles and my own positioning, was pretty easy to get overwhelmed, though I hardly play games in this genre so that's probably just a me problem, maybe someone who plays shmups a lot won't have any trouble picking it up.
Pretty fun regardless, will keep an eye on it.

The only games worth playing Demos for if you have a good PC and hate asset flips and low effort AI Games.

Stand-Outs

https://store.steampowered.com/app/2830030/MOTORSLICE/

Prince Of Persia, Mirrors Edge and Hypertrance.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/2464280/Tormented_Souls_2/

Resident Evil and Silent Hill oldschool gameplay but more evolved.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/3790860/Placid_Plastic_Deck__A_Quiet_Quest_Demo/

A fun little Card Game that has 3D Gameplay and odd cutscenes that are not just Pixel only. Very interesting story.

Great Shmups.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/2618150/BIRDCAGE_Dryad_Ecophene_Module_Object/

https://store.steampowered.com/app/3941820/Revolgear_Zero/

A Starfox-Death-Revolver Like

https://store.steampowered.com/app/2984030/Death_In_Abyss_Demo/#app_reviews_hash

Solid Action Games

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1820000/Homura_Hime/

https://store.steampowered.com/app/2991310/Eternal_Palace_Sakura/

I will say with Eternal Sakura even if it is a Rogue but it's interesting in the sense that even if it's rough around the edges it's much better than where it was a year ago. It will definitely improve greatly from here forward.

Ecchi Game.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/3340680/LoveR_Kiss_Endless_Memories/ Whenever this Demo releases.

Also do not forget to leave feedback on forums for these games. Help these games succeed so we can make the industry into what we want it to be.

Ah yeah I know about Lilac 0, played that during the previous fest, that wasn't bad either, though not really my cup of tea so I didn't follow it. Don't know if I'd say it's similar though, the sword dash thing was more of a movement ability with a fairly generous width for projectile deleting, compared to Birdcage where you have to hold it out in front of you and swing it to remove blue projectiles.

And a remake of what technically started it all. Before Dusk popularised the revival

Wrack may or may not have aged well. But the point here was to try and improve it I guess.

I know it's subjective, but come on the amount of shit and AI and crap in this thread and the previous has been awful lol. The whole thing about Resident Evil and Silent Hill back in the old days was about solving Puzzles, having less bullets and ammo and surviving, it also had scary atmosphere with Zombies(Resident Evil) or Psychological Terror(Silent Hill) people just miss those aspects of those games because nowadays Zombies do not exist, and there is hardly any real scary games with Spiders or weird creatures based on a persons fears.
>>
Is there like a game you can buy off the unity or unreal shop that people use to make these shop simulators? There's so fucking many of them and outside of models and textures they look exactly the same.
>>
>>723212598
Also I forgot to mention, what seperates a good one from a bad is those who understand the puzzle solving aspects and the fear of wandering around and trying to survive very well. Puzzles are not too hard, but just enough to make you think it over a few times before you are like "I got it!"

Death in Abyss is a kind of odd one. Movement is snappy and quick, and the speed the heat metre cools down lets you be pretty mobile in short bursts. Only letdown is that the enemies are kind of bland, can't really tell if the game wants me to endlessly kite them (which is boring) or take advantage of the cooldown rate to engage in close-medium distance with lots of dodging (which works up until enemies spawn behind you). Worth a try, but personally I'm not into it

having played slots and daggers, the balance is really fucky with some weapons being downright run killers since late stage boss's have so much hp and can kill you quick, also didn't like how greedy with chips it became, I think a full run you can get like 6-7 per enemy but upgrades jump from 50 to 150

Tried Strategos. It's more a cross between total war and field of glory 2 than merely total war but a bit different. It was a little clunky for me controls wise but I think it has potential depending on the price point.
