>Skate Story
I'm a bit disappointed by this. The controls are Tony Hawk but simplier and you don't free-skate it (sort of) the demo is a story mode of the first chapter and completed in like 45 mins to an hour.

It's not terrible, but after how long it took Devolver to announce and release, I'm a bit disappointed.

>Ground Zero
Not a bad Biohazard clone (it's not a Parasite Eve unless later in the demo we get Parasite Energies/spells to play around with), but the lack of D-pad controls for tank-style controls is PAINFUL and it's baffling the Koreans didn't copy that control scheme if they were offering tank-controls.

Also makes my GPU go hot which seems insane for a PSX styled graphic art-style.

I'll probably pick it up for cheap if they patch in a D-pad control option for tank style classic Biohazard, otherwise I'll probably skip it.

Lighting of the level seems very flat and drab, but in honesty the level design is boring too. The music is good and the monsters were slightly cool.

Menace is good if you're a tactics nerd. Platoon-scale missions, with a campaign layer for the full game. Customize squad size, equipment, leadership, vehicles. Modern + limited scifi weaponry: space AK's and G3's, and lascannon mounted on BTR's.

Very cool.

I played a demo from last year and it was just alright. Guns feel good to use but the enemies don't feel very smart. The trading shops weren't well balanced, just picking up the guns from killed enemies gives you 10x the money than looting random trash from the buildings in the game. Also the bolt action rifle was also better than 90% of the other guns for most of the game, since it's the only gun with an easily attainable scope

I dont know why its in nextfest (publicity obviously). If you go to the actual store page you can just opt in to the full playtest, the demo seems to be constrained with 4gb dl instead of an 8gb one. It is a pretty fire game. Way more challenging than it looks and the simulation aspect is too zzzz for me though. I was hoping for more handcrafted tracks, but it seems almost entirely proc-gen so far

It's already out but Symphony of War also uses a squad customization system in the vein of Ogre Battle, but instead of OB64 or UO where the squads move in real time on a map it's strictly turn-based on a grid. Combat sprites are great and you can romance some of the party members if you want.

Only had time for two demos so far

>Ground Zero

Classic Resident Evil fixed camera style game. Really enjoyed this, put a little over 4hrs into the demo with all my replays. Needs Dpad movement of course, quite a few people on the Steam forums have reported wanted Dpad movement with replies from the dev who is seemingly listening. Really looking forward to the full game, so many of these survival horror games are doing a Silent Hill thing, very few are doing classic Resident Evil which I prefer

>Of Ash and Steel
Slavjank through and trough. You either love these kinda games or think they are broken games for brain dead people. I happen to love them. This one seems really good, dunno about the survival aspect of the game, wasn't an issue in the demo on medium but I can see it maybe becoming an issue later on. Spent a lot of time in this demo and it brings me right back to Piranha Bytes, Spiders, Spellbound, and JoWood kinda games that we don't really get anymore.

>>
>Million Depth
It was good, I tend to like multitasking combat and enjoyed crafting my deathblock. Only issue is that enemies are a tad tanky and for some reason having 3 spikes and a sword didn't made the damage go up considerable compared to 2 spikes, maybe the enemies get stronger faster than I thought? In any case is a pretty game and the setting is interesting.

>Ash & Adam's Existential Thread
Tower defence, drop in a favela and break everything for materials to build buildings with effects and recruit dudes. Kinda fun, sometimes it gets boring to just stand around and shooting building but you do have items to go for an offensive and break the enemy towers without needing to build your way towards it, using nature bombs or hit and run tactics with dynamite. it was alright this game.

>Jackal
Is a 3d hotline miami, less fast and lethal I think. I haven't played Hotline Miami, I should already. anyway, it was fun and maybe the story is nice? don't even know what it was about beside egyptian god tagging along for some reason. there are spells, madness is way more useful than teleport. maybe is worth to check out if you like hotline miami although is evident that this is vastly inferior from simple looking at it.

>Lumine Arise
Stack blocks in a pretty background and music, I think I like other tetris. I wasn't too interested when playing this one.

>Homura Hime
It was fun and responsive, the boss thankfully possed some challenge compared to the normal enemies, not that they are passive but they drop the most basic of basics.I don't know what to think of the shmup part, I did like Furi though. Skipped the whole story couse's I didn't feel like reading. I hope they improve the sound design of the game, I almost felt like I was playing it mute.

The OG VS is kinda shit shovelware so maybe not the worst thing. I wonder what the best one is? I largely have avoided them (I grabbed the deeprock one and was underwhelmed by the lack of updates) so maybe picking one up from a desperate indie dev would be cool. I always dislike that they didnt start adding abilities/skills/spells that could be activated. Late game is always borderline afk once you get good which is not a good gameplay loop

Monsters are coming seems great but still too AFK and repetitive.

Mech warriors or armored core?
>>
>>723529000
eh, is it possible to make a good game like that? The controls are similar to flying in Planetside 2. So if you want to dogfight and fight infantry, you can play this game already and better.

G rebels had very forgiving hitboxes and seemed to lean towards arcade rather than sim. Its also INFURIATING that their are no pitch/roll controls, so you can go upside down using mouse, but then you're at the mercy of a slow auto-correct that gradually orients you upright. Its ass, put it in trash.
>>
>>723529819
Neither, it's more of a space combat game like Freespace with a mech theme- you get a shield and sword for close combat and lose speed and momentum very quickly if you're not thrusting, which makes it feel pretty arcadey
>>

I tried out Starsand Island a little and like it a lot so far. It feels kinda like a Stardew with Genshin (or modern Pokemon?) graphics which I like a lot. Characters are cute. Its still a bit rudimentary and the island is too small but I see the vision and want more from it.

Mechanically it reminds me more of Story of Seasons but with more goofy Rune Factory characters if that makes sense. The people ive met in town are a bit more stereotypical like RF ones but I prefer that. The game could run a bit better but I am playing on a toaster so I shouldnt complain.

I liked Industria 2. So much so I discovered I had Industria 1 already (Probably Humble Bundle) and gave it a try. Vastly different games. 1 was fairly bland with a neat, if thin, story. 2 feels like what a first person Resident Evil would have been if 4's action hadn't taken over the series.

Slightly less hyped about 2 after playing 1, but still some hype.

I don't think Virgil really had much personality. He was just Dante's tour guide from Inferno to Purgatorio because he was a virtuous pagan and couldn't make it to Paradiso no matter how moral he was because he wasn't a baptized Catholic.

He also was there to stop Dante from spazzing out and attacking some of the bad people like a monk whose face was cemented in the ground in Purgatory that Dante started stomping on because he was such a sinner.

At this point, that's unfeasible for many reasons. All programmers nowadays use AI to program and assist in asset creation.
Who draws the line on what is considered an AI asset? Honestly, intellectual property management when comes to training generative models has been out of control for a while now. Almost no source material can be reverse-searched and the legislation on this matter is limited.

Islands of the Caliph isn’t AI-made. “Slop” usually refers to mass-produced, lowest-common-denominator garbage — the thousandth asset-flip or roguelite deckbuilder. This isn’t that. So what’s your actual argument? You said nothing besides “it looks bad.”

Your complaint about “text walls” also makes no sense. A list is faster to write, easier to search, and at least as informative as some cropped image of game banners.
Needing flashy image sloppa to pay attention, while (incorrectly) bitching about “slop” is rich as well.

I liked these ones enough to wishlist.
>Kats Trigger
Is a set piece based 2d action game where you basically play as electric anime batman avenging his family and helping a big titty gyaru runaway.

>Kotama
>Tia Weird Hunter
Both interesting "metroidvania" type games, Tia particularly has a good artstyle and music.

>Neffy
>Opus
Escort the cute girl type of games, the former is more puzzle based and the latter narrative focused.

>Yuki
Visually appealing tank controls style horror game, great soundtrack and UI. None of the settings I changed stuck so it's blurry, but you can lower or raise the pixelation too.

>Funky Heart
Gimmicky 3D platformer built around bunny hopping and freezing platforms in place. Pleasing visuals and likeable characters so far in the demo, but I suck at platformers.

>Maid of Salvation
Top down action game by the guys who did HunterX, so I'm hoping it winds up as fun as that game did with lots of varied weaponry/builds.

>Anima: Gate of Memories
Cheating because I already played the originals, but I don't care since it fixes the major annoyances too. A solid action game based on a tabletop game's lore, filled with soul and a cringe plotline played straight to the point that it feels earnest.

I like the full freedom of movement and aiming, having to figure out where enemies are relative to you is great, the dialogue that went through Google Translate circa 2008 is a thing of wonder, the various sound effects are pleasing, overall, I do like it, though it is very obviously something made by a solo dev who is reaching a bit further than he can manage. Yeah. Any game that doesn't have any effort put into its UI is going to suck. If you see any default fonts or it just puts the UI on some translucent boxes, then you can safely ignore the game.
>>
>>723542619
For me, it's the use of AI or machine translations, since I can tell from the menu itself when a term is terribly localized or absurdly transliterated in my mother language
If a developer relegates something as important as language to an AI without any human localization effort, that already speaks poorly of the game.

That's because a number of runes can translate to multiple words, for example 开/关 can translate to either on/off and open/close
>请你开灯
>Please turn on the lights
>请你开门
>Please open the door
In another common example, quality settings are often 低/中/高 for low/medium/high, but you might get something like low/middle/tall instead due to a lack in context for the MTL.

It will die like KarmaZoo did, as these types of indie projects that rely on multiple players to work only have an initial boost that rarely lasts beyond the first two months. Unfortunately, we'll only see its full potential in this very festival environment like a free experience

The only way to succeed with an online indie today is making a friendship-slop, as they are streamer bait, a typing BR isn't interesting to the average streamer.
>>
>>723543762
That's why human localizers are necessary and valuable workers, since machines, no matter how intelligent they've become, or how much they save you the burdensome, they are incapable of understanding the context, they cloud over when it comes to discerning if a translation or interpretation is appropriate in a completely different culture

Well, it's very possible to use a general-purpose model like ChatGPT or Gemini and achieve sentence-by-sentence localization if you know how to give them a specific and detailed input, but since solo devs are just stubborn and lazy, they think it's better to carry a bunch of crappy translations than a only good readable one
If you don't have the money to pay for a localizer, stick to English, or stick to Chinese if you don't even know the common global language, which will limit the product to your own very demographic.

Slot machine roguelite (in the sense that you play in runs and there's a shop after every enemy).

To think that at the first Steam Game Festival where the doors opened to any participant, the number was 900, then it stabilized at 300/400/500 with stricter rules of eligibility, norms like the "One fest per game" was applied, and the growth has only been exponential with the arrival of the Chinks and AI
>>
>>723549804
Yeah the meta progression grind is ridiculously bad for example
>average run with starting deck is 25 chips
>25 then 50 then 75 chips for 10 20 30% regen per turn (ridiculously powerful)
>250 then ? chips for a 4th slot (also extremely powerful)

It would be a good game if it were more about the choices you make in the shop a la balatro instead of mostly the meta progression
>>
>>723550463
>norms like the "One fest per game" was applied,
We've already had multiple examples every fest about how this rule gets flaunted each time. Chinks were also already uploading their slop before the fest and all that changed is that some of them bothered doing shitty MTLs so they appeared in your feed.

The Path into the Abyss is something you should add to your Wishlist if you want a stalker-like. But it will be a while before that's finished and it's not featured at Next Fest. Until then the next closest thing is Project Silverfish. Or there's a knock off co-op survival game that is STALKER themed called Misery, which happens to have a demo on this festival. But it's not stalker, it's really lethal company. I ain't recommending it but if you want some cheap knock off maybe you'll get some joy out of the demo.

I'll need to spend all day tomorrow skimming through all prior threads to see if I can find something at Next Fest that interested me. any good turn BASED games?
>>
>>723558045
I mean in both cases its the devs fault to be honest.
His first game is a multiplayer based anime game, something you're realsitically not going to make any headway into unless a streamer makes your game viral (which its not good looking enough for) or you advertise a lot (which a solo dev both likely can't afford. And as a japanese he's either machine translating his posts or has a very poor grasp of english, so he can't really just spam streamers and hope someone latches on as easily as a western dev can)
Second game is much better looking character wise, but the actual stage you fight on is literally just a circle, there's either no music or its so forgettable I already forgot and he's trying to break into the 1 v 1 fighting circle with his niche arena fighter without an actual properly designed arena, a genre that's EVEN HARDER to break into than his last one

He's apparenty planning a solo mode for this one, but realistically, if he wanted success, he should have focussed on that mode first and foremost and then tried messaging streamers even with his broken english, since roguelites specifically (ie the mode he plans to make) have a good few dedicated streamers with large audiences who will try more or less anything

The character designs are likely still too niche (read; not coomer or waifu bait) for massive success, but he could have realistically done much better doing that

tldr; he keeps making genres he realistically has 0 chance of making an impact in
>>

I feel like I just did not understand the combat system for this one, it can't just be spamming RT right? I did play azure striker gunvolt but that was years ago, like 2016 or something, the system did feel familiar with just holding a button and automatically shocking things, but then again I didn't get the S+ ranks in that game either looking at my achievments, just a no damage one

I feel like I'm clearly missing something with this system, there must be some nuance to it that I'm not quite understanding, the art was great for what it's worth

I'm probably going to end up playing 40+ demos at this rate so I'll just drop my currently-running Top 10:
>10. Lumines Arise
I fucking love Lumines and this is more of that. Homura Hime would be here if it had even one original/novel idea.
>BANDIT
Auto-scrolling belt-scrolling shooter with shockingly deep, layered mechanics for how simple it is.
>MENACE
Maybe too high IQ for me but I do really like how granular your unit customization gets and the Suppression mechanic.
>THRASHER
Very much feels like a new game from the THUMPER guy, and a game built first for VR, but the mechanics have a ton of potential.
>Tears of Metal
The combat and squad building/commanding have the bare minimum of depth and feel really good to do. I wish this was level-based and not a roguelite but I enjoyed running it until I beat the boss anyway.
>The Fable: Manga Build Roguelite
Another one I wish wasn't a roguelite but the core combat concept is absolutely genius (reminds me of the koma system in JUS + Fights in Tight Spaces) and I feel that this must be awesome fanservice if you've read the manga.
>Bottom-Up Beatdown: Hostile Takeover
One of the best single-plane beat-em-ups I've ever played despite flat spritework; enemies are fast and aggressive enough to make your abilities feel required.
>Kats Trigger
Give this a good OST and better pacing in some of the (edgekino) cutscenes and this is an absolute winner. I love how fluid it all feels whether you try to engage with the stealth or just slaughter everything.
>Majogami
Best new IP out of Inti in forever. Love the mix of 2D assets and low-poly, and the core mechanic is a smart way to incorporate Zandatsu in 2D. Also the plant boss has a FAT ass holy fuck.
>Myths Are 100% True
Pretty much perfect action platformer design where two simple mechanics are pushed by levels and enemies, wrapped in a 00s Newgrounds vibe.
>>
>>723560615
You're meant to position yourself to get the directional slash the enemy is weak to, but the demo barely has much of that because it's early game. I assume when most enemies have that and you need to either constantly adjust or risk charging the triple slash it'll be more engaging. The bosses do a good job at making you think about it. I also like how your base form is very limited in terms of mobility and you need to build up to different tiers of transformation that have different movement/attack options.

>>
>>723563494
I found the blue guy's final form was stronger without even pressing RT much since dashing through enemies counted as a horizontal slash and his buzzsaw jump attack was safer to approach things with if you didn't need to chain anything for height.

Here are some time management tips.

1. Sort them into games you are serious about and think look like something actually worth buying and games that look like fun demos but likely not a game that is worth going through the trouble of buying the full version of. Prioritize the former.

2. Set aside turn based games for when you don't have both hands available, such as when eating.

3. Take a break from social media. If something as important as WWIII were to happen, you'll likely hear about it here anyway.

This is what killed it for me even if I still wishlisted it hoping for fixes. The game feels half-finished mechanically, as if the controls were checklisted to work without seeing how they felt in play. Very floaty movement yet he comes to a complete stop instantly. When I think about a certain other sprite based slasher it feels worse. When I think about how the sprite artist is perfectly capable and willing to show realistic weight and movement yet the programmer hasn't been able to translate that feeling into gameplay it feels terrible moreso. Indies d-deserve a chance even if they stumble, it's w-what I would want.

>>723572320
I tried this but the jumps felt really awkward and for a game so Smash-inspired there wasn't any defensive mobility mechanic. Also while the right stick attacks like I expected it to it doesn't seem to be mapped to the same directions as manually attacking for some weird reason. Maybe it's just something you get used to but after half an hour trying all four characters nothing felt quite right. I liked the knight the most, then the boxhead (mostly for the combo you can do if you attack after catching the sword throw).

>>723514513
Tried Ashen Vow and it seems promising but it's extremely rough and needs a ton of polish. The script also feels like the dev just wrote regular sentences and then ran them through some ye olde English generator. Release date is still 2026 so I hope they improve the game as much as they can.

Ground Zero is about the only modern game to really nail that classic RE feeling, so many go for Silent Hill vibe it's refreshing to get a basic RE style game.

They gotta tweak the enemies though, way to easy as it is. Animations in general need work

I see, that's pretty huge then, I'll wait for the full release since I don't want to repeat stuff

I think the next fest version was pretty cool and clever of them, basically a vertical slice of the game to get a feel for it, and you immediately jump into it too

I've been trying some other demos and they really get bogged down into the story and/or introductory stuff, like sure that's cool and all if I actually bought the game, but for this event I think quickly getting right into things is the right idea, plus they included the bigger demo too for those that ended up very interested in it
>>
>>723578610
>I don't want to repeat stuff
The saves carry over to the full game, according to the demo's store page.
>>
I surpisingly had a lot of fun playing Terraformental
It's a text game, UI is very similar to tons of incremental games.
It's actually a survival game with very limited resources in a sci-fi setting.
A lot of progress are carried over from one attempt to the next (time loop mechanic).
What is annoying that I often have to wait 1-3 minutes while the action is executed. Probably played best as a background to shitposting.

Right now my game loops is
>prepare for expedition
>embark
>do some exploration while my water/fuel is running out
>die
>explore some other shit, while using knowledge from previous loop

If all you want is "vibes" it has that, despite the modernized features. Ground Zero looks a little like RE3, but that's it.

>But, Ground Zero really nails the gameplay flow of classic RE more so them Echoes of the Living
No way. If you changed some names in EotL you could convince people that it's an official Gamecube era RE game. It's 100% on point. Everything from characters to visuals to level design to enemies to key hunting is exactly like REmake and RE0.

Alabaster Dawn isn't a next fest demo but it is one of the greatest games I've ever played. I wanted to like CrossCode but binding melee and ranged to the same input was asinine. This corrects this insane mistake and everything else about the game is significantly improved. I just hope the puzzles are far more clever later in the game.

> Ash and Steel comes out in a couple weeks.
It's also a full release rather than early access, if any anons like gothic or slav jank like Elex please give the demo a chance, game open up after you finish the camp main quest (tutorial) and these russian retards have 0 money for marketing

Yeah the excessive tutorials are grating, but once you get out into the woods it opens up and there's a lot to find. Sad that there aren't the cool combat mechanics that Sword Hero has, but the exploring and the climbing is nice.

One of the quirks of YGGDRA REFRAIN is that the translation sometimes gets the names mixed up. Still, I'd rather have that than a malicious "localization".

Don't know if it's part of the fest but The Last Caretaker was a decent open world survival craftlike about sailing on a boat

I figured it out. Both of the conditions for the hButton UI are set to false as I assume a failsafe. Set the second one to true and you're home free if you hit the weird conditions.

I am stuck in a tutorial/hub area.

Will that Star Trek Voyager game have voice acting or can they not afford it?

Just start a game with the altar in the middle? I really didn't have any problem so maybe you missed going to the armory and other thing as part of the tutorial

Actually, it looks like they updated the demo and R18 patch so that they don't have sex in it anymore. They removed the code that allows you to do it and the assets aren't there anymore. I wonder if it's because of the talk here or because other people also figured it out since it's really not hard to crack. I'd just recommend waiting for and buying the full game at this point. Give your lolibros your money.

Dogenstein isn't as low effort as I was expecting but still bad. The creator is also really happy to shove as much dialogue and one-liners in there even though he's using AI voices that sound about as good as Microsoft Sam.

I see it. I joined in. It's not a bad game but it's not a Painkiller game just because it has the stakes and the blades melee gun.
Also the characters are shit. The moustache guy is ok, the hooded one meh, the 'women', I see that nobody plays them.
It's not bad optimized either, they spent a lot of money on this.
Shame it doesn't seem to have a trad single player.

oh, is that why it can be on steam? I was wondering about that.

After several weeks now. And the Next Fest approaching its end.

it could not be more different from ultrakill gameplay
its like ultrakill if the creator was indian and his head was hit by a full speed train so hard that he forgot all the good ideas for the shooting mechanics

It's not bad, but it's not good either. I appreciated the production value since I'd played a hundred indie game demos prior, but the gameplay itself was very unengaging. The game's going to die faster than Back 4 Blood, but slower than FBC Firebreak.

Holy fuck. Past Next Fests were nowhere near this bad for sexual content games.
