The strategy element is good if you set restrictions for yourself like not allowing ally deaths but this is also a series where you can just grind until you're absurdly over-powered. PS2-era NIS was just a different company and they had a certain style that gradually became lost over the years. I still love all the games but I don't really play them for the story, that's all. Like 5 was designed for a wider audience and has the most cliche cookie cutter shounen story known to man but it's still a good game if you're just playing it for the game-play. The games don't really play like FFT or FE at all. You have a player phase and enemy phase where each side performs all it's actions at once. You've also got lift/throw and geo symbol mechanics which are some of Disgaea's more unique mechanics. Liking FFT and FE won't guarantee you like Disgaea but it's possible to like more than one thing. I like both Disgaea and FFT but I don't care about the FE series whatsoever.

Disgaea's appeal over other games in the genre is that it has a focus on broad ways to increase your characters strength. As the game progresses you get more and more ways to make a character strong and you can pick and choose what you want. Leveling your item? Go for it. Leveling your characters specialisations? Got it. Reincarnating for better growth and stats? Sure. Evilities (passives) that play to that units strengths? Yep.During the main story this is a fairly gradual escalation, that ends with units feeling pretty unique to each other thanks to their individual gimmicks. >>724733303>>724734036newfag here who started the series a couple months ago after marathonning a bunch of srpg's this year (Triangle Strategy and 10 Fire Emblem games) and was already a longtime fan of FFT/FFTAi played the stories only of Disgaea 1 and 2 and just finished the story of 5 and started the postgame D1 and D2 were both worth playing for the story alone imo, D1 much more at least. both were about 20-25 hours or so each. disgaea 5 story took me 60 hours. the grind doesn't start until the postgame either. i'd just play the story of D1 which is $3 on Steam atm and see how you like the gameplayit's really quite different from FE for many reasons but the big difference for me that was actually a great change of pace after playing 10 FE's back to back is just how "loose" the combat feels. long range attacks, crazy abilities, monster taming, typical HP/MP and spell types, throwing (which adds a lot more to the game than it seems like), the sheer amount of customization available to you, no permadeath so you can sacrifice teammates and such, etc. FE is just very rigid in comparison, attacks from 1-2 spaces only, permadeath, and it just feels much more samey. that's not a knock against it at all, i love FE combat, but going to Disgaea after so many was very refreshingthe story, characters, and humor in D1 just made it a treat to play and it really helped me ease into the metric fuckton of mechanics 5 throws at you. after 65 hours of D5 i'm still lost on most of the mechanics

I picked up Disgaea 2 and I'm enjoying it (first Disgaea game) but I'm at 2-4 right now (Sealed Room) and I want to grind up some of my party members that are still level 1.-How do I get them better equipment outside of the shop? The original Disgaea is still the best in so many ways, and all the sequels just fucked it up more and more (they only changed the gameplay to be easier and more grind focused; D1 wasn't even grind focused, it was just optionally possible - you could finish the game easily at level ~100 and even most postgame content at level ~1000).
