Smash Bros. 64 (Introduced the game, possibly the first platform fighter in the genre?) That I am aware of.

Melee significantly improved the graphics, expanded the roster, and added new content like the Home Run Contest.

Brawl added the first "true" story mode, with an actual story and cutscenes, and side-scroller styled levels with boss fights at the end of each zone. Brawl also added stage builder. Also added Classics demos and tripping (bad addition). And pokemon types. Lol.

Smash 4 expanded the roster, and removed story mode.

Side rant: In fact now that I think about it Shadow in Smash makes a lot of sense from a “Nintendo history” standpoint.

Remember, Sonic Adventure 2 was one of the last, if not THE last, big first-party title for the Dreamcast, Sega's swansong for console manufacturing. Then, a few months later, SA2 Battle hits the Nintendo Gamecube. In other words,
Shadow the Hedgehog represents the exact moment in time when Sega went from Nintendo's primary rival to Nintendo's partner as a third-party game developer. It's not too far off from how Bayonetta became a Nintendo franchise when you think about it.

Plus, you know, Sonic Movie 3 doing really well also helps.

Star Fox suffers from a similar thing that F-Zero does. Both games are, for whatever reason, conceived of as tech demo series first, and only exist to showcase new tech.

Sonic easily. As you said, SA2 was the last big Dreamcast game, and then a year later it's on the Cube, where it's ironically the first "big" platformer for that system on account of Mario Sunshine not being out for another 8 months. Sonic still had some relevancy and seeing him on a rival console made everyone do a double take (I did).

Halo meanwhile has been a laughing stock since Halo 4, plus it's been on PC since 2003. Coupled with Bungie ditching Microsoft to make Destiny slop for Snoy, and seeing Halo on a non-microsoft console isn't that shocking.

It made more sense for it to show up on a Japanese console than Microsoft but I think a lot of folks were expecting it to come to PS2. Fusion was GBA, in 2002, one year after Melee and basically timed for Prime's release on Gamecube.

[Japan Time] was ludokino. Some updates were duds, sure, but it was a fun basically daily look into a lot of aspects of the game. It was all updated by Sakurai himself effectively, so it was imparted with some unusual bits of humor here and there. "You must Recover!" is a classic Dojo shitpost. A lot of character reveals were done this way, actually.

The big problem with FE is that the characters were just too similar. I don't think there would have been the problem if instead of 4 or 5 Marths, we had a cavalry unit and a mage. Put in Seth and Lilina over Lucina and Corrin, and people would have been a lot happier. Hell, you could even make their alts different characters. Jagan can be Jagan, Seth, Marcus, and Fredrick.
People like Ike, because he's notably different. People don't like Chrom, because we already had Blue Marth. That was Marth.

Fire Emblem representation in Smash suffers from every new character having to be the MC and the MC of each game being a sword-wielding Lord. If Melee released two years later we could've gotten Hector or Lyn instead of Roy for diversity's sake, but realistically it would've just been Eliwood. I perfectly agree. Obviously an Adventure Mode for each character would be way too big in scope, but even just a handful of different paths or whatever would probably be enough to be entertaining. Adventure Mode was always a fun romp for me. I feel like the people complaining about it being "the same" are people who went through 25 times straight for every character.

Lucina and Chrom did not need to be characters at all. Them being costumes would have been better. I don't know what Nintendo or Sakurai were thinking on that one. Also don’t care if Awakening did numbers to the point of becoming a Nintendo Selects game. It was just dumb luck. Everybody loves Lyn yet she remains an Assist Trophy, yet Corrin got in before their game released worldwide and not everyone ended up liking it anyway. Roy got in too before his game even came out at all.


Celica would’ve been better than Chrom, repping a different game for a change and would be a Robin echo having the Pichu self damage gimmick when casting spells as a different take on Weapon Durability but she’d have no durability like in her game.
