>Be a, presumably, highly trained Galactic Federation soldier transported to planet Viewros
>The first thing you do, in your first moment of screentime, is crack a joke about how you're in a hopeless situation
No one in their right mind would actually do this
>"Haha, oh wow, I'm in such a hopeless situation right now :D"
If you were actually in a situation like that, you wouldn't be joking. You'd be scared. You definitely wouldn't be joking about how your situation "is hopeless" because that's potentially fatal self-demoralization in such a situation.
Like, if you were the sole survivor of a plane crash in an uncharted part of the Amazon jungle, you wouldn't be saying "Haha, this is so hopeless :D", with a smile and a wink like that.
Second, if you were a soldier, you wouldn't be acting like that. That is to say, if you were a well trained soldier, your training would kick in, and you would be acting on conditioned instinct to deal with the situation in the best way you could.
Third, if you were a soldier, you probably wouldn't be making jokes about working in a cubicle: because you probably wouldn't work in a cubicle.
These aren't the only problems, but I'll stop there.

If the Metroid Prime games are known for their immersion factor, and getting the player to believe in the game and its world for the time you spend with it - it's like every single thing about the first line of dialogue from Myles is designed to get you to stop believing in the setting and the world of Metroid Prime 4.

It doesn't really matter what they do with Myles or any of the other characters after this moment, this is such a betrayal of Metroid Prime's DNA it's already ruined whatever the rest of the experience is they're planning. There's no salvaging the rest of the game after this moment. The immersion factor has evaporated.
It's so bad it comes off like some kind of corporate sabotage.

If Myles is an Engineer, this should mean either one of two things.
Follow me here...

My dad is an Engineer. He works in an office, using CAD software to design mechanical parts.
My dad is not a soldier. If he had the job he has now, in the future, he would not be putting on power armor and fighting on the frontlines.
If Myles is supposed to be an "Engineer" in the sense that he works in an office like my dad, why is he wearing power armor and carrying a pistol?

Perhaps by "Engineer" the writers meant something like "Technician" or "Mechanic". This kind of thing happens in videogames sometimes. A mechanic, like, say, on an Air Force Base, probably wouldn't be working in a cubicle. He'd be in a hangar. Working with his hands.
If Myles is an "Engineer" in the sense that he fixes machinery, at his base or in the field, why is he cracking a joke about working in a cubicle?

On top of all of this
Does his joke imply that he was wearing his power armor in his cubicle "next to Phil" when he was transported to Viewros?
Every single thing about this one line of dialogue falls apart if you give it any amount of thought.
It's fucking insane how they managed to do that.

This should be the average level of intelligence. People *should* be smart enough to realize how fucking stupid this all is.

Sometimes people use levity to cope with stress and danger.
With that said, it needs to be written well. Terribly-written irony poisoning afflicts 90% of modern media.l and this is no exception.

Okay mr. smart guy "mil experience"
Would you, personally, ever crack a joke ... to yourself ... about your situation being hopeless, if you were stranded somewhere, alone, without communication?
Why would an Engineer be wearing power armor in his cubicle?

Give me a good answer to both those questions with all your wisdom and experience
>>
Why does Myles wear glasses under his helmet which also has glasses
>>
>>726007768
I laughed at first when I saw a guy blow himself up, so yes, it happens.
>Why would an Engineer be wearing power armor in his cubicle?
Firstly you assume he went straight from his cubicle to Viewros, this was most likely not the case, he was probably either in combat, or in a situation where combat was a risk, or he was working on vehicles, and a suit of armor that increases physical capabilities and protects with the sort of flexibility that they enable makes sense for working on vehicles, but even if he was at his cubicle for some reason it would make sense to wear combat armor in a potential combat situation, just for readiness.
When talking about the guy he hates it doesn't come off as if he is no longer literally sitting in a cubicle he's sharing with that guy and more that being here means he won't be having to deal with the guy he shares a cubicle with.
I get the feeling that nobody gets that this character is intentionally annoying, notice that the other characters don't have dialogue written like his, and his dialogue was most likely written by that lesbian who loved the idea of troon samus, whether that's good or not, who knows, he could have a great character arc, I doubt it but he could kind of get the hint that his way of speaking is grating.

>>726008696
that's most likely a secondary visor for his suit, but it's clearly for visual effect ot accentuate his role as a technician, just like that other guy who is also wearing a different suit than the standard power armor.

>>726009628
It's just visually there for his character, but it can probably be justified. You do get a set of contacts standard issue and when I served there was a subsidy for laser surgery, but there were still a lot of people who didn't want that, I knew 1 guy who had gone for it out of way more who decided to not get it, just because the option is there doesn't mean that a lot of people want this kind of invasive surgery to fix their vision.
If his visor corrected his vision for him then he would still need his lenses for when he isn't wearing his visor.
I'm just going to reiterate that the second visors are primarily for the look, but justifiable within universe, in case you aren't getting this part.

>>726009695
His dialogue is bad, but you're wrong, I know you're wrong because I have experience that says you're wrong, you made all kinds of retarded speculation that I knew you were dead wrong about initially, I'm not so much calling you out, I just know you're wrong, and at this point you aren't even arguing the point, you're just dancing around it like the retard you are.

Importantly, is the current gaming landscape even compatible with Metroid Prime game design?

It feels like an archaic game style, a relic, a bygone. Stopping gameplay and movement to scan something? Takes a second to scan and now you have to read? And everything in the room is scannable? And only some of it matters to your game progression? Slow tank movement with a lock on system?

It just feels like this is a game that should have been made and released 15 years ago when this style of gameplay was still relevant. The gameplay isn't bad for when the series first started, but at this point it is really behind the times.

It doesn't need to be brainrot hyperspeed zoomer attention grabbing. But the core mechanics are definitely too slow and things need to be brought into the current/next gen of game design for an exploration game like this.

Even when listening to the trailer (which I thought was good), everything just feels so underwhelming when you hear Samus' abilities. And it's not the problem of the marketing team. This is just a problem with the core design of the Prime games. You literally couldn't make it sound more interesting if you tried.

You have a very naive view of jarheads, they love cracking jokes at almost any time. The execution is dogshit MCU writing but the principle of laughing and comparing it to what they'd rather not be doing is extremely on point for them. Including bitching about white collar work which is way more productive than anything they're doing.

I accept your concession.
Jokes aside, you can't explain why this writing is good because it's bad writing.
I guess it's "Good writing" if the goal is to make a Marvel-esque sci-fi story where I can't take anything seriously....
But given that Metroid Prime's entire schtick was taking itself seriously enough to draw you into its setting and sell you on the idea that you're really there behind the visor on an alien planet, this is terrible writing.

>>
>>726014506

The intent of this character is to make Metroid Prime 4 appealing to room temperature IQ normies.
The only way to deem if this is good writing (in a narrow target) is to see if the game sells better because of it.
You can kind of see this game as Nintendo's last effort to make Metroid popular.

OP, you are autistic.
>>
>>726017148
Gallows humor would actually be funny.
This is a passive aggressive marvel quip.

Honestly it's so hard to write parody dialogue as this guy for shitposting since I hate that kind of dialogue, he is such an insufferably accurate microcosm of that style of speech that it's hard to top what's in Beyond.

Nintendo is going to beat Sony at their moviegame game.

Who is ready for Super Mario Galaxy 3 with full voice-acting and a breathtaking narrative?

There is footage of Samus getting hit with the energy wave from the artifact and falling to the floor, then waking up on Viewros.
So yes it does suggest he could have been at a cubicle

I feel like the game's been in development so long that it was something that made sense at the time. Like Retro restarted it in 2019 when shit like the MCU and that kind of humor was at it's peak, he's probably a remnant of that. I feel like there's less patience for this type of thing these days but it was too late to remove him.
>>
>>726018068
No, Nintendo is going to make a cinematic 3D Mario game.
I sense it.
>>
>>726018346
There would have been a bigger uproar about this shit in 2019.
Also arguably that was way past the point where people were tired of Marvel shittery

You were unable to see why this character was created in the first place and recognize the patterns and solve it's puzzle.
You are interacting with this game as if Metroid was ever any high to reach in the department of storytelling or even world building.
Faulty logic from a misguided sense of what is important and the intent behind an action. You projected what you value into what Nintendo wants from ROI with this game.
You are slightly above average IQ. That is all.

>You were unable to see why this character was created in the first place and recognize the patterns and solve it's puzzle.
No, I can see exactly why he was created. That doesn't make those reasons good.
>You are interacting with this game as if Metroid was ever any high to reach in the department of storytelling or even world building.
Dialogue writing? There shouldn't be any dialogue in Metroid game.
Worldbuilding? You've never played the Prime games if you think they slouch when it comes to worldbuilding. There actually is quite a lot of writing when it comes to scan logs, and it's generally good.
>Faulty logic from a misguided sense of what is important and the intent behind an action.
(You)
>You projected what you value into what Nintendo wants from ROI with this game.
What I value is what the Prime games previously were.
>You are slightly above average IQ. That is all.
I am very high IQ, and frankly it's exhausting. Everything seems to trend towards stupidity these days.
There's no "red meat" for someone like me.

Dialogue is for the player, not between characters. It's called soulless. Bg3 is full of this. Could've been our game. Mp4, too, won't be our game.
>>
>>726018861
>Dialogue is for the player
That's a good way of putting it.
He's not even talking to Samus when he cracks that joke, he's literally talking to himself.

I don't even particularly care about how good the game is because I haven't bought any nintendo products since the wii nor do I intend to but for as bad as I expected it to be from the first reveal I didn't think it would be this bad.
Shallow open world slop design where you spend 5 minutes on the bike riding across an empty desert with nothing to break it up besides maybe some random combat encounter which fails to be interesting because they showed its brainless auto lock on shit just to make your way to one of probably dozens of shitty mini levels you need to hit before you're allowed to play a real level a la BOTW, that was expected.
Such abysmally dogshit tonally off putting writing that is directly reminiscent of typical AAA sloppa and modern REMEMBER TO PRESS BUTTON TO SAVE YOUR NPC ESCORT was not.
If nothing else I assumed that for their first party franchises that have a semblance of tone more serious than bing bing wahoo it would be kept on the level.

This guy was emblematic of everything wrong with modern metroid and they fucking doubled down on it.

The biggest problem in the game is that it isn't rendered in 4:3.
>>

The Switch did something to turn Nintendo fans into the most uncritical, loyalist fuckers. I've strongly suspected that Pokémon fans (who used to be confined to the portable sector) and general Nintendo console fans being merged under one system allowed the programming of the former to infect the latter, I only saw this degree of Nintendo dickeating in the Switch era become common after Pokefags waged their autistic sales jihad against critics of SwSh.
>>
>>726019112
the most I've seen of "defending him" are people saying "he sucks ass but isn't really enough to ruin the game, especailly when the rest looks so good"
and then people like >>726019315 calling this opinion a bingtendotrannyshill or whatever.

Bryyo in Prime 3 has an entire Planet of the Apes esque story about a war between a primitive caste and a scientific caste of the natives, which serves as the backdrop lore foundation for all the architecture you're seeing.

It's pretty ok writing and it's never brought up or expounded on any other way.

This is shitty in a very American way. I can totally see Nintendo demanding they target children and include a Navi character but they didn't need to go in this direction. Nintendo IP feel increasingly disneyfied which was always going to degrade them but capeshit dialog is teleporting to bottom of the barrel slop.
>>
>>726022268
Everything else aside the game's also ugly, weirdly flat lighting and playdough textures
