I'm trying to learn how to draw sprites for a visual novel. I'm rendering somewhat raw 3D models and kinda tracing them. The visual novel won't be erotic, but all the women will be hot and will wear super slutty clothes.

>>729575260This look bad, her head is way too big compared to the body and tracing 3D models make the characters look stiff as fuck. Also the face is unappealing. This might seem harsh, but it's only honest critique
>>729575242I was disappointed with this game. I bought it because the dev posted about it here from time to time, but there are very serious problems with the final product.First, the sound effects are extremely annoying. Then there's the level design, which is simply not good, without seeming to decide whether it wants to offer a traditional or kaizo experience, and failing at both, in my opinion. Finally, the bosses are just bad and unpleasant to face.

Bullet shadows now automatically resize based on the bullet radius
>>729576338Oh cool, guess you got that working. Why are some shadows darker though?
>>729576378The shadow transparency is determined by how far its vertical center is from the surface and by the material transparency I set, I haven't made the shadows uniform between all the objects (player, enemies, bullets) yet so some will be at a different heights and look different until I fix them (probably not this year)
At the tail end of the previous thread I had asked for advice on how to start game dev because when I look at the tutorials, it feels like I'm being handed a fish rather than being taught to fish. I don't think my idea is incredibly ambitious either, I seem to have problems learning how to learn. I've been told that I should break down my idea into its individual mechanics and learn how to do those, but when I look up tutorials it feels really unsatisfying. How's this tutorial for a starting off point? After googling it, I read that anything from Codemonkey is pretty good. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nGKd4yTP3M8

>>729576835i dont' want to give you a definitive answer, since i'm self-taught for the most part, so i don't think i'm qualified to advise you.but i will tell you that i learned a language very fast when i got a programming job in languages and frameworks that i didn't know. being under pressure really motivates you to actually learn shit, as opposed to just doing whatever stuff in your free timeideally you'd have some sort of person to tell you what to learn and how, and give you easy projects, i had a team leader at my work, but then you don't.
>>729576860There's something very dissatisfying about this composition.I think the font, text color and green frame are definitely negative points, but I can't put my finger on why it all lacks impact.Perhaps you should try getting more of the red in there?
>>729576914But that foesn't teach you anything about actually putting together a game in an engine. It just teaches you syntax.

>>729577043exactly
>>729575260a visual novel is not a game, it's not artisanry, it doesn't belong in this thread
>>729577225Fuck off retard
>>729577043it doesn't teach you syntax primarily. it primarily teaches you the basic concepts that make up all code, like variables, methods (functions), conditionals, arrays and loops. you need to learn these concepts in some language before you can do anything productive in a game engine. and since C# is the developer language in Unity, the most popular indie game engine (the games are indie, not the engine), it's what I know and what I always recommend.the important thing about learning programming is that you solve problems. every step should be a little puzzle you solve. you should never be listening or reading for more than a minute at a time. you should always be the one doing stuff. coding can only be learned by doing.knowing the word "syntax" does not confirm that you know how to code. I have to assume you don't, therefore I'm recommending learning to code as the first step.
>>729576986i appreciate that, but i'll still be working on visuals for a bit to get them, idk...better.I plan to stfu about my game for aa while and jut work. A major hurdle I had been dealing with for the continuation of my game was the fact that my main menu navigation system would simply not work with the new Input System. No matter how many times I attempted to assign the button in the next menu section to be highlighted, it simply would not highlight and cause the entire system to break. Come yesterday when I wasn't choking on phlegm and I decided to take another look: experimenting with the original Stabdalone Input Module that used the Input Manager and not the Input System, I found my menu worked flawlessly. While tinkering, I found a sneaky little option in the new UIInputModule: Deselect on Background Click. Unchecking that, as I would learn, freed me from that curse.I then went to sleep after that because of the tea I drank and now I have to get to work.
>>729582267>>729580720That's a cute MC. The gloss doesn't necessarily need to be reduced, you could apply a grunge texture as a specular map or something. Might not fit the aesthetic you're going for though. As overdone as it's become I think it needs some kind of ps1 crunch shader. That art style isn't done any favours by high resolutions.
>>729583168Oh and the glossy problem isn't even the blood, it's the heads on the monsters. That's what specifically looks bad.

I loved how in POE2 you could dash away and even use the shield with the press of a buttonI'm retarded and made the UI too much Diablo-like, so everyone thinks it's that genre. It's an MMO so combat is much slower and involves a lot of ability usage. Blocking is automatic if you're facing an enemy and have your weapons unsheathed. >>729586848>i'm just lurkingyou can't even do that right
>>729586363I'm just unlesrled of good approaches to designing what those health bars and attack damages could look like for a fairly balanced experience. I'm not allergic to cheese or clever strats breaking the game (for a single player experience) but before I get experimental with it I think I want a good foundation. My initial thoughts are to take enemies, common or bosses, and establish how long the fight SHOULD last through well executed basic attacks in an unga-bunga style. >ex.>1st boss should take 10 perfectly times hits>a perfectly timed basic attack should do ~2 damage early game>ergo make the boss's HP 20But then I'm more curious on designing common enemy HP and all enemy attack values. I can predict what the player's max HP at that time would look like, but through compounding efforts of traveling through a level, possibly carrying consumable health restoration, how much of that max HP should I expect the player to be at and therefor how reasonable would it be for enemy to do X damage normally? Should I do the flip of the boss and say>the player should be able to endure N number of hits before going down, so X= (predicted max HP)/N? This is, I'm sure, not boiler plate and everyone has their own methods of establishing number design, but like I said I'd like to play with something tried and true and then experiment from there.
>>729586374Maybe it spawns unbreakable blocks that the player can use to get extra bounces in. They're able to toggle it off and on. Some kind of limit would have to be set though.

>>729576551I started by banging my head against a wall. By which I mean I tried it and failed at many things, and kept trying anyway. I had zero experience of coding or modelling, just some general art skills so I could envision what I wanted pretty well.I was following tutorials, and yeah like you I felt I wasn't really learning how to do things in general, just learning to do the thing the tutorial was doing.Still, it's worth doing that. You do get a grasp of what's possible and what can work, especially if you have a strong sense of the direction you want to go.Well I kept banging my head against that wall, and eventually decided maybe I do need some more structured education. So I went to IT school and actually learned programming. This helped a lot, but I also only was able to get anywhere doing it because I had that strong vision of what I wanted to do. If that's an option for you I highly recommend it.Of course, it helps that in my country, school is basically free, and I lived on government money while doing it.
>>729576551I'm early in my learning. My plan is to follow turorials to learn common fuctions, good scripting practices, and general methods of achieving something as building blocks. I already have big ideas for what I want to work towards one day (Magnum Opus stuff) as well as some much smaller scale projects as intermediate steps between the tutorials and the ambitious plans. They are mostly clone game ideas so I can prove that ai'm capable of building things that have already been constructed to compare it to and then add a little unique spin on them. But before I learn to run I have to learn to QWOP, hence why I'm dickriding tutorials for the time being. When I get to the intermediate step is when I'll need to do a lot of learning on my own, searching the web for microsolutions and implimenting them with my own guard rails as opposed to someone's lesson plan.
>>729574531I'm doing ending slides, 10 slides in total, 2 variations eachBy the grace of Todd I'm gonna advertise that my game has 1000 different endings.
>>729576551>>729589136Also, game dev is a journey, and it is a long one. Don't worry too much if your early attempts at using tutorials aren't too satisfying. >>729588806I came up with how I want my numbers to work then picked an algorithm that works for it. Started with a rule of 10s for it: hitting a monster who has 10 defense with a standard attack and an attack stat of 10 does 10 damage, killing a 100 hp character in 10 hits. 10s all around. Nice and round and not too huge. Then it scales appropriately. If you increase all stats by X%, the damage also increase by X%. That way something 5 times bigger: with 500 hp, and defense of 50, they take 50 damage dying in 10 hits to something with 50 attack.Damage is always going up as you get stronger and importantly enemies and players scale predictably. It just seemed like the most logical method. Like its part of the metric system or some shit.

Through these nodes is how the characters can "see" each other and interact with each other. That one was like Valkyria Chronicles where you directly controlled your units and moved them like in a third person shooter.

Anyone doing a custom engine? What are the benefits of it?
>>729575896>guy on anime website doesn't know about different head sizes in stylized mediaAlways blows my mind when someone in deep in a topic still doesn't understand it
>>729602585https://store.steampowered.com/app/2443360/Zortch/this game has a custom engine. Check out the system requirements and you'll understand the advantage over any pre-made engine
Currently working on building an Event system in Godot for playing out sequences of triggers/animations for cutscenes. Little annoyed that Godot doesn't have much of an editor for helping me out with this shit, since I can't preview it in-editor while I'm adding each entry in sequence. Have to load up the program with a call to load a specific scene+event just to make sure actors are moving to the places they should, animations are not being cut short, etc. Might just start allowing Events to add empty objects to the scene, to grab positions from that I can tell Actors to walk to/look towards.
>>729602040The graphics are nice and crunchy

anons i feel like i'm not really cut out to make a whole working system that is a video game. i made some progress, but i encountered problem X. okay, i thought that i'd first create a debug class to help me debug things. in this class i'll spawn things without them needing to spawn by themselves on a random chancehowever, i built my game in such a way that every spawned thing has an "owner" - which is a class that spawned it. and the debug class isn't a spawner, so it can't be the ownerand that's not the first time suchh a thing happens. i honestly think i just can't design for shit.
>>729602863I honestly don't know how I'd arrange an Event/Cutscene manager as a 'tool', with the amount of shit they need to be capable of that may rely on shit being instantiated by something else (eg. the player/camera).
>>729574531Working on eyes
>Being unable to program>Being unable to make art assetsWhich is more devastating?
>>729603218my idea was (is) to have a cutscene_controller that takes care of the cutscene_camera and the cutscene_actor nodes. I won't use the same camera logic and player instance as during gameplay. Dunno if it's a good idea but keeping all that separated might be, we'll see
>>729602812Godot has a debug button to run and test one specific scene, but it doesn't load global singletons so it's not always useful. Throwing together your own debug menu is a good investment, especially if it can remember the last thing you tested and send you there with one button
>>729603680being unable to program, it's easier to learn since gamedev programming is pretty basic and you can use AI to help without anyone freaking out
Since last month(last time i posted) I released the techdemo sort of engine test I was working on and finally recompiled the executable as well as its libraries, meaning I have full control over the idtech4 engine and can reimplement everything as I need.Today I retooled the physics object grabbing function which was present in the codebase but tooled more towards quickly throwing projectiles. I think it was used in doom3 for parrying or something. What I have now is more akin to how grabbing works in source. I was going to write that I need to figure out a setting before I put any concrete work into possible gameplay loops but I realized how silly that reads. Progress posting can be so illuminating

Also makes it easier for me to tell where shit is since I put debug labels on everything in the editor that get removed on startup.>>729603692I wanted to do the thing where an event can trigger while still allowing player input. It's a 2d game gameplay-wise, but 3d presentation, so I want parts where I can just hijack the camera, and play out a sequence of events as deemed fit. I don't like hard handoffs between gameplay and cutscenes, I want them to transition between one another.>>729603750In that kind of test scenario, I guess the course of action would be making a dedicated scene scripted to load the bare minimums (eg. my autoloads, mandatory actors, etc), and then pull off what I need from there. That way I'm not polluting my main test environment while building things.

Godot user here. Is my scene editor really just going to look like a fucking mess of Area3D shapes in the end? Feeling like I'm using them for near everything that needs a script attached to it.- Triggers for objects, starting events, etc- Collision checks for non-physics driven objects- Rendering Zones (whatever the actual term is where you set the game to only activate/render the nodes/actors in the currently inhabited zone, plus any immediate neighbouring ones, so you don't have to sort/cull against everything in the entire scene)- Sound modulation changes (ambient music, reverb changes, etc)- Physics zones (Ground vs. slippery vs. water)- Camera stoppers- Invisible walls
>>729605685Sounds sick.>holy: dunnoMaybe it inspires terror in unholy creatures like Turn Undead? >>729606687Oh I am. A lot of the Area3Ds are just part of other scenes I'm instantiated, but in my main level scene where it's all composited together, it's a visual mess without using the filters.

>>729607260I think you should split things across scenes even more, or study some project to see how they do things. I can't really understand your project without a screenshot or something similar.
If you made a prototype for your game, when did you move over from the prototype to the real thing? I've been making vertical slices of different genres and games throughout this year for the sake of learning, and now I'm doing one for the genre I actually want my first game to be. It's still a long way off being at a point where I'd be comfortable saying this is the game itself, even in an early form, so I view it as more of a prototype than anything else, but I'm wondering how I should move over to the real deal when I get to that stage. A part of me feels like I should just copy over everything I have, but that also seems lazy so I don't know if it'd be wiser to redo everything from the ground up and just treat this as a throwaway project that exists just for learning. It still won't happen anytime soon anyway, but I'm curious if anyone else has been in a similar situation.
>>729607924Is the prototype fun enough to be a full game? Move onto making the full game.>lazyWho the fuck cares what's lazy or not? If it works and it saves you time, then it's not laziness, it's efficiency.
>>729607427Huh, haven't thought to use dialog with resources before. If I could make Godot var exports use/write to a CSV directly that'd be fucking dandy for shit like weapon/equipment stats, since I like having my shit all in one place.
>>729608132I have all the actual text in a .json file. The resources are for setting up the dialogue itself like in picrel: which text to show, which animation to play while doing so and all that stuff

>>729606097Kinda. It sounds like you might be be able to cut some, like how static bodies can have their own low friction PhysicsMaterial instead of an Area3D to make things slippery and there's a VisibleOnScreenEnabler3D/Notifier3D for rendering zones. It should be possible to roll some of these into one. Instead of separate triggers to start a cutscene, fix the camera, and change music you tie it all to the Zone you're entering or whatever. Don't forget you can delegate responsibilities to non-spacial Nodes or Resources so you can have one Area3D trigger set them off instead of putting it all under some ugly monolith script or a bunch of visible objects. Some of these sound unavoidable if you need that level of control, in which case all you can do is organize. Remember that each CollisionShape3D can have its own color in the editor and you can put them under a parent node to toggle visibility all at once. Or make the areas @tool objects so they can hide themselves on demand, but tool scripts can get messy

>>729613468>What makes you think the lifebar is in any way related to how near or far the save points are from each other?Basic design philosophy. If I see a flimsy protagonist like Super Meat Boy or Celeste, I know the player probably respawns in the same room because they aren't willing to do instant death traps over and over. Mario dies in one or two hits so his checkpoints are about half a minute apart. Link has a billion hearts plus potions and fairies, so nobody minds if he respawns at the very start of a dungeon.Your guy can take some punishment and use healing items like Link, so he's built to withstand journeys of considerable length. I can't say "hey, don't even bother marking checkpoints" like I can for Super Mario because that could be hugely important information for the player.Of course, it's not a perfect metric. Mega Man can carry a million hit points but faces enough instant death traps to need checkpoints spaced like Mario's

While getting ready to design one of the final weapons, I realized I had made an egregious error that required correcting, though it's one I'm loath to admit: Agile class enemies had to have their tits nerfed by 10%. I was adjusting weapon scales because Agiles are 1.1x the size of the player, and I realized that I didn't correct for this engine scaling in the base model, so their energy cores needed to be reduced in size so they'd be correct after the 1.1x scaling of the rig. But since the energy core is the left tit in these models... I'm sorry /v/ I had to do itFunnily enough I think this makes them look more proportional and a lot better overall, which I'm pretty sure makes me gay.

>>729619889i have a feeling the other game dev related boards are inactive because the majority of anons who do infrequently post there are actually making their games.the graveyards are full of jesters so to speak.>>729620950coming from another dev working on 3d robot stuff, this is very wonderful anon, good work.do you have a sketch of the full character? rollerblade robot girl i'm assuming?
>>729621035Thanks!The whole concept started with tiny feet, so I feel like I have to see it through.May change the size in the end, if it doesn't fit.>>729621334Thank you!No, going by some images I have in my head.It usually ends up looking completely different, but hopefully it will still look interesting.
>>729621334>>729621554And, yes, rollerblade robogirl is pretty spot on!
>>729621221>but at least he stays on topicHAHAHAHAHAHA
Havent touched my game in a month or 2. Work + christmas break and all that.Last i was working on it i was doing A* pathfinding and the beginning of combat. So yeah, just had to take a break right before the hard stuff huh past me?
I'm not Fygoon. I'm simply asking questions, believe me I'm not Fygoon. Why would people attack someone clearly not me posting about game development in a game dev thread. He and clearly not me, because I'm not him stays on topic. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same about my haters.
gamedev?
>>729621873gamesuffering.
>>729621787>Not hating Fygoon means that the poster must be Fygoon because....reasons!!!
>>729620860>Does fagoon seriously have nothing better to do than harass another dev?applies to all the games out there that make it>ENA>Peripeteia>Sybil>never-evers (Air Strip Angels + The Scramble Vice)>...etc
>>729622087You forgot the Wonder of Blue, he kept showing up with his gay green dragon avatar and shitting on it as the first reply furiously refreshing the catalog
>>729617724If dodge is a roll specifically, so it feels like a “moving crouch”, and holding the button after the roll leaves you crouched, that works, but for the love of god, lose the lock on input from there. That’s just atrocious.
i come into these threads every few months or so to see if the circumstances have changed and i'm surprised you guys are still talking about this person.any specific reason why you guys keep taking the bait and fixating on them?
>>729622243so if I succeed I might get attacked and stalked by lizard?

>>729622473You're obsessed to the point of being deranged. Dude, chill out and work on your game instead of wasting so much energy on a complete stranger. You do have a game, right?
>>729622473Yes basically everything they tell you to be scared of with the 4chan mentally ill hacker guy but without the skills
Knocking out code for node types for my rouge-like. I have no assets done, everything is a place holder. I got 2 left for initial set. When I finish, I think I will work on basic layout system. I have everything placed hard coded and a mix of functions toLeftOf, centerOf, below, etc. I want do something a little bit better. Anyone know of a good basic layout system I can mimic or use if its C++ and friendly license?
We need 1 deranged anon to doxx and kill f*goon

>>729623242I wonder if he's using some sort of script because he's originally from the sharty people said. He can't be this mentally ill to watch the catalog 24/7 right?

I'll post /v/3 anyway. Wishlist the guys on the right.

I wanted my game to be black and white because nice style. But goddamn the readability is gone now.>Top left is a bank + wizard>Left is a giant telescope>Top right is a throne and a staircase, staircase is temp though>Rest is an empty room and 2 caverns.Do i need to do pixel sizing, white backgrounds or just succumb to colour?
>>729623908use silhouettes to actually make black/white look clear
>>729623354>I wonder if he's using some sort of scriptCould be>because he's originally from the sharty people said.Absolutely not surprising im the least. Is there proof for this though? He started his shit tenure here since 2023 which somewhat corroborates this but some screenshots would be golden.>He can't be this mentally ill to watch the catalog 24/7 right?I thought the same but he's on EST timezone and he does miss out on threads.
>>729622473cool list thanks for the clarification.though not sure if you realize it but you're sucking this person's dick more than anyone else at this point mr fygoon lorekeeper

-FINALLY figured out how to get Unreal to run shit in 4:3 mode. Turns out I was doing everything right, it's just the engine wasn't setting the camera correctly when starting. Now just need to add the setting in the options menu, update the UIs to sizebox correctly, and create a few pieces of art for the side UI panels.-Polishing up the beginning areas and doing bug testing for an initial Alpha demo.-Put together a WIP itch page to devlog some shit. Not published yet, but I do appreciate eyes and feedback (https://3gg1.itch.io/gloamsnarl?secret=Qf9UgJcrWB2BR6inHHzHaIqc3g)-Creating and populating all the various SFX and ambient tracks for weather and areas. The work continues.

>>729593337i used hammer++ with godots vmf plugin and it works wellthe only main drawback is having to recreate all the textures in the vtf/vmt formati just really wish unity had something at all even close to yet, its been decades and not a single person has come up with a solution recently ue5 got scythe editor and im jealous as shit
>>729624741SabreCSG?
>>729624612Looking good. Nice skybox specially.
>>729624179That helped, but im just gonna have to go for simple coloured highlights.
>>729624612maybe it's just because the images got resized or something to do with being on a large flat color, but the scanlines look really rough in the first 3 pictures on itch. the other 3 pictures are mostly fine
>>729624612Nice progress Anon.
I'm trying to fill out a story for my action roguelike to make it more like an rpg because I'm fucking retarded or something. It has a bizarre 1080p pixel art aesthetic and I'm going to mix in brush drawings to play in the background like a puppet-theater so they don't interrupt gameplay.
>>729624612>looks like something a Voodoo 1 could run>probably needs a 1050gtx at minimum to hit 60fps
>>729624820horrendously outdated and not even remotely feasible to do real work with itive tried all the fucking CSG editors for unity and theyre quite literally all non functional
