I legitimately though that the game was bugged so I rewound time and came at it from a different direction. When it happened again I realized that it was a time serpent and what it was doing. Wasn't particularly challenging once I realized what was going on but I can't recall any other instance of this happening at the moment.

Go back to the gate. <--- He's gotten this far in a week, once.>8. Actually go up through the gate.>9. Don't get distracted after the trainer battle.>10. Notice the statue, not the beds.>11. Go in the next room along the path.>12. Stand under the statue in the room. This one is up against a wall so it'll be easier in theory.>13. Use the statue again, don't hallucinate you need to press both.>14. Leave the room, and go west, not east.>15. Don't get distracted by the room on the way, there's a hidden rare candy but that's it.>16. Don't get distracted by the next room, with an item on the table.>17.
