I was getting super disappointed until I got to Costa De Sol and kind of put the main story quest to the side to do the data battles. And then I started off again just to see how Cait Sith plays. By the time I finished the Golden Saucer arc I was much more invested in the side quests, minigames and extra content. Even when I finally beat the game and I loved that final battle sequence, it was all rather fucking stupid. All spectacle with no substance but at least it tried to give closure on this big moment all fans know is going to happen with a send off that leaves you questioning what the next game is even going to be. I really enjoyed it. It's probably one of my top RPG combat systems of all time next to Star Ocean 4 (And that games story was ALSO shit), Summon Night 1 and 2 and Kingdom Hearts 2.

FF16 is a game that takes itself way too seriously and lacks because of that, Rebirth just goes a touch too far in the other direction. Have at least half of the NPCs be serious so that your setting doesn't feel like an amusement park or at least lean in to "the world is ending so nobody gives a fuck anymore" angle like Majora's Mask, to explain why there are so many freaks around.
