Some people however will really love that game since it fixes a lot of issues wave-based games have, and I wouldn't blame them for their love of it.
It's kind of funny how this game tries so hard to keyjangle the references to the original marathon trilogy with all the cryptic terminals, and the references to swords at the start, but it all just feels shallow, like the dev didn't even play the game(s) he's referencing. Not saying a boomer shooter with nuMarathon's visuals with the old Marathon's skeleton is impossible, but why even try pandering to people who played a doom-clone about shooting proto-Covenant with a platformer where you collect the bing-bing-wahoo coins?The game's just Neon White but with more visual vomit and worse level design, if I wanted a time-attack shooter platformer I'd just play that.

There is zero challenge to the game, and zero depth, there is nothing to learn except walking backwards and holding left click until things die. Some might accuse Serious Sam of this, but in SS enemies have actual characteristics about them that require more, Kleers are usually spawned around the player and require more than single movement direction, reptiloids are obviously very advanced, and so on. Plus SS has what many games do not: enjoyable exploration. The secrets in a SS are often hilarious, and well hidden. A strange single armor shard in a corner can unleash a wave of killer palm trees, surprising and totally unexpected. Secrets and hidden areas are more than "heres some extra armor/hp/guns", they are fun activities made for the player to enjoy. As for Citadel, its a pathetic coomer tranime game for edgelords. Filled with an endless variety of pointless tacticool mechanics that serve no purpose in a doom clone with such limited enemies. If the games in unplayable weren't so exceptionally dreadful it would be there with them, one could at least with great effort, find the will to finish Citadel.

The reality of Cultic is clicking heads on brainless hitscanners - while close range is possible and done frequently in the tighter areas, on higher difficulties attempting a "guns blazing" approach is almost always certainly death when you aggro 50 different hitscan enemies in a large open area. There is not much alternative to offer because hitscanners have no recourse except breaking LOS, which in the large open areas of Cultic, is frequently very difficult. Nor is there any sort of "get good" to get, its a hitscan game with brainless ai, what is there to learn? What is there to improve on skill wise? Map and spawn memorization? Just like Blood, its not a very good indication of real skill, only rote memorization with trial and error. We have long since moved beyond the simplicity and low quality game design that nostalgia bait such as Cultic offer to older generations, singleplayer FPS is a genre that has improved over time drastically. Mostly due to the influence of character action ethos.
