>>733776307https://store.steampowered.com/app/4041880/KARATE_ROGUE_Demo/Reposting for those that have not played it. It's a turn-based RPG in a procedurally-generated dungeon and you fight using karate moves which you can chain up if you have stock. You can learn passive skills, and sub skills which you can trigger that do not use your turn. You cannot name your character, instead, the game gives you a set of random names. There's a story mode with a tutorial and an arcade mode with no tutorial in which you play for score.

I'm gonna be honest: I tried Withering Realms and I thought the gameplay was severely underbaked. However I'm willing to admit this might just be a major lapse in my own skills or judgment. Which is why I'm posting about it in this thread. I want to see if there was something I was "missing" that everyone else seemed to get.In my experience, the challenge was designed all wrong because enemies suffering no hitstun means that every encounter revolves around a cycle of strafing, spacing, attacking, dodging, and repeat. The problem with this is that the game clearly wants to be a test of consistency. But the only viable strat itself (as far as I found) was liable to get you hit, even if you were patient and careful. Am I missing some mechanic that balances this out or makes the combat more interesting?
>>733778524No, it's a 2D game where you roll to the left and right of the enemy turned to 3D
>>733778568I just thought it was weird because I've seen nothing but unanimous praise for it in these threads. I couldn't help but feel most of the story was just a mad libs formula for Souls plot and that the gameplay was just Souls except none of what made it work? Harsh as that may sound, I kept thinking over it with consideration and that's still what I ended up coming to every time.
>>733778684>the story was just a mad libs formula for Souls plotThe ghost you're playing as is the spirit of the girl from Withering Rooms I'm pretty sure. As for if it's a Souls-like, idk I guess you could call it that.
>>733776897So far>Absolute Must-PlaysMightreya > Denshattack! >= In Falsus>High Up ThereTohotopia >= Cicadamata>Pretty GoodRepterra>GoodMaids of Storm even if it rips entirely off the Yakuza 0 hostess minigame>Good (but not for me)Boost Vector EX>Thought it needed a lot of workWithering RealmsNext on my list>Gunboat God>Crack in the Dark>Lost Host>Matcho>Goblin Vyke>Airframe Ultra>Annihilation>The Last Salvage Squad>Alabaster Dawn
>>733778684>>733778754I didn't beat Act 3 of Withering Rooms though. It was a Clock Tower Roguelite which is a very niche genre.Apparently she becomes a doll at the end
>>733778754That's the part that made me really interested. When the story wasn't a Souls mad lib it was good. When it was, I wasn't really into it.Also not saying it's a Souls-like. I'm saying more like it's clear how much it lifted from Souls, but also how much they changed the system to be one that doesn't really fit what was taken. So it ends up way less functional than its inspiration despite all the difference and ends up as a worse version of the same thing IMO.

Got two stages into the Dungeons of Dusk demo, it plays alright but I think the aesthetic doesn't work nearly as well for a dungeon crawler as it does for the FPS. The floors are super boring to look at (the store page screenshots don't even imply the existence of environments other than brick sewer), the muted colors make it hard to read the map if you don't full-screen it, the skill tree looked pretty boring with a lot of levels necessary to get to anything more than +5HP or +1% accuracy, I just don't really see myself playing it for more than an hour or two for the novelty and then going back to something like EO if I actually want to crawl a dungeon.https://store.steampowered.com/app/4176460/Dungeons_of_DUSK/

I first thought CICADAMATA was a speed-based game but you can actually take your sweet time as long as you rack up points. Not sure if this is a good design decision
>>733793342It's such a weird tonal shift. Goes from RE7 "Go Tell Aunt Rhody" opening to diving in the dark and being chased by Deep Ones. There seems to be a framing device somewhere in there, and Cthulhu meets 2050s setting is certainly a choice.

>>733794868No, actually, I just sort of optimized everything. I actually have a job and attend school. But my job is construction site medic and I don't have to do anything at all if no one is hammering their thumbs. Hardly anyone hammers their thumbs. So I sit there and I play video games. and study for class and watch tv and stuff. Whatever I want, really. And I get paid really well.

I don't want to spoil it but basically it doesn't fall into much of any of the common tropes. btw I'm refering to 野人転生 ie "Yajin Tensei Karate Survivor in Another World", not "Karate Baka Isekai" which I haven't read and is probably sheit

I've played 70+ demos so far. The last ten or so Fests I've made elaborate graphical charts with images and blurbs of my thoughts on each game. this time it feels like there are way too many to play to divulge time for such a thing. I might do it later - usually I rate games on a S - A - B - C - D - E - F scale, but if I do it now it would be something like Wishlisted - Decent - Not for me / Needs more workmany of the titles in the Decent category should really be in the "Not for me" one insteadnot that anyone will read this anyway lol 230 downloaded demos to go

>Kingdom's Return: Time-Eating Fruit and the Ancient MonsterThis one reminds me of actriser expect it somehow feels grindy, the combat feels stiff and is pretty much rpg oriented. Found this 2D Metal Gear clone on my recommended list. It's really just Metal Gear (closer than 1 than Ghost Babel) but with weapon/item swapping buttons, a dash button and some extra UI elements. It's a bit annoying how the character doesn't stop moving immediately after you release the analog stick, and making everything green for that "Retro™ experience" really wasn't the best choice.I wish it was a Ghost Babel clone (you know, with more than one color) but at least it's not a deckbuilding roguelite about depression.https://store.steampowered.com/app/4152490/Spy_Drops_Gaiden/

Shall ask again because I got no answer last time, are there any games this fest that aren't H-games that actually have panty shots?
>>733813868Legitimately very good and extremely important question. I would like to know this as well.
Bombun desperately needs a longer and better music loop
Alright, what are the kemono game recommendations this time around? No western styles.
>>733814368It desperately needs to be a better game.
>>733807809I completed two missions in this game and it was really cozy, but after the second base I already had most shit unlocked except the topological sensor. The game is even more simple than deaths stranding, especially after you've unlocked the cruise control. How could you not get bored after 30 minutes of this? Please, PLEASE just play Mars First logistics instead. It's very similar in theme, but you get to customize your vehicle for each delivery mission. You have to design a vehicle that not only can transport the specific object for any given mission, it also has to be able to load and unload the object. The building is done through a very simple and intuitive interface, very controller friendly. I know Deep Snow Delivery will sell 100x what Mars First did, and it hurts me. I'm even saying this as a fan of the manga Deep Snow took inspiration from.
>>733815001I like the character dynamics and the aesthetic, and I think the first area is obviously designed to be safer and make you kind of listless to see the rest of the game. The stuff with the ice in the metro cave was neat, I'd like to see more stuff like that.
>>733813868Everyone says that Mightreya doesn't and while that is true for the main character (she's wearing shorts) her friend that follows you around does have panties.
I haven't had the time to dive into them yet but I've installed all of the following demos:>Airframe Ultra>AUDIOMECH>Brave Rounds>BrebeMan>CICADAMATA>Dash'n'Drops>Denshattack>Dogfight Darlings>Gunboat God>Knitewings>Mega Kaiju Boom Ball>MIGHTREYA>ULTRA0Anything along the lines of these also worth looking at? Seems like there's less beat-em-ups than the past couple Fests but more shmups.
>>733815001I got 4 hours out of my first session with deep snow and didn't even leave the first area, I think it's more fun when you have to work with what you've got and picking stuff up along the way can lead to disaster.
>>733815384>Airframe UltraI played with a controller and it can take a bit to get used to the controls. The Mp lobbies are a shitfest but in a good way. I'm unsure if you need to get good at aiming or if there's some auto-target.>CICADAMATAVery worth trying it out if you're into fast-paced score attack fps platformers. The closest game I can think of that is Lovely Planet. It can be a bit overstimulating with how noisy the visuals are and I can see it being a deal-breaker.
>>733815453>I think it's more fun when you have to work with what you've goThat's the core essence of MFL, you get limited parts and often have to redesign and rethink your solutions several times to manage unless you're some kind of lego genius In Deep snow you just place the handful of objects you can manage in a hole and hold W until you reach the next destination. At most you'll throw out a couple of lesser objects along the way to make room for more expensive scrap.
>>733815384Personally my favorites on that list are Denshattack and Mightreya. Gunboat God for me wasn't bad but also wasn't good. Airframe Ultra is an awesome idea that needs way more time to bake. Feels like the devs tried too hard to make it extreme by forcing more hazards and deaths than was reasonable. Which makes multiplayer feel more obnoxious than cool or fun like it could be. Cicadamata is one of this Next Fest's strongest entries by far. While not for me, it's worth checking out at the very least. Haven't played anything else on that list.
>>733815384https://store.steampowered.com/app/4297450/Magical_Girl_Final_Pink_Star
>>733815745>The Mp lobbies are a shitfest but in a good way.Getting third or fourth place in a race, entering a Quick fight, only to get killed just in time for the next race section is fucking maddening. But somehow it's all right because you know the other people will wipe out into oncoming traffic or you'll merc them in the next battle anyway. It's fun. I do have a hard time judging how to spend cash though. EMP nades seem OP, I've gotten 3-4 kills with each throw in battle sections on 8 man lobbies.
>>733815001yeah, that was basically my impression as well. I played a few missions and felt like I was playing MFL without the good part. I did like the vibe though, especially how your pilots sometimes randomly chatted while driving.
>>733815892But your car is always meant to handle the shipment, it's the premise of the game, and I just want to organize and re-organize to see if I can fit another rail spike or i-beam into a full box and not immediately dump everything else trying to make it work.
>>733801495>btw I'm refering to 野人転生 ie "Yajin Tensei Karate Survivor in Another World"Not the guy you were replying to, but I just picked it up on your recommendation and just finished volume 7. The author's notes in particular are super interesting. Really good stuff.
Any good idle/incremental?I finished Dwarf eats moutains and it was pretty good.
>>733815745>I'm unsure if you need to get good at aiming or if there's some auto-target.yeah the whole weapon system confused me a lot. Some weapons I just didn't really know how to use. It was fun in a clusterfucky way though.
>>733816012>Airframe Ultra is an awesome idea that needs way more time to bakeIt's really fun as it is, but each level has hundreds of bugged sections where you can get stuck or splatted by random chance. That's not necessarily a bad thing - the levels feeling dangerous does go hand-in-hand with the theme and I actually enjoy the uncertain nature of taking shortcuts when you know you have an opponent on your tail which could kick you into dangerous geometry if you give them an inch
https://store.steampowered.com/app/4302110/CHASM_SHIFT/PLAY THIS!Super fun precision/puzzle platformer. Great movement, very cool visuals and manages to work without a single word. Genuinely would buy this right now if it was possible.
>>733815745>Very worth trying it out if you're into fast-paced score attack fps platformersHonestly can't say I'm that into them; I bounced off Neon White (though the story was just as much reason why). But it does look really slick so I'll try it.>>733816012All that sounds about what I expected.>>733816056Skipped over this when I saw it because it's legit just Flappy Bird Survivors with a magical girl sprite attached to it but I will say watching the gameplay again made me realize the music is very nice.

>>733807809Probably the only game I've seen that got close to Girl's Last Tour aesthetic. Mainly just hoping there's more to it later on.
Disappointed in Denshattack's trick system inputs. That shit's as inaccurate as graffiti sprays in Jet Set Radio. Wish it had SSX/THPS trick inputs instead, and the charged jumps similar to Mario Kart World are also abhorrent.
>>733813868super alloy crush
>>733816165Excactly. It's a shame. Overall I whish we'd see the MFL dev take on a snow planet with more dialogue. Honestly, comparing the two game engines it's like night and day. MFL is soo much more polished and optimized. Still, DSD has really nice word building. Maybe they could merge...
>>733816262I don't think it's a bad thing that the levels are so dangerous. I do think however it's a bad thing that the levels involve a ton of hazards that conflict with your options or what's even fun about them.>Annoying turns that force you to slow down and zigzag or crash>Finding the goal is often obnoxious because paths jut at the weirdest angles that don't make sense for a game of this speed>Some routes actually just have hazards that can't be reacted to in order to avoid crashing>Game can lock you out of skill-based counterplay at many points if you don't have the right itemsJust to name a few of very many issues. The high death count would be great if there was a sense of high reward to go with the risk. But it's just high risk low reward for basically everything you do which is plain annoying.
>looking through the queue>see streamer reaction cam video as the trailer>open game and and click ignore>continue back to the queueI wish I could filter all games that do this shit.
>>733815001It's a very different experience from MFL but I like both. Funnily enough I discovered MFL through the next fest as well
>>733816941Is it up to the dev whether they have that or not? I don't wanna punish devs for something that's out of their hands.
>>733816440>All that sounds about what I expectedIf you've got tastes that are anything like mine, I'd highly recommend also checking out In Falsus and The Last Salvage Squad. Those two + Mightreya and Denshattack have been the Four Heavenly Kings of my Next Fest, personally speaking.
>>733816850Seems like two different audiences desu
>>733817081It was a montage of clips, so I assume it was one of the videos they put on their game's page.
>>733816852>Annoying turns that force you to slow down and zigzag or crashThis is not a negative imo, going at max speed all the time gets boring. It's the acceleration and sharp turns that builds thrill into the spikes of speed. Holding L1 to slow down and turn is a must >Finding the goal is often obnoxiouYeah some levels I didn't know where the fuck iI was supposed to go. Again, thematically I can see how a biker gang sets a weird course throw odd alleys and such, but that only makes sense when you know the town inside out. So - the first few times you play the levels you'll be lost, but in the end, complex levels feel kinda refreshing imo >Some routes actually just have hazards that can't be reacted to in order to avoid crashingEven worse - some routes have invisible walls which funnel you towards dead ends, killing you if you don't slow down or turn in time. The invisible walls/digital walls are what makes this bad. Just make it an in-game object instead >Game can lock you out of skill-based counterplay at many points if you don't have the right itemsYeah, and the game makes it more and more hard to catch up - the leader always gets the first attempt to pickups and the first pick of gear in combat zones. It makes boosting early a must - you need to be in the lead. Only keep one boost on you for rebuilding speed after crashes. All valid complaints, but I haven't played enough to say how I'd do it differently

>>733816986>Funnily enough I discovered MFL through the next fest as wellyeah me 2>>733817220I can see how a DSD fan would look at MFL and only think of those PVP vehicle combat games with floaty, janky physics, but they really are quite similar. MFL even has a narrative, but it is very light hearted
https://store.steampowered.com/app/3812500/Profana_Demo/The music is awful and the gameplay needs to feel smoother, but I like the idea of simple 2D DMC combos and having to time your jumps just right for i-frames

Some anons in an earlier thread mentioned Operation Eventide and after trying it I thought it was pretty cool. Yuri Visual novel about some magical girl soldier who's revived as a cyborg. Written with sort of a body horror slant which was interesting.https://store.steampowered.com/app/4200970/Operation_Eventide/Also found out that the game is already out in it's entirety on itchio for free. Steam version is basically a 'definitive edition' with new stuff.Yes there are H scenes, but not in the demo.
>>733819892Such a weird mash up of things. Black mc and soulsslop are instant turn offs but the aesthetic had potential. Animations indeed seem a bit too amateurish.I remember Malebolgia from the same dev and seems like he really hasn't gotten better at animating in 10 years which doesn't bode well for this guy. It's his 4th steam game so you'd think he'd be getting better at it.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/2190700/Altered_Alma/Metroidvania that plays a bit like Megaman Zero. The main gimmick is a teleporting dagger that can be used for platforming and combat. It has some technical issues (the dagger can be unreliable at times, especially in combat) but gameplay-wise it's pretty decent.Honestly I didn't enjoy it but I'm sure someone here is looking for a jump'n'exploran game with:>female MC with romance options (a alien dude and a punk girl. I assume the lizard girl and the brown girl from the trailer are also romanceable)>lots of excuses to explore and grind money (combat skills, equipment slots, passive skill tree)>very few checkpoints and limited healing (you slowly recharge your cyber-potions by hitting enemies after teleporting to them)>cyberpunk world with giant dildo traps and more spikes than the entirely of Megaman X6

Went through like 300 and grabbed that ones that looked interesting (anime, vns, strategy or rogue)I tried about half today and will write up the rest later:a: operation eventide - a true indie vn that has soul and fun art, dark vn about magic girl killed and brought back as robotb: sakura arms - fun 1v1 card game based on a board game ghost roomate - surprinsgly charming and hot vnc. ace strategy - very bland, felt super rough around the edges, deckbuilders already crowdedd. soul trigger - combat takes way too long, and 'card based' doesnt feel goo here ashes of sigularity - too much stuff is going on, way too many resources and buildings happening at once, very bad ui glitches toopreledomena - didn't hook me, typical 'meta' storyas some other anons have pointed out two of the vns you can apparently get or soon get on itch.io for free.
