In this thread we commit the greatest crime of them all: having fun playing videogames.
Discover demos, play demos, share demos.

https://store.steampowered.com/sale/nextfest

Devs are encouraged to promote their games, please show us your talent and save us from the dumpster diving of the steam next fest.

Nothing against cicadamata, I enjoyed it too but the other thread didn't really seem suitable.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/4041880/KARATE_ROGUE_Demo/
Reposting for those that have not played it. It's a turn-based RPG in a procedurally-generated dungeon and you fight using karate moves which you can chain up if you have stock. You can learn passive skills, and sub skills which you can trigger that do not use your turn. You cannot name your character, instead, the game gives you a set of random names. There's a story mode with a tutorial and an arcade mode with no tutorial in which you play for score.

It only has two basic bosses to fight for now, so you don't really need to do anything interesting with your movement, but it feels like it could go pretty hard, and maybe add some boosters and the sort as upgrades in full release.
A bit unhappy with "random upgrades between stages", but eh.

I'm gonna be honest: I tried Withering Realms and I thought the gameplay was severely underbaked. However I'm willing to admit this might just be a major lapse in my own skills or judgment. Which is why I'm posting about it in this thread. I want to see if there was something I was "missing" that everyone else seemed to get.

In my experience, the challenge was designed all wrong because enemies suffering no hitstun means that every encounter revolves around a cycle of strafing, spacing, attacking, dodging, and repeat. The problem with this is that the game clearly wants to be a test of consistency. But the only viable strat itself (as far as I found) was liable to get you hit, even if you were patient and careful. Am I missing some mechanic that balances this out or makes the combat more interesting?
>>
>>733778524
No, it's a 2D game where you roll to the left and right of the enemy turned to 3D
>>
>>733778568
I just thought it was weird because I've seen nothing but unanimous praise for it in these threads. I couldn't help but feel most of the story was just a mad libs formula for Souls plot and that the gameplay was just Souls except none of what made it work? Harsh as that may sound, I kept thinking over it with consideration and that's still what I ended up coming to every time.
>>
>>733778684
>the story was just a mad libs formula for Souls plot
The ghost you're playing as is the spirit of the girl from Withering Rooms I'm pretty sure. As for if it's a Souls-like, idk I guess you could call it that.

I didn't beat Act 3 of Withering Rooms though. It was a Clock Tower Roguelite which is a very niche genre.

Apparently she becomes a doll at the end
>>
>>733778754
That's the part that made me really interested. When the story wasn't a Souls mad lib it was good. When it was, I wasn't really into it.

Also not saying it's a Souls-like. I'm saying more like it's clear how much it lifted from Souls, but also how much they changed the system to be one that doesn't really fit what was taken. So it ends up way less functional than its inspiration despite all the difference and ends up as a worse version of the same thing IMO.

At a glance it looks like roguelite deckbuilder slop, but it's not really a deckbuilder since the "cards" are weapons/items with limited uses. Surprisingly fun if you're into resource management. Also you can disarm some bosses mid-combat and use their own weapon against them, which is cool

Earth has opened up for Alien visits and you have to make sure no troublemakers get in. It's fun to see the quirks of different species and each day you can read in a newspaper about what's going on in the world right now, which also depends on who you let in. Got two stages into the Dungeons of Dusk demo, it plays alright but I think the aesthetic doesn't work nearly as well for a dungeon crawler as it does for the FPS. The floors are super boring to look at (the store page screenshots don't even imply the existence of environments other than brick sewer), the muted colors make it hard to read the map if you don't full-screen it, the skill tree looked pretty boring with a lot of levels necessary to get to anything more than +5HP or +1% accuracy, I just don't really see myself playing it for more than an hour or two for the novelty and then going back to something like EO if I actually want to crawl a dungeon.

not bad I guess but I think I have enough stealth stalker games honestly, they're not THAT fun. You're some spoiled brat who works illegally at a studio for some reason, as if it's illegal to sing at age 16. You can sing whenever you want. Then you get stabbed in the neck and are probably already dead when the game starts.

PSA REMINDER
Since it it now Wednesday the algorithm will now be recommending you popular demos so you no longer have the right to complain about being recommended bad games. If you ARE recommended bad games then that's your fault for playing garbage and Steam recommending you similar stuff.

I've read a decent amount of isekai sloppa and this one really transcends the genre and becomes actually decent. the first two chapters a bit rough, but after that it's ace.
I don't want to spoil it but basically it doesn't fall into much of any of the common tropes.
btw I'm refering to 野人転生 ie "Yajin Tensei Karate Survivor in Another World", not "Karate Baka Isekai" which I haven't read and is probably sheit

yeah it looked like a turn from the images I saw when searching for an image to go with my post.
I've read a few hundred different isekai so I know what you mean. there are maybe ten or so I would consider good, idk why I subject myself to this genre when I know there are thousands of good series out there I won't have the time to read before I die even if I start now

I've played 70+ demos so far. The last ten or so Fests I've made elaborate graphical charts with images and blurbs of my thoughts on each game.
this time it feels like there are way too many to play to divulge time for such a thing.
I might do it later - usually I rate games on a S - A - B - C - D - E - F scale, but if I do it now it would be something like Wishlisted - Decent - Not for me / Needs more work
many of the titles in the Decent category should really be in the "Not for me" one instead

>Kingdom's Return: Time-Eating Fruit and the Ancient Monster
This one reminds me of actriser expect it somehow feels grindy, the combat feels stiff and is pretty much rpg oriented. It does feel like a slog and that it will be boring after 3 hours. It does have skills and 4 classes so maybe with a bit of patient there is more fun to find.

>Nophenia
Like someone said in this thread a 3d yume nikki. it looks nice, the couple enviroments in the demo aren't outlandish dreamscape but liminal spaces so far. I did felt like someone was inspired by russia.

>unanchored Spaceshooting
Alright, you shoot and it pushes you and you slide everywhere, the bullets push you as if you shot a kamehameha and you have only 4 shot. good luck gaining some semblance of control. play for like 4 seconds, died, maybe I'm being unfair but this sucked.

>Clockwork Ambrosia
Generic metroidvania, way too simple and got bored, the boring music didn't help at all either.

>Deep Sheol
It didn't work, the cursor dissapears so I couln't even choose lenguage.

>Hell World Reinvigorated
It wasn't good, is a doom wad and a bad one at that. some enemies are incredible annoying like the jaguar lady which move fast as hell and tank a lot, if you don't use the bombs is a boring slogfest, then hell head which are cacos and I dropped it when I took the key and a bunch of ghost appeared and blocked the tiny bridge. maybe it would improve if I get better weapons? dunno, is a shit hexen and hexen wasn't very good anyway.

>Last Salvage Squad
It was ok, is an arena shooter, kill some enemies with your weapon of choice, you have a few hits and so does the most enemies. It was a fun little fps. not much to say.

Yeah, I tried that one. I feel like it could be good with slightly more complexity. The loop can slog a bit if you get unlucky with purity card gains. Also didn't realize at first that you could only get one relic at a time and was forced to trad off the helpful "when you play 3 cards on a villager, clear the slots" relic for some other trash.

Found this 2D Metal Gear clone on my recommended list.
It's really just Metal Gear (closer than 1 than Ghost Babel) but with weapon/item swapping buttons, a dash button and some extra UI elements.
It's a bit annoying how the character doesn't stop moving immediately after you release the analog stick, and making everything green for that "Retro™ experience" really wasn't the best choice.

I wish it was a Ghost Babel clone (you know, with more than one color) but at least it's not a deckbuilding roguelite about depression.

I completed two missions in this game and it was really cozy, but after the second base I already had most shit unlocked except the topological sensor. The game is even more simple than deaths stranding, especially after you've unlocked the cruise control.
How could you not get bored after 30 minutes of this?
Please, PLEASE just play Mars First logistics instead. It's very similar in theme, but you get to customize your vehicle for each delivery mission. You have to design a vehicle that not only can transport the specific object for any given mission, it also has to be able to load and unload the object. The building is done through a very simple and intuitive interface, very controller friendly.
I know Deep Snow Delivery will sell 100x what Mars First did, and it hurts me.
I'm even saying this as a fan of the manga Deep Snow took inspiration from.
>>
>>733815001
I like the character dynamics and the aesthetic, and I think the first area is obviously designed to be safer and make you kind of listless to see the rest of the game. The stuff with the ice in the metro cave was neat, I'd like to see more stuff like that.

>>
>>733815001
I got 4 hours out of my first session with deep snow and didn't even leave the first area, I think it's more fun when you have to work with what you've got and picking stuff up along the way can lead to disaster.
>>
>>733815384
>Airframe Ultra
I played with a controller and it can take a bit to get used to the controls. The Mp lobbies are a shitfest but in a good way. I'm unsure if you need to get good at aiming or if there's some auto-target.
>CICADAMATA
Very worth trying it out if you're into fast-paced score attack fps platformers. The closest game I can think of that is Lovely Planet. It can be a bit overstimulating with how noisy the visuals are and I can see it being a deal-breaker.
>>
>>733815453
>I think it's more fun when you have to work with what you've go
That's the core essence of MFL, you get limited parts and often have to redesign and rethink your solutions several times to manage unless you're some kind of lego genius
In Deep snow you just place the handful of objects you can manage in a hole and hold W until you reach the next destination. At most you'll throw out a couple of lesser objects along the way to make room for more expensive scrap.
>>
>>733815384
Personally my favorites on that list are Denshattack and Mightreya. Gunboat God for me wasn't bad but also wasn't good. Airframe Ultra is an awesome idea that needs way more time to bake. Feels like the devs tried too hard to make it extreme by forcing more hazards and deaths than was reasonable. Which makes multiplayer feel more obnoxious than cool or fun like it could be. Cicadamata is one of this Next Fest's strongest entries by far. While not for me, it's worth checking out at the very least. Haven't played anything else on that list.

Getting third or fourth place in a race, entering a Quick fight, only to get killed just in time for the next race section is fucking maddening. But somehow it's all right because you know the other people will wipe out into oncoming traffic or you'll merc them in the next battle anyway.
It's fun.
I do have a hard time judging how to spend cash though.
EMP nades seem OP, I've gotten 3-4 kills with each throw in battle sections on 8 man lobbies.
>>
>>733815001

>Airframe Ultra is an awesome idea that needs way more time to bake
It's really fun as it is, but each level has hundreds of bugged sections where you can get stuck or splatted by random chance.
That's not necessarily a bad thing - the levels feeling dangerous does go hand-in-hand with the theme and I actually enjoy the uncertain nature of taking shortcuts when you know you have an opponent on your tail which could kick you into dangerous geometry if you give them an inch

>>
>>733816262
I don't think it's a bad thing that the levels are so dangerous. I do think however it's a bad thing that the levels involve a ton of hazards that conflict with your options or what's even fun about them.

>Annoying turns that force you to slow down and zigzag or crash
>Finding the goal is often obnoxious because paths jut at the weirdest angles that don't make sense for a game of this speed
>Some routes actually just have hazards that can't be reacted to in order to avoid crashing
>Game can lock you out of skill-based counterplay at many points if you don't have the right items
Just to name a few of very many issues.

The high death count would be great if there was a sense of high reward to go with the risk. But it's just high risk low reward for basically everything you do which is plain annoying.

>Annoying turns that force you to slow down and zigzag or crash
This is not a negative imo, going at max speed all the time gets boring. It's the acceleration and sharp turns that builds thrill into the spikes of speed. Holding L1 to slow down and turn is a must
>Finding the goal is often obnoxiou
Yeah some levels I didn't know where the fuck iI was supposed to go. Again, thematically I can see how a biker gang sets a weird course throw odd alleys and such, but that only makes sense when you know the town inside out. So - the first few times you play the levels you'll be lost, but in the end, complex levels feel kinda refreshing imo
>Some routes actually just have hazards that can't be reacted to in order to avoid crashing
Even worse - some routes have invisible walls which funnel you towards dead ends, killing you if you don't slow down or turn in time. The invisible walls/digital walls are what makes this bad. Just make it an in-game object instead
>Game can lock you out of skill-based counterplay at many points if you don't have the right items
Yeah, and the game makes it more and more hard to catch up - the leader always gets the first attempt to pickups and the first pick of gear in combat zones. It makes boosting early a must - you need to be in the lead. Only keep one boost on you for rebuilding speed after crashes.
All valid complaints, but I haven't played enough to say how I'd do it differently

Metroidvania that plays a bit like Megaman Zero. The main gimmick is a teleporting dagger that can be used for platforming and combat.
It has some technical issues (the dagger can be unreliable at times, especially in combat) but gameplay-wise it's pretty decent.
Honestly I didn't enjoy it but I'm sure someone here is looking for a jump'n'exploran game with:

Went through like 300 and grabbed that ones that looked interesting (anime, vns, strategy or rogue)

I tried about half today and will write up the rest later:

a: operation eventide - a true indie vn that has soul and fun art, dark vn about magic girl killed and brought back as robot

b: sakura arms - fun 1v1 card game based on a board game
ghost roomate - surprinsgly charming and hot vn

c. ace strategy - very bland, felt super rough around the edges, deckbuilders already crowded

d. soul trigger - combat takes way too long, and 'card based' doesnt feel goo here
ashes of sigularity - too much stuff is going on, way too many resources and buildings happening at once, very bad ui glitches too
preledomena - didn't hook me, typical 'meta' story

as some other anons have pointed out two of the vns you can apparently get or soon get on itch.io for free.

Fun demo, I just hope it isn't like his other game monumentum where the full game hardly progressed past its demo.

I liked all the songs in the playtest, played them over and over through each difficulty and didn't get bored of hearing them. Also kind of depends on if you like Hyper Electronic, DnB, that type of stuff. The teaser gives a good idea of what you will be hearing.

East asian genocide style game with loot pinata system
Combat was decent but still jank in some parts.
Also I tried to turn off the DLSS (it was on by default) and my fucking GPU fans were screaming like a plane jet

Starting Magical Princess now, I hope it has a proper translation instead of Volcano Princess' MTL trash.

I like the aesthetics but the actual gameplay feels really basic since it's all just small arenas where you just clear waves. I'm really hoping there's more to the game but I doubt it.
Too bad there isn't really any other games where you get to play as a giant robot girl.
The Citadel and Beyond Citadel had shit maps but at least it was an actual map that you can explore around and had cool mecha piloting parts at times.

I went through 1500 discovery queue games and they were all shit, survivor clones, store simulators, horror walking and mascot games, never ending deckbuilding trash etc.
>>
Phonopolis' demo is short but pretty. The Machinarium guys have still got it. Puzzles are basic but clever.

You should have updated the next fest page a few hours ago. I think you still had the non-filtered version before the algorithm kicked in. I noticed the difference because I had two tabs open

It takes place in a highly censorious regime. I like that Equilibrium storyline where art is hunted down.
I look forward to it as someone who loved the Samorost series and Happy Game.

A good example of people who know what they're good at and make something that does it perfectly.

Any other fps worth taking a look that arent CICADAMATA or the nun game?

Blast Cats is insane. Extremely 2001-esque game, gives a "very late 5th-gen release that got ported to 6th gen" impression aesthetically. Mechanics and level design vary from Banjo to the 3D Bomberman games to just a bit of DMC1 and the bosses are super elaborate. I don't think it's made for me but it's extremely well-made. Also despite not playing like Sonic at all the tutorial renders are absolutely meant to look like SA1.

Apart from some minor platforming, it's a walking sim. I know most of this game is just asset flips and UE5 tricks, but some of the environments are cool. Too bad about the jarring dialogue text boxes and boring JPGs

Blood High, love it or hate it, it certainly leans hard into speedrunning it seems.
The music is AI, but funny enough I didn't know until after I played because it is so generic I tuned it out instantly.

let's be honest, all that indie slop sucks
everyone shits on AAA slop but most people are too afraid to criticize indie slop
all these games are uninspired garage bootlegs like edgy earthbound clones, tranny slop and adhd memes

>>733831002
I'm gonna try it. I saw Crash Bandicoot as an influence also. It's just every 3D platformer in one it seems, which could be kino.

>most games are bad
Damn dude you really got me thinking with that one
