>We should be happy, and we are as long as we’re focused on the game we’re playing and not the industry that’s collapsing around it. Marathon’s commercial success, measured by outsiders mostly by the number of people Steam shows is actively playing the game at any given moment, has no bearing on our enjoyment. But I can’t help but follow those numbers because they are a reminder of how brutal the video game industry is right now, where it might be headed, and how viable Marathon and games like it are in the future.

>We don’t know how much Marathon cost to develop or what Sony Interactive Entertainment, which owns Bungie and is publishing the game, wants from it. The game has been a critical success, has reportedly sold 1.2 million copies, and players who have latched onto it like myself love how Bungie has been updating and balancing it after release. People are making horny fan art of Marathon characters.

>Adding to this player count anxiety is the fact that the video game industry appears to be going through what is increasingly looking like a proper crash. I don’t think we’ll ever have another near extinction event like the video game crash of 1983, where for a moment it didn’t seem like video games would even continue to be a thing, but a full one third of game developers in the U.S. were laid off last year, and the huge layoffs just keep on coming.

Folks, it's not looking good. The industry will lose something it can never get back if we let this game die...

Our friends at Remap Radio have spoken at length about why discussions about player numbers teach us little about games and are often toxic. Part of the reason that games like Concord and Highguard can crash and burn so quickly is that the numbers become a self-fulfilling prophecy. There’s skepticism about the game before it launches, and when it fails to go viral, people write it off because why would they invest their time in an online game with player numbers that signal imminent and unceremonious execution by its financial backers, which only leads to even lower player numbers. It also shifts the conversation entirely away from what the game is, what people like about it, and why, and to its business model, infecting players with the quarterly earnings report view of the world. Games and players become expressions and subjects of business models, and the part where we play games because we enjoy them are reduced to a curious byproduct of Sony’s Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization. Games from major publishers become either mega hits or are quickly slapped with the “dead game” label before they’re taken offline. What the game actually was is barely relevant.

Why did journos get so conjoined to this game anyway? As far as I can tell there isn't even any progressive content in it? Note that my impression of it is that it's dumb robots that bleed green shooting at each other and nothing else. Is it literally because this might be one of the final Western AAA games (besides gta vi), since even the article admits that sector is collapsing? It would explain why they wanted to take down Crimson Desert so badly
Note: everything I play is Japanese. I do not care about the performance of Crimson Desert, or Marathon for the matter

While this is true, it's also related to the global stock market heading towards a financial crisis now that the AI bubble is popping (the narrative is in place and Sam Altman was ragebaiting all this time to setup his shorts). Well the retarded niggers that play the game decided that this is the hardcore PvP extraction shooter because they're so desperate to not be Arc Raiders. It's a game where everyone who started earlier will have a statistical advantage on top of game knowledge. There's no reason to jump in to a game like this late unless you enjoy slamming your head into a brick wall, the only place for it to go until a reset is down, and no one should be faulted for not wanting to jump into this kind of game a month after release.
>>
The thousandth extraction shooter released this week isn't doing well! Who would have thought? Where are the 2 billion players hungry for extraction shooters to soak up all this junk we throw at them every day? Ahhhhh, I'm going to lose my mind! Extraction shooters! Ahhhh! It doesn't seem any more progressive than UT99 as far as setting and characters go. I'm just a casual pubby so maybe all the subversive shit drops in the endgame. The age cohort that journos are in are people that got into gaming when the fat XB was released. Seeing Bungie on a product is just nostalgia. They're the videogame equivalent of Disney adults.

If it's a single player game, player numbers don't matter. Dev teams are now always 1000+ size teams for the sole reason that investors see big number and think big popular game.
Said dev teams are now always fragmented across several countries with wildly differing time zones, with very incompetent managers who cannot actually keep up with this. Literally a ton of game development these days is waiting for a manager in some other distant part of the world actually get around to giving you something to do.
>>
>>736669012
They're certainly not spending it on assets. The environments and models are very low poly. They made some clever direction decisions to hide it, and it seems that they're relying on TAA to hide verts. You can set AA to Off in the settings and it's jaggy shit everywhere. The sewer entrance in the tutorial map goes from a nice rounded circle to a 32-vert circle. Like they've got some kind of DLSS5 built in. AA doesn't smooth out models usually. Game performs decently well on a 5090, but scales for shit, like it's always CPU bound. Maybe all the money went into the engine?

The DLSS implementation is horrendous, yeah, fuckloads of smearing even at highest quality. Game feels so sluggish and slow that they made a good decision to not ship it with FG. I can't comprehend it.
Call of Duty 4 was made by like 70 people, took 2 years in development, half-way through they restarted the campaign development and it was considered AAA.

An online only game should never take more than 3 years.
The most popular online games started as mods. Counter Strike, Dota, PUBG. Especially PUBG, that was doing massive numbers in early access.
Even Fortnite battle royale was made in 2 months, in attempt to save the original Fortnite, that was a flop.
>>
>>736669012
My only guess is that as these studios get more and more corporate the administration bloat eclipses the ability to do productive work. Every company has like 3 useless retards who push papers for every 1 guy actually making the company money. I can't imagine how bad it is with the videogame industry when a game studio has 5 dev sites across several continents and a good chunk of them are third worlders to cut costs.
>>
>>736670395
>I can't comprehend it.
It seems most likely that they're just not getting much productivity out of employees. Whether that's because they are lazy, demoralized, entitled...or whether it's because management sucks...is not clear to me. But they did like 5% of the work that they could have done. It's just an efficiency issue. Add to that the extra layers of DEI and HR and there's contention with additional political obstacles that don't help to create a product.
>>
>>736657687
I mean maybe you're right. After spending over a decade of social engineering to transform the videogame industry into this thing it is right now, it would make sense that game journalists care more about this shambling zombie than actual gamers.

that's just classic bungie, they stuck in old mmo development cycles and barely can scrape any content for seasonal updates, they would absolutely not be able to keep up with proper seasonal games like PoE, but in the world where GaaS is mostly gachas that pump out new content on weekly basis they stick out like a rusty nail and simply don't belong. Hubris at it's finest, they have their heads in the sand and ears in the echo chamber, they think of themselves as a fucking nintendo visionaries and no negativity in the dojo, we're cooking new reskin for next content drop. overbloating dev team with dei hires for femoid daycare didn't help much either

Because Bungie, being a western studio, allows them to reinforce their role in the gaming ecosystem. They are able to build relationships and sources just by nature of them having cultural ties(location, language etc). Notice how vitriol Chinese and Korean studios get because they aren't willing to play ball with them? Journos only have power when they are given power by being an entity worth acknowledged. That's why Wukong pissed them off so much
>IGN: Do you have any comments on the sexism allegations we made up?
>Game Science: Fuck you, no we don't
No western studio would be caught doing that kind of PR.
Japan is in this weird place where the actual devs are shielded off just like Korean/Chinese devs but the companies themselves have been infiltrated by LOLcalizers and western branches so they can exert some control on JP game dev like Bandai Namco's recent censoring or Capcom very careful to not cross the safe horny line with their females

>Why did journos get so conjoined to this game anyway?
Marathon being a flop breaks the illusion that game journos still hold any kind of sway in the industry. The truth is that no one gives a fuck about gaming "journalism" anymore. But the journos desperately want to prove that people still give a fuck about what they say because, well, it's their fucking job
the reason companies give them review copies, merch, and fly them out to events is because the gaming companies themselves think that paying journos up is a wise marketing investment. Once companies realize no one gives a shit about them, they'll stop getting free shit, early access, and whatnot
>tl;dr marathon flopping proves that gaming journos and reviewers are a thing of the past, and they are desperately trying to hold onto that, to no avail

Its because the games industry is now mature. Developers are now senior enough to take business and leadership roles, they no longer need pure "suits" for those roles.
Just look at the "brown and bloom" era of gaming. The games were brown and ugly, yes, devs always bitched about corporate meddling, yes, but they also prioritized fun and were marketed and designed to appeal to the people who buy games- because the suits were always reminding everyone that the goal is money and not anything else.
Now we have retarded test monkeys in senior leadership and game design roles, while any decent technical person will all have moved on to make real money elsewhere. These dumb apes think narrative and message are more important then making money. Maybe they are but bitch this is a business and money is far more important then anything else to a business.

There will be a point - maybe this game, maybe some later one - at which the investors will realize that throwing billions of dollars into projects with very low odds of investment return is not a good business practice. It won't be an outright collapse of AAA, but a significant downscaling where the only projects getting made are the safe ones, like sequels to existing major franchises.

Honestly I don't see a vidya crash ever happening. At most there'll be a filtering.
>vidya's basically got basically no startup cost ($100 to get your game listed on Steam. Basically everything you need to make a game is free and open source or has open source alternatives)
>Everyone can work remotely from home so there's no need to rent/buy an office
>Easy to network with other devs to form indie teams
At most, anyone who holds a bullshit redundant position like "diversity team building advisor" will find themselves laid off. All the actual talent can just team up with their fellow laid off coders, sound designers, artists, etc. and just form new indie studios.
>>
>>736674850
Helldivers was never really a pure extraction game, it's an online PvE squad shooter with maybe like 1 or 2 elements that coincidentally align with an extraction game.

it's very funny reading the subreddit and seeing people dogpile on anyone who suggests any kind of change or tweak to the formula. game already had an embarrassingly low player count at launch and in the past month, that number has dropped 75%, but people there act like it's the perfect game and defend every single decision made. sorry, but little tweaks like making cryo archive 24/7 aren't gonna bring people back in droves, they're obviously going to need major changes to have any hope of getting players back. a night version of dire marsh and one new gun isn't gonna cut it next season, especially when the gear wipe pisses off the sweats who have full vaults

ironically one of the only concessions they will make is that the shop options suck because they apparently want to pump money into this sinking ship but can't justify spending money on shitty recolor skins

Helldivers 2 isn't even remotely an extraction shooter. Basically the gist of an extraction shooter is
>pick a loadout from shit in your inventory
>jump into a match against other players as well as NPC enemies
>collect loot whether it be shit to sell or gear then try to extract without getting killed
>if you extract you keep whatever gear and shit you extracted with and can store it away to use in future matches
>if you die you lose everything you were carrying, including all the shit you brought in with you

It's not. Arc Raiders is Helldivers 3 pretending to be an extraction shooter, because of aggression matchmaking, the overwhelming majority of players play it as Helldivers, 3rd person PvE epic spectacle taking down big enemies, and a social hub. Other extraction shooters play more like DayZ or a battle royale.

Beyond political agendas, the most common thread is that Sony paid them to cheerlead for this game. Between their own literally historical rapid failure of Concord and witnessing Highguard quickly die out too soon after despite a relatively strong opening playerbase, they realized Marathon was also destined to be in deep shit. That's why they begged journos to not review it for a month after release and why they've been aggressively paying influencers to tell everyone about how it's le epic hardcore gamersauce.

With what a huge bust Bungie's consultancy has been for Sony's desire to lean heavily into GaaS, they both NEED this game to not fizzle out embarrassingly. Sony because they finally eke out ONE win with their Bungie purchase, and Bungie because they're increasingly liable to get dissolved/absorbed (they're not a Playstation Studio, remember).
>>
>>736657640
>people write it off because why would they invest their time in an online game with player numbers that signal imminent and unceremonious execution by its financial backers, which only leads to even lower player numbers
I mean, even without Player Count numbers it'd be the same. The industry at the moment is chasing whales when before you could buy a game, host a server for 25-30+ years, and own it forever (Quake 1-3).

how is it "sabotage", the game is already dying. if a pve mode even got them just 10k sales, that's probably 10k more sales than they're gonna get in the current state

people mad at any mention of pve talk about it like it's gonna split the playerbase, which is very funny because 1) that's an admission that a large number of people would rather play pve and 2) they have no problem with splitting the playerbase in multiple queues when it comes to adding duo queue and making ranked/cryo happen more often.

What's even funnier about that is, even after they reviewed it at that later date and glazed the fuck out of it, those reviews did approximately nothing to change player counts or reverse the downward trend. There wasn't a bump. There wasn't a plateau. The reviews simply did nothing.

It's all marketing, and the game had terrible marketing. It had one notable plagiarism scandal, then Bungie did nothing to spin the story positively despite resolving it. At the current trend of losing 2,000-4,000 players a day and current peak of 20,000, it's got a maximum of about 3 weeks left.

WOW, no spreadsheet needed. Just SteamDB and logic!

>>
>>736676168
yeah it really was a crazy decision. you want every publication talking about your game at the same time at release to build buzz. instead, bungie has all of these publications releasing reviews at random intervals throughout the first month along with a bunch of articles about the game dying. if you're some normie who hadn't heard of the game til last week when their favorite publication gave it a 9/10 review, they're gonna google the name and see a bunch of articles about it dying already and then decide to not jump on that sinking ship

or, conversely, they'll actually buy the game and get fucking stomped because joining at this stage of the season in a game with no skill based matchmaking is going to be a nightmare
>>
>>736676231
Last week that resulted in a 10% bump and it flattened the next day. Easter weekend was bad for player numbers. Modeling the trend as it is, losses of about 3.2% day on day and some new content coming out over the next month I've got an estimated 10,000 CCU. Zero would be a severe drop off and we're drifting into the phase where only the most committed people are still playing. This cohort is notoriously stubborn about quitting. But the vault wipe in June might just do it.

I get it, games journalists are terrible at video games. Remember that one guy playing Cuphead? Let’s ignore the fact that games journalists regularly beat entire games in a far shorter timespan than regular people who don’t have deadlines to meet. Turn a blind eye to the fact that they don’t have a single guide to help them beat a difficult boss or access an area with some abstruse entry method like drinking poison that kills you at any other time. Forget about the fact they beat them before the patches arrive to make the game easier.

They also hate video games, and chose to cover this beat because they want to destroy the entire industry. It doesn’t matter that wages are low across the sector and crunch is rife, especially when reviewing hundred-hour games with bafflingly tight turnarounds. They hate video games, and can’t wait to tear them down.

The myth that games journalists not only suck at video games, but also actively hate the medium, is one that I’ve never understood.

I am fairly convinced that all of that goon-posting and all of that goon art was commissioned by Bungie themselves.

Extracting a few times with loot isn't hard, you can bash your head against it a while and make it. Now doing the vaults is another story and way slower.

i wrote articles for a small xbox magazine. we had to play 5-10 hours of a game to review it. we had a list of buzzwords we had to use 5-10 times for SEO as well as some backlinks. we were strongly discouraged from giving poor scores. if we gave a game an unfavourable score, the editor would change it.

Groups only. Progress minimum. Gear minimum, as in you have to risk some of your stash to even enter. And designed to be a fuck you in the ass blender. You can't just skulk around picking up scraps and sneaking off to an extract without luck. The turbosweats will prevent you from accessing any of the exits, not to loot you but just to make sure you lose the shit you came in with.

The industry bent over backwards for journos crying about muh sexualizationz and took all my favorite games away from me. And then when one single game that ever so slightly tried to bring that back (Stellar Blade) was coming out every journo did everything in their (very weak nowadays) power to try and deplatform the game or even get Sony to try and cancel it.
I'm absolutely here for the foot being on the other side and watching journoshits games all get taken away just like mine did.

To be fair from my experience in single player analogues this sounds like the kind of mode/area that’s a reason to use all the shit you’ve been hoarding. And this is to keep people from just spamming entries with no kit to try and get a lucky pickoff on someone who’s kitted out.

Yes and no. It has massive auto aim and bullet magnetisim, so it's very low twitch skill. It's higher on setting up positions.

The hardcore side is how unforgiving gameplay is. Super short TTK. No fast respawns. Missions and contracts that are incredibly hard and don't flow into normal gameplay naturally but are required for meta progress. Catering to streamers and people who play longer, who then go around abusing the noobs, causing the noobs to lose progress

It's completely expected that the casuals have bailed.

Trans at Bungie.
Latinx at Bungie.

I've listened to various game journalism for more than 20 years. They don't care about *games* they care about *game culture*. They want to be able to talk to girls about their job and tell their parents they are successful.

Helldivers 2 has “extraction shooter” elements but there isn’t anything to collect in the game besides “Samples” which you do need to fully upgrade your stuff, but once you do extracting is pointless, save for one or two mission types where you must extract with a Hard Drive or something and that’s what the mission is but Helldivers is nothing like extracting and collecting and bullshit garbage like Marathon or Arc raiders, you just can optionally extract if you want extra XP or need samples. But I wouldn’t call Helldivers an extraction shooter at all. It’s more like a procedurally generated left4dead but with a big open map, or something, except l4d you do need to extract to win so whatever Idk Helldivers is a really unique game.

I'm too busy playing Brigador, honestly. I don't have time for the live service grind anymore. It's exhausting and unfun to keep up with, so I'd rather just play a game I can turn off when I need to focus on the real world without feeling like I'm missing out on another FOMO thing. I paid for Project Zomboid ONCE and I got a full game I could dump as much time or as little as I wanted, whenever I wanted with an experience I could customize to my preferences. Then they updated to the latest build, I can still access the old build and I've got basically a whole new game to experience on my own terms. None of my old single player games are going anywhere either. Even an MMO like WoW I can just go find a private server to play on.

I will only concede the possibility of you being correct if you define in clear and objective terms what a game dev being woke even means, because I'm pretty confident every person placing the accusation has a completely different working definition of what it means for a _company_ to be woke
Hell, is it even permanent?
If a company releases a game starring a tranny, how long do they stay woke for? It definitely can't be "forever", but how much of the ship has to be replaced before you decide the label is or isn't warranted? Is Nintendo woke because of birdo being a tranny in the 90s? Have they stopped being woke? Was capcom woke because of poison, but only in the US? Did they stop being woke and then become woke again?

Is 4chan woke? We literally have a fucking LGBT board. Is it the management, the user base, the CEO? what the fuck does it mean for a business entity to be "woke", anon?

The critics don't play shit like this deeply enough to understand a goddam thing about it, either good or bad, and I'm betting my excess gold shields in my inventory that you have nothing interesting or intelligent to say about any of this shit anyways, which is why you're going to fan fiction.

>We don’t know how much Marathon cost to develop
Marathon/Bungie costed Sony at least 3.6 billion dollars.
>or what Sony Interactive Entertainment, which owns Bungie and is publishing the game, wants from it
At least 3.6 billion dollars.

Blizzard still does whatever they can where they have a captive audience, i.e. the humiliation ritual that is WoW.

They used to be, not anymore

If the game is doing so well, why do websites keep making articles about how great it is and definitely not dying every single week? Eve games like eldenring or skyrim dropped from the news after like 2.

Journotrash are desperate to prove they can still jew people into doing what they want because if they can't nobody will pay them. They can't, so they are furious at us for not getting jewed.

If they wanted to create worlds that inspire friendship they should have made Arc Raiders instead of a hardcore PvP extraction game

The moment he started saying 'Actually, I think marathon is in trouble', he became a chud for going against the journalist orthodoxy around what a BLAST the game is.

>HE'S USING THE FACIST POWER OF MATH AND NUMBERS.
>>
When you boot up the game for the first time, it asks you to join their Discord.

What the fuck?! In a game where pre-match comms and strats is that important, is it really asking too much for the devs to put those tools in-game?? Instead of shunting people off to groomer minefield Discord? This is worse than devs hosting their official forums on Reddit.
