I think the whole rural vibe contributes more than we may have noticed as kids. From the herbal medicines and Kurts Aprikot pokeballs to the Eevee sisters and the whole towers business Johto and its far more wooded and winding paths is keeping its past alive in a way Kanto kind of steamrolled over and forgot. So moments of modernity like the Goldenrod Radio station and the Train standout a lot more.As an adult i can look back at all the games and go "Oh Diamond and Pearl was like that because it represents the cold, rocky parts of Hokkaido and thats why there are not-ainu in Legends Arceus" and its good most of the time but i feel G/S has the vibes down great.But i also grew up in the english countryside where history is a bit more preserved so maybe that made it resonate a bit more than R/B's ultra clean and modern -for its time- setting.
