I don’t know who any of these people are since I usually don’t watch anything made after the early 2000s. I’m willing to give this a shot, but, are any of them black? Won’t watch it even a single one is. Elden Ring didn’t have any, and I would expect an accurate film version to stick to that.

Movie adaptations of games always suck. Soulless realtranny trite that superficially references only the most basic of lore details or gameplay mechanics as a way of jangling keys infront of the "target audience". Hey, remember this location? Know this meme? Do you recognise this cool guy in cool armour making a cool pose? Remember when X character said *iconic phrase*?

Garland has worked with Cailee Spaeny, Sonoya Mizuno and Nick Offerman on several projects already, and Emma Laird was in 28 Years Later The Bone Temple, which he wrote. I don't recall any of the rest being in any of his works but there's plenty of good names there, so it's a decent cast for a video game adaptation.

Happy for Peter Serafinowicz since he's been a long-time fan. I've almost entirely stopped holding out hope for modern movies though, vidya adaptations least of all. What the fuck are you talking about? A "slice of life journey through a dark land without much plot" is literally a close description of Civil War, Garland's previous film from A24. Warfare, his film from last year, also is just a small scale contained war film with no elaborate plot.

Elden ring had a ton of story and lore. Do you people take pride in being this unable to discern basic information while then turning around and parading how proud you are for being retarded? Are you all just constantly joking like a meme? Because I doubt it. I think you fundamentally do think this is true and that there is no story. No you don't need some retard gay ass nigger like Vaati. You just need basic fucking intelligence and a want to learn and understand the world and actions happening around you. Dark souls and elden ring have fantastic stories and motifs. Bloodborne especially too. Ds2 and 3 and cobbled together assets but still have a basic a b c through z understanding of events and plot wet in place. I swear you people take pride in being stupid. I actually wish people would kill people like you off, straight up. You're a nigger even if you're white BTW. I saw him in Fargo Season 4 recently, he was pretty good with a deadpan depressive vibe that would fit well in the Elden Ring world.

I've never seen Nick Offerman in anything where he wasn't comic relief, perhaps he'll play something like that failed sorcerer outside the academy.

Whisaw does Paddington. Which makes him pretty much perfect for a From Software adaptation really, they like their soft British voices.

that's Sonoya Mizuno, also in the cast list, he seems to like her a lot. She was in Ex Machina, and small roles in Annihilation and Civil War. Not a great actress but has a good look that can be made very striking on film. That is besides the point. Ron, the character, exists in hyperreality. Nick Offerman entering into that is a reflection of his ethos as an actor. Ergo, Nick Offerman can be SEEN and be responded to as a "homosexual actor" without being homosexual himself. This makes the crust-posting valid as that is his willfull reputational attempt at displaying his ethos.

Because Ron Swanson, the fictional character, does not exist in reality. You can post anything about the character, including shipping him into being gay despite the show not showing him as such. Now do you understand it? That's as concrete as an example as I can make it, relating it to shipping of all things. This is a counterargument to an anon claiming that
>being gay in one popular series
>you cannot perceive him as such
When I say THAT is the most immediate way to perceive actors, especially when they go out of their way to display their ethos as such.

>>737326360
Ian has distinctly said, I don't remember where, that as a consummate professional actor he takes his personal ethos out of the roles he plays. Same goes for Kevin Conroy when he plays Batman. You can extrapolate beyond that.

I will "perceive" him from his roles in Civil War and Devs, both by Alex Garland who is directing this, in both of which he played serious villains. Given they're going to be more relevant than a tweet of him snarking at someone for misusing a character he played in a comedy show.
>>

Garland is actually a big Dark Souls and Elden Ring fan, he's been talking about them for years. Dark Souls II was shown being played in the background by a character in Devs for instance. I imagine if he's writing as well as directing then he was part of getting this off the ground rather than just being hired for the project.

And interestingly he talked directly about how a game like Dark Souls would be hard to adapt into a film because they're very rooted in being video games and being very abstract and loose plotwise
https://www.gamespot.com/articles/devs-creator-alex-garland-on-why-video-game-movies/1100-6478904/
>As for Garland's other favorite franchise, Dark Souls, he's less confident about the potential for an adaptation, largely because of the mood and ambiance the Souls games tend to have. "The Dark Souls games seem to have this embedded poetry in them. You'll be wandering around and find some weird bit of dialogue with some sort of broken song sat with a bit of armor outside a doorway and it feels like you've drifted into some existential dream. That's what I really love about Dark Souls. These spaces are so imaginative and they seem to flow into each other and flow out of each other [...] I can't imagine how that would [be adapted]. The quality that makes Dark Souls special is probably unique to video games."
So I guess he's worked out what he thinks is a way to make it work. Civil War kind of had this a bit, in that rather than being an elaborate plot, it was more like a series of small vignettes as the characters travelled across the country. That'd work for Elden Ring.
>>
>>737326996
As far as I can tell, you're just way overly fixated on a dumb forced /tv/ meme and try way too hard to bring it up even when clearly not relevant at all.
>>
>>737327016
> you're decrying a straight man for playing a gay character and ron swanson didn't reply to the guy on twitter the actor did, and he just pointed out that using a faggot-friendly character like ron to shit on gays is stupid
My point is that the thing you are hinging it on, character canon, does not exist. The Ron Swanson being used in that specific gif is a meme template. Nick, the actor, took offense to that enough to publicly denounce it. So yes I would say that homosexuality is part of his ethos and can be judged accordingly. "Stupidity" or how you are using it in this context is a nothing word that just means "this interpretation of the character is OOC" .

>>737327048
That is not in reference to Magneto. That is in reference of him PERSONALLY using mutant powers to hurt homophobes. He is not relaying it via Magneto. That is another discussion if he did.
>>
>>737327294
I don't even post about the Last of Us show, but I will defend and argue for the use of memes and their memetic influence in board culture. They are wholly independent phenomena from the source which is an even more independent phenomena of the actors that play them and an independent phenomena of the writers then so on and so forth with how atomized it gets.
>>
But Elden Ring has no story and the world is dead?
>>
>>737327574
Yes there have definitely not been any films based in dying broken worlds.

>>737327250
Yeah, the first Resident Evil was an inspiration for making 28 days later

I know he plays videogames but I really want to know why someone like him is just now thinking about making a videogame movie and out of all the games he chose Elden Ring, it's such a weird choice, I never thought that any of the souls games would work as a movie at all much less the one that's open world
It's why I'm interested in this movie, really want to know what he does, when I like Garland's movies I really like them but when I don't I really don't

But it does apply to Ian, it's just applied differently. I think the confusion you're getting is the degree of compartmentalization between the roles are from the actor.

>Nick Offerman tweeting something gay related once means that homosexuality is part of his ethos
That's of a single incident. I think it's easier if I say that he is a gay "ally" so to speak. I think that's the right word and where he will defend his characters in that viewpoint, based on allyship, is what I'm communicating to you. He cannot allow his characters to portrayed to betraying his "allyship" because he finds it as a personal attack on his beliefs. Now do you get it?

Her accent in Devs was American (allegedly), I don't even know what it is in House of the Dragon, it's like Patois + Chinese + Something. Then you see her in a British film and her real accent is just a regular English one. She probably should have just been handwaved as being from England in Devs and had her speak in her natural accent.

Nah, Garland has been talking about video games and Dark Souls in interviews for years. This is from six years ago, before Elden Ring even came out.

He's mentioned Resident Evil influencing 28 Days Later as well, that film is from 2002.

Despite the guy's reputation, I'm really cautious about this because Elden Ring is not his usual repertoire. Even without the video game adaptation angle, the fantasy genre isn't even his thing when all he used to make was sci-fi and thrillers, not to mention the big budget.

To get Bandai to notice him, as with their jewishness and DaS's popularity I'm sure this is far from their first attempt to make a Souls game movie. They've probably had talks about it behind closed doors for years and his previous mentions were to get them to pick him as a director. Directed by, yes. Written by Garland, they also had the same partnership on Sunshine and 28 Years Later recently. Boyle had previously adapted Garland's novel The Beach as a film.
Garland was an author and screenwriter up until the 2010s when he moved into directing as well, with Dredd (officially directed by Pete Travis, but an open secret that Garland wound up unofficially being the actual director) and Ex Machina.

>I imagine if he's writing as well as directing then he was part of getting this off the ground rather than just being hired for the project.
It was him who pursued it
>director Alex Garland privately shared his experience playing Elden Ring with A24's head of film, Noah Sacco, impressing him to support pursuing an adaptation. After Garland wrote a 160-page spec script, accompanied by forty pages of imagery, Sacco flew him to Japan to sign a deal with FromSoftware, the developer of the game
Miyazaki said previously he was open to adaptations of Elden Ring to other medium as long as it was a strong partner, so I'm guessing Garland being a fan saw an opening to jump in and get A24 on board. They produced his last three films, and Ex Machina, his directorial debut.

ironically they had Boyle shoot parts of the opening and it makes sense when it's the only part of the movie that actually feel like it's a sequel to 28 Days. I had reservations about Years because I didn't know if Boyle/Garland still had it in them but yeah, I loved it. Glad the series is back and it wasn't just a generic phoned in zombie movie. Even The Bone Temple was surprisingly good, considering it could have easily went the 28 Weeks later route with a different director.

Such a shame it plummets off a cliff after the opening, the actual main plot is too dumb and lacks any of the atmosphere from 28 Days Later. Apparently Boyle contributed some directing on the opening sequence, that checks out. It does feel like it's from a different, better film.

The film was very clearly about modern civil wars that happen all over the world, how you document it, how you experience it as a regular citizen, etc, but placing it in a familiar setting to remove the abstract nature of "far away wartorn place" when you hear of civil wars raging in Sudan or other places, and force the viewer to actually look at it. But you had all these goofballs watching and it and complaining there wasn't a 10 minute infodump of "worldbuilding" (which they seem to think is just map painting) backstory on the war, like what does that matter? What would it change about the setting? It's the same place for the characters we're following regardless, and their job doesn't change. Just dropping us in at the start was the right choice.

Not to mention the dopes like "why wasn't it nonstop action with armies charging at each other", like it was fuckin' Braveheart.

It's kinda funny that this entire film project has been completely in the dark. From the early spotty rumors of Garland directing, to the talk of names being cast, then the video of a set being built, and now finally news of production starting and more casting, absolutely none of it has had any official announcement from From Software, A24, or Garland himself, just reports from industry news. Normally you'd get a big official early announcement at a show that a film project is beginning development, or a teaser trailer announcing in advance. Nope, absolute radio silence from everyone involved.
>>
While I absolutely HATED 28 Years Later, I thought a lot of that movie was very "videogamey", like the worldbuilding, the fat slug zombies reminded me of something out of a Dark Souls game unironically

I know Garland just wrote that but still, if he can make you "feel" the game, from the essence of the game to how you feel when playing the game, that's what really matters and all a videogame movie should be which is why many don't succeed at this, as it's really hard to translate that part of a videogame to a movie

I don't actually know because I haven't looked, but did Garland even mention Elden Ring before saying he'd gone to NG+7 or whatever he said during the press releases? The PR nightmare of people not being mega super ultra fans of whatever property for video game movies seems like they're required to say it regardless of how true it is.
I think Garland is a fine director but Men was genuinely quite bad and Warfare/Civil War were okay; he's clearly more at home in smaller scale sci fi productions so I have no idea how well that set of skills is going to translate to a vague fantasy epic like Elden Ring.
Being a good director doesn't mean you're good at everything related to making films. I love David Lynch's movies but Dune was fucking terrible.
>>
>>737320551

>>
>>737348761
why? it's actually got a decent director who's talked about admiring the style of From games for a while, the cast is good and not just marquee grabbing, and it's not from a blockbuster type studio that would want to make it more family friendly and commercial. It seems to have about as good a chance to be decent as it could have gotten.
>>
>>737349275

>>
>>737349419
Interesting. I genuinely don't know which is why I was asking. It's obviously preferable for someone to not hate what they're making, but being a fan doesn't necessarily translate to being a good fit, either.

I don't really care for video game adaptations and to be honest I don't think there's ever been a good one. They're marginally better now but they mostly come across as glorified fanservice rather than intentional movies. Not my thing.

Maybe Garland or that other dude can make something good but the trend has been bad for almost 40 years now.
>>
>>737349275
>but did Garland even mention Elden Ring before saying he'd gone to NG+7 or whatever he said during the press releases?
Maybe not Elden Ring specifically but he's gone on record talking about how the Souls games are some of his favorite video games currently out as far back as like 2019. He has also talked about how Resident Evil inspired him to write 28 Days Later and it's still one of the best "modern" zombie movies we've gotten IMO. I don't think someone who wasn't a fan of the games before the huge ER popularity spike would be talking about them in an interview.

I can't speak on Lynch's Dune but I have to say that while I didn't really like Men either, Warfare/Civil War were alright but what he shines at doing is creating very atmospheric movies with great world building and that sounds like a great person to direct a Souls movie. Doesn't seem like some RE Cregger "throw the IP onto a random script" deal either
>>
>>737322239
Off topic but did we ever find out who the snake was between Pate and Creighton?
>>
>>737349610
That makes sense. It's pretty clear he's going to make an honest effort towards the project (is he just directing or writing and directing like he often does?) but I still wouldn't say that's necessarily going to translate to something like Elden Ring. You can adapt almost anything to a movie format, Souls games included, but at some point you get into a question of why, exactly, Elden Ring and not just an original thing if you're going to bend it to the point where it's different enough.
And if you're going to just adapt it 1:1 then it's an exercise in futility. I never actually want things to be bad but I just don't see it for Elden Ring.

I would agree that Men does not pan out into a great film, but it's not for any reason that I'd be concerned about for Elden Ring. It looked nice, it sounded nice, and it was memorably gruesome with some strong atmosphere. Where it failed was the screenplay which seemed underdeveloped and needed another few drafts, it introduces a hodgepodge of psychological and mythological ideas but they don't really amount to anything concrete and it seemed like he wasn't sure what it added up to so the third act winds up just relying on some gross body horror then a quick ending.

With all that said, I don't think that is too big an issue with Elden Ring, because where it was strong, are areas that would also be strong in an Elden Ring film, except for the action element, which going by Dredd, Civil War and Warfare, may turn out just fine as well, those films had really great sound design and editing for action. Likewise for Annihilation and Civil War, I'd look at them and see points in favor of him trying Elden Ring, since I think a film needs to nail a dreamy, eerie atmosphere, with off-kilter characters, as well as not spend loads of time just info dumping, but simply throw the viewer into the world and let it speak for itself. Civil War was good at that, just having the characters go across the wartorn country and experience different little stories and vignettes, rather than concentrating on plot, which is not where a good Elden Ring film is gonna be found if you ask me (and not necessarily where a good Garland film is found either)

Rewatched it recently for the first time in many years, it holds up incredibly well, even the grainy ass digital camera gives it a great raw look. I was a little too young in 2002 to appreciate what a breath of fresh air it must have been after the super slick teen horror flicks of the late 90s ran their course (this and The Ring in 2002 was definitely a shot in the arm the genre needed in the US).

Is he writing the script?
And perhaps with a cast that large it will be a series of vignettes; working with A24 (which produces all kinds of stuff, good and bad, arty and mundane) is the weird bit because they don't do big budget films. Garland does sometimes but Civil War was a 20 million dollar film. Fantasy tends to bloat budgets of even small scale series and still they often had pretty bad set/costume design because we've lost the art of Peter Jackson's autism.
So it could be a weirdly low key, low stakes vignette series set in the Elden Ring universe but you still run into the problem of why you're doing that rather than something original.

Or just making big, bombastic and having it cycle through the important people in the setting like you're speedrunning Too Many Cooks at which point it will be geuinely, immutably bad and you can't really rule out that as a possibility.
>>
>>737349852
Writing AND directing, apparently after finishing his script he personally gave it to Miyazaki and got his approval on it. Could be bullshit but it seems like he's doing everything he can to make it at least somewhat faithful to the games. I can understand the "why" angle but I think he is a talented script writer/director with an eye for visuals, if nothing else. It'll be interesting to see what the finished up product ends up looking like. At worst you'll have a "passable" fantasy film and I can't complain about that.

>>737350109
>even the grainy ass digital camera gives it a great raw look
This is honestly what makes the movie for me. It avoids feeling like an overproduced hollywood blockbuster and instead someones personal handycam footage without bleeding into the "found footage" style. Definitely one of those movies where you appreciate it more the older you get. Some of the shots feel like they're straight out of a fixed camera angle horror game, and when you read about how Garland was inspired by RE to write the script, it makes sense.

He is. But that's his forte, hit or miss, his background is in writing novels and screenplays, he only got into directing as well with Ex Machina in 2014 (and unofficially with Dredd in 2012 which he isn't credited as director for but it's apparently an open secret he was pretty much the real director on).

Some have pointed to David Lowery's adaptation of The Green Knight from 2021 as a blueprint for how to adapt From Software's style, and I can see the merits there, though that one might be a little too esoteric and artsy, after all, Dark Souls and Elden Ring are still action-adventure games, you do need some kind of strong action element, so it can't just be slow weird fantasy visuals. We'll see what his approach is. I would hope he marries his style of dreamy, uncanny atmospheres (found in Devs, Annihilation and Men), with his pechant for throwing you in the deep end and just depicting a single tale in an existing world that's not delved into too much (like Civil War and Warfare). The former in particular has a lot of little vignettes in it that would work with Elden Ring NPCs, weird little fragments of stories you get a partial impression of then move on.

It it goes wrong, it'll likely be in trying to do too much of the game and being choppy or overstuffed, or from not being able to realize the fantasy visuals. It has a better chance then stuff like Mario which was clearly conceived to be basic kids flick stuff from the start, or stuff like Zelda which is a hard game to adapt to film while keeping it feeling like Zelda, and not just a generic fantasy film, tonally I expect that film to not quite capture Zelda's slight quirkiness and be a bit dry even if it has the costumes pretty accurate by the looks of it. On the stance of strangeness, I'd say some of Garland's films do have unexpected tones, 28 Years Later and The Bone Temple just recently have some oddball stuff that was surprising, in a good way for me, but maybe not for everyone.
>>
>>737350686
Look at Capcom's output:

not including the original RE movies because they're not part of this trend, but

They have animations for Monster Hunter and Dragon's Dogma which are both pretty bad
You have the Monster Hunter movie itself which is really bad
A bunch of newer Resident Evil stuff that is pretty bad.

I have no idea about the Sekiro anime but the Bloodborne one is going to be really bad. You should look up the company, Lyrical Media, who is handling the animation and what they've made so far. A big hint is that it's not animation.

So I think we'll see pretty soon here if the trend from Secret Level continues (it was bad) or if they can pull out of the nosedive.
>>
>>737349057
I'm still wary because despite Garland working on this, this is not the typical subject matter he tends to work with. He mostly deals with thrillers and sci-fi in a personal, more enclosed drama kind of way. Elden Ring seems bigger than life in comparison to his repertoire.

I've seen the Green Knight comparisons too and I see the vague relevance but I don't think that's the right kind of atmosphere. Even in Elden Ring which finally eschews the 'no music outside of bosses' thing doesn't really much on ambient music for its atmosphere. Films do. They do it a lot and both the Green Knight and Garland engage with this

Unless you're Joel and Ethan Coen you're not going to make a movie with virtually no music for something that, according the internet, is going to cost 'well over 100 million dollars.' It's a weird fixation, I suppose, but it's one of those things I can see being sanded away because it needs to make a lot of money back.
And while I appreciate the odd tonal stuff of the past two 28 movies he did not direct them. Elden Ring, like all the Souls games, have a very distinct type of mild humor to them that I think does not mesh well at all with big budget western audiences. It will seem 'too japanese' to a lot of people including producers, I think. It would be easier to excise it than make it hollwood 'humorous' but it's still something that would be lost.

It's one of those things where we know Garland is involved but it has a host of people involved that don't care about any of this and are there to just make sure the ROI is being taken care of.
>>
>>737349371
I mean good for a video game adaptation still basically means not terrible
Nobody is writing articles about the quality of the writing in the minecraft or mario movies. Previous adult ones have a terrible track record because they focus on satisfying fans and trying to somehow emulate the game(one doom movie had some retarded fps first person pov idea iirc) so they never just make a good movie

Maybe that all changes now that markaplier has Hollywood scared. Doubt it tho.

A24 has a pretty vast catalog of movies, it's so weird watching people get hung up on them being an "artsy" studio when they've done a number of horror films or all of the Safdie stuff that borderlines on being "thriller" movies with how tense and in your face they can be.

he's not a JOKE character and his oddities are played straight but there's a kind of warm humor to him despite what he is
he's the game's Catarina stand in, obviously, but I have doubts that hollywood writers can understand the distinction of someone being a comic relief character and someone who's just kind of funny but part of the world,
