I've been expecting this game for several years, but the demo really killed my interest.
The gameplay is atrocious. The game looks like a GB Zelda game and should play as such. Instead, it's a 2D souls slop: you have to constantly dodge everything (dig), the basic enemies take too much hits to be remotely fun and they mercilessly chase the player. It's not even hard, simply not fun at all. So much wasted potential.

The problem I think is that the game doesn't know what it wants to be. Clearly there's a castlevania vibe to it and castlevania inspired games had large explorable worlds already. Here we are served a game that tries to be all about movement in 2D plane without diagonals. Which is frustrating and confusing.

I think reworking the game from grounds up and going for more SNES/GBA look, extending the play field would have benefited it greatly. Because right now they're struggling to make it work right.

A reminder that on the 14th of June 2024, almost two years ago, Yacht Club Games announced a standalone deluxe version of Shovel Knight: Shovel of Hope that adds some new features to the original campaign and none of the other ones, including rewind and multiplayer, features that could arguably just be added to the original game through an update.
After the announcement, a second trailer dropped on the 27th of August the same year, revealing that the game would release sometime in 2025. We are now a quarter of the way through 2026, and since that second trailer dropped, the only update has been the release date being unceremoniously changed from 2025 to TBA.

I'm still really excited for the game.
I was a bit surprised when it didn't feel like Zelda almost at all despite its aesthetics.
But though the demo had surprisingly little exploration or build variety, the demo kind of implied and suggested that the full game would have a decent amount of it.
And gameplay wise, it really it really was satisfying to play. A tight top-down 2D-soulslike.

And I mean. Yacht Club haven't disappointed me yet.
I'm willing to bet the full game can deliver. But we'll see. It does need to become real before anyone can tell.
