Kojima is the ONLY person in the video game industry who is able to do this
>>
Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is not a video game. It's Kojima's $100 million excuse to hang out with Hollywood celebrities while you hold the left stick forward for 40 hours. Almost every location has a flat path straight to it. You can make any delivery by holding forward or driving a truck. Congratulations, you just experienced "gameplay." The game throws numerous tools at you that you absolutely never need. It's like being handed a Swiss Army knife to eat soup — the equivalent of playing Doom where enemies fall down without you ever pulling the trigger.

But the crown jewel — the absolute proof Kojima doesn't make games — is the "Pretend You Won" button. Die to a boss and the game literally asks if you want to skip it. Pick it and you get a SLIDESHOW of how the fight would have played out. The results screen reads "Imaginary Victory" with a drawing of Sam sleeping. Even the protagonist doesn't care. No game should let you skip core combat. That's not accessibility — that's a confession. That's Kojima saying "gameplay doesn't matter, just watch my movie." The single greatest evidence he's NOT a game developer — just a film director accidentally given a dev kit instead of a camera.

Did this cinematic walking screensaver win GOTY? NO. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 — an actual VIDEO GAME with actual GAMEPLAY — bodied Kojima's celebrity meet-and-greet simulator at The Game Awards, Golden Joysticks, DICE, and GDC, racking up 291 GOTY wins in 2025.

But don't worry — his own game taught us the solution. He can just Pretend He Won. Skip the awards, read a little slideshow that says "Kojima won GOTY" with a picture of him sleeping. Imaginary Victory. Kojima — put down the controller. Pick up the camera. Stick to making movies. You clearly want to. You were never one of us.

the Imagine You Won button is based. It is clearly stating that everyone who presses the button did not actually win the game, which is at least better than a simple "Story Mode" or "Easy Mode" which glosses over that fact. But I do agree that DS2 gameplay isn't designed well. The game is fully depended on environmental design and they didn't do a good job. The characters in Death Stranding aren't as memorable or likable as the characters from Metal Gear series, and the Hollywood actors are a distraction.
>>
>>737469930
The game could have used customizable difficulty with all sorts of toggles and sliders. The game's not particularly hard, even on TTW, and relies a lot on you to make your own fun. So let us. You should be able to turn up the frequency of all the weather effects and natural disasters but neuter combat difficulty if all you want to do is deliver cargo. Or keep combat hard as balls, but increase respawn time so the reward for clearing a camp is a safe route that lasts for a while.

After 250 hours in DS2 on PC I went back to the first one, initially planning to only do the first area im now at 50 hours.
It is really easy to ruin this game for yourself. If you arent optimally building roads, or have an optimal zip line route, or do too many single standard orders eventually the back and fourth for them grates.
I feel like what you should focus on is when you meet a new person is always do their retrieval missions first, and if youve just unlocked a bunch of people near a mule camp, just take out the camp and get all their missions for that camp done at the one time.
And dont bother with standard orders that are to people close by, its only really worth doing long range missions to get people to 5 stars.
The sheer amount of orders some people have is fucking stupid though. I did like 12 deliveries for the Junk Dealer and the game is like 12/25!
and some Distro Centers have 30 fucking missions
The one thing I do love in this though is the fact that the mules are out patrolling huge sections of the map, and you feel pressured when you get caught in those first hours. DS2 confining them to bases just feels more like MGSV
>>
>>737472046
FYI the tranq rifles work on MGS rules. You can just body shot everyone and wait a minute for them to fall asleep in sequence. It's sometimes more useful to do this than go for headshots.

I forgot about this part of DS1. It makes me think of the timefall farm. That location was cool, but made little sense. If half the farm is occupied by the terrorists, don't they fuck with the farm owners? For such a huge farm, why doesn't it have roads to the cities that it surely feeds? I can't fathom porters doing all the deliveries on foot.

Higgs has one goal. He a reason to let Sam get to the end, because he wants Sam to connect everyone to facilitate his own goal. Everything up to the end is just him doing what you said, trolling for lols. Presumably that's all Amelie lets him do. When fighting Sam for real on the beach, Higgs is limited to just using his gun and teleportation, which isn't enough to stop Sam.

The only actual threat to everyone's plans in DS1 was Cliff Unger. He could have trapped Sam on one of his beaches, killed Deadman and/or Die-Hardman, and possibly even killed Amelie (though I'm not sure if that's possible).

You're not seeing its potential. What if cargo content not getting damaged by rain could be turned off?
What if many features you find too helpful were optional? With APAS enhancements the game could be made impossible to play and each player would activate the skills he wants to bring his experience to a comfortable level.
Personally i don't activate all my APAS skills, just because they're there doesn't mean i have to fill in the skill tree.

The purpose of this skill tree was not just to facilitate gameplay but also to sever the connection between our idea of a challenge and the dev's.
>do this and you will never have beaten the game

To forsake our sweat and our immersion is out of the question. So we'll seek out game mechanics which respect our gaming values, make up challenges, raise builds, tweak and customize. We would rather strive to achieve the impossible while remaining in control of our play experience. To struggle on in search of verisimilitude and perfect game balance.
>you can't be your own game dev

Can't we? The APAS enhancement system allows us to tune the difficulty like never before. So the playerbase will continue to make use of APAS, and embrace the true potential of integrated modding. No one wants to go back to the dark days of difficulty settings.
>it's true what you said about customizing. there are players who don't activate the auto cargo binding and use their rope instead
The psychological sensation of playing the rules to achieve victory is something we all crave. That unity of restriction and creativity. The APAS enhancement system might still wind up an evolutionary dead end but even in this possibility, i see hope. And now, i'm going to deactivate the exo-skeleton balance assist skill. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_bzBxNx1hI&t=233s

The squid and the three dogs? I think you can just run past them though I think it's in your best interest to catch the squid since it's the tutorial for the Pokeball grenade.

I have no idea how the fuck to use that shit on the other bosses, the few times I actually fought them they just die instead of toppling over like the squid did

Thus, two large ammo pouches and 3 large grenade pouches are the best backpack loadout.

Messing up during a BT fight just gets you eaten while Sam acts slowly picks himself up because of anemia. The large ammo pouches give 5 reloads each, which is HUGE for a single machine gun lvl 2. I beat the whale BT mostly by surfing on a half durability hover board while mag dumping into it with a single MG lvl 2 that I brought. Those ammo pouches had my back not just then, but during many bandit camps where I came in with a tranq rifle and just kept sniping everyone with my ability to reload so much. A single climbing anchor pack is more than sufficient to replace the stabilizer for any on foot trip, which are relatively rare since I take the hover board for those.

However, it is clear that with DS1/2 the guy either doesn't like gameplay or just wants to subvert it too much. He needs people who force him to make a VIDEO GAME like MGS. MGS was so good because it combined his great directing with people who were eager to make a great video game. Now it is just yes-men listening to Kojima because he is an 'auteur'.

Finished DS2 yesterday, here are my thoughts.

I liked the map of the first game better.
Theres too much forced combat in DS2.
The story is much worse
Higgs is shit.
The vehicle physics didnt get improved at all. Driving a bike or offroader is still as janky and unfun just like in the first one.
DS2 feels like a retarded addon rather then a full sequel. Honestly the thing you do most of the time, driving, feels like pure dogshit like cmon man. I stopped using the offroader as soon as I unlocked ziplines. Maybe that was La Creatividad's masterplan afterall.

I regret purchasing this game.

>I liked the map of the first game better.
Everyone does. Both Mexico and Australia are too flat and open, outside of areas that you go through once and make up a small part of the maps.

>Theres too much forced combat in DS2.
They basically traded BT areas for bandit camps. I prefered the frequency of BT areas to bandits in DS1.

>The story is much worse. Higgs is shit.
Kojima is good at setting up worlds and providing exposition. He's not so good at building on these worlds in ways that respect the original. Lots of retcons to how things worked and characters. Everything with Lou, and also even Fragile getting young skin again felt like it undermined the first game.

>The vehicle physics didnt get improved at all
It got changed. The ground is smoother and you never get brought to a dead stop by driving over rocks anymore. I felt it made things a little too easy, to be honest.

>I regret purchasing this game.
I pirated. Don't really regret the experience, but I do think it was a worst experience than DS1.

>No it wouldn't prevent shit regarding vehicles
Yeah it would. The slopes in DS2 are also a joke compared to DS1, which not only had steeper gradients and large rocks, but also small rocks underneath the snow that would fuck your momentum up all the time. DS1 had a more foreboding snow area in general. DS2 had so many straight line paths that you could just drive straight up. Like Chronobiologist, lol.

>>
>>737494105
DS2 mountains are more foreboding with an altitude layer of clouds all around it instead of one area of whiteout. Blind navigation is a constant, seemingly navigable mountain passes leading to sheer cliffs on the other side, a low oxygen layer and if you slip it's all the way down without grip gear.
>>
>>737494738
You're a double nigger. Smoke a cig once your life.
>>
>>737495002
Low oxygen was kind of a joke. It's time limit is very forgiving. And much like with batteries, running out is completely mitigated by your stack of biotes.

Cloud layer was cool as fuck. That said, it started to feel fake after a point. Like you always go from clear skies to sudden clouds, so you can never see the whole map from the top like in DS1. The white out mission in DS1 felt more intense to me, mostly because I wasn't driving a truck at the time.
>>
>both games almost 40 hours long
God damn kojima why
>>
>>737495350
The low oxygen is a joke like every other mechanic in the game but it does fuck you over if you linger up there and that can realistically happen, it's not nothing. The mask eats a lot of battery. I got myself in a couple of high altitude binds on Brutal and on Wilder. Plus on foot mountain porting without gear or preparation in DS2 is genuine aids, which is a good thing.

Biotes aren't an argument because they're the solution to everything, they negate all, i only stock chronos and necros.

Indeed weird but hear it out.
Rushing DS2 is beneficial to the narrative, the plot, the story because the scenes are so short and deliver so little information that they need to work together to deliver their narrative payload. Try it and i bet you'll feel it too, the plot becomes more engaging, it's been constructed in a way that doesn't allow wandering off from the beat.

>>
>>737502709
Let's say Tomorrow is currently learning to use her powers one scene at a time in a progression and i take multiple 5h long breaks to do side deliveries, i don't think about Tomorrow for 5 hours, i forget about Tomorrow so each time i come back i'm mentally cut off from the previous event. I broke the narrative because the scenes must mix and build a thread. The heartman plot, the apac plot, rainy, pod, gun, same thing.
In DS1 it wasn't like this, the cutscenes were chunks justifying themselves from their own start to their end.

>However, it is clear that with DS1/2 the guy either doesn't like gameplay or just wants to subvert it too much.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gRDRIyEZM8c

The vast majority of these details involve GAMEPLAY. DS1/2 are far more mechanically dense than the average AAA sludge released these days. But that requires playing the game and most people who hate DS need jingling keys to be entertained.
>>
>>737502387
After 215 hours and 400TTW ranks all offline, I agree. This is going to be the better way to do it. Otherwise the game becomes a slog.
Between each MAIN mission you only get a handful of standard orders. They are drip fed to you. Not just that but there's a lot of moving around from one place to another just to start orders. Not just that but they've also gone overboard with what was present in DS1; orders only appearing after certain other orders had been completed.
Theres 40 or 50 orders in Mexico and they are the easiest ones. The other 350 in Australia felt very stngily handed out. Its like they REALLY REALLY want you to finish the story.
>>
>want to do second playthrough on TTW again

That is valid unless you play on wilder difficulty. You will want the better tools sooner than later because of all the fighting. Fucking this. Patches are absolutely useless if you use your backpack efficiently, and there's so much real estate you can put them on. Hell, if nothing else, a space on the suit for patches would be great, something dedicated for just that.

Also, while we're bitching about small oversights, why the fuck can't the Bandana (a head item) be worn with any of the masks? You can wear the other hats with them, but the Yotei and DS1 Higgs masks should allow it.
>>
>>737507374
Thing is even on TTW you don't REALLY need to grenade launche/shotgun/sniper rifle. Theres a few other useful things for sure.
I'm starting my second 400TTW ranks playthrough and this time I'm going to unlock as minimal stuff as possible and ser how it goes.
Plus the game is way too generous in giving you tools for the situation. I kinda miss DS1 where you actually had to prepare beforehand.
Even the fight on the bridge, the game spawns a Quad Rocket Launcher. So take out the two coffin mechs with it. Then casually pick up their heavy machine guns and absolutely demolish the boss in seconds.
>>
>>737507752
Did you S rank all three?
I'm on the final one and people are saying don't try to stealth it, just charge Neil with melee and tie him up.
>>
>>737507752
Because both the bandana and the masks use the same slot so they can't be worn at the same time. That said they could easily fix it. By the way how do you get the bandana(s) ? Only did the first neil VR mission and didn't manage to S rank it so all I got was the suit. Didn't bother with the other two
>>
>>737503826
Agree with this, and the game does eventually have a mini "point of no return," where they intentionally hamstring one of your major functions to railroad you into the plot so you keep the momentum going. It doesn't stop you outright, but it heavily encourages getting on with it.

A lot of the locations also have soft or hard progress locks until after the end of the story.

>>737507921
Fuck no. From what I understand, you get the items just from beating the missions (I did, anyway.) I don't know that the ranks do anything for any of them. Hope not, that shit seems rough.

Actually, is there any reason to S rank any VR missions?
>>
>>737508045
That's what I'm saying though; the Bandana is in the "Head" category, which generally does NOT occupy the same slot as the "Face" category, yet it's acting like it's in the "Face" category. I don't know if maybe it's a bug and the Bandana is miscategorized in the code or what.

You just need to beat each VR mission. No need to S rank. The third and last one gives you the Bandanas. Second gives you a cool suit.
>>
>>737508079
In terms of unlocks I don't think you have to S rank any VR mission stuff.
