Not at all actually. Rebirth has flaws (like people still expecting a remake or a sequel and not really delivering on either front) but it's biggest problem is it bears the brunt of the bad faith square accumulated through at least 4 main entries before it.

Square was on a roll from VI to X, but they felt they had reach reached the peak of what final fantasy had to offer (looking back, maybe?). So they turned to experimentation after that, but it has been more misses than hits.Sometimes they become to caught up in an idea to their own detriment (XIII, Toriyama) or they become to obsessed with their 'vision' to the point it becomes unreachable and they are unable to deliver (versus XIII, XV, Nomura). Which is a common problem for creatives when no one reigns them in.Rebirth is one of their best entries since X, even with the risks and experimentation, but the well may be poisoned by now.

What SE has to do is capitalize on Rebirth's format.They came up with the ATB system for FF4 and that carried them all the way until FFX, just iterating on a framework that functions. They should do the same with Rebirth's system. Take the combat and open zone framework, and use it to build their next games in a timely fashion. No need to reinvent the wheel, just change things up slightly like they were doing for the SNES/PSX era.For example, imagine a FF17 with Rebirth's combat but with a job system instead, or with a FF9-style Trance mechanic. Or something completely new. Point is, they have a foundation that works.Just look at the gap between FF15 and FF16's releases, it's insane even when you factor the 7R trilogy into it. And all because of ridiculous mismanagement and bad decisions.Unfortunately, Square isn't firing on all cylinders like they used to in the past, and Nomura is practically the only talent they got left these days. At least he's trying to foster new devs, meanwhile all SE does is constantly shoot themselves on their own foot instead of taking the path of least resistance. Nip corpo autism at its finest.
