What was the golden age of AVGN?
>>
3 if you're going by seasons.
>>
>>737569373
2006-2010. It went downhill when he went HD with the Schwarzenegger games episode.
>>
>>737569373
I don't remember the order at this point. I just remember that my favorite episode was Swordquest. I wish the entire show was just documentaries about the weird stories surrounding games.
>>
2006-2014
few good ones after that but he even did a commentary track on post-2015 shows and was like "yeah not the best episode"
I've never seen his movie
>>
>>737569373
Seasons 1-3 were fantastic
Season 4 was good but I think it's where the decline starts
>>
>>737569683
I think there were a lot of great ones between 2011-2013, but yeah there was a bit of a shift in quality and feel during that point. It all completely fell off a cliff after the movie and never really recovered.
>>
Bible Games, Castlevania and Action 52 are some of the comfiest nerd episodes.
>>
>>737569373
Seasons 1-7

Big Rigs was the first bad episode
>>
>>737572421
Action 52 is pure gold
>>
WELL YOU'RE TALKIN' TO ME
>>
>>
>>737569373
I sort of view it like SpongeBob or the Simpsons. Everything is great and watchable at worst up until the movie then after that it kind of sucks outside of a few gems.
>>
Idk I just watch the episodes about games I know
>>
>>737569945
YouTube censorship?
>>
"Season 3" is the very best.
>>
>>737572650
>Big Rigs was the first bad episode
The bad episodes started after he came back from making his movie. Think it was Schwarzenegger games. Big Rigs is one of the better videos.

>Bugs Bunny's Crazy Castle
>Winter Games
>Nintendo World Championships
>Odyssey
There were plenty of bad episodes.
>>
>>737569373
Back when he was the ANN, or whenever you were in middle school. He's only got a shelf life of 3 years. When you're young enough that swearing is controversial and funny but not old enough that it's passe and immature.
In terms of quality, the original run had a feeling of authenticity to it. It was just a guy in his apartment drinking beer and talking shit about NES games. In some of the earlier episodes you could tell whoever wrote it had a serious long held grudge with these games. The series ran out of ideas sooner than most people like to remember. Not one person found shit pickle funny. Seasons 1-3 are the best, but even those had some disappointments. Already they were scraping the bottom of the barrel for ideas and pumping out episodes for the sake of making more episodes. AVGN peaked with the bugs bunny fight, the joker fight was a pale imitation and a lazy rehash.
On a side note, for as much hate as people like to give the slobs, it breathed new life into the channel as a whole because it brought back the feeling of genuine enjoyment for video games and shooting the shit with your friends. AVGN was never going to be good again but at least I got something out of rental reviews and the other podcasts of that era.

I'm not a fan of AVGN. I enjoyed most of the early episodes but I truly think AVGN fans are as bad as simpsons or south park fans at this point. The series had been lifeless and dead for more years than it was ever good for, yet they cling to it for nostalgia and lack of taste.

I think the episodes need to be looked at individually from there on mostly. There are a lot of surprisingly good episodes (power rangers, gameboy accessories, cd32, game magazines), but by and large they're very much awful, not helped at all by the shit staff he had appointed to him.

>It was never good
It really depends on your age. When I first started watching avgn, it was the same as south park where the appeal was "what if my parents catch me watching this, I'm such a rebel teehee". As soon as I had a teenage level of independence AVGN stopped being funny because it wasn't some dirty little secret between kids, it was just some dude swearing and grossout humor. If I had discovered AVGN as a teenager or an adult I would have never found it funny.
>>
>>737578132
It was literally the peak of normalfag's move into social media, anyone with social media relevance was pulling celeb cameos left and right.
Also the rumor is lloyd kaufman gave up some contacts to james.

>>
>>737578462
Bit of a late bloomer I would guess, betting you don't find smiling friends or rick and morty appealing when really it's the same style of comedy as south park or avgn.
>>
>>737578674
You're so fucking cool.
>>
>>737578674
smiling friends is pretty funny
>>
>>737569373
The golden age was 2006-2010. That was when he was actually angry and wasn't just doing it as his job to support his wife and kids.

AVGN used to actually be James Rolfe. Now AVGN is a separate character, and you can tell because James' acting sucks now.
>>
>>737578674
NTA but I don't care to watch Smiling Friends or Rick and Morty. My brother showed me the first season of the latter and I barely laughed at it, hardly remember it neither.
AVGN's subject material may not be all that interesting outside the swearing but the stuff he covers like Nintendo Power, Accessories, and all that were genuinely great.

He was making great episodes even after covering all games he had a personal connection to, but the decline is unavoidable. All entertainers have a shelf life, no matter how good they once were.
I'm happy he still makes episodes, though.

This is true, but eventually I stopped watching AVGN for that because I could watch someone else on youtube doing more in depth coverage of retro games without yelling ass.

Fun fact: James actually considered having a buffalo take a diarrhea dump in his ear for the show.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iRJMylbJlNQ

The only reason he didn't do it was for logistical reasons. But if he could have, he would have. DAMN!
>>
>>737579014
I don't think there's any shock humor in Smiling Friends. It's mostly absurdism, and the bit where the goofy character talks normally.

How did you start watching AVGN?
For me it was finding some channel playing episodes back to back 24/7 on some streaming website, I think it was the one that eventually turned into twitch or something iirc and I'd watch it on lunch break every day
>>
James should had covered Final Doom and Doom 64, so he and Mike would foam in rage doing TNT and Plutonia, at least Civvie wouldn't be the only one foaming over a certain cursed archvile trap of a map.

If Not have them cover Blood in the halloween special so there is a synergy over the the shitton of horror movie and irl horror references blood has.
>>
>>737579406
>>737579476
EH potato tomato, I'm not all that well versed on that show, haven't seen a single episode. The point I'm trying to make is that eventually you naturally mature out of "adult" cartoons (that are more appealing to juveniles/adolescents because they are viewed as edgy). You either accept that you've grown and that these shows aren't trash, they just don't appeal to you anymore, you bitterly assert that the trash of your day was better than the trash of today, or you never grow up and find that same style of entertainment appealing your entire life in which case you are truly blessed (a stunted retard).

I really don't think retro game content would have been succesful at that time, today, maybe but back then people really only watched AVGN because of the dick and poopoo diarrhea jokes and because it was a scrappy indie thing

>>737579817
James, Mike and Civvie collab wouldn't be a bad idea, but it has to be the shittiest retroslav jank game of fps of all time.
>>
>>737580319
I disagree, I think that during 2006-2010 LPs were at their peak and we saw channels like G4 piloting scripted lets plays. It wouldn't have been an hour long thing every week like GCCX was, but AVGN abso-tively could have filled a half hour timeslot talking about one title at a time, 24 eps a year if he had staff to assist. He was putting that out anyway with just him and mike when they did gametrailers.
The bigger problem would have been side content. GCCX fills a lot of it's airtime with shit that ISN'T the game, because watching just a game is boring. There were 0 arcades in the states during the 2000s because of the you know whos acting like you know whats and destroying them, I guess he could have done what they did in gccx s1 and interviewed industry vets.

ironically I think the swearing would have been the harder part to sell than the gaming. It would have crushed it on spiketv or g4.

Things that were stressors existed, but you were just unaware of them.
That said, there's an objective inferiority to modern times in how fucking overly political every single piece of media has become. Really just annoying more than anything, agree or disagree with the messages peddled, having them peddled using extremely unsubtle modern political analogs is gay as shit.
For a few years we had like 6 games every year having some sort of trump reference as a major villain. Mafia 3 set in the fucking 70s had it. Just fucking weird shit.

The Internet was less popular/global so it was both less corporate and easier to avoid people being overly political, pessimistic, annoying etc. Even with all the political joke cartoons/games, people weren't engaging with it the same way people do now nor do you have a million "news" websites trying to make a story out of literally everything. It was quieter.

Absolutely. He handled it fine because he had some level of PR training probably. Point is it's very much a pertinent part of how shit everything's gotten. It stands out VERY strongly in my memories as when I started noticing how fucking awful people were getting. How inconsolable they were, how eager to be 'right' that they were. Harrowing shit.

because early on the videos were about personal experiences and frustrations he was reliving on camera. He was able to call upon genuine emotion.
He's autistic, and not able to act. That's not me making fun of him, he literally says that in his autobiography, alongside how he shit his pants on the regular up through college.

The early seasons were mostly just poking fun at current day politics and pop culture. People say it's changed, but the way that it's changed is not how people think it did. How it's changed is that it's no longer as viscerally disgusting or overtly sexual as it used to be. Remember that episode where cartman murdered a kids parents then fed his parents to him in a bowl of chili and licked the tears off his face? Hilarious. Remember that episode where they graft a penis onto the back of a mouse and the mouse escapes? Peak comedy. The most recent time I can remember them doing something that disgusting was when kyle's dad gets surgically altered to become a dolphin or when everyone is giving themselves testical cancer. If anything south park has become less reliant on repulsive shock humor over time. It's always been about dunking on the political other, only difference now being that most of the people who would still watch it aren't cool anymore so they get offended by who the show is currently deriding. South park has always sold on the idea that by watching it you are part of a secret club of the cool kids. Also I'm sorry your parents didn't love you, I probably wouldn't be happy if someone exposed my kids to south park and there's probably not going to be a market for it in the future anyways because it doesn't appeal to today's youth. The only people who still watch that shit are people who were hooked on the idea of it making them special years ago. Much like most of 4chan's userbase.

I used to think so too, but you have to be the kind of person to really appreciate a guy like Lloyd Kaufman to "get" the episode. James is/was, most people aren't

>>

I dont think I've ever seen it. Why is it so bad?
>>
>>737588646
It just feels really forced, especially the moment where he clearly fake laughs, it's hard to sit through. And it's also such a boring choice of game, instead of some lesser known NES slop or something he had nostalgia for, it's an over-the-top shitty 2010's shovelware that everyone had already clowned on
>>
>>737589337
Imagine an AVGN episode but with a random old guy Jewish comedian doing jokes with him
>>
>>737589398
I remembered it had the best end. Just rewatched the last 5 min to make sure we were talking about the same episode. Laughed my ass off again.
Im not the biggest fan, I've probably seen 60% of his stuff, just so weird we picked the same episode but on the exact polar opposites of opinion.
>>
>>737589252
I only laugh derisively at people who have differing political opinions to my own to show my superiority or to show how tough I am for being able to stomach revolting imagery. Laughing at humor is for literal gay babies.

That's Adventure Time, not AVGN. AVGN is more South Park-era edge.
>>
>>737572978
At least the movie was actually good in the case of Spongebob and The Simpsons
>>
>>737572978
Not a great analogy. Spongebob season 4 was still pretty good, and the Simpsons went to shit long before the movie. AVGN also in general started sucking around 2011-2012.
>>
>>737589763
I dont know you, maybe you can still laugh. Every time this comes up at /tv/ I ask the anons what is funny as I just like comedy and hope they have new suggestions. 80% never answer and 20% say everything is shit now... Nothing wrong with hating Southpark becuase you like other stuff more. Absolutely everything wrong with hating Southpark becuase you are a brainwashed poltard who cant laugh anymore.
So what contemporary shows do you find funny?
>>
>>737590687
When did he make a game. Was that before or after the movie?
>>
>>737591037
avgn? Before. episode 1 of the game came out sept 2013, movie was july 2014.
>>
>>737591264
I want to say once he started pushing his upcoming game was the start of the decline. That said him and Yahtzee were the only ecelebs I ever watched. Even subprime James was better than 99.9% of the internet.
>>
AVGN started before most of the people on this site had even been born. Insane.
>>
>>737569373
it was never good
>>
>>737591728
1996? Honest I'd bet 1991 now.
>>
I remember when the AVGN almost exclusively reviewed bad games. Super Mario Bros. 3 was his one exception, and he made up for it by having an the Mecha Christ vs Satan scene in it.
But sometime in the 2010s, he decided AVGN should be just another video game review show and he started reviewing good games like Earthbound and Majora's Mask regularly.
>>
>>737592189
I heard all these early youtubers made a persona that they learned to absolutely despise as they were stuck with them. Doing the same goofy voice and boring schtik for 20 years. This was his act of rebellion before he could be himself for cinnemasacre.
>>
>>737592189
>in the 2010s
after his movie, in 2014.
It's extremely clear cut WHEN the series turns to shit, after ROB. Because he started dedicating enormous amounts of time to the movie after it, shilling to make more money for production of it, and more.Mike had to fill in the enormous 1-2 month gaps on the channel which he hated doing (and it showed cause the content was generally ass, just rehashed clips or boring ass top 10 lists. brown blocks with mein krapft is an exception).
It's VERY clear. Not "sometime in the 2010s", 2011. when ROB came out.
>>
>>737590705
>Nothing wrong with hating Southpark becuase you like other stuff more
I don't hate southpark, I just think it's funny until you mature a little bit and grow as a person. Sort of like how you grow out of clown antics like splashing water in someone's face a la three stooges. Not that it's not funny, but the humor doesn't land like it used to. Your taste evolves.
>So what contemporary shows do you find funny?
Honestly last time I laughed was a few days ago while playing Graveyard Keeper. The talking donkey that drops off the dead bodies for you to bury was an outspoken communist who later stages a strike for better working conditions. Its funny on multiple levels for me. Insomuch as "I can't believe the devs would make that connection, that's kicking the hornet's nest" and also in the literal comparison of communists being donkeys, then wrapping it around and having the donkey being a pragmatic character.
As far as contemporary comedies go, I fell out of the following the genre a long time ago, probably somewhere around the 2000s. The most recent one I watched was "What We Do in The Shadows" and I enjoyed it (though it's already at the point they ran out of jokes and has become tiresome).
Your entire post comes across as hostile. Confronting the political other because part of your political identity is watching south park. You assume I'm a poltard for no longer enjoying south park and that speaks volumes about you.

It's like, if you had a hundred mcdonalds hamburger in your life it becomes nothing special, there's no excitement like there used to be, but every once in a while you have a burger that really knocks your socks off. Comedy is much the same way, where what you enjoyed as a kid and would laugh heartily at only evokes a small smile as you move on to deeper a level of understanding. It's not bad at all, it's just you won't be guffawing at Charlie Chaplin pratfalling anymore. A kid is going to giggle gleefully at a birthday clown, a teenager is going to laugh sardonically at an edgy show that confirms their belief that they are in fact the smartest person in the universe, an adult is going to find humor in many situations you wouldn't expect because that perspective and experience allows them to recognize absurdity in a wider range of every day situations. I find much more humor in every day life then I used to, though I'm not literally laughing out loud and I can still recognize humor in juvenile and adolescent pursuits though I've grown past them and don't actively seek them. You're going to love it. When you start having sex you might find a similar progression.

The first 3 seasons of South Park didn't have episodes about current day politics or anything, back then they actually wrote episodes that didn't reply on irl events like them going to a carnival to win Terrance & Phillip dolls or the episode where Chef gets seduced by a succubus.
>>
>>737599632

You might not have been politically aware at that time, but pretty much every episode addresses a hot button political topic of the day, though in it's defense not as blatantly as current day southpark.
Just season 1:
>Alien conspiracies
>Ethics of hunting
>Environmentalism
>Being accepting of homosexuality
>Cloning and chimeras
>Assisted suicide
>FDA efficacy
>Ethiopian starvation and foreign adoption
>Christianity being pushed out of the education system
>Ethics of plastic surgery
>Archaeological hoaxes
>Single motherhood
All of these topics were controversial issues being heavily discussed at the time the episodes aired. All of these things may seem completely unimportant compared to whatever today's issues are, but these were the dinner party subjects of arguments that people were alienating eachother for. The show was highly political from it's inception and most of the plots were in direct response to widely known provocative news headlines.

>>
>>737579809
I knew about him since the Angry Nintendo Nerd days, but I never really cared to watch it since he didn't play any games I had played myself. This changed when he got to Fester's Quest, which I had and played a lot as a kid, so that was the first episode I watched. Loved it and ended up going through all his episodes up to that point.

Golden era objectively ends at Bible Games 3. That's when he took a long break to work on the movie and when he returned, his tone had changed. People saying it got bad before that are delusional and full of shit.
