Since everyone who wanted it already got it, which are your favorite games to play with it?
extra points if you use custom configurations beyond mapping the mouse to the trackpad

Playing Kingdom Hearts and Trackmania United Forever. For Trackmania having access to track pads is nice for the menus. For Kingdom Hearts I have the back buttons linked to the three magic shortcuts and the look button.

Backbuttons are so nice, they need to be standard. Being able to move my character, the camera, and have face button equivalents at the same time is the best and it's hard to go back
>>
>>738635131
they're way too easy to accidentally press on the new controller. the steam deck doesn't have this problem so i have no idea why they fucked with something that was working fine already

>>
>>738635975
yeah I'm not a fan of the back buttons on the controller. the deck ones have more resistance or at least require more effort to press because of the ergonomics and you're far less likely to press them accidentally. The dpad feels a bit better though, and the pads feel good as well.
>>
>>738635975
i prefer the buttons on the controller to the ones on the deck, they feel far better and better to press

Has anyone tried this game?
the top voted controller setting with thousands of hours has the shooting on the trackpad but I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong with it because it only shoots when you slide the trackpad, and it counts whenever you touch it as the starting point so if you touch the top and slide it down it shoots downwards
so basically you have to touch the middle and slide towards the direction repeatedly each time you want to shoot, which makes no sense so idk why is this setting rated so high

I tried a little bit of X4 with it, and I'm sure I could cobble something together to make it work exactly how I want it but its a bit of a PITA in games that expect a controller OR keyboard & mouse.

They should be a no-brainer, but there are two reasons they aren't standard. First, Corsair's subsidiary SCUF has patented the shit out of all shapes and forms of back buttons. Not sure how Valve got around it this time since they got sued for the original steam controller and that was one of the reasons it was discontinued. Maybe they just licensed the patents this time. Second, Xinput doesn't support back buttons anyway so for most games all you can do is duplicate the functionality of other buttons.
>>
>>738651282
If you need a controller for your PC, I'd say it's one of the best out there. But if you're happy with the controller you have, you don't need the Steam controller.

Packed-chads win again. Stay malding shippedcels!

In other news, I bought a Steam Controller Gen-1 a day after ordering the Gen-2, and it arrived on Saturday. I spent a bit of time on the weekend to do a thorough bandaid mod on it to reduce the clickity-clack of its buttons and plastics, and it's a pretty neat little device. Shame I missed out on it 10 years ago. I'm going to mod it with USB-C and a TMR joystick so I can hand it off to my gf to play sims or something with. I'm hoping to mod in dual-stage triggers on the Gen-2 when it eventually ships to me.

You could just have it not bound. I know crazy right. And i mean capactive buttons not just a stiff area
>>
>>738654270
You're suggesting "instead" so now I have those not bound and where do I bind them?
That's the thing, I don't think they just didn't think it through and find a random place to put triggers on so that people could use every single standard function of the controller without interference. They figured that the easiest thing to hold and release while still having some grip on the controller and each of the buttons and analogs were the grips.
>>
>>738631335
I don't get mine until tomorrow becusyUPS decided to hold it hostage over the weekend. But I think I'm gonna play the Twilight Princess PC port with all the gyro shit enabled. I have a couple other games like skate and Assassin's Creed Black Flag installed to test out the controller with various games.

Will that TP port support SC gyro?
It seems to support the dualsense but wouldn't it need to be added to steam at least for that?

I am using as close to the splatoon gyro implementation as I can with my stick controlling X axis rotation only and having the ability to snap my camera on on a button. Problem is that first person requires much faster camera swings than is comfortable when tracking close targets at high speeds for that method to work reliably which splatoon circumvents entirely with first person and a slower player speed.

I really need to figure out how to preserve X axis rotation on left and right of the stick while allowing the rotational spin of the flick stick when holding down. Sadly I don't think it's even possible to hack using steam input. Has anyone tried something like this?

>>738657207
I did and eeeeeeh I'm getting mixed results so far. It's more comfortable by again locking to just my X axis but I'm hardly flicking and stopping with any precision yet. Anything within the trackpad region (not leggting go of the trackpad) feels very intuitive though. I find while it's great for snapping to a general area, smooth tracking my cursor around a cover/corners feels very jittery, like you really have to lean on the gyro for that. Analog stick is fantastic for that, so if I could get a method where I could hold my rotation neatly but then also be able to swing my stick down to whip my camera around I really feel like it'd be a winning combination, steam input just needs to let me configure it that way.

I don't think you really read what I wrote, I said the splat stick method cant rotate and track comfortably with the speed associated with first person. You either have a nice comfortable turning radius for moving around the world or movement so fast you cant reliably stop on target. Flick stick is the only reliable way to solve both problems I just want to decouple the snapping and spin behaviours.
>>
>>738657817
So the old controller cant be detected to the new controllers dongle?

>>738657828
>I said the splat stick method cant rotate and track comfortably with the speed associated with first person
You shouldn't have to. You should use the gyro for that. Increase its sensitivity beyond what Splatoon can even offer. You're cucking your potential by even considering your secondary camera input whether that be stick or touchpad for tracking.

It's more like it's the least shitty.
Valve is a bit more intelligent at keeping a good image than most corporations out there by being a little bit more lenient when it matters. They still do scummy shit. They're still responsible for a lot of pain, suffering and misery. It's just they at least know when to stop so their reputation and popularity doesn't sink.
And they built a lot of it in the early days too with shit like "if you stole a cd key for Dirt 3, we'll only remove that game from your account despite having these terms", absurdly good sales at some points, providing a lot of services for free (of course with the expectation that you'd buy shit there, but not charging a subscription for something other companies would) and embracing and encouraging modding and open source projects.
They just know how to read the room much better than Microsoft, that is all. Whether or not people want to hear it, some of the recent push for Linux is generally beneficial for Valve, people see it as positive that Valve is putting their fingers there and contributing towards open source projects, but they fail to see that a lot of it is just a matter of convenience and an investment on a platform that's going to prop them up further (and it already has).

its weird its been an issue since the steamdeck came out but to this day the answer is always load a custom template whenever you boot a game. I guess Valve is just trying to idiotproof it so your controller always "works" when you load a new game even thoug hsometimes its still fucked
>>
>>738657094
im not quite sure if im understanding your issue correctly, but have you looked into action set layer? you can add a layer of different controller layout that overrides the original layout whenever you press or hold a button. should be able to help you with interchanging the function of your stick

A lot of words to say nothing.

Valve is a good company run by reasonable men and they've proven that for close to 30 years now so they have strong brand loyalty. Least shitty implies they are just barely better than the next company in this greedy industry which is laughably false.
>>
>>738660741
What a weird way to look at things. Valve supporting Linux benefits EVERYONE, why do you have this view that it's wrong for Valve to benefit from it? This isn't a zero-sum game, things that are good for Valve can also be good for consumers.

They've done a lot of underhanded shit over the years. Some of it even reverted back due to overwhelmingly negative (heh) backlash. Windows already comes with the Xbox app installed by default.
Every single other client is practically on equal terms with Steam in terms of convenience, but so are pirated games. The vast majority of those ask for just one thing: double click on a fucking .exe. If there's plenty of people moaning on Windows about lack of support outside Steam is because yes, there is a good number of people that don't use Steam or do sparingly.
On linux wine standalone is a pure lottery. The reason why linux can brag about compatibility -is- Proton. Lutris, Bottles, Heroic, Faugus, all that bullshit is complementary to Steam.

>>738667224
Basically your second one went onto a totally different truck and mailing systems like to fuck around since it's what's most efficient for them, not necessarily for the end recipient
>>
>>738667117
The innovation is that they can be bound independently. The overwhelming majority of controllers with back buttons only let you map them to other inputs on the controller, and even then it's usually only the four face buttons. This isn't necessarily the fault of the manufacturers, since it's a limitation of xinput. Valve has the dick big enough to force a new standard on the industry, at least as far as PC controllers go.
>>
>>738667425
One of the most stupid and interesting things of the past decade is Microsoft already solved this with GameInput, which supports a dizzying number of inputs completely natively and has backwards compatibility with Xinput controllers, but Xinput still reigns because Microsoft didn't force it like they did Xinput
>>
>>738666852
He obviously knows but there's some confusion about this shit anyways.
An online account and running client is required to use the controller. The account is free sure, but there's no guarantee that in the event of Valve fucking imploding they're going to release a standalone tool to make the controller still functional with a lack of online access. In an essence you lose the right to use your controller the moment this happens even if it's a fully functional piece of hardware and you did nothing to make it less functional yourself. It's not a normal situation where if something stops receiving driver updates it only stops functioning on newer OSes or whatever, it goes a little bit beyond that.
The problem with this is that the same argument was made about digital games on Steam and losing access to them and with how prolific the platform is it's just not reasonable to think that such event is going to happen in a long, long time.

Actually I don't get why people love clicky d-pads so much. I just want something that doesn't get too weird with the diagonals and registers them properly. The deck fails on that because I have to be stupidly intentional with the diagonals. I'm hoping this is better, RGC videos on the diagonals on both tell me that they're different because he highlights the problem I have on the OLED deck, and he shows that the steam controller is the opposite (it has sensitive diagonals)

With dinput being fully modular, I assume that there's no standardization on joystick axis, face buttons and the dpad? Some standard that defines specific enums as specific controller inputs, reserves a couple for future use and gives free reign for the rest would be nice. the fix to gyro games is for developers to actually start adding gyro to their games instead of us doing temu gyro
>>
>>738674336
This was cancelled, but I think they are working on unannounced collaborations with some other companies. The V1 is still orderable but not to the US. Handheld Legend has a controller with two gyros but its more expensive than the Steam Controller at $175. New Steam Controller is still worse than an Alpakka v1. I don't know why people are not adding two gyros yet. Many companies are switching to the IMU Input Labs used for the Alpakka though so that's something. Having one gyro is like using a really good ball mouse, but its still a ball mouse.

It's meant to be a replacement for the right stick not for the dpad, you'll find that for most games there's little use for the left touchpad.
If you want one of the touchpads to have a fluid mouse-like movement you can set it up in mouse mode, I like setting the right one like that for first person/third-person games.

Mine just got tracking number.
Can't wait for it. I love my original steam controller, but lack of d-pad made it unsuitable for many games that require precise input. But this one I can feel will be the ultimate controller.
I also like that they went with dualshock analog layout.
>>
I tried MGSV GZ with gyro and it's actually fucking fun to use, despite gyro just emulating analog (doesn't like double input with pad and mouse).

Just L2 hold was not to comfortable to me for gyro activation, but holding L4 or holding L2 while touching right stick feel nice.

I have been using steam controller as my main controller for years. I would still play Noita exclusively on KB+M.
Touchpads do improve stuff. I really enjoyed playing Breath of the Wild which I configured to change touchpads into actual touchpad mode when pulling the bow, that is surely more precise than an analog stick. But still Noita requires faster, more precise aim and controllers just can't complete in a game like that.

>Basic controls feel pretty good, much of what you'd expect

>Haptics are pretty good
>The touchpads, backbuttons, and steam input combine to give you lots of options, including setting up custom weapon wheels on the touchpad

Cons:

>Needs a redesign on the triggers. I have pinched my finger in the trigger. Never done this with another controller.

I still own my Controller 1 and say: Fuck you and kill yourself. The fact it only had ONE (1) goddamn stick and the "D-pad" function being shite is why I never touched the Controller 1 past a week (and even told Valve in their beta tester e-mail address specifically WHY I was disappointed).

It's part of the reason the Deck got proper fucking controls and they resized the trackpads to not be the main draw.

The controller 1 is fine for HTPC or heavy mouse and keyboard titles like Civilization or Starcraft. It's utter SHITE for anything else.

What's the consensus? Is lack of directx an actual issue? I'm a brainlet so I don't understand the implications but are you locked into playing steam games???
>>
>>738711079
Yeah
>>
>>738631335
Mine is supposed to arrive today. That being said I don't have any game I want to play with it immediately, it's just that I've been using the old Steam Controller since it came out and it's quite beat up, plus I needed to repair it before as well. It was due for a replacement.
>>
no one has recommended any games to play on this beyond "you can use the trackpads as a mouse for shooters and rts"

>>
>>738711425
The trackpad is a mouse in windows
>>
>>738711079
No. It works OOTB on Linux and on wangblows there's tons of 3rd party software you can use to translate it to xinput.

It's not funny to lie to the less gifted, anon.

>are you locked into playing steam games???
No, it just means you need to have Steam open and you have to add the non-steam game to Steam if you want to use a custom control config per that game.
>>
>>738710761
Hell yeah dude, the wait is about to be over and we can finally have the peak of PC gaming controllers.

I'm still waiting for mine. I ordered on the 4th of this month. Valve and GLS are just so slow, or maybe we're just used to Amazon's fast shipping.

Just arrived around 12 in the UK.
Too bad I still have to work.
>>
something i don't understand about the reviews is that they said that the controller feels cheap but it doesn't. it feels just as good if not better than my xbox one controller.
>>
>>738717086
Don't worry I was fucking your mom while >>738716998 was fucking your gay faggot dad
then we swapped
>>
>>738717842
Yeah, it's weird. I believed it since the original Steam controller was build like a happymeal toy, but this one feels great. The plastic isn't as cheap as older photos made it look either, it reminds me a lot of a Duelshock 3.
>>
>>738633076
lawsuit. considering the controller is going to be nearly impossible to get, you can sue.

On a Steam controller the setup to go for is trackpad + gyro. You use the trackpad for large movement, flicks and swipes and have the gyro set to fairly low sensitivity and probably to only be enabled when you're touching the trackpad, then you use it for fine control on the final adjustments of your aim.

I know it might sound strange before you try it, it does take some getting used to but once you get the hang of it you'll be using both of them together very naturally and without thinking about it and this control scheme is only really second to a real mouse.

Meanwhile in games where precision and quick aim don't really matter and you just want fast camera control, like 3rd person action titles, you can forego the gyro part entirely and just use the trackpad to whip the camera around way quicker than you can with a stick.

packaged bros, when is it our turn?
>>
>>738672463
At most your order time would influence when Valve ships the thing, but after that it's up to the courier service to get it to you. IIRC Valve shipped mine the day after orders opened (I ordered within the first hour) and it was supposed to arrive Friday, but the courier ended up being way slower and it only arrived today in the end, even though Valve shipped it very quickly.

I'm just gonna reject the package and order one in a few months at this point.
Ordering things day 1 is a bargain between getting it early and dealing with potential teething issues (really guaranteed with Valve hardware). With two weeks delay that ain't even worth it.

what are some cool games that take advantage of the steam controller doohickeys
>>
>>738707232
Should have made it the turret freak-out noise from HL2 and Portal.
>>
>>738724475
Helldivers 2. MGS5 as well, it just sucks the game won't let you use mouse and control stick input at the same time.
>>
>>738721368
I had no previous experience with Valve hardware, but this whole ordeal has left me quite bitter. No indication of when something will ship and no service.
Ordered 12 minutes in, and no update whatsoever since the dreaded packaged status. Would have been faster if they just let EU folks pick it up in person.
>>
>>738725523
it was the same with the steam deck. they said that they didn't expect to sell that many. it's going to be the same with the controller and the cube and prob the vr headset.
>>
>>738725523
I ordered index and got it in a week. Now I ordered steam controller last week and it will arrive in two days.
It just werks.

t. pole
>>
>>738725769
I believe the other two will have the reservation system from the start
>>
>>738726117
yeah but the ordering will be just the same. i only got my order in (on the first day) after someone in a /g/ said that you can order them now. said to arrive last week. got it only now. some cities just got removed for some reason. even if i could see them being part of the tracking but that is just gls for you. they should have used ups or dhl in europe.
>>
It's not gonna come this week, is it...
