I've been testing how many magazines/shots it takes to kill salads in an ideal sterile sandbox scenario. Here's the results.>Rifle2 magazines if you hit every shot, for about 60 bullets total.>Pistol/Makeshift Rifle4 magazines if you hit every shot, for about 68 bullets total.>Shotgun1 and a half boxes of shells, for about 24 shells total.The reality of fighting the salad in an actual run and probably not having perfect accuracy means you will want at minimum one more full magazine/box if you plan on killing it. If you only want to make it run away, you need far less ammo. If you want to be prepared to fight multiple salads, then multiply these magazine and ammo requirements. A sawian prepared to purge the jungle of all its salads will be armed to the teeth with spare magazines or shells, to say the least.Additionally, there's the matter of pistols and rifles jamming when wet which can be problematic.In multiplayer this jamming issue seems to be exacerbated, possibly to the point of turning the rifle into a bolt-action rifle and basically useless. I've had this exact scenario happen to me before. It sucked.For time-to-kill, the rifle is by far the fastest if you can accurately dump your magazines full-auto into the beast and is capable of killing it in just a few seconds flat. Assuming it doesn't jam.If you're not shooting full-auto, then the rifle is still the fastest, easiest, and simplest, with the pistol and shotgun coming second and third.
