Funny story. A while back I machine translated an episode of a JP show using google translate and deepl and some on-screen text recognition tools, as well as manually looking up Kanji. I don't know much if any JP, and it took me a while to translate everything since I had to re-feed the machines some text it kept screwing up, but the end result was surprisingly good. So good, when a "real" translation came out later, it was only slightly different in a few areas.

Japanese games and their localization is not targeted at nerds like it was in the 90s and 00s. This is the unfortunate reality of it becoming popular. Nerds were on the internet talking about games and anime and they learned what a gyaru was through cultural memes or TL notes (which no longer exist).
It's true that most people don't know what a gyaru is, even the hoards of people now into "anime aesthetics" because it's cool.
Gyaru aren't even in modern Japan any more than punk or scene girls are in the US. It was a culture/fashion of a moment in time that anime still uses because its creators don't want to accept the modern world any more than anyone else in the world does.

Seems to be what I gathered as well when I put the original line through multiple AIs. The actual direct translation seems like it would be something more like "Turbo, you're really riding a great wave~! If that's how it is, then there's nothing left to do but make a 'Mega-PegasusRainbow Katsu Curry'!" The "Cygames Translation" is based on their "Plain Translation" which kinda just screams genuine language incompetence more than anything, even beyond the Gen Z-ification. helios is reiwa gyaru, basically unintelligible babble. there's genuinely no way to translate it.

Yeah because its more literal. This is what it gave as something more "localized": "Whoa Turbo, you're really on a roll~! There's only one thing to do now… make the 'Pega-Size Rainbow Katsu Curry'!" Pega playing on "Mega Size" and "Pegasus".

You know this slide alone proves how retarded the translators are. We live in an internationalised world where not everyone who speaks English knows everything about American culture, so a southern American accent would be just as foreign to them as a Japanese Kansai accent. The translations they make are made for a very specific audience, one that probably doesn't even play these games. Their theory works when you're translating for American kids, not for the kind of people that would play Umamusume.
>>
>>745377413
People who are even remotely interested in Japan know what a gyaru is and people who are interested in the game 100% know what a gyaru is.

Basically, total localizer death is the best way forward.
>>
>>745386894
I genuinely have no idea what this post is trying to say. What the hell are you talking about?

They make a good point. If one character is supposed to be from Texas and one character is supposed to be from Osaka, and both characters have others remark upon their unique way of speaking, giving them the same generic accent in English is a shit translation when they speak vastly different in Japanese.
>>
>>745386894
How would you translate Kansai dialect then?
>>
>>745386463
There is no problem in finding ways to convey a character in a different language and to do that skillfully you need an understanding of both languages and cultures, the problem is translators for a lot of Japanese games don't understand any of that and cover it up with total rewrites and defend it maliciously even as the game faces backlash and suffers losses for it.

It's REALLY old as far as slang goes. Did a check and it's mid-late 1800's with its origins unknown, Ive only seen it less than 5 times in my life, usually used in a nautical setting to say someone went overboard or in a military setting to describe the worst fighting.
>>
>>745382095
>I hear it was one specific guy that wanted to do that
It's likely enough; seems like a problem that plagued quite a few companies back then.
Tokyopop in particular was really well-known for it. Their translations weren't good in general, but there was one or two memers on-staff who just had obsessions that they could not fucking leave out of the work. Like the Ikkitousen manga and the editor's pee-stained-panties fetish.
>>
>>745387006
The fact they're saying kansai accent=southern american accent in the first place is the issue. Why does that have to be the standard? They're supposed to be translating for an English speaking audience, not for an American one.

What's crazy about this notion of "plain" is that the original dialogue is just regular talking, not every line needs a stupid joke or quip like a marvel movie. The end result of these localizations is that it projects an image of Japanese games being childish and silly when ironically they're more mature than AAA western games because they don't do marvel quips and treat their setting with sincerity.

Censorship sucks but localization is legitimately something you have to work on for culturual differences and you retards need to stop sperging about it.
Yes, doing shit like removing holidays or toning down emotions is shit. Inserting narratives is shit.
Making the gyaru, an archtype that screams loud retad spout gen z dialogue is pretty spot on for an adaptation right now.
>it won't make sense later
Neither would implementing some slang reference to current japan where everyone would be equally confused.

I mean the most iconic old fashioned quaint english bit in culture is absolutely the antebellum american south.
You could create an entirely new accent every single time you make a character but it's quick and easy for someone to hear an accent and go
>ah okay they have these traits
off the rip.
It's the reason they have those accents in the original work.
>>745389961
I'd have to look at more of the comparisons but I didn't see anything particularly egregious compared to, like, >>745381604

But I suspect the "plain" translation was maliciously done on purpose to make the viewers believe the Japanese text is "stilted" by default, since it's the favorite argument of English localizers to defend their job. Neither of the two types of translation shown in the powerpoint document would fly in an academic test I passed once (in an attempt to become a English teacher) because you're supposed to be faithful as much as possible.

Localizers changing Maruzensky's original nickname Supercar to Hot Rod just pisses me off because not only is that literally historical revisionism but Hot Rod does not fit Maruzensky at all, when she was considered a bleeding edge horse when she made her racing debut in Japan and nobody would ever describe a supercar such as the Lamborghini Countach as an America hot rod car. In fact, the strict definition of a traditional hot rod refers specifically to American cars built before 1948. Maruzensky was born in May 19, 1974, the same year the Lamborghini Countach LP400 model first rolled off the assembly line. Despite all this background information, localizers still insist on retconning Maruzensky's nickname to Hot Rod despite characters and Japanese dialogue in the game mentioning Maruzensky's Supercar nickname

>>
>>745392868
If you legitimize altering the translation, it is no surprise that translators will feel empowered to care less and use "localization" as an excuse.
>>
>>745393107
Generally the issue is not localization when it comes to these "translations". It's really a mix of poor reading comprehension, and not giving a fuck(with some occasional Japanese proficiency issues). Localization is not supposed to be an excuse to alter the translation, it's supposed to be a tool to communicate the meaning of the source text.

These localizers don't know how close they are to pissing off Japanese horse racing fans considering they dare to retcon Special Week's nickname to essentially Emperor of Japan. You think shogun rather than emperor would been their first choice considering shoguns had the authority to summon and gather all military forces in Japan but then these localizers just went ahead to falsely portray Special Week as Japanese royalty.

Whenever localization defenders and localizers critcize the original writers and original writing. Always be skeptical. Metal Gear Solid 2 had an infamous localizer who did a hateful interview with HardcoreGaming101 where she sperged about Kojima. For a related blog, she proudly leaked her original localization prior to being tard wrangled by Konami. Therefore, we can see what she considers good writing. See image attached.
Note: the blue "literal translation" is a strawman of faithful translations. However, even with that, Agness Kaku's pre-tardwrangled localization is obviously awful and arguably vandalism.

Funnily enough, the same HardcoreGaming101 interviewer hired her because he believed her bullshit. Afterwards, John Szczepaniak quickly realized she's incompetent, unprofessional, and vindictive. Once fired, she became increasingly deranged. Agness Kaku sued him three times and lost.
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1748556728/the-untold-history-of-japanese-game-developers/posts/1628237
I recommend reading the 30 May 2014 Kickstarter update by Szczepaniak regarding Agness Kaku. She's very deranged.
>>
>>745386218
It's SUPPOSED to sound awkward though. It's all disconnected hyperlatives. Like if you'd hop a 5-year old up on sugar until they race across the room, and then you listen to them rattling off a story. That's actually the correct tone and voice to reach for. Not fucking Gen-Z -isms.
>>
>>745393606 (me)
Agness Kaku also leaked all localization files related to her work at Intac for Konami and Metal Gear Solid 2. The files included Konami's tard wrangling. See image attached.
Thankfully, she was tard wrangled. The tard wrangling was established after Metal Gear Solid 1 Integral (Japanese release of MGS1's English dub) because Kojima disliked learning about all the specific changes Jeremey Blaustein's localization made when retranslating the English dub into Japanese subtitles.

Many years later, Jeremy Blaustein became the cofounder of the infamous Dragonbaby. If you know about that localization company's recent controversy with YunYun Syndrome (https://steamcommunity.com/app/2914150/discussions/0/805723552519171798/#c805723552519172860), then you'll know Kojima was right about Blaustein. It's also worth mentioning that Blaustein had oversight from Konami's Scott A. Dolph and Satoshi Hirano. Without those two, his Metal Gear Solid 1 localization would've been as unfaithful as his prior localization of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.

In general, localizers claim there's an unpoken nuance between the source language and the target language. They want the public to think that they are the only ones capable of deciphering it. They aim to establish themselves as a unquestionable authority to avoid being held to any serious standards. These people are professional liars. After all, they lie about authors' words. Localizers just want to protect their own freedom to graffiti someone else's work, and they want the credit for doing so. The following article regarding the Funimation localizer for Dragon Maid's dub is an excellent example of this:
https://boundingintocomics.com/anime/former-funimation-script-writer-jamie-marchi-doubles-down-on-her-infamous-anti-patriarchy-localization-of-miss-kobayashis-dragon-maid-this-is-what-happens-when-a-script-is-dubbed-into-a-diffe

30 May 2014
>Hanako Kaku and Agness Kaku have data-mined the comment sections, using people's real names and personal details to intimidate them through LinkedIn, sending messages threatening to drag the backers into alleged legal proceedings.
>Agness has gone to great lengths to paint herself as the victim, accusing me of sexism and ending her career as a writer in games. She had no career at Square-Enix. The company's head of PR, David Yang, officially confirmed Agness was not an employee, just a contract worker doing part of the text translation.
>Furthermore, Agness keeps claiming that I ruined her reputation. And yet in an email dated 3 June 2013, Agness openly admits to having a bad reputation in the Japanese games industry and warned me that she might ruin my campaign due to her bad reputation.
A former coworker of Agness said...

You really don't. Anyone following or watching anime should understand Japanese culture after like 3 years of watching and learn about the other culture.

I started watching anime when I was like 8 on German TV. I'm Croatian with it I learned the German language by 15. Just from watching TV. Shit like Anime, Stargate, Star Trek, Mcgyver, Stefan Rab and so on...

Then I moved to English and watched Japanese with subtitles.

It wasn't 3~4 series in that I understood the hierarchy of -san -chan -kun -sama that older men could call girls -kun and so on...

It didn't take long for me notice the different ways of saying things by goofy characters versus serious ones.

Dousuriyaiindaa isn't something a grown man would say unless it's in a comedic I'm in a dai pinchi sense. It didn't take long to leanr this by simply being exposed to a few Japanese movies and anime and learning what Real Japanese is like.

Then he found that Jeremy made so many changes that Integral took 6 months to release and after MGS2 he hired someone that would only do 1:1 translation and kept working with him.

Blaustein was a hack, but he was generally right when it came to MGS1. The absolute SLOP that came after him proves that, his rewrites lead to Konami and Kojimbo clamping down hard and created hideously wooden translations. TTS had some absolute dogshit lines like "when death is entreated, the battle is decided" (and because only the cutscene dialogue was retranslated, they fucked up that it was a callback to an earlier Miller codec (although Blaustein missed this too and it's only in the original Japanese, so in English there are FOUR different translations for this line)).

The dude still claimed he invented the HALO jump and he completely raped SOTN, so even ignoring Dragonbaby, he's retarded.

Where the fuck did I do that? Blaustein was right when it came to LOCALISATION. Konami and Kojimbo got it completely wrong for a dozen games afterwards, MGS1 is the only MGS title where you can make an argument for the English version. The accents are fun, the changes add some awkwardness like Raven not reacting at all to the "muk-tuk" jab but they're generally at least entertaining. The rest of the series was massacred.

Yeah I didn't read past the slop part. Just assumed it was another Japanese bad. I don't think Jermy localized as much as he claimed too. You think back to MGS1 being a little unique in terms of Snake being a parrot and that's the "literal" translation boogyman translators cry about. In Japanese it's more common to repeat back what was said. When you wouldn't in english. Translators always claim they did all this work when in reality they phoned in most of dialogue and whatever they couldn't bullshit they just did a basic gloss that still misses a lot.
>>
>>745395141
They're actually really good if you give them context. Like you can use gemini/claude and google lens to OCR to basically translate manga 1:1 with very little lost in translation.

I'm saying this as someone who speaks Japanese.

And honestly I'm shocked how few people do this. Most retards on say manga dex just use google lens and go page by page. Or OCR and then use google translate or DeepL.

If they just copy pasted the OCRed Japanese text and added a few prompt lines explaining the scene the AI does a ridiculously good job.

It will explain everything from onomatopoeia to slangs and it even understands a lot of the context since it's also trained in Japanese on LNs and WNs and so on. So it knows all the weird kanji writing for skills or concepts that have been used before and translated correctly.

Blaustein did a lot of work. Snake in MGS1 is nowhere near as much of a parrot as Raiden is in MGS2, Blaustein changed a lot of lines but when 90% of Snake's dialogue is repeating the last word back to someone, there's only so much you can do.

Did he rewrite the whole game? Obviously not. But he did a much better job than all the other teams, because those teams were under much stricter instructions to be literal with their interpretations, which lead to all the other MGS games having fucking dogshit translation work.

It's like this everywhere else too. Christmas is pretty much just an American holiday like 4th of July. It's not foreign and unique to Japan for people to treat Christmas as the American day with the red-dressed Santa Claus and his elves who make presents.
The point of Happy Holidays was to be inclusive with ease. When you can't exactly ask everytime what people are celebrating in December, Happy Holidays can be used. However, when characters are celebrating a specific day where they talk about Santa and presents, that can only be Christmas. They even call it Christmas. And the Christmas they are refering to is the American Christmas, which was culturally exported to Japan.

>>745395008
I'm skeptical on the Twin Snakes being retranslated with the intent to be more accurate. It kept Jermey Blaustein's line where Liquid claimed Big Boss was in a coma when he was cloned. That is a line in a cutscene. The rerecording process for the Twin Snakes allowed them to change lines. Are we sure they didn't just simply change the lines because they could?

TTS was being made during the production of MGS3, isn't that kind of shit expanded on in MGS4? Kojimbo probably hadn't rewritten it yet. They didn't even change Dr Clark into being a woman, and that should've been decided by the time they were doing the voice work.

I think only certain lines bothered Kojima, I haven't been over the whole cutscene script with a fine tooth comb. Most lines were left as is, just key lines were changed to be "closer" to the original. None of the changes made were changes a native English speaker would make, because they purely make the lines crappier.

I used to screenshot every grammar error I found in each gacha game I played, sort them by folders and send them to the global team to get the translations fixed, but they never did. >??? How are AI translations not ALREADY good enough to obliterate localizers?
Imagine there's a hospital where there's a 90% mortality rate even for benign ailments. And people want to replace the staff with robots who will drop the rate to 50%. The problem, The only people going to the hospital in the first place are lunatics and to normal people, even the improved mortality rate still looks really bad. So the people using the hospital don't want improvement because they're "satisfied", and the improvement isn't big enough to bring in anyone sane. The only chance of robots taking over is the hospital wanting to cut costs and even then, they'll still retain some of the old staff who are going to continue their killing spree.

Japanese usually doesn't use “you,” “he,” or “she,” and even “I” is often omitted from sentences. If an AI isn't given enough context, especially from an image, it has to guess whether the speaker means “I,” “he,” “she,” etc. That's why MTL translations can often mix up genders and even who is actually being referred to.

It's fine to argue that Blaustein's changes directly LEAD to how dogshit the rest of the MGS translations were because they pissed off Kojimbo, but as a product, MGS1 is a reasonably fun experience in English, and everything after is only good DESPITE the translation work. MGS1 is the only one where you can argue that it's transformative. Is it as good as MGS1 in Japanese? Obviously not. But the rest of the series isn't worth playing in English, while I occasionally have the desire to replay MGS1 in English.

Woah. You noticed this too. I knew スーパーベイビー法 was in the original script because I researched the line where Liquid stated Big Boss was in a coma when cloned. TheSnakeSoup (https://thesnakesoup.org/myth-articles/myth-big-boss-was-in-a-coma-when-he-was-cloned/) covered this. Because Liquid mentions the Super Baby Method first, I knew the line Solid Snake must have readback that.

I think Jermey Blaustein is complaining that he left the line as-is without vandalism. Then, the deleted poster showed Jermey a different line. Then, he responded by bragging that it was his graffiti which referenced media he likes.
Metal Gear Solid 1's translation was definitely saved from further vandalism by Konami's Scott A. Dolph and Satoshi Hirano. Localizers like Jeremy Blaustein are very intentional about all their decisions. Their effort can create good prose; however, they produce shit and graffiti without the required tardwrangling.

P.S.
Since you know Japanese, can you translate Liquid's line for me. I'm learning Japanese and I'm skeptical about TheSnakeSoup's transcription and translation. Their transcript adds punctuation where the Japanese subtitles didn't have them. However, this could be because the voice itself has punctuation while the subtiltes don't. The bigger problem is their final translation doesn't reflect the punctuation they added.
Taken from the subtitles, here's Liquid's lines:

What's very strange is that the coma thing is kept in the French version, and according to Solid Snake's French VA, it was the first western translation/dubbing of the game to be done by Konami, and while he doesn't say anything about the translation per se, he says the actors had the japanese cutscenes as reference, as the english dub didn't exist yet. I also checked the Otacon anime scene, and it's pretty much 1:1 with the english version.

I checked Wikipedia, which says that Meryl/Sniper Wolf's French VA participated in the french translation, and changed some lines depending on the actor dubbing them. There's a half hour interview as a source, i'll try to get AI to summarize the relevant parts.
>>
>>745398895
It's not uncommon for every other language to have a more faithful translation. This applies even when the english is used as the base. Final Fantasy 14 is a good example.
>>

>>
>>745398731
The existence of unfaithful localizations is a problem. The audiences cultivated are taught to be intolerant to the original work and authors. When these unsustainable audiences outnumber those in Japan, they will be foolishly appeased. The domestic work will be transformed. This has already happened to Sony and Nintendo.
As these anti-Japanese scum are continously given official positions, they will enforce their will. They have used community management, localization, consultancy, and censorship to change art. Image attached is relevant. It's from Umamusume's official discord. I will respond to this post with another relevant image.

We must ensure our allies informed rather than put them down for being lazy dummies. Global audiences are affecting Japan, and anti-otaku gatekeepers are cultivating unsustainable audiences while gatekeeping us. We have to gatekeep the anti-otaku, but that starts by empowering the non-Japanese-speaking otaku however we can.

I got the interview down, turns out the french -translation- was based on the english version, which was ready before the english dubbing began, but the -dub- was based on the japanese one. Seems we got the worst of both worlds.

Shigesato Itoi was hands-on with Mother 1's localization and approved of all the changes that went in, but that could be considered a special exception because Mother 1's Famicom version was unfinished and the localization provided an opportunity to add a proper ending and tweak other features. Some of the additions were made by NoA such as the addition of a run button (which was only added for debugging but kept in because it felt good to use), and the Japan-exclusive GBA rerelease of the game was directly based on the English localization.
https://tcrf.net/EarthBound_Beginnings/Version_Differences
He was not personally hands-on with Earthbound, but his main collaborator when writing the script moved to the US for two months to work with the localizer for the game. It had an ethos of
>The localization needs to be
something that the English-speaking audience will enjoy.
which was pure-intentioned for the project but which has obviously been corrupted by modern localizers, as seen in this thread. Porky doesn't look at the camera and tell the player his acts of villainy are the results of late-stage capitalism.

I played GTA IV in french and the subtitles translation was mostly accurate, and felt very natural sounding. There's one line they changed though: in TLAD's final mission they changed the line "Traitorous fucking bastard." To "Fucking right-wing sex-partying dinosaur." Which is taken word from word from a french parody movie from the 80s titled "La classe américaine". The French translators seemed to like that movie, since they replaced Joe Pesci’s Goodfellas quote in one of GTA Chinatown Wars' boat missions with another quote from it.
What does /v/ think of that?

I don't understand why they didn't just look up what a gyaru is, look at their equivalent in the west, and then used that.
Gyaru culture is heavily associated with fashion and clubbing, so why not just use that? Helios is quite literally dressed up for a rave.
It helps tie in her artwork that usually shows something about clubbing.
By making it gen z, it also strips her from the connection she has with Daiichi Ruby, which represents the Lolita Fashion that reigned along gyaru fashion that were THE two popular subcultures in Heisei era.

This is fine. Turning Kansai into a Brooklyn/New York accent has been a staple in localizations for a while, and it kind of fits Tamamo Cross' personality anyways

>>745377361
Not a bad way of getting Yukino Bijin's bumpkin personality across, even if some of the expressions are super-archaic even for her (I think she uses "Zounds!" at one point, which is like from Shakespearean England)

>>745377413
I'm still not sure about this, but if you want to get her incomprehensibility across easier to a mass audience, Gen Z nonsense slang isn't a bad compromise

The only thing that really annoys me is the "Christmas" downplaying. If you have a game where Santa is a constant presence, XOguri's ultimate has her climbing a Christmas tree, and numerous characters have vocals where they literally say "Merry Christmas" IN ENGLISH, I somehow doubt seeing the word "Christmas" in text would cause much outrage.

>>
>>745400903
You are mistaking cause and consequence. They decided to pair Helios and Ruby together because they represent each the gyaru and lolita subcultures that were extremely popular during the Heisei era.
And the consequence of that is the dynamic of one being the party animal (again, gyaru is closely related to clubbing culture) and the prim and proper lady have a tea party.
I like it, but this connection is completely lost on localization, and it often comes as if Helios likes Ruby for no reason at all.

So, it seems that they also did this same presentation in Japanese. You know what that means? Time to critique the English-Japanese localisation of their presentation! Well, only a couple of stand-outs, since I don’t have time to go through it line by line.

Slide 7 They left “Recognisability“ and “Authenticity” untranslated in the JP version of their presentation. And put a whole-sentence caption over “Recognisability“ like a god-damn 2005 fansub (“一目でそのキャラクターだとわかること”, something like “The quality of being able to understand that character in one glance”).

Very interesting that when it’s their own work they’re ’localising’, they decide that some terms are untranslatable and need translator‘s notes, like perhaps they know what they’re doing is vandalism and are unwilling to vandalise their own work.

Slide 31 The already memed-upon line about gyaru culture being poorly-understood overseas is instead explained to the Japanese-speaking audience as ”伝わりにくい”(Difficult to convey), which, due to how understatement works in Japanese corpo-speak works, probably means something more like “totally untranslatable”. They are not framing it as lack of knowledge, as in the English version.

Also from that same conference:

ゲームシナリオライターを支援するAIツール開発の実践 (Practical development of AI tools to support game scenario writers)

コードレビュー支援ツール開発から学ぶ (Learning from the development of (LLM) code review tools)

The writing is on the wall for the job in game development most easily replaced by LLMs.

There has been a intolerance for faithful localizations because of how audiences were cultivated. English audiences were cultivated with Funimation's dubs and Square's Ted Woolsey. This differs from Japanese audiences whom are cultivated with the original creators' expression. With their own disregard (and sometimes hatred) of Japanese expression, localizers have cultivated audiences whom equally disrespect the original creation even when these audiences are ignorant about the Japanese release.
This situation is unsustainable. There must be a realignment of audiences or else the environment of Japan's fiction production will be destroyed. The market won't shrink because of faithtful localizations. However, it will be destroyed by unsustainable audiences. Global "fans" that target Japanese expression with cancel culture is a result of localizers' cultivation.

Super Mario RPG and Final Fantasy would be just as successful without Ted Woolsey's unfaithful localizations. However, localizers like him have thoroughly raped the entire global market for Japanese media by cultivating unsustainable audiences. Localizers are a cancer that corrupt normal, healthy audiences into unsustainable audiences that demand the destruction of anything Japanese. Once all cells become cancer, death is inevitable.

The accused has become the accuser, and loudly he shoves the accuser into the dock. So it always was in the past when a person or a movement fought the Jew. This is true. The problem isn't that the current-generation LLMs are incapable.
It's that they need to be given the context within which to translate. Both the current scene AND the details of the setting. E.g. if a character has a typical personality quirk, speaks in a certain dialect, has certain archetypical mannerisms, etc. then you need to TELL them that.

>They are not framing it as lack of knowledge, as in the English version.
Someone should counter-publish a proper back-translation of their English-speaking-world translation for the Japanese professional audience. Show them what's actually being shown to the English world, through a lens they can understand.
And then hope it lands on some executive's desk who will end up connecting the dots. That'd result in shitstorm-in-T-minus-10, and it has precedent of having happened before.

Will never happen because people only want to complain than actually provide an argument worth a discussion.

>low quality/troll translations
Someone posted this panel. An english translation of it. And just looking at one part not the whole, this 立派で。。。 was translated as well-endowed. Which is definitely wrong. She says まじめ, 誠実. She's saying his earnest, sincere, upstanding. Not how you would translate probably just that's the idea. Well-endowed is way too explicit. Even taking the wealthy meaning it doesn't make sense. He's rich doesn't fit with the other complements. Yeah when she says 立派 she's obviously referring to his specifically his dick but it's still implied because it could plausibly refer to just him as a whole. Don't know when the translation came out(source is COMIC 高 2016年11月号) but what the fuck.

Japanese business boomers are literal retards and uncritically believe everything that American consultants tell them. There might be a change once Japanese boomers die (they are never going to retire even if they go senile) or the Chinks and Gooks finalize their takeover of Eastern game industry.

Are you a trannylator?

He's obviously saying that, just like not everyone knows how kansaiben is different from traditional Japanese, the type of brown ESL third worlders who play gacha games might not know what a "southern" American speech pattern is.

>-"Christmas", "date", and "master" are censored
I've seen the "Christmas" slide, where the Japanese is literally saying "Merry Christmas" and "Santa", and then she censored "Christmas" but she didn't censor "Santa" for some reason.

Anyway, what are "date" and "master" changed to? And why are those censored?
>>
>>745377413
I like how many are seething about this, but also how the localizers act like this is a revolutionary idea. People have been translating Gyaru as whatever the current nu-generation slang speak is for ages now. It wasn't uncommon at all in the 2010s to see Gyaru translations speaking in exaggerated slang with an overuse of words like "totes" or an excessive amount of cutesy sounding idioms.

>I'm not a translator so I don't know, but I would avoid a connection with real existing things.
So instead of using an accent that only 99% of their audience will understand, you want them to make up a new accent that nobody will understand?
>>
>>745412364
>date
can't have romantic relationships with teenage horses or else they'll get flak
>master
probably something to do with slavery
>>
>>745412745
So what was "date" and "master" translated to then? Or did they just change the subject entirely and create new, unrelated dialogue for those scenes?
>>
>>745412827
I think know about the master thing. In Japanese, Mihono Bourbon calls the trainer Master, in English she just calls the trainer Trainer.
>>
>>745412524
Kek, I remember an attempt at this using nonsensically placed umlauts to "show" that a word was being spoken differently than it typically was

>In Japanese, Mihono Bourbon calls the trainer Master, in English she just calls the trainer Trainer.
Ah, so the "unique speech of Umamusume", as depicted in this slide (>>745377292) is not actually as important to the trannylators as they want you to believe.
>>
>A asks B to show his fighting ability, B agrees and responds "胸を借りるよ" lit: "I'll borrow your chest"
Do you guys think idiomatic expressions such as this should be translated literally? this is an idiom originated from sumo, I believe. A practice in martial arts where a junior takes on a senior to test their own skills and learn from them. It might not make much sense unless you know, so would it be better if it was TL'd as something like "I'll take you on"?
