I don't think correct characterization is a prerequisite to telling a good story. I think writing compelling characters comes first and foremost when it comes to character writing, which Ian succeeds at for the most part. I don't like that he's made Sonic into a redeemer nowadays, though.

It's so nice experiencing Sonic written by someone who actually understands what Adventure Sonic was all about. All the other interpretations of Sonic (Movie, Boom, Archie, Colors) always felt off to me. Most of them are fine as standalone but their personalities are completely different from Adventure Sonic and from each other. I want one consistent personality for the blue blur and I'm glad Ian Flynn decided that should be Adventure Sonic. Frontiers did have a more mature take on the character but he made it feel like a natural progression rather than a total reimagining. Anyone who doesn't like this version of Sonic probably grew up with Colors, Boom, or Archie Sonic instead of Adventure.

I think some fans just get so caught up in the weeds about accuracy, I don't care that much about accuracy about the characters as long as they are in the same general area, and the story is well written.
