>>488062479The logic of the system is based around the ideas of “speed” and “aggression.” In addition, I want to limit “meaningless” options as much as possible and very clearly “visually communicate”. Let’s go over these concepts bit by bit.What is speed? Basically, I want matches to feel as fast and dynamic as possible. Some fighting games tend to feel a bit sluggish or like they drag on for one reason or another. I’ll preface this by saying that many of the games I will list here are also games that I like, this is just something that I don’t like about them. An element that detracts from this speed for me is how some of these titles have very long combos that have little to no interactivity. For example, KOFXIII has obscenely long periods of you just sitting around and waiting for the combo to finish, or alternatively, obscenely long periods of you executing a combo to optimize that last bit of damage and keep the opponent from playing. I understand why this exists and I get that plenty of people like this style of combo, but after a few reps of something, I tend to get bored of seeing it. Some games don’t really have the long combos, but still have some other element that slows down the game in some way, like how Samurai Shodown has very long cinematic supers. I get that the SSM animation is there to be a reward for you landing the SSM, but after you see them a few times, they just start eating up match time and you wish that you could speed them up. So my solution to these problems are two-fold. For one, combos in my game tend to be fairly short. Not as short as Samurai Shodown, but the system is designed to have limited hits on a sequence. Basically, you can only use a move in a combo once, or else the opponent escapes and immediately spins out. That way, the combos remain fresh each time you do them and you’re not just seeing a loop of the same move over and over. On top of this, supers are short. They have a little super flash to allow for super flash
reversals, but no 30 second fatality when Winifred uses her Dullahan level 3 where she brutally cuts your head off and the Celtic gods devour your soul as your essence travels to Dubnos to be damned for all eternity as they experience excruciating grief, sorrow, pain, and agony that never ends. Rather, she just strikes you and there’s a small flourish that plays as the opponent crumbles so it sets up the HKD timing. Furthermore, the game is designed around relatively short rounds. You are supposed to be able to win within 45 seconds or less. Which ties into a thing I dislike about a lot of airdashers. They have these timers that almost never run out and you never see a timeout due to the aggressive nature of the game, so I have no idea why it’s set so high. I guess it’s an arcade failsafe thing, but on some of these, it might as well not even exist. It’s not like most even have huge theoretical TODs with HnK scaling that you can use to eat up the timer. Most just have very long combos that nearly kill if you don’t burst and they still have 30+ seconds left by the time they do their last 50/50 on wakeup into kill sequence. I have watched many Nitroplus tournaments and I can’t even remember the last time I saw a timeout occur. Meanwhile, Virtua Fighter is a very aggressive game and it still has timeouts because they use a pretty short timer. So I wanted to have that to further agitate the sense of urgency in the player. You can also move around fairly quickly, but I’ll get more into that in the section about meaningful options.Let’s now talk about aggression. I feel like a lot of games are made to be aggressive, but then there’s either some defensive OS or centralizing defensive mechanic that hampers the defense capabilities of the game. This is a thing that’s a problem for Virtua Fighter, especially 4. Yet again, I would like to clarify that I like this game. But my point is that a lot of options that seem committal on paper are actually not that dangerous.
For example, side stepping carries the risk of you getting thrown, as throws track, but then you can just buffer three throw escapes during your sidestep and you don’t have to worry so much. Characters in VF have multiple throws that all have the same startup animation and all track the same way, so it’s supposed to be a pure 4 or 5 way mixup guess in that game. But with the MTE technique, you’re only vulnerable to one or two of those options. I guess a game with 5 way mixups off of any throw attempt would be overwhelming (which is probably why they changed it to just 3 types of throws in 5), but designing the game around this type of defense seems like an odd choice to me. And it’s totally intentional, too, as it appears in the VF4 tutorial in the PS2 port of the game. So they were very aware of it and didn’t patch it out on purpose. Perhaps that’s a bit of a messy example, but this also applies to KOF2002. In that game, you had to input the right button to break a punch/kick throw, but you could just piano it to get out anyway, so that made throws weaker. In the newer KOF games, you don’t even have to do that if I recall correctly. You can just break both times with either button. Anyway, that was a long tangent, but my point is that my system is designed to cut down on things like that. There are defensive options, but they are designed to be committal on purpose. If your reversal move is blocked/whiffs, then you are opened up to being Dire Hit, which is basically this game’s version of Crush Counter, with increased damage and dizzy. If you try to use your Supreme Guard (button based parry) and it whiffs, there is around 30 frames of recovery and you’re going to get punished. That, and the opponent can just throw it anyway. Not to mention that the reward for it landing is not a guaranteed punish. You just get plus frames. But to make sure the game doesn’t revolve around baiting and punishing this at all times, it is tied to a resource that is finite.
A finite resource that can also be spent for offense in the form of a cancel that can either make a move safe or extend a combo. But for actual aggressive options, well you have plus on guard moves like your close B, but you also have a guard crush meter to punish opponents for guarding too long. You also get rewarded for landing a hit. The creeping dread of Falter (dizzy) is a constant factor you have to look out for. This logic leads to situations where you can make a meaningful choice between doing a grounded combo that generally does better damage or an air combo that inflicts better stun. In this game, air attacks do more dizzy damage than ground ones. This was done to discourage jumping as much. Something I dislike about KOF is how even though it has no air guard, people still love to jump because the reward on anti-air is often fairly weak. There are exceptions, of course, but those exceptions also tend to be very strong characters because of that, such as that time Krohnen was incredibly good in KOFXV since he could kill you if you jump in and he had meter. Anti-airs are fairly weak for a lot of characters in Chaos Code, too. So I wanted a game where you still had good air options and air movement for multiple types of offense and aggression, but I also wanted there to be a good way to deal with that and let the opponent know they can also approach from the ground. You jump in and get one good stun move into a standard ground combo chain. But you get anti-aired and the opponent gets an air combo where every hit increases your Falter gauge by a significant amount and then you’re that much closer to getting put in a very bad stun situation. But with all that being said, I still want offense to be committal as well since the reward for it is so high. Because of that, there are things like throws generally being non-Option Selectable even though they’re one button. I did this by attaching other moves to potentially abusable combinations. But A+C and B+C are attached to some other systems in the game, so you can’t just 6B+C to get a throw if you’re in range or a safe on guard f.B if you’re too far. That’s a thing that I find interesting about Guilty Gear, but don’t really want in my game. You can just input S+HS and get a safe button if you whiff your forward throw. In Aquapazza, you can’t 6B+C because B+C gives you heavy Smash. Can’t remember off the top of my head if A+C doesn’t give you throw, but I don’t think it does? I’ll check when I wake up. Anyway, I wanted offense to be about as committal as defense. But the reward is so good, players will be willing to risk it all on that anyway. There’s no “negative penalty” type system, but I came up with something I found a bit more organic. In VF, if you let Shun-Di run away from you, he can just start drinking from halfway across the screen and increase his damage for the next round. As such, you never want to let him get away. Something similar exists in this game where characters can just build resources if you let them run. Some have much more deadly ones than others. From distance, Winifred can either do her taunt that forces a dire hit on her next strike or replenish her shields. That’s not really particularly strong. But Olga can cook food with her various D specials and then that leads to her having incredibly strong upgrades for the next round if you don’t deal with her there and then. So you can try to get a life lead, sure, but she’s going to have buffed damage and movement speed the next round. Other characters get varying degrees of offensive bonuses from range like that. So you will usually want to stay on top of your opponent.Now I’ll explain meaningless options. People always talk about every character being viable and while that’s an admirable pursuit, something I think a lot of people don’t think about is how many pointless options exist in some games. never want to use or only use in combos. Some older games had defensive options that were never used because the benefits were low compared to the risks. Or sometimes you have movement options that almost never get used. Let’s go over the movement thing first. It’s a problem I have with many airdashers. The walk speed is often not very good. I understand why it’s that way in a game like Guilty Gear where you have to walk to get your one button throw, but I have no idea why various ArcSys, Examu, and French Bread games with 2 button throws also have slow walks. This ensures that only the run is useful in these games and you never see walking unless they’re right in throw range (GG) or you need to do a microwalk for a combo. So to combat this, I made walk speeds actually good in my system. This both makes throws more dangerous, but also makes defense a little better because you can simply walk out of the way of shorter range lows easier than in some other games where you’re moving to slow for that to work and either have to jump or backdash to avoid them. Another thing I did to eliminate useless options is only giving characters tools they actually need. For example, there’s a spotdodge mechanic. I specifically made that for characters with no reversal so they have something useful on wakeup. Said spotdodge doesn’t let you just whiff punish whatever and it also loses to throws, but it’s still designed to punish raw specials and negate chip (while not being centralizing), so I’m envisioning it having moderate use. Meanwhile, the Dp characters tend to have a roll instead. Said roll is good for getting behind the opponent or escaping from projectiles, but it is not as active, thus ends faster as the tradeoff for it moving you forward. Then there are things like every special having a unique purpose and not just being the same move, but with different juggle/damage value. For example, Gwen has 3 different command throws attached to 236A/B/C, but one is a combo throw
that replenishes her unique mechanic, another has to be done raw but grants a hard knockdown, and the last one is an anti-air throw. There are several examples of me trying to decrease bloat and knowledge checks, but you get the idea. Speaking of knowledge checks, that leads me to my final main point for now.Clear visual communication. A problem many games have is not telling the player vital info and they have to just memorize it. It’s why I think if you have stun, you should have a stun bar. In sf4, people just memorized and manually calculated stun anyway, so hiding that info isn’t really helpful. I guess it makes less visual clutter, but at what cost? Following that train of thought, my game has very little hidden info. The portraits flash when a stun is about to happen, there’s a guard gauge indicator, and there is a system for showing hitspark colors based on move types. Things like command throws having a different aura effect than normal throws. I’m also considering different hitsparks for highs and lows vs mids. A feature I like from Fantasy Strike is having colored sparks for different frame advantage. But in a game with chains, that may be difficult to implement the same way unless I just show it on the last hit of the blockstring and nothing else. Anyway, that would help to inform people of frame traps so they know to respect certain pressure. Another thing I was considering was even putting the health number on the health bar, given that some characters have different health values, but not sure on that one still. That’s mostly due to the RPG theme I’m going for.So yeah, that’s a bit of a long explanation, but that’s the general logic and philosophy of Blades and Beasts.
