40 to 60 games release on Steam alone EACH DAY.
About 350 games in the week around your release.
AAA release? Successful release AAA or indie, in your genre? BOOM you are done.
Also, not only are you competing with other new releases, but the entire backlog of games on every system a player owns. :)

Take all the "indie success stories" you can think of in the past 10 years and divide it by the number of devs in that time who have tried (again, 50 games a day, 1500 a month) and there's your historical likelihood of "making it."

Steam cut, higher self-employment taxes, no benefits, no retirement, AND to top it all off: Your sales diminish over time, so even if you hit this "mediocrity lottery" you'll have to do it all over again in a couple years.

Hey guys 6 figure remote tech job chad dev here, wondering how we’re all feeling this morning? I’m so annoyed that I have to do 1-2 real hours of work today before I can start working on my game but hey I guess that’s life. Gotta work hard to play hard as they say lol

I love this trick and abuse the fuck out of it to make my animation more juicy. You don't even need to draw new frames for it. You can just stretch the frames a little.

So I've been looking at supposed agdg games and other games those guys made
Apart from the risk of rain guy, basically no one had any other successful game since.
The real black pill of gamedev isn't just that it's insanely hard to make it, it's that having a successful game will not significantly increase your chances of having further successes.
More skills, more money, existing fan base... it's only marginally helpful.
>>
>>488264312
Have you looked into procedural animations? Your movement and animations look so samey and static it’s kind of off putting as someone who is just seeing this for the first time.

With procedural animations you could have one walking animation but based on the math/velocity of your character it would look like hundreds of different animations and really give life to your game whereas now it feels so stale and stagnate
>>
>>488263735
I don't see any trick. Both animations look identical to me. I'm ngmi

>Apart from the risk of rain guy, basically no one had any other successful game since.

very perceptive, yes I did. an anon yelled at me for having bad visual clarity so I've been fiddling with stuff. do you think I should make the game even brighter/add more contrast?
>>
>>488264556
You don't have to stop at /agdg/, you can even see the reluctance in devs like Notch, Toby Fox, Eric Barone, to really fully push with bravado and full confidence their next game. They know there's a very significant chance that it will completely flop or just be mid and forgotten, revealing their original success to be a lucky pull of the slot machine.

The trick is one is harder to make(drawing an intermediate closing hand) but you can get away with just barely moving the pixels, then closing the hand and barely moving them again for the complete animation. End result looks the same or better, for less hassle drawing.

40 to 60 tanks of propane are consumed by homes alone EACH DAY.
About 350 tanks in the week around Christmas.
Light a match? Gas or an electronic lighter, near your tank? BOOM you are done.
Also, not only are you competing with other fuels, but the entire battery of power systems the state owns. :)

Take all the "propane explosion stories" you can think of in the past 10 years and divide it by the number of customers in that time who have tried (again, 50 tanks a day, 1500 a month) and there's your historical likelihood of "blowing up."

Cables cut, lower CO2 emissions, no need for sunlight, tank recycling, AND to top it all off: Your personal cost decreases over time, so even if you hit this "alternate energy lottery" for one town you'd have to do it all over again in a couple years.

Made some adjustments, switched over to dialogic because I realized it does everything I need, and is way easier then doing it by scratch. It fit into my hand-built framework well.

Also made hands update with the first inventory slot. Feels very like minecraft now. I think today I am going to work on some very basic gameplay, just to see how these systems are fitting together.

objects close to the ground receive no indirect lighting from below whatsoever. pitch black. I wonder if this is an overzealous ambient occlusion effect at work or if there are perhaps faulty light probes placed underground in complete darkness and that's where this bizarre lighting is coming from.

I have come to the same observation but drew a very different conclusion: I'll just accept that lighting will kind of suck in my games because the world being dynamic is more important than realistic lighting. every game will have photorealistic lighting in about a decade so why rush in that direction NOW? why make static game worlds or 29 fps slop today when we will cross that threshold inevitably and then have realistic graphics forever, for free?

I was hoping this game could be sort of a "stepping stone" towards my dream game, but I'm slowly realizing that not only do I still not have the technical skills needed to make my dream game, I would most likely not be able to do it justice, and it would turn out really bad. There is literally nothing in this world that I want more than to create a good video game, but I just don't think I have the ability to do so.
thanks for reading my blog

I will always respect Jonathan Blow for kickstarting the indie boom but objectively he's a retard and will never make another good game as long as he lives

I play my game, what do I think? "Damn, this is pretty good."
Other people play my game, what do they think? "This is fucking awful, I hate the game, I hate the dev, I'm going to kill him."
Yet, /agdg/ thinks they suffer more than me. The entire species is against me, I stand alone here.

Jon Blow's Existential Nightmare
>>
>>488277770
>Blow may just be getting too old for this.
How dare you? He's still gonna make his own programming language and build his own OS and release his game with a dev cycle of 20 years he will release in installments

>In 2013, Blow began making a prototype for a single-player game that was not a puzzle game.In 2018, Blow said the game had 40–50 hours of playable content. He intends for Thekla to make the game using the game engine being developed for the Sokoban game, once it has matured. He plans to work on the game for 20 years, releasing it in installments. Each installment will make the game larger and more complex.

>I don't usually crunch real hard. I get it done in, like, I come in, I work, I go home. And a lot of people were living like, you know, really long hours, you know, the classic, we'll all come in at 1:00, and then goof around for a while, and then work late into the morn, you know, late at night

You guys realize that his "terrible sales" is something like 20,000 sales, right? Most of you would kill to get sales that high. Braid Anniversary Edition is a failure because of Blow's expenses being too high relative to his income. In terms of raw numbers everyone here should be jealous of him.

It's not a contest, how hard is it to comprehend people derive enjoyment when a high profile person they dislike fails? It's human nature.
If Haunted Chocolatier didn't sell(impossible ofc but lets pretend) people wouldn't be laughing about it in the same way because Eric is not a obnoxious insolent cunt like Jon.

Reminder that once the witness came out and it was getting flack for how pretentious it is with people saying they don't get it he said that when someone does something revolutionary most people don't have the capacity to understand it and only centuries later people look back and recognize how genius something was. How much of a twat do you have to genuinely believe that's the case for your puzzle walking simulator? It's not just self indulgence, it's pure cope.

It's ultimately untenable to run a gamedev business, that relies on real income, out of bubbleland California. 100k+/y minimum per head? For a product with sales that are ultimately completely location-independent? You are competing for workers with FAGMAN companies that will pay someone 400k to work for 2 hours a day. Meanwhile, you'd be overpaying at 50k/y even in developed countries in Europe and Asia.
This is not a remotely stable arrangement. It can't survive the withdrawal of infinite free credit.
I have been noticing that a lot of this "gaming industry recession" is really a reflection of a general bubble in Americans printing too much money to pour into their entertainment/propaganda industries as a whole, much more so than a general global games-specific bubble. You see the same pattern (jobs that are grossly overpaid on a global scale crumbling down) going on with movies, visual artists, writers, voice actors, etc. Notice how Nintendo (Japan) has been entirely unaffected by this "collapse".

"They" is the top level elites. "Gamergate" was an overreaction to the discovery that real world social structures, including video game development communities, are no different than mafias: it's all a bunch of "made men" exchanging favors and picking and choosing who to promote. "Corruption" is just how social structures work. If you piss off your patrons, yeah, surprise, they're going to withdraw their support, and unless you became big enough to become self-sustaining in the meantime, you're going to fail without that support.

I didn't forget anything, godot has several traps built into the engine that aren't explained anywhere, making things unique is one of them where it bloats the fuck out of your file size and memory usage because like the name says, it's fucking unique. Every instance of it is unique.

Another trap is that by default it saves everything as a .tres file which is a TEXT RESOURCE, it baloons your files by over 10x in size and makes load times a fucking nightmare as it parses the text instead of a binary which is the .res format.

The decisions of how they designed this thing is based around some ideal world where the engine is complete and has full external tool support, meanwhile we're like 30 years away from that being viable.

Why did you expect a resource made unique to still be linked to the original somehow? That's like being confused that ctrl+c ctrl+v'ing an image created a duplicate file which together take up double the space.
Also you seem to be confusing "local to scene" and "make unique", they aren't the same thing. If you make something unique it'll still act like any regular resource that is shared between instances, local to scene will be making copies at runtime for each scene instance.
From the looks of it you accidentally made texture files within materials unique instead of just the materials themselves which are pretty tiny since they're essentially just referencing a bunch of texture files and smashing them together, you can fix this by going into the texture and saving it as a proper file.

I extended Qodot to do something like that automatically for me, it's kinda convoluted but I can give it an enum that is then automatically translated into a choice property with properly named options. It can also split overly long enums into several choice properties that are then merged back when importing the .map back to Godot.
My honest advice is to just make things as much as possible within Godot and just use Qodot for the base layout because you'll always run across these weird edge cases with each thing you add.

The very nature of git makes it so that you always have a local repository because that's the only way to push to remote to begin with.
Git in itself is not a file backup but the concept of remotes effectively work as such, plus anyone who doesn't realize the value of being to review what changed and being able to revert anything is just a massive idiot, it's a huge boon to productivity and clarity.

I didn't say I got a bloated file size, I said it will happen if I use make unique.

I said I have a spiderweb of dependencies due to the fact that you can't edit anything without making them unique.

Also see picture for what happens when you break inheritance to an imported scene, everything in the scene gets saved as a text resource in the scene file which makes file size 10x. Godot's core design philosophy is broken and anyone who doesn't do a deep dive like this will end up having to remake their game from falling into so many traps.

the point of components is that you just stick in and use, editing them should be rare.

You type like Awokendev, the engine has faults but you're a noob so a lot is your fault, you have to stop getting mad and instead realize what you're doing wrong.
>>
>>488308883
The scenes are bloated because you are saving them in the scenes themselves instead of their proper files, I already told you the quick solution but you insist on being stupid.
Also you shouldn't be doing any of this to begin with, the model file import dialogue lets you specify if you want materials to be embedded or to be saved as separate files, and if you want to replace certain materials with external overrides in the Materials tab.
The 3D workflow needs a lot of work which they acknowledge but you're running into basic bitch issues because you didn't look at the import dialogue, it's not the deep dive you think it is.

>>
>>488310124
Godot fully supports editing individual materials for imported models but the workflow isn't very clear and the editor does lead newbies the wrong ways, which then go on to bitch about the engine being broken despite the functionality being there.

>>
>>488310901
Hello toby fox
>>
>>488310767
Imported models have their textures extracted into proper filetypes but you can also tell the importer to keep them embedded. Materials stay embedded but you can use Actions... -> Extract Materials which will create editable material files and automatically override the imported model's materials. It's actually kinda hard to save texture files since the editor constantly complains about it belonging to another file so you have to get out of your way to do it.
I think the main issue is that the editor simply doesn't tell you the importer window matters, you're far more likely to fiddle with the inspector because that's what you're conditioned to doing with most of the workflows, it's more a UI problem than anything.
>>
>>488310537
What are you making this in?
Learning to make a drag and drop UI scares me
>>
>>488312594
>which will create editable material files and automatically override the imported model's materials

Yeah and it will create them as text resource files > 10x increase in file size.

I haven't tried it myself yet, that's what the documentation says.
>>
>>488310710
YES
>>
>>488312870
You are mixing up materials and textures, materials are tiny shader files, textures are separate files by default which the material only uses as a reference unless you intentionally make the texture a unique resource (which will then be in the import folder as a .ctex). You don't need to ever save a texture file as .tres unless you are doing the completely wrong solution of bruteforcing your way through 5 warning messages because you aren't aware of the proper workflow.

If breaking inheritance from a scene saves the whole thing as a text file then I would expect extracting materials to save everything they depend on, including the textures to get saved as text as well. It's not like godot can pick and choose which parts of a GLB to load.

But I will try it and report back.
>>
>>488314802
>It's not like godot can pick and choose which parts of a GLB to load.
You can pick and choose exactly what you want from the GLB in the import window by telling it to skip nodes. Each individual material and mesh can be saved to individual files in the import window and each material can be overridden with already existing materials in the project. Use the damnable import window.

How do I cope with not being good at anything? As I enter the later years of my life I'm having to come to terms with the fact that I wasted my youth playing video games when I could have been doing something productive and developing myself as a person. Nope, instead all I have to show for myself are tens of thousands of hours played across various games on my Steam library.
I realize I can start today and try to improve, but even if I do I'm never going to be as good as someone who's been working since they were a child, constantly improving their abilities year after year. I feel like I've lost the race before it even began. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to be "the best", but I'd like to at least be at a level where what I produce can be admired for its quality.

I always suspected Braid as being a piece of shit that was at the right place, at the right time, with the right cute gimmick. Even at the time nobody gave a fuck about the deep meaning it supposedly had and Jon was depressed about that even while the game sold extremely well. Now that people aren't impressed with gimmicky shit, at least old gimmicky shit, it didn't sell well. It's not a master piece that holds the test of time.

I still respect Jon and think he does hold the key to success. Which is being super autistic and fill a niche that isn't being flooded. He was smart to ditch platforming. I have no clue how tough the puzzle genre is but would think his next game would sell decently well. But ya, Braid, Meatboy, Fez, all those games fucking piss me off. no. i've actually thought about this in the past where i've given feedback for games that are clearly ngmi but never really mentioned that they should just make something else instead. if it's good and fun for enough people then it'd likely end up being a commercial success sooner or later. unless the dev puts it up for free. i don't feel most games on here are gmi at this point in time. sure a few show potential but most just don't look like they'll make it

Not sure what I can say. I can describe what I did but it was quite a few years ago.
I used LibreSprite/Aseprite, I drew it black and white then added 1 shade of gray. I usually draw the lines with a mouse by clicking and holding then clean up them pixel by pixel.
I tried to keep simple and consistent round shapes for cuteness, so her face is a circle and the eyes are circles and the bangs and bandana tips try to have similar shapes with similar volumes.
When I draw pixel art I usually draw on 1 frame then create a new duplicated frame and draw on that as if they were save states then I move back and forth between the frames to see if the changes I'm making are actually improving the drawing
The rest would be general art advice I think.

I was just thinking how VtMB is a let down because it teases at giving you a ton of freedom and then makes you do really stupid shit as part of the plot. Almost all JRPGs, Zelda included, are Macguffin-fests where it boils down to " you gotta do thing because reasons "
Megaman Legends manages to feel pretty natural and anime throughout which is impressive for a game. Something really hands-off like Fallout 1 or Diablo or King's Field also lends itself nicely to solo-gamers preferred play-styles

I find this isn't true if you're a 1MA trying to do all aspects of game dev. Do art for a month or two and you don't remember shit about programming and the little quirks of how the engine works. Do programming and you forget the traps of asset creation and how to get around blender/substance painter etc.

>>488360427
the only point is that the first animation is intentionally bad and makes poor use of timing since a closing hand will naturally spend less time in the middle position and for some reason has one less frame to spend
this is such a common thing with these art quick tips they should start being shamed for it, where the "wrong" thing is wrong for completely different reasons than what the tutorial is trying to say because it's intentionally made worse

Technically struct fields should always be readonly once created due to weird behaviors with GetHashCode once theyre indexed (eg non mutable)
In practice, you want stuff to be inlined and mutable (if you have to make your own structs for perf reasons).

Genrally if you have to ask when a language feature is useful, you wont need it

I'm so tired. So, so tired. I can feel the exhaustion. Several days where I got ~5 hours sleep. Staying up to like 3:30am - 5:30am before going to bed some time after devving. All this extra devving so I can finally have a demo ready. Time and time again I set out to have a demo done but never get it done, it's been months since I attempted to have a demo made this year. Why does it feel so hard? Am I just being too much of a perfectionist? I have so much still to do and no idea on the difficulty of some of the tasks. I'm tried, I just want to sleep. The exhaustion has grown enough that I'm now tired before it's even midnight all while sitting in my chair. My sleep schedule seemingly getting worse while my tiredness has now arrived before I've even been awake for 12 hours. Why am I trying so hard? Do I really believe I'll get the opportunity of success I desire? What if I don't? I don't think my game is going to succeed anyways, it's just not good enough. I'm tired.

I spent about two hours puttin this together, got a pitch to make, fellas.

G-Man is a game that has both stealth and action. Your job is to go into the most dangerous situations and get the job done. First there's stealth mode. In each room, you'll have to sneak around enemies and find ammo packs to reload. You might also find things for bonus points like pieces of evidence and hostages to rescue. Watch out for death traps and other hazards! Once you're confident about the route you'll make within a room, it's time for action mode! Blast away all your enemies and shoot at props or devices to activate them to take down enemies for even more bonus points. Once you've reached the end of a stage, you'll need to escape, so make sure the route you want to take is clear. Jump down to safety in a getaway car and speed off into the night. Each stage would probably take between two to six minutes to clear, and there could probably be 20 stages total, cycling through five stages four times, with a different layout and tougher minimum requirements each time. Some hostages may not be gagged, which is dangerous because if they see you, they'll call out for help and blow your cover.

You'll be going up against the usual - mobsters, robbers pulling off a heist, street gangs, cultists up to no good, even aliens. The government only wants the best of the best - do you have what it takes to be a G-Man?

Thoughts? Questions? I'd like this to be my first game, I think it's simple enough to work.

>>
>>488366524
My main inspirations were games Nintendo themselves actually developed, that art direction of theirs. The main character was partly inspired by Jimmy "Popeye" Doyle from The French Connection.

Also I should have mentioned this, but you can see sprites of a flash from multiple directions. This is a split-second warning to the player of which direction a shot or hazard is about to come from. So for example if he flashes three times, two from the right and one from the left, that means two shots will zip from the right and then one from the left. I figure to make the game more exciting and tough that these projectiles would be FAST, so the character flash is stylish and provides necessary feedback to respond in time.

You seem confused.
The art tip is saying that it's easier to edit keyframes into inbetweens than it is to draw inbetweens from scratch.
It is not saying that using extra inbetweens will result in better animation.

That is the conclusion I came to. But the method of turning it? I have no idea which is the best/right way. I tried using Quaternions to rotate the velocity vector and that wasn't as smooth as liked though not sure if I was doing it wrong.

My current approach is to use slerp with an easing function to scale the rate at which the velocity vector turns. The duration and feel of the drift depends on both the rotation speed and the duration of the drift (dependent on deceleration). I wish I had someone to help with this.

>>
>>488371506
Maybe this is completely off base, because I have no experience in drift mechanics, but my first thought would be to add this frame's movement vector to the running total vector, and average it. That way, it creates a natural turn where it fights against the current velocity. I imagine for game feel you would want to tweak it depending on some factors.
>>
>>488371231
>lives in india
Not enough faecal matter
>>
>>488371506
>>488371224
Wouldn't it be easier to just lerp the overall movement speed based on how much the player turns the character? Like when you turn - if the new direction is a certain number of degrees or more different from the original heading - it applies a delay before fully changing the velocity.
>>
>>488371602
It's bad, but it's also the exact kind of mistake an amateur animator would make.
"It's an in between, so obviously i should just draw a new frame precisely in the middle of the key frames, right?"
The tip is advising against always doing that, and it's good advice.

I'm not sure about lerp but it does look like there is a delay but I thought that was just based on an easing function making the character's turn rate ramp up quickly as their speed decreased.

That is your current velocity. Say it's Vector3.FORWARD with a max magnitude of 3. When you press left, say your speed is 1, it would be multiplied by delta then added to your velocity. I think that averaging would be incorrect, so instead you just need to limit the length of your vector to the max magnitude you want, in this case 3.

Janky skeleton multiplayer sandbox.
Concept would be, that there is an mostly empty world with shit laying around and there is no UI. You play as a skelly and left and right mousebuttons would stretch out each arm. Crafting is done by picking up items by touching/holding them, which then makes other items showing where you could "attach" held items. Some crafting requires two or more skellies to hold up items and attaching stuff at the same time.
There is also no chat or names. Communicate using chalk or something like that.
