I need to get something publishable made by the end of August. Here's my plan. recommendations and lashing welcome.- Small, one-screen, graph-based worker placement game with fog of war. Think a very simplified version of Against the Storm with meeple placement. I've done 'resource file' and turn based-games in the past so I'm confident I can stay out of traps.- Art will be simple drawings made with vectors. Animations will mostly be tweens, particles, small shader effects.- Music will just be eerie ambiance I can put together in One bit dragon, sfx will be cobbled together from free dumps I have lying around.- 2 hours of work each weekday and 4 hours each weekend, increasing by one hour each week- No vices until the hourly quota is met- Putting up daily public logs here and in another place when I've completed work, including studious time-tracking- Have to walk every day(I jog but I think better when I walk)- If I fail to meet the above conditions every day, $100 goes to Autism Speaks for each failed day.

>>488445106Why Godot in particular? Any game is going to have its assets ripped and abused. There's no getting around it aside from just straight up not releasing.

>>488445410It's about effort. A 10 year old kid would be able to decompile your godot project in minutes.Assets for a custom engine would need a dedicated and savvy person with a couple of days/weeks to spare.
>froggy found a way to become more obnoxious
Anyone have good tips on 3d pathfinding in godot? Things like navigating walls or not bunching up.
>>488444412>pretend your assets were stolen>now you can make porn without consequences
>>488444412>implying nolgorb wouldn't make this himself
>>488446115Are you using a navigation mesh and nav agents?
>>488445417That's not the problem with good code. The problem with good code is that it often takes longer to write than bad code, since the good code is usually the bad code after you spent some time optimizing it. It's also often harder to understand as you might do weird unintuitive things for performance boosts.
>>488446095It's the code you should be worried when it comes to decompilation (hence the term). Assets are trivial to rip even for custom engines because the whole point of assets is to be easily accessible. You often don't even need to decompile anything to rip assets.
>>488445106>Imagine getting your assets stolenVideo memory rippers are a thing, doesn't matter what engine you use. Maybe don't make a pseudo porn game with furry big titty characters. I'm sure it's the dev himself making the porn since it's obvious he's a degenerate furry.
>>488444412here's a (You), enjoy
>>488446309Yes. I'm trying to make AI that runs away from the player, and it works fine in like 40% of cases, and the rest they just smack a wall and get stuck. Also, they don't collide with each other (I can fix this) s they bunch like crazy
>>488446115What have you tried?
>Actually made more content than I thought I would do today, mostly working on stuff beyond the demo while some stuff is being finished up>Going to have to finish writing something up later hopefully
>>488446115I've tried steering behavior with raycast avoidance, it helped a little bit with bunching up and running into walls. It's been awhile though, I have a feeling it'd be better to just have a repel field around each character instead of all the steering stuff.
>>488446568Main thing has been changing agent radius, wall slide angle, and just randomly tweaking sliders hoping it will help. Agent radius seems like the answer, but I have small holes I want some actors to nav through, so I can't make it any larger. I could make the actor's collision smaller though...
Good afternoon I am a developer looking to recruit someone to the position of rabid fanboy consultant. Since I'm a fairly well-adjusted person who doesn't care about drama and I cannot imagine myself obsessing over the creations of another person and developing cultish behaviour around any person and his creations I need someone who understands that type of mindset so tat I can cultivate it in my followers. Please emails me with your resumes. Thank you for your time.
>>488446851why not post this on /v/?
>>488446931I'm more likely to find someone with good work ethic here.
>>488445417Cumbersome fast code is just bad code.
Wait, the Braid remaster has commentary? Does our favorite developer (Jonathan Blow) say anything interesting in it?
>>488445106Assets are trivial to steal no matter what engine to use. Godot's problem is how easy it is to steal the code due to its open source nature. The open source actually works both ways too though, since if you make your own custom fork of Godot then the standard decompilers will no longer work.
>>488446548Show a picture of your navmesh where they hit the wall.Godot has a basic implementation of RVO (relative velocity obstacle avoidance) for other nav agents, but not obstacles. The navmesh itself should take care of static obstacles. Dynamic obstacles require you to implement your own RVO code which isn't that complicated as far as math goes.

>>488449967>>488450217The whole 'put your steam page up as soon as you have a basic prototype!' advice has become outdated and will hurt you. It's still touted as age-old wisdom despite all of the new evidence to the contrary. For one, pretty sure your spot on the popular new releases list isn't based on total wishlists anymore, but on wishlist velocity in the months surrounding your release. Seen way too many post mortems of people who had accrued tons of wishlists from a year or 2 prior, but very few surrounding their release date, and didn't get much visibility. Also, and this is really important, I've been seeing more and more reports from people with decent games that steam reviewers have been pushing them to have nice trailers and capsules, etc. before allowing them to even publish a page. Now, how the fuck am I supposed to make a page 'as soon as possible' if a steam reviewer demands my page look really good? Well, from what I've seen and heard, if a steam reviewer is being pushy with your page, it means they see sales potential in your game and are planning on pushing a bunch of traffic to your store page in the first week that it's up. I remember an account of one guy who half-assed his page(because his game wasn't due for release in a year), despite the reviewer badgering him to make it better. Well, turns out, the guy got a ton of traffic redirected to his page after it was published, but very few wishlists because his game/page wasn't in a polished state yet.

That was pretty rough, ShanghaiBros...Biteme had a lot of valid criticism and didn't seem to find many positive points, although the way they played the game would have caused frustration in anyone. Enter nightclub level, die partway through before picking up any cool weapons or at least turning out the lights. Skip the level and go to streets and then give up after a minute due to not knowing where to go and complaining about lack of direction (although they were three steps next to the first key and shotgun and on the path through the building).Todo list:Massive light boost. The last version was super dark and ugly. The henchman enemies blend into the background way too much. Some sort of weapon rebalance. I used low ammo on the tommy gun to force the players to learn about weapon switching early. I think it would be better if the player only starts with the pistol and then gets a tommy gun with a solid amount of ammo. The blue key in nightclub needs relocating, probably to a new extended room where it's the only focus. Players always seem to miss it.Lock streets until nightclub has completed. There's no way a player should be trying streets if they haven't beaten nightclub.Movement tweaks. I think the movement is more fucked than I realized. There's definitely some floatiness problems.
>>488452378>I have seen no evidence of wishlist velocity mattering more than total number of wishlists.I've seen multiple accounts now of people who had 20,000+ wishlists over the course of years who barely got any extra exposure on steam, and people who had several thousand close to release and got plenty of exposure. >You can make the shittiest Steam page ever and it doesn't matter. It's about when you promote it. >>488456025You should look up the Jobs vs Raskin fight over the Macintosh. Raskin wanted to set a price target, while Jobs wanted to just make the computer as good as they could.Raskin wrote this memo in response to Jobs:>[I want] a small, lightweight computer with an excellent, typewriter style keyboard. It is accompanied by a 96 character by 66 line display that has almost no depth, and a laser-quality printer that also doesn’t weigh much, and takes ordinary paper and produces text at one page per second (not so fast that you can’t catch them as they come out.) The printer can also produce any graphics the screen can show (with at least 1000 by 1200 points of resolution). In color.>The printer should weigh only a fraction of a pound, and never need a ribbon or mechanical adjustment. It should print in any font. There is about 200K bytes of main storage besides screen memory and a miniature, pocketable, storage element that holds a megabyte and costs $.50, in unit quantity.>When you buy the computer, you get a free unlimited access to the ARPAnet, the various timesharing services, and other informational, computer accessible databases. Besides an unexcelled collection of application programs, the software includes BASIC, Pascal, LISP, FORTRAN, APL, PL\1, COBOL, and an emulator for every processor since the IBM 650.>Let’s include speech synthesis and recognition, with a vocabulary of 34,000 words. It can also synthesize music, even simulate Caruso singing with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, with various reverberation.>Conclusion: starting with the abilities is nonsense. We must start both with a price goal, and a set of abilities, and keep an eye on today’s and the immediate future’s technology. These factors must all be juggled simultaneously. You could make the case that Jobs was vindicated by the Mac's success, but Raskin's argument does have logic to it: without a price target you can end up in feature creep hell if you're not careful.

>>488452418>marnix normies to start coming to this threadI worry about this as well.>>488453870The gameplay art looked worse compared to what I've seen in your trailer so idk if it's just the way the graphics were set or you went maxxed out on the graphics for the trailer via lighting tricks and closer than normal gameplay pics but yeah it doesn't look as good as the trailer does. Probably a lighting issue, the controls judging from how they played felt twitchy/excessive movement eg they let go of the mouse but the guy keeps moving for a bit after, which is not good. Maybe responsiveness is a better word for it. But they certainly don't feel like true gamers. I can pick up games from any genre and be able to play it without this amount of confusion they seem to face even though I don't play every genre at a large amount. With that said they are probably quite representative of the average nu-gamer which means you might need to polish it up by a lot.

Closest game to it is probably Brigador which is priced at 19.99, so depending on how much content the finished game will have I might price it closer to that, but it's still too early to say.I liked Marnix's stream. I thought it was pretty entertaining all around, though I can't say I want to put up a Steam page yet. Currently there's just too little content and the game is like 10% developed. >>488460835Because of my shut in neet nature I actually see inflation in real time. These prices are ridiculous! Even with a full time minimum wage job there is just no way I could live on my own in this state and several others from what I understand. My futurre looks like it's going to get a lot bleaker if I don't make it off gamedev or stocks, maybe crypto. I just have terrible odds when it comes to waging. That idea you mentioned could however work, but I'm not a fan of living near my tenants, they'll probably harass you over certain issues or create issues out of nothing. I never understood how so many renters have problems so frequently, or at least that's the vibe I get. My parent's house doesn't get this level of frequent problems so wtf are they doing that they need to contact the landlord so frequently? Anyways I really to make it, if I don't then my future from here on out will like be living in an abysmal state. Now if only my game showed a lot more promise compared to what it does right now. I just don't see it succeeding right now and I'm unmotivated on learning a bunch of new stuff to improve it further when it already feels like it's ngmi without a massive overscope.
>>488460835Sounds nice. Two things I can think of. Legally you will be residing there full time so government might treat you differently than you expect. Something like property tax etc. Or they can say your shed does not match criteria for housing etc.Second is the expenses you will have to cover might be more than you expect for the place you rent. And the renter can be late paying you etc etc. Be careful with money and try to save money.I'm kind of a similar situation. I have a place to rent and renting a smaller place to live. The inflation hit very quick and hard and I went broke. My credit card was closed etc. Last year was the worst year in my entire life maybe. Literally had no money to buy anything.

Do you guys have any recommendations for C# environments? I've just been using the shitty Microsoft one, and it doesn't mod well.Back about 20-15 years ago, I had an addon for some sort of java thing, I forgot what program it was, but over the years it got better and helped me auto fill mistakes, such as forgetting a second / in my notes or auto adding a ; when I needed it. The addon was super good for a while, but eventually got so invasive that it was detrimental so I had to get rid of it lest it actively fucked up my arrays and such. For C#, what should I use and is there a good copilot addon for it? Open source prefer, but I'll take anything at this point.>>488463048Think I should try /g/ for this? It's been about several years since I've been there.
For running, assuming I'm gonna have "run" and "dodge" on the same button, should I have it be>wait to see if button is released after pressing to dodge, else start runningor>do a dodge and then if the button is still held break into a runFormer looks less jarring, and is better for being able to run around on command (especially from standing), and situations where you want to run without the initial little linear dash forward would be very frustrating. The latter is much better for reacting to things, especially things that might be networked where every frame of input delay counts.obligatory engine screenshot to prove I'm actually working
>>488464023The latter is what Sekiro does, it's fairly intuitive. The former sounds like it's annoying since you only dodge on release, not press, so it could feel unresponsive.
remember to not use open source.
I want to start fucking around and making game, but I was wondering what engine to use. Is it general consensus to use Unreal for 3d and Unity for 2d or if you intend to have it playable on mobile? And is it right that Unreal can handle multiple enemy AI easier? Just from a quick search apparently Unity has DOTS but people've been calling it shit

>>488464217>The latter is what Sekiro does, it's fairly intuitive.Yeah, that was my exact thought. I also really like how in that game, dodging is secondary, and you use it for literally getting out of the way of attacks rather than I-framing through them, which is lame.>The former sounds like it's annoying since you only dodge on release, not press, so it could feel unresponsive. That's how it is in literally every Dark Souls game, + Bloodborne + Elden Ring. Long story short I got roped into subbing in for my friend's amateur volleyball team, had a blast, and I've been going back ever since. I've stopped thinking about game development altogether. I feel happier, healthier, and overall more fulfilled. This change has revealed to me that I never really liked game dev, I was only going through the motions and using it as a means to distract from my otherwise unfulfilling life.I'm posting this because I'm sure there are other people like me ITT who fell for the "Everyone should make a game!!" meme without first asking themselves if that's what they really wanted to do. To those people I say the sooner you can be honest with yourself and admit this isn't what you really want to be doing the better. Find something that actually makes you happy. To the majority of you who are perfectly happy making games, keep going. I wish you nothing but the best of luck with your projects. Maybe I'll play your game some day, who knows.

>>488473951You caught me, I'm actually a company of 55 professional dudes working full time, making a purposefully shit game.I wanted a steam page because I thought it would be good motivation to get it finished. It would be embarrassing to give up on a project if I already made the steam page. I'm doing this game for fun and also to release it as a product.

>>488476283No... Still 0/0
>>488474462Followup, if I wasn't having fun with this project, I would have no interest in completing it. Working on a game solo while also having a full time programmer job is hard. Everyone here knows that. My only goal is to finish the game and release it, because I want to make better games later on. I will never get to those games if I can never stick to one game and finish it. There is no reason I can't balance having fun making the game and also having the goal of releasing it on steam. I also absolutely disagree that I have no idea what direction my project is heading in. I have watched people sit down and have a blast with my game. I enjoy playing my game. When I play my game, I want to make more of my game. Shitty visual design and some bad reviews don't change that. Those can be dealt with in time.
>>488474057Good for you, guy.Recently I've been going back to karate since I need exercise + need to acclimate to normal human life since I might be going to some gamedev house with a girl that apparently also did karate.Thought it'd be nice to get the basics down again since I want to do some exercise while I'm over there. I can dev just fine right now, I just want to get back into society after all this time devving.I can kind of feel it. Hearing sportsbros and regular people at the sports centre, seeing people that I haven't seen in forever. I feel somewhat normal.Still gonna make my game.

Well, you can't just sort a Vertex[], shit gets jumbled. So the entire reason Quad exists is so I can do depth sorting on the Quads, then export them to vertices. It's actually worse to put them in a Vertex[4], since the array reference and indexing is slower than just accessing a local Vertex instance on the Quad itself.>DrawArgs (position, size, origin, rotation depth, texture, source color) => Quad>Quad (ABCD, texture, depth) => Vertex[] I've profiled this

>>488492152You got a few options:Lookup game jams on itch that're team-based, go to their discords, and look for people. You might not find normal people, but you can at least get some reps in working with artists for when you do find someone and ask them where other game artist hang out.Go to twitter and lookup artists on hashtags. Low follower count individuals are very likely to reply to your DMs and you can ask if they want to do a game jam first before they commit to anything. If you're part of some niche sub-community, like Earthbound or Touhou, find one of those mod projects, join it, contribute and suss out who's worthwhile, then poach them(more like seduce them into working on your project that'll make alot of money). I'm thinking about Undertale here. Also make sure you have an itch page with actual games that shows you're the least bit capable, it goes long way toward making people trust you're worth their time.If you can't do any of this crap, Then you're gonna have to put on some overalls and figure it out. Basic shapes, tweens, shaders, and particle effects can get you pretty far(Juice it up presentation, Thomas was alone), you might just draw stick figures(west of loathing), or you could try taking a simple texture painting course and use primitive 3D shapes that just have two gradients for your entire aesthetic. You can solve this problem if you try hard enough.

>>488492975You need to have spent your childhood playing with games and computers to understand what is going on under the hood and have a brain that is capable of breaking down actions/ plans into sequential components. I.e. a game is just a bunch of boxes moving around and on top of the boxes are pictures and models that make the boxes look fancy. The pictures either play a video like a flip book or the models play an animation and some sounds to go with it. The moving boxes have rules for scoring based on where they are in the world or based on some kind of spreadsheet formula. Once you understand this you can break down practically any game into the basic components needed to make it work and then it's just a matter of looking up how to make those components in the engine of your choice. It's not hard, just tedious and alot of work.
>>488493605No, a VN with a self-insert protag.
>>488492975Maybe start something simpler, like the level editor for TimeSplitters.
>>488493708Fair enough, I also like the art. I just think it isn't that impressive until there's a game that actually uses them.
understanding the principles that operate a game is easy, the problem is engines and coding languages are all made by autistic tech-brained retards who can't make an intuitive interface to save their livesexplaining what a block of code does in plain english is tens of times easier than dealing with the bullshit arcane syntax and vocab of actual coding
>>488488913I think I got it working for horizontal moving platforms, but it's completely broken with vertical moving platforms.
>>488492443A more legit criticism on tutorials is that they>Are not a strong 1-1 / Green Hill level to make the game look good>Don't use wordless storytelling when that's 1 of the only 3 good things about a platformer>Waste time in a speedrun>Only help children, but specifically children who have never played a Mario which is even more fringe
>>488494602>Waste time in a speedrunthis is a plus, I don't want speedtrannies doing that autistic bs to my game
>>488493446It's still coming out by September 6th, I'm gonna try and shoot for a little bit before that so I'm not buried by DD and SAGE
>>488493819that's a great way of looking at the whole process. I did not spend my childhood looking through games and computers, I was always too put off to learn that on my own but I do have a computer science degree so I have a decent understanding of that. I still genuinely have no idea how people used to learn this shit on their own, I barely get the under the hood stuff through my education.
How much do you guys a video game like say Billy & Mandy Fright Before Christmas costs to make?
Still need to grab an animation for it but feeling-wise the dodge is alright. Interacts fine with collision and physics, preserves momentum on the Y axis so it can fall and handle slopes, and locks other input while it's happening. That last one is kind of jank, and will be replaced with a state machine later.Todo: Make a system to buffer multiple dodges in a row, and rebind the dodge direction to the raw input rather than the direction of the character. That's it, I'm going to bed now. Good progress day
Whelp, time to feed the demon so I can get back to gamedev.
One day one of my games will be worthy of a reveal like this
>>488494980God I hate actions that wait after the animation or are tied to the animation.

How much does a video game actually cost to make? How much $$$ do you guys need to hire a team? a studio? a team of freelancers?
>>488495216It did okay for a basically dead genre
>>488495298No, old video games actually didn't bother waiting on the animation or sped up the animation so much that it didn't matter.Unity n Unreal's animations feel slower and heavier than Crysis.
i love it when fixing a persistent bug in one area causes another system to break. especially when i spend days trying to get the latter to work and thought it was solved.I JUST LOVE IT. I LOVE GAME DEV!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
>>488494736You should be able to go through all platformer games fast, that's part of the appeal. You learn how to play the game and then you can have fun blitzing through them and finding secrets. It adds to replayability and many people enjoy playing games from the very start. Not just speedtrannies but games that are meant to be learned and played quickly (all good platformers, remember?) tend to attract them.
>>488492443Move to a third world country after 3 years and live like a king with 600k accruing interest. Stop being bad with money.
>>488495319Technically automatic? The script stops accepting movement input and then sets the actors velocity to a set amoung (on a curve but w/e) for 0.38 seconds and then turns it back on afterwards. So, since it's not actually getting any movement input, it doesn't play the walking animation. Pretty convenient, all I need to do is slot in an animation cue before the timeline and it'll be good.>>488495541Less than half a second is pretty fast. I don't know if that's an engine thing, I think that's just a game design thing. This is as fast as dodge in Elden Ring or something similar, it just looks jank because1. no buffer2. the curve ends kind of abruptly atm so getting moving again afterwards is hardThis only took me like a couple hours to put together so it's not gonna be production level obviously.
