Sucks that background removal is so expensive. Kinda rules out using it for any kind of dynamic image generation (i.e. sprites in a dynamically generated VN). Hell, just manually making an image for each emotion is going to hurt; since you lose the alpha channel when putting an image through any other tool, you'd have to redo the background removal each time, for a total of 1560 anals if you want a transparent background image for each emotion. I could probably write a script to extract the alpha channel from the first image and apply it to all other images, but that only works if the pose doesn't change at all.Since the cost is roughly 3x the cost of everything else, I suspect they're using a pipeline of 3 different models. First they do declutter (this example basically confirms that, since it removes the text just like declutter would). Then they feed it to a model they trained to output a mask that can be used to remove the background. Then they apply the mask to the decluttered image and run it through another model trained to clean up around the edges (such as the green that bled into her boots in this example) and/or remove minor foreground elements that don't fit.These steps might be necessary if you want something absolutely foolproof that will give good results no matter what kind of initial image you feed it, but it's overkill if the image already has a simple background. Which I suspect will be the case 99% of the time, since people will mostly want to use it for their AI-generated images, where you can just prompt for white/simple background. Feels like a huge waste.

After all this time, I still have no idea what the best way to handle expressions on multiple characters is. In this piece, for instance, I wanted to give the catboy a smug expression, but after I got everything inpainted in and ready for enhancement, the expression tags were only applying to Sakuya here. Ideally I could just inpaint with low steps, then the expressions would remain at least semi-consistent through enhancement passes. Maybe really clever use of the male focus and yaoi tags could help? That's my best guess. The alternative is just removing all expression tags and letting the model do whatever it wants.
