So the default character movement component in Unreal would be equivalent to Rigidbody3d in Godot??

The Character Movement Component is a single part of the Character Actor. The CMC is more analogous to the Character Controller in Unity, which no one really uses because it's not good and a custom controller that uses Rigidbody is just better.
The CMC is packed to the GILLS with functionality, unlike the Unity Character Controller.

Genuinely, I have no idea how Godot works or what's inside it, so I can't help you much.
As best as I can explain it as a beginner, and Actor is a bucket in the game that carries functionality inside it in the form of Components. Actors inherit functionality from other Actors above them in the hierarchy, as well.
The Character Movement Component is a peice of functionality inside the Character Actor that gives it qualities such as friction, move speed and acceleration, jumping, walking, flying, and falling states, jumping functionality, gravity, custom movement events, et cetera et cetera.

Here's some small progress. I'm including some adaptive UI support for the menus on mobile devices, tested in landscape mode, 4:3 resolutions and portrait mode (it's a WIP of course, I still need to fix some the UI decorations). I had little progress last month so I hope to pick up the pace now hehe and move onto the more important stuff.

The biggest ones are in Unreal or machine code.
>>
Some of what I did today, learning with godot:
>at runtime, script scans a specific folder in game directory for resource files
>each file is loaded into a dictionary, and keyed by its filename (after the extension is trimmed off)
>options list is populated with these keys for the player to select from
>when one is selected, the script arranges the given name/family name fields in the proper order for that language (determined by a boolean in the resource)
>script then generates a name in that language, by drawing randomly from PackedStringArrays for given and family names in the selected resource
>by keeping it all modular with each language contained to its own resource file, the hypothetical user can pick and choose which ones they want to feature (or make new ones to mod in, only requiring a regular text editor)
This is my first time dabbling in finding/loading resources automatically via script instead of manually specifying them in the editor, so I'd like to imagine I'm making progress.
By the way, what's the function to check the class name of a resource in gdscript? Since I'm learning how to do this in a mod-friendly way, I'd like to get it to skip resources of the wrong class so that they don't get imported where they shouldn't and break stuff.

I don't get this, I don't get how the top is supposed to work. The bottom makes perfect sense, a heirarcy of classes doing handshakes to choreograph a complex animation interaction in a given context; it's logical and just boils down to looking for overlapping sets of conditions. And while the animation is playing each class locks itself out so other objects can't try and interact with it.

The top, I don't know what the fuck it's supposed to be. Does the player class spawn a chair when it plays the sitting animation? If the chair isn't an object then what stops some one else from sitting on it at the same time?
>>

>>488585729
The IK is a little jank, but the movement itself is fine. What I mean is, when walking down a slope it doesn't go airborne for a split second and take away turning control, nor does that dash misbehave and go short going up, down, on, or off the slope. All good things!
Still need an animation for the dash.

>How do I make my game fun

It's simple, actually, if you learn board game design stuff.

You need a goal, something to strive for.
Good ideas are the same as board games.
Reach sooner a place.
Get bigger score.
Kill more enemies.
Collect treasure.
Survive something.
Defeat an oponent.

That's it.
That's the goal your game should strive for.

But beside that, you need an oposite force that will try to stop the player at any cost.
Waitufs, traps, monster girls, lolis, black people, etc.

Besides this, and this is the core secret nintendo sauce.
Your game needs to be elegant.
Few rules to memorize, but maximum output of results.
Like chess.

And later but not least.
Your game need to have some kind of dexterity goal, something that keeps the low skill players from doing what the best players can do.
Seems counter intuititve, but having dificult skills to perform, becuase of luck, or because of dexterity, like a fighting game combo, is a major aspect of why some videogames survive the test of time.

Trying to learn differences between arrays, strings and char in C is a fucking noodle fest.

Might not work for whatever game/s you're making, but I've currently got my prototype VN setup working like so:
>UI is anchored to top and bottom of screen
>visual part (background, characters, etc) is forced at 16:9, scaling to match width of window
>instead of just black letterboxing above and below it, uses a stretched copy of the background image and blurs it with a simple shader
This seems to work for aspect ratios taller than 16:9, but not anything wider, so if it's wider then I'm just giving it regular letterboxing on the sides (sorry ultrawide users)

How is a GOAP system not just a giant fucking nested if statement? The weighting of your preconditions and 'goals' just determines the order of the ifs and elses. Why do these programmer faggots parrot this shit as if jesus is walking on water in front of them when they don't see the pane of glass he's standing on? Just because you obfuscate the hierarchy from yourself using classes doesn't mean it's not there; the behavior isn't emergent, it's rigid and following a predetermined sequence every time, it's just that you choose to stay ignorant of what that sequence is.

I need a physical console release. If I can release my game on some sort of cartridge, then I'll have made it.
In 50 years no one will give a shit about the 30 gorillion no-name indieshit slopformers buried on steam, but there's always someone collecting and emulating old console games. Even the most obscure garbage shovelware on the Atari will have some guy making a youtube video about it, and every console library has a bunch of obsessed autists digging up "hidden gems".
If I can just get my game on a console, it'll never be completely forgotten.

Would/do you guys use AI during game dev? For art, I wouldn't. I'd prefer to have pretty precise control of how my textures and whatnot turn out, and also, simply put, using it is bad PR, at least right now. That said, I'm not above using it for help coding

Actually 30 is grandma age. You see here in the state's, with parental permission and court permission you can get married at 15. Pop out a kid, wait 15 years, your child gets married, and wahlah just like that you're son gave you a grandchild. You're now a grandma :)

Could even be a great-great grandma at 60. Why make game? Just pop out a bunch of children and let them give you the comfy life.

Everything's been taken, colony sims are a pretty well-established genre. If you want to stand out it's going to have to be with the details of your setting, not the general theme. Instead of "dwarves" do "dwarves who take trains everywhere" or "dwarves who farm giant mushrooms instead of mining" or "dwarves who're especially obsessed with magic and alchemy" or some shit like that.

Can I get a realistic prognosis for my idea? I want to build a milsim first person shooter that streamlines much of the mechanics in games like Arma 3 and Escape from Tarkov's with elements more commonly found in tactical shooters, while adding advanced reload mechanics like Receiver. Overall I wanted to aim for an N64+ level of graphical fidelity to make things easier on myself (think player models like Pseudoregalia, or The Big Catch), and an extremely focused set of a few weapons for MVP/Demo and a small area to prove concepts work. I already started working on some models for guns and whiteboxing a level, as well as sketching out rough drafts for the character model ref sheets.

The iddea seems good, but that is alot of fucking work even with the lower quality models.
Mostly in terms of testing and what not. But if you can do it, it's a good idea.
However you're going to really need to lean into strong appeal to make this work, especially if you lower your model quality. There's alot of gun nuts and other like players who'd play your game, but if you lower the visual quality you need to either make the enemy AI extremely competent and interesting for them, or have really solid setpieces and gunplay.
And the type of AI matters. Sounds more like you want to do FEAR AI rather than like Tarkov or something. Because you're making levels, not "zones"
>>488603603

This is what marketing is btw.
Spending 100k, releasing podcasts, adding hours of commentaries etc. That's just content. All you need to do is say just one attention grabbing sentence that will look good in the title of a news article.
I wonder if it will have an effect on the sales. We'll have to keep an eye on the review counts on steam starting july 31. There is a peak at july 31 but you can argue that it may not count. Altough speaking negatively about your own game might deter people from checking out your game. They'll say "If it sold like dogshit it must be bad so I don't have to check it out.".

Left is Godot, Right is Blender Eevee.
I don't mind shadows being a bit heavy but right now as is alot of the shadows are really harsh.
Been a notable issue for a while. Then again it's not a big deal for my game, I do want to use a lot of shadow anyway.
But still. Raising ambient lighting too high effectively would kill any chance of a nice dark zone in the game. So really I gotta be careful about how I use shit.

The other notable issue is the fog. The fog really is apart of the charm .
I'm going for machessemo horror mixed with American McGee's Alice style wise.

Give your enemies a bit more telegraphing and make ghosty boy a little bit less skitzo movement wise and I think you're set with stuff like that. Ok so you don't know anything about graphics and are criticizing Godot for what is a limitation of all game engines because what you are looking for is a real time lighting system which no game engine had until ray tracing. Godot does have one, but it's not as good as ray tracing. Go into your environment settings and turn on SDFGI, also while you're at it turn on SSR.

What games traditionally did to get around not having real time lights is use shaders to simulate rim lights and such or the ambient light like you said. You're going to get the same issues in unreal or unity.
>>
>>488607651
Okay then.

- Blueprints are not an easily transferable skill. Coding in Python is. So it's easier to get motivation to do the later.
- Coding in Python is easier than Blueprints, since I can actually check code examples, copy paste stuff, etc. With blueprints you need images, which is slower.
- Being able to work on a train. With Unreal I need to be at home, with my big boy computer.
- I find it easier to back up and version control a smaller project. So I know I won't lose progress, which motivates me further.

That being said, I will be happy to leave Renpy for a more appropriate engine once I outgrow it. I just want to get the ball rolling, form the habit and make a game.

Yours looks nice, btw. See you on DD!

I dislike him. All his takes are just pandering to the masses / populism and as others have pointed out he is a streamer first, game developer second.

>What's that, Patreon is fucking you? USE KO-FI! (they both use Paypal as the main payment processor, he neglects to mention this) (I doubt he has any proof that it's a better idea either, all this to get around an already minimal fee)
>Piracy? Yeah, it's good, because I don't make money from my game anyway. Woo piracy it's not a problem that in certain parts of the market, people would sooner use a pirate site than ever dare browse games on a legitimate website. It's perfectly fine to convert normal consumers into more pirates who won't buy anything!
He sounds very knowledgable and sure all the time but that means he's just saying shit even when he doesn't have experience with it. He has a limited viewpoint and he oversteps the boundaries of what he knows. He's the game developer equivalent of a clown, a very rich clown at that. There's no problem if he wants to talk about his experience at blizzard but he needs to humble himself about other topics.

Part of the idea was using that style as a form of developer art until I can get some help later on after I've got a solid MVP and demo, so I can focus more effort on making the AI challenging and feel "right". Though it's technically pseudo-open world just in an small environment to facilitate the gameplay concepts I wanted.

Best I can describe it as is the distilled gameplay concepts of Arma 3 Antistasi but as a police procedural game streamlined to play a bit better with some lower fidelity graphics to lower development time for the time being until I can add polish.

>>488604703
Bullet drop, random weapon spread, Red Orchestra 1/2 hip fire dead zone, no aiming reticle non-ADS unless pointing at an interactive object or item, realistic mechanically detailed 3D models (albeit low poly), Mars gravity physics, stance mechanics, advanced reload mechanics ala Receiver 1/2, dynamic missions to support the police procedural concept.

>>488604968
No, not really. I'm just asking about the challenge. I have some experience making games, just nothing I've finished or was happy with because I lacked something I was interested in without being "dream game" tier. This seems to fall in that sweet spot of being interesting while not mechanically too hard at my skill level. Though based on the above, and the fact I wanted to take some inspiration from NeoTokyo and Ghost in the Shell (1995) I don't think it's /too/ generic.

I'm feeling really unnerved and daunted because I'm starting to realize that this entire situation is like a hell on earth. Why are there so many games being made today? Do you realize that there might have been hundreds of games that were dropped by their developers over the last 4 years because the climate convinced them that their game is not worth making?
I want to give Jon Blow a hug and tell him everything will be alright, because what we're going though right now is not normal. It's possible your game is good but it gets lost in all the noise of our sick and dying society. There are so so many great games that get buried under mountains of literal shit made by grifters like marnix. Truly we are in the end times.

if you arrived here anywhere in the last 3-4 years chances are you don't belong here and this isn't the hobby for you. You're doing this just to do something with your limited and fading time. I'm convinced that only about 5% of agdg devs actually care about what they are doing (which is still a much higher percentage than the average)
This is why I have intense respect for people like marmo and bokudev and trainwiz - because I know that they belong here and have sunk years of their lives into it. They are dedicated to the craft. They didn't just show up when it got trendy. They live and breathe this artform. It's time for you clowns to start leaving

If oversaturation scares you then you shouldn't be making a game to begin with. Anyone with that mindset is only capable of creating derivative slop. copy pasting this from another thread where I gave nutrition advice
(this is thread related because your productivity as a game dev depends on it):

nutrition (ideally):
as little pufa (polyunsaturated fat) as possible, vitamin d+k supplementation (10k iu a day for a few weeks to get start then lower to 5-8k), supplement thiamine, b3, b7, folate, zinc, magnesium
your diet should include dairy as a staple (glass of milk with every meal, cheese, butter, ice cream, etc)
potatoes, fruit/juice, sugar are preferable carb sources but regardless of the source carbs should comprise *at least* 60% of your calories
eat ruminant meats and avoid eating too much pork or chicken because their fat is mostly pufa
eat eggs every day, the yolk in particular is a crucial source of vitA
eat liver (or liver pate/foi gras) at least once every couple weeks, oysters too if you can
fish once or twice per week
if you cant get liver try to eat more eggs
spinach and chocolate are great magnesium sources but its generally good to supplement mag glycinate
salt your foods to taste
use coconut oil or butter for cooking
cut out fried foods completely

>About 20 minutes on art.
>140 minutes on camera controls, fog of war shader, throwing in some random edge drawing.
Trying to do fog of war so that only settlements and their neighbors are visible. I thought I had a solution, but it breaks when zooming in or out.
The approach is to pass a series of world coordinates to the shader along with the camera position and zoom, then do the fiddling to get it into something UV sensible. Translating things by camera position and scaling it down by the target screen resolution works, but I'm not sure how to factor in zoom, which is a vector2 value describing how the screen is scaled, probably just need to think on it more.
I'm also unsure if this is the right approach, since there's some funkiness with Godot's Camera2D position that causes things to be "tugged" in the direction of the camera move, even when using 'get_screen_center()', and the UV for the color rect is obviously warped, which I'm ignoring for now.

I'd say I'm in the end-game now of Necrovale. Most of whats left is balancing and end-game modes. It's been about 6 months since EA launch, and I'm quite happy with how things have turned out. My "mediocre performance" target for 1 year of release was about 12k units, and it's already at almost 19k, far exceeding my expectations.

Really excited to start the next project, I feel that I've learned as much as I have from this project as I did from Frauki. Hopefully that knowledge will make an impact on the performance of the next game, too.

Cute

fbx is a proprietary format, so any engine with an open source license will have that "problem". on the other hand, if the 2 minutes it takes to set the importer are enough to make you cry and shit yourself, no engine will be enough for you to make a game.

/nodev/ here. Is it possible to use Vulkan in conjunction with x86 assembly?

Diplomacy became mandatory once the swords became nuclear weapons. You can't just hit people with the bigger stick anymore.

I need to write a VN but I have never written anything.
Will just writing some stories over and over make me better at writing like it how it works for art or do I have to do I absolutely have to do boring things like reading books and getting people to read what I write and give me their opinion?
>>
>>488637102
If you have to ask, you probably shouldn't do boring things like reading books and getting feedback.
Just skim a couple of vns to get a general feel and ask chatgpt to write a draft for you

Fortunately you would say my game isn't anime because it's not made by a Japanese person, therefore none of what you said applies to my game.
Thank god for that!

Reading books will help expand your vocabulary.
Practicing every day does help. Try to aim for a certain amount of words a day and just write about anything. Personally, I keep a dream journal.
You should also learn theory, basic rules like "show don't tell" and traditional story structures are extremely useful.
I'm not sure at what stage you should be looking for feedback.

read robert mckee the story and lajos egri dramatic writing and the hero's journey.

also TV tropes wiki has some pages on how to write certain genres, and good shit like character bands.

Learning the grammar of storytelling will make it easier to understand why an anime is boring or the story sucks.

At the very least read "the classics" (Homer, Dante, Shakespeare, etc.) since 99% of literature (including your nihongo VNs) derives from them in some way.

how do you come back to your project after 2 months without touching your code?

That's a good idea I even have some vn I bought because it had cute girls but never played because reading but I can do it now
Using chatgpt is against my religion though so I can't do that

I see, thanks for the advice. I wrote a few dreams but it's very rare for me to remember them by the time I wake up unless it's a nightmare and I rarely have those. I will try to write something every day.

I will try at least taking a look at them but but if they're too long and wordy chances are I will get bored and drop them halfway. I've pretty much only finished reading fairy stories.

Grimm's Fairytales are a must now that you mention that. Also Tolkien.

Had an epiphany: agdg devs aren't interested in each other's games, but they might be interested in similar inspirations and influences? What if instead of talking about your own games, you talked about the games that inspired you and the things you're trying to build upon?

>>
>>488648715
the catch is I'm one of the aggy daggys making an 18+ game, which is part of the reason I haven't had time to draw a lot of the environments, since the fans are always asking for new content and not new rocks and trees

thread's about to die by the way if you're serious you can reply in the next thread, or find me elsewhere, I'm the dev for moncurse (check demoday 57)
