I reworked the scoring system (previously it only recorded your accuracy). Hit a note at the perfect time, you'll see a blue circle and earn 50 points. Hit a note, but not at the perfect time, and you'll earn 25 points and see a yellow circle. Miss, and your combo and multiplier will get reset.
Someone who played the game said it was sometimes hard to tell which note you're supposed to press next. I was thinking of adding a small arrow pointing to the A/S/J/K circles at the bottom, corresponding to whichever note is next, although it might just get in the way. I'll have to think about it some more.

40 to 60 games release on Steam alone EACH DAY.
About 350 games in the week around your release.
AAA release? Successful release AAA or indie, in your genre? BOOM you are done.
Also, not only are you competing with other new releases, but the entire backlog of games on every system a player owns. :)

Take all the "indie success stories" you can think of in the past 10 years and divide it by the number of devs in that time who have tried (again, 50 games a day, 1500 a month) and there's your historical likelihood of "making it."

Steam cut, higher self-employment taxes, no benefits, no retirement, AND to top it all off: Your sales diminish over time, so even if you hit this "mediocrity lottery" you'll have to do it all over again in a couple years.

>He thinks that indie gamedev can provide a sustainable primary income in 2024

3dchads are either smarter and better than the average dev turning out generally better games, or they are profoundly worse in every way. Even cris attempts to use 3d graphics, but produces unplayable garbage. So 3D devs occupy both ends of the bell curve while 2d devs are the midwits. Any big successesful or popular games are going to come from the right side of the bell curve, which includes some 3d devs.

Is that a sufficient answer?

It's been 11 mins since it was posted, and it's a pretty niche question, plus a retarded one since we don't know anything about anon's game or his target audience. How are we supposed to know if it's worth optimising his game at low settings? It's probably impossible to know until launch. If 100,000 Brazilians buy the game then it is/was probably worth optimising for lower end machines. But who knows

In roguelite fashion, I was thinking of character skills being customizable by obtaining boons you can add to your spells/skills. Example, you could have a healing spell with an empty skill slot, onto which you could add say a haste spell, so now your healing spell also gives haste.

Kinda badly explained here but the idea is you can kinda theory craft builds depending on what skills and whatnot you obtain during battles.

- 20 minutes on fixing a bug with the building creation menu showing up in the wrong spot
- 103 minutes making the edge generation into a drunken walk
- 20 minutes restricting building placement to only nodes connected to other nodes that contain buildings
- 82 minutes of switching to an adjacency matrix for tracking edges instead of a using tuples in an array
- 14 minutes of refactoring
I was fiddling over what to do for random generation and just decided, for now, the best approach is just the most expedient one until there's proper gameplay that'll inform the decision better. Also love the name 'drunken walk' because It expresses both a naive graph transversal and the nature of game dev in more ways then one.
The bug with the building menu happened because I was sticking the UI element on another draw layer that wouldn't be subject to the camera's zoom so it would always be at the same size. I forgot that and after fiddling with transforming the node's position from "camera space" to "UI space" for a bit I just went back to the old impl.
Adjacency matrixes are good. The time complexity of a linear search probably doesn't make a difference right now, and may never depending on my graph queries/map complexity, but I'd rather have done it rather then agonize over the idea forever.

It's unironically over for me and the few, maybe several, other devs with <100 wishlists. What am I even doing still sinking time into this project!? I have to finish it before end of next year. I can't even release it in its current state without possible backlash for how much of a tech demo it feels like.

I'm talking to people about the game here and there, but I'm not going to spend all my time shilling the game or whatever. I'm not trying to make any money, honestly I was thinking of making it free.
>id probably abandon ea asap and go full release.
Why would I do that? Early Access gives off the right impression to people buying the game (i.e. it's not finished), but if people do end up buying and enjoying the game then I can finish the things I want to do and release the 1.0 version.

What does he say about twitter and how it affects game sales? I refuse to use reddit for marketing since I dislike the majority of redditors with "that" mindset and reception seems to be garbage unless you have a gmi game which makes it rather pointless besides maybe a few extra sales on a game that'd likely already do well. I dont want to advertise on twitter, feels like I'm walking through a lot of freaks, not all, but a lot of them give this vibe I dislike.

devs are gamers too. Autistic retards
Besides, you're not looking at the bigger picture: a lot of people are game developers, but only 5% of all of those are serious developers. The rest are bottom feeders who exist to support the chosen few. If you're a serious developer then you will attract subhuman developers who will buy your game because that's their role in the hierarchy

You do but there are plenty of content creators on there looking for the next big thing to fill the algorithm's infinite apetite with. It's worth talking about what you're making even if sometimes on twitter it feels like shouting into the void.

their games aren't appealing to people who play games. Their social media presence might be meme-worthy and wacky and high-adrenaline but that doesn't mean a game that anyone wants to play. Just make a game that people would want to play and you're fine. The thing you need to understand is that people don't follow most developers because they wanna play their game - They follow them because they make their development interesting to follow, but that doesn't make their game good.

You guys like to imagine this as some kind of victory, it's not

The average agdg autist is going to be dropping his spaghetti if he meets a fan girl, you won't know what to do with yourself.

Or maybe you'd get to touch her, and then bam you're cancelled, she #metoo'd you to raise her profile.

Or most likely... You get caught sending dirty messages to a minor (highly likely itt).

Or maybe you do find a gf after making it big, congratulations you got into a relationship with a woman who only wants you for your money, how horrible.

But then imagine actually getting your redhead 3d artist gf who genuinely loves you but you lose her because shes insecure about all the fangirl whores online trying to get your attention online.

agdg is not made to play this most dangerous of games, suddenly finding yourself with more female attention due to a successful game... it's a poison chalace.

Get a gf before you're successful, use her to pay your bills while you dev. It's a proven successful gamedev methodology.

>tutorial hell
doesnt exist
the only people who run into this are people who dont actually have any specific game/application they want to make in mind and instead think they have to learn everything first before actually doing anything
when its the other way around: you have an idea, break it down to the smallest manageable parts, look up tutorials and read documentation for those specific parts, and learn by doing
now you do need to know the fundamentals of programming, so maybe find yourself some exercises to cover the basics if youre truly a codelet

>What's the next level? Learning UI? Loading different scenes? More advanced enemy AI? Is there anything on how people structure their projects so I don't fuck it up terribly and have to refactor later?
does the game youre working on need a UI yet? do you need to "load different scenes" yet? does your game need more advanced AI? is your game a mess that needs to be refactored?
oh wait, you dont actually have a game youre working on, so none of this shit is relevant nor matters
this is what I mean by people thinking they have to *learn everything* before they do anything
its the mentality of someone whos clearly never made anything before
you need to just start working on something instead of treating this like some pointless academic exercise, youre not in school; this is work

>>489035562
animation playback works, yeah, but anything more on top of it is major a pain in the ass, IK completely overwrites bone positions disregarding the animation, I remember there was skeleton modifier stack before which they removed for no reason

I was fucking around with IK a lot for the past month and the only viable solution for such trivial thing as feet aligning with stair steps (inb4 youtube tutorials, if garbage results they produce please you, sure) was to bake IK target transforms in separate animation player with then altering their positions based on raycasts, and it won't even scale when it comes to blending different animations together (and could easily desynchro as well), thank god that things such as 3rd person weapon aiming could be easily faked with 2d blending and some trigonometry

the other thing is that bone attachements sometimes lag behind, but I turned off physics interpolation with my manual interpolation only kicking in when process fps is higher than physics fps, which mainly resolved the issue, but desynchronization still happens from time to time

and even funnier, the other engines I tested that aren't unreal or unity are even fucking worse lol
flax completely fucks up root motion while mixing, while stride requires you to write your own animation mixer

Unreal has a lot of stuff built in that you'd have to make from scratch in Unity.
As a beginner, I'll use the Character Movement Component as an example.
It handles slopes, has variables for running, walking, crouching, swimming and flying movement modes built in, a basic state system for keeping track of what it's doing, and a custom movement option for extending it for your particular needs in BP with minimal effort.
The systems built into unreal are very robust, but when it comes to making your own classes you're going to hit the fairly significant hurdle of unreal C++ and very shit documentation.

nta but thanks for the wake up call, anon. I've been wasting my time trying to "hone my godot skills" by doing tutorials and game jams, but in reality I'm neglecting my main game project and mostly spinning my wheels.
The next things I need to do for that are:
>input buffer for fighting moves
>animations for player attacks and movement
>make player model (is a capsule now, need to learn blender or put in a placeholder for animation)
>add more platforming objects and
>add more enemies to my test level
>start building levels from the sketches I've made

One at a time anon, one at a time.
I've eben working on my character controller, and I've divided up the work into tiny pieces.
First, I got the basic movement and a dash. Then, I polished the dash until it worked how I wanted. Then I tweaked the air movement. Then I added animation.
All these happened like one day apart from each other, but as I learn and work daily my speed is slowly getting better. Divide and conquer anon, one at a time.
>>
>>489037448
>does very minor gamedev success mean you're basically rich?
yeah, you can buy your own place for like 50k and depending on where you live rent and expenses are cheap so even if you only manage to make $5-10k a year you'll be able to comfortably work on your games full time.
>>
>>489040483
>>489031215
I would like to present partial opposition.
continously learning about your tools is a good idea. not only once you encounter a problem you can't solve with your current tools because many square problems can be hammered into a circle.
have a main game but continue to study on the side. always study.
implementing things you know how to do and studying new things require different types of energy. You don't wanna get into your new project with 0 knowledge about the tools you're gonna use and then hit a wall in studying energy but have nothing you can implement.
>>
>>489038590
Yeah I suppose that's fair. Though if I'm being honest I feel like character movement is such a basic (in terms of design and player expectations) thing that there's no reason for every engine to *not* have something like it just available out of the box.

I will never not take an opportunity to bitch about Unreal's documentation.

Tutorial hell exists because, for any complex system, there are countless relevant topics one can study for to an infinite level of depth. Your original advice wasn't very specific and can easily lead to the idea that "you should just start making the dream game you want to make", which is terrible advice for a complete noob. A complete noob is far too stupid to design their own game. They need to first somehow gain enough competence over the various tools and techniques available. This is why the most common advice from experienced yesdevs who have actually released games is to start by making Pong or Angry Birds or maybe JumpGob or Blorb and then make a few game jam games.

>A complete noob is far too stupid to design their own game. They need to first somehow gain enough competence over the various tools and techniques available.
I said that you should know how to code in my original post, I would also add that you should have some self awareness and the self restraint to keep your first project simple, but still something youd enjoy playing. Watching a tutorial or two about the basics of the engine GUI and whatnot is fine, but you should move on to trying to make your vague (but simple) idea as soon as possible. You should also expect your idea to change or for yourself to pivot to a different game idea, this is fine and pushes you to learn.
I initially had an idea for a 1st person exploration game like Babbdi, nothing fancy, so the first tutorial I watched was how to make a 1st person game in Godot (the engine I chose). 10 min tutorial. Followed it, made my basic scene, and by the end I had the fundamentals of the engine down. Then I made a little map to play around with in Blender, imported it, messed around some more. Then I pivoted to a different idea which Ive been working on for 3 weeks now. Ive watched other tutorials throughout that time (spent the most time on a water shader tutorial), but every tutorial Ive watched was relevant to something I was working on.

basically, if the tutorials youre watching feel like "hell", its because your subconscious is screaming at you telling you youre wasting your time, and you would learn much more rapidly if you went directly to doing what interests you

The point is that without the proper prerequisite domain knowledge, you are incapable of designing a viable application. You're making a clone of an existing small, free game, meaning you do not need to design anything, which is the right thing to do. Most retards here will read your original advice and think that they should start by making souls-like morrowind.

I gonna report my progress so far:
> I learned to use Interfaces, C# events and Scriptable Objects, so I decided to rewrote a lot of the code and manage to optimize the enemies to only two small scrpits.
>Added a lot of new stats stats for the player and all of them are working accordingly.
>The summoning effect was upgraded, now, monsters aren't moving while being summoned.
>Created a code for the monsters to ambush the player with a surprise group summon.
>Critical Damage is now colored in red text.

Tokens feels more thematic, if what I'm seeing is like a blueprint. If you do decide to go down that route, imo you should arguably make the faces of the tokens non-colored sort of like coin engravings though there's the possibility of readability issues.

The old-fashioned, and probably dumb way of doing it frame by frame. I just tried to study how metal slug did it but I'm not even halfway to getting there. Working on polishing the level selection hub again. Decided to let the player go through the first 5 zones in any order to unlock the final 6th zone instead of linear order of zones I was doing earlier. (Beat demon souls yesterday and got inspired by its 6 arch stone zones for non-linearity)

I've finally done it, after 1 year of development I've completed the doctrine system. So, why did it take so long and why is it a big deal?
1. It's fully algorithmic. The entire tree is made up of nested math equations. If you want to change the shape, or add more leaves, just add another equation.
2. The entire tree can be updated from the editor. If you want to add a new doctrine, just add a scriptable object and include it in the manager script. Everything else updates automatically.
3. Aesthetics can be updated from the editor. Change all the backgrounds? Add new colours? Change the outlines? One click from the editor.
4. Highly optimised. Runs in O(1) time. Not a big deal in it's current size (about 150 nodes), but when its fully completed, there will be over 1000 nodes.

This is the major gameplay mechanic I was looking to implement. It's done now so hopefully I can get the demo out in time.

Have had this idea to make a game about sailing. What are fun mechanics for a comfy sailing game? Not going to be hardcore simulator though.
>>
>>489068060
Just look up how to actually sail and then turn the real things into game mechanics

I want to make a ff1 clone game to learn how to make games and program at the same time. I don't want to use rpg maker for that though. Not sure if I should use an engine at all. Does that make sense? Can I just pick up something like c++ or java and make final fantasy 1? Will it be hard? I have the autism to grind it our for sure. I just need to know if I should do that or start somehow different.

im gonna make an anime and it'll be about anime girls making my games (in japanese)

You have a point on how much legwork the Mario brand does carry that, but I feel that streamers crave Party like games, and if you make something that appeals to streamers thats just free advertising
Other Party likes are Party Animals, very good but only has 1 type of mode really
Crab Game, a ton of fun but lacking in types of games
And Pummel Party, which I think sucks and has no visual charm or charisma, but people crave games like this
Also, kinda Fall Guys but that doesnt have the same structure of the others
>>
>>489069739
An RPG is still pretty difficult for a beginner. Try to make Pong first using C++ and Raylib. If that's too hard, try tic-tac-toe in the console, then using graphics.

After Pong you can make the next game on the list, until you feel confident.

how the fuck has it been 20+ years and I can't just easily look at all the models and textures for games like OoT or RE4?
there's just The Models Resource and The Textures Resource, but both are pretty sparse

You say it can be changed from the editor like it's something special. Everything can be changed from the editor. Why not make it load everything from external json instead if you wanted easy extensibility?
Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you meant.

the best marketing strategy is the one that allows you to get as many positive reviews as possible within the first 24 hours of release
so far the best strategies i've seen have been
>build up fanbase on social media by releasing multiple games and developing a community who will leave positive reviews purely from good will
>have an influencer/streamer play it and hope the views translate to sales and reviews
>spend a few months building up a Discord server and beg the users to review the game
once the Steam algorithm picks up and promotes your game, you'll be alright, it seems
you can also just dump the game on Steam and hope for the best but normally it takes months if not years for the game to build up momentum

>>489066034
life is really hell for codelets, isn't it? for me coding is by far the easiest part of gamedev. what's the hardest part? getting likes on twitter. if your game can't consistently get at least followerCount*0.3 likes then it's DOA.

The actual answer to this question is make the character a pretty boy like inosuke or legolas. Now that I have your attention and have given you a little advice, someone please tell me how to make it so in godot colliders snap you to the face of a tile upon collision so tunneling doesnt occur. this is the LAST thing I need to do

ever heard of this thing called "releasing a demo"?
>>
>>489071690
it's not colorful enough, sorry bub.
>>
God there's so much work left to do.
>>
>>489071870
Could be viable. Do you have examples of games successful because of demos?
>>
>>489071690
eewww nice unity store test level
>>
>>489071957
Dungeon Siege
Age of Mythology
Medieval: Total War
Diggles
>>
>>489071957
It's hard to quantify how much it's successful "because of the demo" as opposed to just because the game is good, but Balatro had some 3 demo sessions in a year (i.e.1 month when it made the demo available and then took it off) and also submitted the demo to Steam Next Fest.
>>
>>489071957
Serious Sam TFE
>>
>>489071870
This is actually harmful for most games, which is why bigger studios skip demos in almost all cases. No game is as good as its marketing material portrays it to be, that's the entire point of marketing. If you let them sample the game, they'll let down in almost all cases. If that letdown is small enough, they'll buy the game, but in most cases they'll just wait for a sale.

Gamedev lifehack (marketing edition)
Make a reddit account and post a short video where something fucking stupid happens in your game. (Example for a racing game, you drive full speed in the wrong direction and crash head on into another car)
Give no infos and title it like you're a literal subhuman. (one of them)
If nobody reacts, your game will flop. If it has success, let the real subhumans find your game or post with your second account after a little while.
>"Found it. {Link to your game}
Damn hard to find, I knew I saw it somewhere"
Don't bother talking to those disgusting freaks at all.
Don't bother posting it on gamedev places. Treat enemy gamedevs as leeches unless you can leech off of them.
>>
>>489072172

>>
>>489072563
It's really not all that difficult. All you need is the vision and the skills to bring it to reality.
>>
>marketing

this is just the art of jewish trickery. you don't need this if your game is actually good. couple screenshots and some honest gameplay footage and people can easily tell your game has potential and worthy of a playthrough.

better face reality than expect to become a millionaire and face 5 sales because you never showed it to anyone.
It's up to you to decide whether you believe that person or he's trolling.
Overwhelmingly good games get more positive attention than negative(barring underspace which went somewhat without you's in the last year before EA somehow?)
perhaps the more they post the less you's they get, landsword barely posts so he gets showered every time.
>>
speedrunning 10 reviews is the most important thing for a game to even have an opportunity to be successful
if you don't hit 10 reviews within a reasonable time frame, your game drowns in obscurity and is never seen again
whatever strategy you use, be sure to hit 10 reviews as fast as possible
understand that reviews from gifted copies to do not count
>>
>>489074274
Imagine not knowing 10 people willing to buy your game. You do have supportive friends and family, right /agdg/?
>>
>>489074389
if this unironically applies to you then your best bet is to spend a few months making friends on discord servers who will be willing to leave positive reviews for you
it can literally make or break your game
if you refuse to do any marketing at all for your game, at least try this out if you care about sales at all
friendmaxxing... the final devpill...
>>
>>489073668
The thing is I have no art skill, no programming skill, no music skill, my only ability is that I have exceptional taste, so I can work at all of those things like making a marble statue from a mountain until they're up to my standards, it'll just take me probably a couple years to get to the point I know I can be. I'm obviously gonna have a few people playtest it but I doubt what they tell me will influence my direction/opinion at all.

>>
>>489074827
it's about getting picked up by the algorithm
>>

>>
>>489075026
Save up some autusm bux and use that money to take an art course for beginners. You'll meet new people who are creative. The bar isn't high because everybody is a beginner. You'll bond with the people over the process. And you might even learn something you didn't already know.
>>
is it true it takes 10 reviews to even get your game noticed by the algorithm?

https://howtomarketagame.com/2022/01/25/why-your-first-10-reviews-are-the-most-important/

10 reviews won't blow up your game (lots of games stuck at 10-50 reviews) but it's and indicator to Steam that it's not shovelware.

The lynchpin of the American financial system is printing dollars by making its vassal states buy its debt. After multiple near-miss catastrophes involving its yield curve control scheme, Japan had to raise its interest rates, so that holding US treasuries for yield is now significantly less attractive. All parasites that hold USD assets and JPY liabilities to get free money indirectly subsidized by the BoJ through said YCC are now incentivized, and in many cases forced, to sell dollars and buy yen to make ends meet.
