I hate ranni. I understand why wasn't the final boss. If they kept everything the same and just swapped radahn out for godwyn then that means, with the two general interpretations of "radahn was in on it" or "radahn was brainwashed" ranni would've saved the lands between from getting mibdraped by miquella and put a halt to his plans, or she could've in a fucked up way, temporarily saved godwyn from getting mindraped by miquella. Even if that's not why she did it, that would he the two results and it would take away a lot of the evil of the main bad thing ranni did, killing godwyn. It would've retroactively justified his death and even if she did it for selfish reasons, made her a hero and made the rannisimps who are already an annoying pest, even more vocal about how great and wonderful she is. But I still think it should've been malenia, we had stuff in the game for it already, in the base game cut quest they could've been a duo boss kinda like what we have already now. The things are already there for it. They should've just done it. With how gowry and even miquella talks about her and us not getting "god slain" upon beating her its clear she's still fucking alive so why not have the two siblings properly reunited? Why? We know miquella wanted to cure the rot affliction from her, we could've gotten a miquella that if not cured her rot, allowed her more control over it without it eating away at her or others unwittingly. We could've had, instead of the unwilling goddess of rot, malenia, lord of rot alongside her brother miquella god of compassion. Hell we could've even got something for malenia, with miquella at her side, being more compassionate to the kindred, finally accepting them even if she's killed by us shortly after. Or they could've kept the cut base game quest of us being miquella's consortOr they could've kept the cut dlc ending where we side with miquella and radahn and are wed to malenia. Anything would've been better than what we got.

Also, the game does a pretty shit job of teaching most people about all their mobility options, but that's normal. Most of Dark Souls 1 difficulty came from how convoluted some of the systems seemed at first glance due to shit explanations. I know you're supposed to figure it out on your own, but path of least resistance. Also path of least resistance is that it's easier to just roll everything. Having two different types of dodges forces the player to get used to two different timings. It requires that the player quickly read that an attack is jumpable and then execute the jump. Meanwhile, a dodge will work for any attack, whether jumpable or not. ER is a pretty difficult game, at least until you stumble into an optimal build (or use the mimic). Bosses give very little room for error. This combined with years of left over Souls knowledge means that most players are encouraged towards less fun and less risky playstyles.

All of it wears on you really hard after the first playthrough or two. After that it's just a chore because you have to go wandering around doing all sorts of copypasted bosses just to get a high enough level to do well on the lategame boss rush. I like some of the new additions to combat like guard counters. Jumping, however, is a mixed bag. Most of the jumpable attacks do not appear jumpable, like Godrick's flame spray. The flame effect goes above your head, you'd never expect to be able to jump that. The new style of boss design has so many problems. I loathe the lategame bosses now. It takes several sessions for me to stand doing them. They're hyper aggressive, which would make sense if you're supposed to be hyper aggressive back, but they have many moves which put them out of harms way when you try to punish (maliketh's leaps and malenia's dodging slice, for example) or sometimes punish you for trying to punish. That sometimes is key. The bosses feel less predictable. They'll extend their combos depending on circumstances, sometimes by what appears to be random chance, to punish you for trying to punish. It's annoying, even when you realize some of them are positioning base. Enemies have too much health and do too much damage towards the later half of the game. The draconic tree sentinel outside Maliketh's room is a great example of that. Does insane damage and has high health so you have to spend 10 minutes poking him down, then having to reset if you make a bad mistake. Tedious.That's all I can think of off the top of my head. I no longer trust Fromsoft's design. I'll take a long time before I try their next game to see how people like it.

I despise the tedious trial-and-error combat format where you get thrown up against a being with several times more hp and damage than you and you just have to scramble to survive until you learn their moveset and then never get hit again. It's like learning dance choreography, or how to beat an MMO raid boss.What I LOVE is getting to each new area and scouting it out and thoughtfully adjusting my equipment and skills, trying new tactics to clear each area, beating every enemy, finding every hidden treasure, uncovering every bit of lore, etc.I view each area as a puzzle to solve in which you have until you're out of health to 100% the area. You have a hard limit in that if you die you restart, and a soft limit in that you only have so many health flasks to keep you going. You can mitigate that with healing and fp talismans and skills, though. My current best clear is I 100%'d all of Shadow Keep other than Messmer himself the first time I went, including the two Ulcerated Tree Spirits, without resting at a site of grace. I ended up relying on Blasphemous Blade + Taker's Cameo for hp regen after running out of health flasks, and Sacrificial Axe off-hand + Ancestral Spirit's Horn for fp regen so I could periodically cast Erdtree's Blessing on myself to top my hp off again because Blasphemous Blade + Taker's Cameo couldn't keep up with the damage.What I want from the boss fights are more hard-counters that you can figure out while clearing up to the boss, and less spam from bosses to allow for more intelligent gameplay. Less emphasis on reaction time and more on outsmarting the boss.

I just fought a DLC boss that isn't hard on melee, but input reading forced me to play in melee range, and fun spells take longer to cast than melee light attacks, also deal barely any posture damage. So casting is actually fun and interesting
