First successful animation conversion and viewing for the new GraphicsSystem that uses Ogre 1.x

Currently the converter segfaults on shutdown. It happens after conversion, so it works but I need to investigate and correct it.
I also forgot again about the normal directions, so placeholder chan is half bald.
I need to both correct the normal directions on the model as well as look into how I will be exporting double-sided materials.
Other than that, all movement and facial expressions seem to have worked nicely.
>>
Going to start learning about 3d modeling and rigging characters.
What do I have to do to make sure my animations are reusable? Can you guys link me some relevant and up to date beginner tutorial?

why is it that every single new game has to figure out basic building blocks like movement, character/enemies, items, leveling, hp bars, etc?
why isn't there like preset stuff for that in every engine available? it's not like these are high level concepts, like EVERY fucking game uses them

Nuances in those systems/mechanics give each game their uniqueness. Also there are way more essential things engines don't have as a preset before coming to those features. Engines are made to deal with more technical aspect of things. Like rendering, loading assets, culling etc. Things like movement is more up to you.
>it's not like these are high level concepts
They are technically high level, meaning they are way on the back of the list of things to implement.
By the way, Unity, Unreal do have character controllers. Unreal has so many things premade in it anyways.

There are?
Unity has components for all of that stuff.
UE has presets for all of that stuff in the example projects.
Godot has some example projects too.
Every graphics API can draw images and primitives in a single function call.
People aren't reinventing the wheel just because they actually have to tell the framework they need it.

I've been trying to think of how feasible it is to use 3d low poly models as characters in a VN like game. Not anything huge in scope but a story that lasts 2-3 hours. The thing im thinking about is like this:
in 2d VNs, sprites of characters will just snap from pose to pose, and that's generally accepted as a norm. There's usually no idle animations outside of a few blinks/mouth changes.
But what about 3d? Would 3d models snapping from pose to pose work or be too uncanny? Theoretically it could maybe use blend animations where it will auto interpolate between old and new pose, but I feel like the movement of that might look even more awkward if you don't have dedicated in-between pose animations.

lmao, I got extensions so I don't miss a single (you).

'Atomic turns with respect to players' may not be the best term, but I struggle finding a better analog. In a table top game, you might have units move, shoot, take actions, etc. but your opponent is usually not make any decisions or actions aside from rolling their own dice, which is easily done by a computer in online games. This is as opposed to a card game like Magic: The gathering where the opponent can cast 'instant' spells or activate abilities in response to things you do on your turn.

Anyway, I'm interested to see where you go with this, since I think 'sub-games' feel like unexplored space in multiplayer games.

Literally just design attractive female characters in moderately revealing sexy outfits. That's literally all you need to do. Games like Stardew attract weirdos because the characters are just regular people wearing regular clothes. It's easy for ugly people to feel "at home" in those costumes, if you can even call them costumes.
Fat women, ugly women, and non-women are all typically too insecure about their bodies to dress up as a character that's seen as a sex symbol. I'm a loser who goes to cons fairly regularly and I can count on one hand how many fat 2B cosplayers I've seen, including the peak Nier years when every con was flooded with 2B. You probably don't need to lean as far into coomerbait design territory as 2B, just have your women showing midriff or wearing tight pants or whatever. Stuff that filters fatties by design.
You know who does gravitate towards cosplaying sexy characters? Attractive women, because they feed off of attention like vampires and want to use their bodies to gain even more attention. If you were to make a graph plotting the attractiveness of a character compared to how many women cosplay that character, the number of cosplayers would diminish as the character's sexiness increases. However, the attractiveness of those remaining cosplayers would also increase comparatively. The funny thing is with men it's basically the inverse, pic related.
I'm just trying to give you some useful information. Again, as someone who goes to a lot of cons I would like to see more attractive female character designs.

I'm browsing a third party asset and am considering an older compatible version rather than the newest and final guaranteed compatible version. The latter puts me in a bad position should an inexplicable bug appear. Downgrading doesn't sound feasible without breaking something, but I can really upgrade further without potential issues in compatibility. Sort of like the problem you have.

Yeah iktf. Each time I had a job Id get a short burst of motivation to work on my game until it eventually fizzled out and id be looking for a new job because "surely not all workplaces nearby are like this, rrright?" and just gaming. The amount of stress Id get put under in these office environments made it hard to focus on gamedev when I ended up getting left jaded from the amount of people whose sole goal in life is to push others down for their amusememt and any attempt of fighting back results in you getting talked to by management or fired because they are management

It literally is. Your job is designed to drain your every ounce of your energy and you have to spend your free time recuperating. Most people will fall into this trap and be stuck there forever.

My advice: live as frugally as you possibly can. Renting your own apartment is a complete scam. Go on craigslist and you can find a roomshare for less than half your current rent. Save as much money as possible and eventually use that money to quit your job. Make sure you have several (5+ years) of runway when you do.

I'm a certified Unreal Engine 4 dev formally trained by Ben Tristem and his two friends. I also know php. Once I get some notes down about the premise of my game then I'll prototype the battle system in php then I'll take the UE5 course then I'll really start putting things together in UE5. I've also done modelling before in blender it's easy you just draw something from the side and front and drag and drop the dots.

>why would you trade an easy life for work? lol
I'd spent over a year since graduating university trying to find a job with no luck. My parents eventually gave me an ultimatum that if I didn't find a real job soon I'd have to get a wagey food service position. If I did neither they were going to kick me out and I'd only have the couple thousand bucks in my savings account to support myself with.

Hey everyone,

After dedicating 10 years of my life to Stardew Valley (and counting), the time has finally come to announce my next game.

It’s called “ConcernedApe’s Haunted Chocolatier”.

Why chocolate? I’m not sure. It just kind of came to me. I think sometimes the best ideas just appear in a flash, instead of being cleverly thought out. That’s how I like to work, anyway. What’s important is the execution. And after 10 years of practice, I feel more confident than ever in being able to bring an idea to life.

Regardless, I think a lot of people like chocolate.

Chocolate represents that which is delightful. The haunted castle represents the allure of the unknown. The ghosts represent the imprint of the past. All of these things are important. However, don’t think for a moment that, because this game features ghosts in a haunted castle, it is an evil or negative game. On the contrary, I intend for this game to be positive, uplifting and life-affirming. However, if Stardew Valley mostly channeled the energy of the sun, Haunted Chocolatier channels the energy of the moon. Both are vital.

Alright I'm done devving for the day, time for a walk. So today I got there's an evil wizard in a crystal tower on a floating island casting a bad spell in the grasslands but everyone is too distracted by bloody pointless war to notice. The frozen god thing. In the underground a war between Gods threatens to bring the roof down and wars in the sky lands threatens to make the God there stop caring and let the sky islands drop into the ground. Just eight more calamities to think of for my final fantasy game except you lose (unless you do obnoxious randomized personalized arg shit and know everything about the game).

Trying to use some shaders in Godot but having some complications.
I'm using a bitmap as a mask to highlight certain provinces of a map, but as I move and pan the camera around the shader is also moved around the sprite2D.
Anyone had a similar issue?
Here's the code:

shader_type canvas_item;

uniform sampler2D bitmap_texture; // The color-coded bitmap
uniform vec4 target_color:source_color;
//uniform vec4 target_color = vec4(0.06,0.36,0.60,1) ; // The color of the province to highlight
uniform vec4 highlight_color = vec4(1,1,1,1); // The color to apply as highlight
uniform float tolerance = 0.01; // Tolerance for color matching

void fragment() {
// Get the UV coordinates of the current fragment (pixel) in the bitmap texture
vec2 uv = FRAGCOORD.xy / vec2(textureSize(bitmap_texture, 0));
// Sample the bitmap at the current UV coordinates
vec4 bitmap_color = texture(bitmap_texture, uv);
// Calculate the distance between the bitmap color and the target color
float distance = distance(bitmap_color.rgb, target_color.rgb);
if (distance < tolerance) {
COLOR = highlight_color;
} else {
COLOR = texture(TEXTURE, UV); // Otherwise, show the original texture
}
}

Progress is good. As long as I maintain a pace with it, it will be good.

I've had many ideas and learned a lot but I haven't actually been able to finish a project yet. I learned the absolute basics of greyboxing in unreal 5, I've learned how to create assets in blender and how to do UVunwrapping and basic texturing and shit, I have learned a bit of music making basics and made some simple tunes, learned the basics of ambient sounds, I got one of the basic player controllers in unreal able to jump around my scene and I made interactable doors I can open and close and all of this is via blueprints because retarded codelet. Will the point where I feel like I'm ready to start a real project ever come or will it always feel like I'm a dollar short? Do I just make a "Hello World" for each new thing I learn or is there a point where you actually feel competent?

Yes, most vector graphics due to their sharp edges. I am going with a flash game style of "art" for this game. I am not an career artist, that shit is obvious.
>ugly colours
eww someone from europe
This is a solid criticism. Thankfully all of the software I use that generates the titlesets for the game makes this very easy to change. I'll make the game first, then worry about its appearance. How do you think I should change the colors to make them less ugly?

i realized what's making a game great for me is how many systems there are revolving around npcs. be it needs, character, age, gender, mental state, family structure etc.
i noticed how much i hate "dead games", which are games without npcs or with "static" npcs that do nothing but replaying some pre-defined voice lines.
that's probably why rimworld and sims 3 are my most played games.

>i do the tutorial and build the ship. i have to wait 3 months for the ship to build - it should be faster since it's a tutorial, just have it done after 5 seconds.
>the ship is built, but nothing happens. unsure if the tutorial ends or if something is supposed to happen

everything else works. i don't like the eyes of the general/commander character who is untying his belt. he looks like he has a lazy eye.

idk you tell me, i'm over 4 years in and only realized a year ago just how overscoped it is to make it as fun as possible for it to actually stand a chance at selling well. i don't want to end up like the anons who are at ~10 years on a single game!

i want to stop and work on something new but that's basically admitting i'm not going to make it off it and that i wasted way too much time on it for a flop. like throwing all those years of effort in the trash rather than going further so it doesn't end up in the trash....possibly. if it still ends up a flop after all that, then it's going to feel a lot worse.

If you told us upfront that this is a practice game jam project or something, I don't think anyone would criticize the quality of work too harshly, but AFAIK, you want this project to be a commercial game, and if that's the case, then we're just trying to break the bad news to you early.

oh yeah there's no like instant responses like mtg. although i kinda like it, i think that aspect slows that game down to a crawl in an online format and forces you to watch over your opponent play even when they're not doing anything interesting most of the time

that said mtg is a huge inspiration to this game. it's not quite a card game but there is a very similar rules system that utilizes a "stack" for events, and rules text is always extremely explicit and tells you exactly how everything resolves. plus one of the major gameplay aspects is finding ways to do creative synergy plays by combining those items and abilities in funky ways. you mainly draft them by combining your faction-specific stuff with stuff you buy from the marketplace for now

It did not create 1 day to create. I would be finalizing a bunch of work today. Cashing in so to speak. I've been crabbing on it because I haven't had the motivation to actually work on it.
Also it wouldn't be 2 hr of content, it would be an additional hour of content. Tops. Depending on how good the player is at the game. You could speedrun it in 5-15 minutes probably depending on RNG, armor loadout, and movement speed affixes. Because armor type effects movement speed.

you can't fix an empty game like this without rebuilding it from the ground up. "shooty shooty boom boom" isn't exactly the pinnacle of riveting action. the game has to have a point. it's can't just be all juice and no anything at all that matters. why am I playing this? what considerations do i need to make to get better at this game? what strategy can i use? how is my brain involved in playing this dopamine toddler distraction toy? why should i play this when i can just boot up morrowind or warcraft 3 and play that?

Hey, thanks for the feedback. I'm going to eventually implement a sort of tutorial/training area where I can explain some of the mechanics of the enemy behavior and how the player can do combat in more strategic ways. The AI in its current state does have a cone of vision and reacts to things like buildings collapsing, so there are ways you can play tactically by baiting them and ambushing, but I know the options right now are limited. Part of the reason I'm also working on grenades now is to open up some other ways that the combat can be varied.

The second mission which you played is a bit "dumber" in the sense that it's more of just a big horde enemy spam where you have to be careful and dodge the incoming waves, but I hope that I can get that to be more dynamic once I introduce better code for buildings and you have similar combat opportunities like in the first mission.

I think the biggest problem for your game is that you hit some kind of sweet spot and now you're getting tons of unearned positive feedback which is deluding you into thinking that the game has something going for it. I really think that the game has a chance at becoming good but you're already in a zone of your life where you're getting too much onesided feedback and that's going to convince you of things that aren't true and rob you of any genuine feedback that people could have left. Sorry for your game. It's already over.

You just reminded me on why I stepped back on the idea of making armor actually appear on the character sprites. The amount of sprite sheets I'd have to make just to fit all the design possibilities is enormous! More than 400 sprites on 1 single character just to have all possible armor designs equipped, not to mention the code needed to handle this which is a lot easier than drawing all that. Now add in the fact my characters are not all the same shape and size so it won't always be a simple copy and paste task, plus the females have more frames. This comes out to more than 2500 sprites that need to be finely adjusted, placed, and/or designed.

>>491663513
Even if I did I'm just one guy. It's been scientifically proven that showering someone with validation makes him lazier and less determined to aspire to bigger things. I can't stop that from happening

the illusion of choice keeps the player engaged no matter the outcome.
>>
>>491663794
it's better you make a point of him by throwing a wall of criticism his way in this public space otherwise other devs will get too uppity
>>
>>491663839
And this is why Nintendo makes games that only appeal to low IQ consumers. It doesn't keep me engaged after the tenth choice that does nothing. All it does is makes me more aware of how shallow the world is because it doesn't change to anything I do and does whatever it feels like doing like I have no free will.
>>
>>491663709
I've been observing the way that games are treated in dev circles and it's never the same as the way people treat real games. It's always some variation of extreme deviation of bias which gives the dev enough concentrated psychological bias to muddy his perception of the game and the clarity of what he needs to focus on. All indev games are either ignored completely, notpicked to death, or praised as the second coming of jesus, and each of these extremes is psychologically harmful to the person that needs to see the project from the start to the end.
>>
>>491664207
idk if you meant it by this deranged ranting but i have noticed that game devs tend to evaluate games with the "craft" in mind, which makes them obsess over random shit like UI elements, pixel perfection, design elegance or just the opposite (lolsorandum shit)

meanwhile actual players are like "this game look fun i play it now" and don't give a fuck about most of those things

TES numbers are designed like that for retards in mind, but they also used to have lots more stats to level.

D&D is supposed to be social, and revolve around the dice roll, numbers can't be large, it has to be inclusive and involve as little maths as possible.

never played wurm.

Paper mario, game for babies, baby tier numbers,

Tabletop rpg, again dice rolls, chance percentages, making sure maths is easy to work out for the less abled.

jprgs are power fantasies, big numbers feel good, especially if you were hitting double digits early game.

Latter is best, tickles the monkey brain.

The story after its release is pretty funny. Some how the developers were outsmarted by capitalists, fired, and possibly lost the rights to the game.
>>
>>491664746
Bigger numbers are easier to fuck around with and obfuscate. The true path is just making some arbitrary crackpot calculations using esoteric mathematical processes and using them even if the result is shitty.

>>491664746
I prefer low numbers. I think 3-4 figure values should be rare, but not unseen.
If numbers are too big then they stop making sense. Look at Diablo 3 or Borderlands 2, at some point you start processing things as percentages rather than numbers.
The upside of larger numbers is that you don't have to fuck around with decimals and, believe me, you don't want to fuck around with floats.

>>491664820
It has huge implications on mechanical depth.
For example, keeping math small and simple like PM keeps interactions important and small effects like an extra attack become very meaningful
With fractional numbers and attack speeds and shit, you can just smooth out the damage curve and upgrades feel less impressive (eg wow 2% more fire damage)

>>491665018
Going from 1000 to 2000 damage on an attack doesn't feel as good as going from 1 to 2
>>
>>491665819
the only bit that looked good was the bit designed to tickle your monkey brain.

>>
>>491665885
You wouldn't get it if you haven't played POE. The only thing that matters is how fast you see the enemy's health bar drop if you can see it. The actual number is meaningless and makes you realize damage numbers are bad design. You can actually feel your damage output instead of thinking big number good.
>>

thats games in the arcades were hard.
Mortal kombat for example was programmed to read your inputs, some fights literally impossible because the AI was programmed to use an attack with less frames and/or they could instigate throws that ignored your collision/attack altogether.

Very minor dev question. My character's idle, walk, run etc. sprites are 32x32 but their punch sprites are slightly bigger than that. Should I resize all the sprites to match the punch dimensions or just offset the punch sprite when displaying it. Which would you personally do?

Nobody tell this retard that most oldfags either trooned out and became the troons they complain about, end deep into the other end or became normal enough to piss off both sides.
Your precious idea of what an oldfag is doesn't exist and that's why "oldfags" are always mentioned in third person.

I'm a terrible programmer so take my advice with a grain of salt.
It depends on how often the punch animation comes up because if it's very often then I would rather resize the sprite to avoid having to offset it constantly.

people lived like this without the internet(free knowledge) and tech... if i had to guess it would be that one would need a lot less effort in modern times. i've been looking into permaculture channels and it seems pretty cool. sure, it's under rose tinted glasses for youtube, but still... poor people are obese. there is a brazilian guy that gives public speeches in universities and other places and he found happiness as a hobo. maybe life doesn't have to be the way it is right now, maybe living more frugally away from the city could be an option. at least I hope so

I think you can try a little bit of that life without fully committing by planting a garden or keeping a small group of chickens.
The latter is harder in the city because cats can sneak into your backyard and murder your chickens.

Coop game, which is better
>choice 1: a single prefab has both the player character and menu ui canvases as it's children game objects
>choice 2: two prefabs, one prefab has the player character and the other prefab has the menu ui canvases

I'm looking around online as I haven't really dealt with multiplayer and I seem to see both options done. What's the difference? Doesn't choice 1 make it easier? Or is there something wrong with that choice? I saw tutorial that I quickly skimmed and watched and both options were done with the first one being preferred

All my sprite sheets are separate so something like that isn't a problem. Simply set the pivot point (what it's called in Unity, idk in other engines) to a position where it ended up placed in the exact same spot as other sprites when it becomes visible eg the feet are standing on the same spot.

Well it’s a third person shooter with a lot of components from other games I enjoyed playing in the past. I put a strong focus on the music (3 and a half hour soundtrack took 7 years to finish, mostly original stuff but admittedly I added out some songs here and there with some remixed royalty free stuff). It’s a sort of interconnected semi open world kind of like dark souls, maybe a bit more linear in nature, features boss fights, lots of story elements that go pretty deep (spent 7 years working through the lore as well and that’s still a big WIP in many areas, along with the writing). I guess to sum it up more shortly I’m trying to make my dream game which is a more visually detailed version of a AAA title that would have come out in the mid 2000s or so.
>>491676879
>asset packs
I mean the whole game is a mix of original assets and re-purposed assets from various sources sure (it would take me literal decades to make everything from scratch). Still took me an entire year to get just to this point though so very far from being an asset flip if that’s what you’re implying. The level design portions alone will probably take me another 2-3 years and involve several million objects across a several mile wide map.
>>
>>491677804
I don't mind that you're using asset packs, but screenshots of lazily placed assets in an empty world with zero gameplay footage inspires negative confidence in your project. I would be more impressed with gameplay-relevant greyboxes.

>I would be more impressed with gameplay-relevant greyboxes.
Well that is a legitimate method of crafting gameplay in the early stages for sure but that’s not how I was taught in school to make levels. I experiment a lot, probably ends up taking longer but I prefer working with finished or near finished assets visually speaking. Everyone has their own creative process I guess.

learning Reaper and Bespoke Synth
getting cool shit to happen between my drumbrute impact and bespoke synth + effects + LFOs galore controlling variational stuff + multitrack recording in bespoke. DB Impact a bit shit as a drum machine/groovebox but has some nice features and it's very "performative", so it's actually fun to program and fuck around with when recording as a midi device, especially with all Bespoke Synth offers.
Getting multitrack recording from bespoke synth working was awesome as I can just bulk drag the instrument tracks into Reaper for further refinement.

Really pumped to either sell some off some old gear (korg minilogue, yamaha dx27 in particular) or get them involved in a whole setup.
Model: Cycles on the way, slightly-less-than-shitty bookshelf speakers arrived and work

I'm thinking about how to work with title music, like one 4 bar measure that everyone will hear when it starts up, then triggering one of two variations or something like that, idk.
Thinking of a thing like Theme -> {A,B} -> {C, D} -> {E, F}
And weighting so there's kind of a "canonical" song, let's say: Theme -> A -> C -> E. But there's a chance every time to get some variation.

Where the synthnerd musicdevs at, tell me your pitfalls, teach me your wisdom

what do I need to do to use a vec4 in a storage buffer?

example C struct:

struct SomeData {
vec4 color;
};

doesn't work, it crashes

this works:

struct SomeData {
vec2 a;
vec2 b;
};

I'm losing my mind trying to troubleshoot. does it need some type of padding?

everything is initialized, and size is calculated via n * sizeof(SomeStruct)

Devs usually use the 2d portraits so they don't need to show close ups of the 3d models. I think it would be better if you set the camera to show both talking (maybe changing the angle once in a while).
>>
>>491685348
don't care. This is the only way to ensure that the path doesn't exist anywhere in code on the build of the game that I'm sending out for testing. I can't risk even having a leftover of that path anywhere in the script

I was using a specific type, but now I'm trying with a float color[4], which crashes when I try to access it in the shader, for example:

buffer[0].color // <-- crashes as a vec4

now, if we change the data in the struct to be

struct SomeStruct {
vec2 a;
vec2 b;
};

and then, access it in the shader:

buffer[0].a and buffer[0].b

it works, without crashing

You do need to follow certain conventions with padding yes.
Show your old pal Frosch the GLSL. Vulkan or Opengl? If you are following std430 convention vec2 shouldn't cause you problems.

how when it doesn't exist inside the build of the game? The path to the file that contains my computer's file path is just the generic save folder file path

Unrelated (I'm guessing) assertion is failing. It's BGFX shaderc code. The assertion is triggered only when accessing buffer[0]'s (or buffer[i])'s vec4 struct field. The compiled shader (in my case, Metal) looks OK.

The vertex layout matches the C struct, and the struct in the shader matches the vertex layout and C struct.

I might just add a Metal backend to my renderer, it won't be too difficult. I'm temporarily using a Mac, and BGFX is a really simple API to start prototyping with.

the character doesn't look like a humanoid mascot from the 90s, like Starfox or similar, but rather like one of those perverts in furry suits. and this is a problem because 1) nobody likes those perverts and 2) your in-universe explanation for how your character can jump a whole floor and cling to perfectly flat surfaces falls apart if he's actually a man in a suit.

this reminds me of a very barebones demoday entry where there were a bunch of crabs / other seacreatures and the entire demo was just grouping creatures together
