Literally states they'd get a flat fee back then when you are an indie, meaning you got paid $5k prematurely for it. Whether its a game made in 6 months with 1 hour of gameplay or a game made in 4 years with 5 hours of gameplay makes no difference. You taking longer than expected didn't mean the publisher was going to pay you more.

Goes on to say they had a deal with the websites hosting their games with performance based metrics. Combine that with the competition mostly churning out small quick games and yes there isn't much reason to go make a long game, it ends up boring and you might just make less than the rest making small games in a month.

Terrible article. He seems to fail to see that the bar has risen. You can't just make a game in under a month and have people accept programmer art or even 2015's typical indie graphics quality level, 45 minutes of gameplay, and 0 replayability when they could just go download Fortnite for free. Unironically the reason you can't get away with churning out games like that is because you'd probably make less money than what those people in the past pulled off. Maybe if your game just happens to go FOTM or you already had a fanbase/stolen fanbase prior to its creation. I wish I could get away with that but look at one group doing it, Sokpop Collective. Ridiculously high amount of games churned out and it seems most of their money comes from patreon bux, not the actual games sales. $6k, 4 man team last I remember. The amount of effort required is more than the coomdevs here have to put in on a single game. Or how about that guy making at least 6 figures every single month a weg that of I heard right hasn't had an update for months?

Missing middle, yeah no. This is the normal form of gamedev in the 2020s.

I feel like the full potential for Dark And Darker has not been achieved. It seems like the game is dead, or at least pseudo dead. People arent really playing it, and back when streamers where, the thing went through all that controversy. Really nipped it in the bud.

I think the guy makes up a lot of reasons for observations that are commonly wrong but there are still opportunities. Suika shapes was originally only a couple months and returned a few thousand in the first few months alone, but admittedly I was late to jump on the suika trend and the game wasn't as polished as I could make it now. It could have done a good amount better if I was more skilled. I am better equipped to recognize opportunities to make a fast follow game of these meme games now though, I think he wrote an article about this strategy before. Also I'm putting together a 1 month fruit mountain / holo mountain clone right now because I haven't shipped in a while. It might not do well but I have another game to release by end of year too (double flop incoming). Getting a couple small games out isn't so bad

Time for walkies. Kind of a slow day today. At least in the last 7 minutes I was able to come up with a quest idea for the comfy village on the outskirts of Santa country. The village needs a source of mana to keep the fires burning since the shipments from the capitol aren't always reliable. Every quest needs at least a branch then another branch on each branch so I'm thinking take it/produce it themselves then for take it route you can force a snow fairy village to provide yearly sacrifices or something. Just need to ideaguy 35 and a half more towns worth of quests, ways for the towns to influence each other depending on their states, think about the dungeons and region quests, then I'll probably have enough of an outline to start thinking about gameplay.

Don't remind me, I might need to redo various environmental pieces and the creatures in my game. After 2 graphics updates to my characters they are now something like 2x the size they used to be. Those tree's that once felt tall now feel small by comparison. That one enemy that felt slightly shorter than the characters now feels way too small. I don't want to redo all that art! Idk how I'm going to handle stuff like tree's. They used to feel big but now they don't and making them any bigger means the tree tops may end up above the top of the screen.

There isn't a problem of that with the sizes here. The characters are simply taller than before as my art skill improved and I got better at fitting details. Everything else just feels smaller as they are the only ones who kept receiving improvements over the years.

the dark (fully opaque) shadows from the smoke look strange and make things hard to "read" imo. is there any way to get semitransparent shadows in Unreal? I would look into that if I were you. it's not so bad on the smoke trails when you drift, although those really shouldn't be gray on sand. but the smoke of explosions is very transparent. if you can't get semitransparent shadows I would actually suggest just deactivating shadows on the explosion smoke. I bet that would look more fitting.

throwing together a 3d suika shapes type game in under a month for sale (steam page soon). Gameplay is mostly together. There's a hololive game like this that's popular right now so I have to go fast, but honestly there isn't a huge market like there was for suika game. I've already done everything in 2d though so this is easy mode.
I want this game to have a cleaner UI compared to suika shapes, and have all players be focused on a single gamemode to start. It'll be very cheap and hopefully I can cross-promote a bit and make a bundle sale.
I also need to take this opportunity to get my boilerplate code a bit more polished (localization, controller support, rebinding) and increase the speed I can get games out (I have a year+ project almost done too though).

I've added a simple karaoke UI which highlights each syllable as the music progresses. All I need to do is to add the timings to the code and it should work nicely.

Be that as it may, that's still far too long for a game like Marmoreal. For comparison, Stardew Valley was made in 4 and a half years, and that's WITH Eric starting over and redoing everything. Marmo has spent 10 years in development only for the result to be a four hour long early access game. There's working at your own pace and then there's just wasting time.

If so, just have an extra (cheap) check whether starting_x <= wall_x <= ending_x (and for the other coordinates) to see if you would go through a wall.
For a triangle you can just do this with the 3d plane it generates.
Works for my homegrown engine.
