Stardew Valley I'm not going to say is easy. There's a lot of work to do. Especially making your own art and music. But it's not complicated. It would probably be fun to program. Very little is interconnected actually. Keeping it bug free and enjoyable to write.

Made a mini version of Dungeon Watchers for newgrounds, in this version you can only play with the witch and the bomber elf. Hopely I can get some feedback and see if the people like the way I'm making the game. I tested the game runs well even on an old pc with no gpu I have, with just small lag spikes when having many enemies at the end of the game.

Congratulations on the release! Truly the gameplay is a blast from the past. I beat it mostly by doing the 3 hit combo, the special moves always got punished for me.

Stardew Valley has very little farming. It's all about users having freedom to create. Find a way to make users have fun being creative and you've got gold. You can't just give a blank canvas, that's overwhelming. Stardew and Minecraft both found ways.

I played it.
My thoughts:
starts out decent. then the variety dried up kinda fast. picking abilities didn't seem to matter.
Sometimes I'd be dropping bombs and then accidentally click an ability when the screen popped up.
The summoner at the end died I think, but I was spamming bombs and then a menu popped up for "return" and "restart" and I hit restart by accident because of the aforementioned bomb./click spam. I recorded my last 3 minutes if you are interested.
the bomb girl is fun, I didn't try the other one. I wish it had more to picking abilities mostly. You should play path of achra for ideas, not a VS but I think it might help you come up with unique abilities and passive effects/combos etc

Overall, not bad, but I don't think it's competitive in the current VS-clone scene.

The lightning strike VFX lingers for too long. Maybe make the particles fade out faster.
Bullets from the eyeballs are not prominent enough. Give enemy projectiles their own unique color not used by any player VFX. Right now, it clashes too much with the lighting VFX, making lightning a terrible pick simply for visual clarity reasons.
Game continues to run after the game over screen, including firing bullets, picking up exp, and the level up screen.
Some particle emitters continue to emit while the level screen is up, leading to a dense build-up.
Towards the end-game, the level-up pop-ups become meaningless and therefore annoying, since I already have all the power that I need. You need limits to the power-ups.
Certain powerups are way too OP, like the +50% exp.
Too few powerup options. Very shallow gameplay.
The BGM loop is too short and gets tedious very quickly.

Also, I don't know why you decided to make it twin-stick controls, but IMO, it detracts from the gameplay. Fireball girl sucks because you have to aim, while Bomber girl is OP because you can just click and hold LMB, but why would you make me hold LMB when there's no meaning to it? I've played RF4, RF1 and FoMT and I find it feels a lot more like Rune Factory than HM. That being said, I'm willing to accept that the coincidences might just be a natural consequence of adding RPG elements to a farming sim.

Harvest Moon was a fantasy setting (see the Goddess, the Witch, Kappa). Rune Factory is much higher fantasy. HM also had simple combat that functioned like Stardew's (see HM:DS). RF is famous for its crafting autism, which Stardew borrowed nothing from.

There's no way somebody who played Rune Factory would come up with combat/crafting this dull. Like I said, the only Stardew mechanic that bares any similarity to Rune Factory's is the quest board. Eric clearly never played it.

I think brush smoothing works well on normal art for me, but it is actually terrible for pixel art. You need precision and every pixel must be in the right place for pixel art to work. There's too few pixels for it to work.

Now what do I use, Krita or Aseprite? I already have both installed, Aseprite through compiling it. I think I'll stick with Aseprite since it was made specifically for pixel art and comes with stuff for animations and (probably) tilesets. I didn't like pixelorama.

It's little things like how McDonalds meat patties are not made-to-order. They're precooked and stay in a warming bin, but you're only supposed to leave it in the warmer for 15 minutes (there's a timer you're supposed to start when you put it in there). There's nothing to stop the employee from completely ignoring that timer if orders are slow and they don't want to have to grill one or two fresh patties for your order. I don't really think that's what's happening, the project is totally within her artistic wheelhouse, and might have started as a prototype in Houdini.

The point of it is that new artist tend to rely too much on color. It’s a huge reason programmer games look like ass.

By checking grayscale, you remove color and so you now have to actually look at the Saturation and Value and how the scene reads.

For example take a game that is infamous for its use of color - Mirror’s Edge.

The specific colors they chose were determined not just based on Hue but on saturation and value.

Notice that the red in grayscale is the darkest object in the scene? Followed by the blue wall running objects. And how the roof tops you can run on stand out from the sides of the buildings because they have a higher value?

They're generally good 3D artists that became very skilled in engine tooling/shader programming, or vice versa. Just look at bloomer shooters, the Gears of War era wasn’t just a lack of color but a complete lack of contrast.

For example, the most prominent part of the enemy is their arm rather than their head. The background of the scene is all very similar greys. The characters are largely just blobs without a defining silhouette.


Programmer art tends to look flat because they don’t use any shading or highlighting, much less with purpose. They rely almost entirely on color to distinguish objects and characters.

Looks like an interesting project that might appeal to a niche audience of history nerds. But an 8 minute long trailer & webpage gushing about your terrain, foliage, and historical accuracy isn't going to win over any sort of general audience. The environment does look nice but the only substantial thing we see is a default Unreal character with default rigging and animations wandering around an environment. If the game is going to be anything more than an interactive history lesson / walking simulator, it's not apparent at all.
Could be a neat project eventually but right now I think it's a couple years of work out from being in a state where it'll actually gain any interest.
