1.Playing unorthodox openings is fun
2.Offer trade of rook for kingside fianchetto bishop. KID players keep taking me up on this and i keep winning. ???

should I learn the catalan? or is it too hard for shitters to play? I don't play d4 though so it'd be an entirely new thing
>>
>>492385035
>should I learn the catalan?
if you want to
>is it too hard for shitters to play?
probably just not a good time investment to learn 6 million catalan lines when you can be learning less nuanced and more diversified opening theorems
>I don't play d4 though so it'd be an entirely new thing
Play d4 a few times and tell me how many times you run into the QGD at whatever elo you're at. Probably fairly rare. So do you want to learn a very theory heavy opening that you're never going to use?
>>
>>492385035
It's fine however you might have more success with versions that don't actually gambit the pawn. For some reason when I tried Catalan everyone wanted to go for a semi slav thing (the closed Catalan) and I didn't find the resulting positions very fun or very good for me in terms of winning percentages.

I think you would have more fun and get more novel positions out of something like the English with early g3. This can transpose back in to the Catalan if you still want to dabble in that, depending on what black does. The move order you will see most often is
1. c4 e5 2. g3 Nf6 3. Bg2
followed by a fairly equal distribution of Bc5 or Nc6 or d5 or c6. Be prepared for this as well:
1. c4 e5 2. g3 d5 3. cxd5 Qxd5 4. Nf3 e4 5. Nc3
it's an online shitter favorite
>>
>>492385035
If you do start playing it, be careful of the lines where you give up the pawn. White must play very actively or the black queenside pawn will say hello. Won a lot of shitter games with that c4-b5-c6 pawn formation against the Catalan.
>>
>>492382302
petrov? not a forced draw. a very dry position if white chooses the most boring continuation though. at time pressure and shittery, you're not drawing.
>>
>>492382302
My experience with the Petrov at casual OTB blitz games against kids at the local club has been this:
Go into drawish endgame
My opponent spent all their practice time on openings and pooozles and has no endgame knowledge
Win what should be an easy draw like half the time
Or
Play nf6
My opponent ignores me and plays Bc4 like a tard
Immediately get a better position
>>
>>492386683
>probably just not a good time investment to learn 6 million catalan lines when you can be learning less nuanced and more diversified opening theorems
Yeah the raw Catalan is a bit too much for online chess. You can learn the variation where you transpose to a QGD from an anti-nimzo(d4 Nf6 c4 e6 Nf3 d5) because the number of lines there is much lower.

How do people get titled at such a shitter level?
>>
>>492418834
Fide lowers the rating requirements for some titles in countries with no / small chess scenes to promote growth. This is intended for third world countries, but for some reason it also applies to Jersey, despite it being part of the UK.

Yeah, the 50% mark is at like 670, which is way too close to the minimum elo of 100. Chess.com desparately wants their ratings to align with FIDE despite having an extremely weak average player so they implemented this meme rating system.

I think that's too overextended. We'd need to find chesscom accounts of fide 1600s.
>>
>>492425386
due to various biases like the dunning kruger effect, most people will tend to attribute this is to something like "everyone is bad, it's crazy how bad everyone is, so even if you're bad compared to me, you're still god compared to everyone else, who are all giga bad". which to be fair has some validity, but at the end of the day, the percentiles mean absolutely nothing when the system is rigged. the middle 90% or so of the bell curve is completely fucked up because the system isn't fair

it's written in the TOS that you can hae multiple accounts as long as you don't overdo it like a cunt

>>492450127

>>
>>492450320
why would you even want to spam accounts anyway? 0 sensible reasons to do this. just play on your main account when you're feeling it and play on your alt if you wanna fuck around. simple as.
>>
>>492450891
i don't have great reasons for it but again i think that's moving the goalposts of this. you're right people shouldn't really be making smurfs at all. but the question is why are they so strict and automatic with smurf+main bans while seemingly not giving a shit about enforcing ANYTHING else? if they were actively banning people and doing this that'd be one thing
>>
>>492451223
my only point is their multi account policy is completely reasonable
>>
>>492437095
2024 1600 fide equals ~1350 fide in 2023 because the bastards raised the rating floor again and squished all ratings under 2000.
I'm 1850 chess.com rapid and 1600 nufide.
>>
>>492451516
It's not though there's no reason to care about multiple accounts. Meanwhile if someone cheats they want you to write an essay about it
>>
>>492451516
why?
it's "reasonable" in certain drawn-up scenarios, but on whole, especially in the context of them being mentally afk wrt catching cheaters, it doesn't strike me as reasonable at all. it just seems like they're randomly deciding to enforce one specific rule
>>
>>492452993
for cheating, a human needs to go over the game and make a judgement call. for multiple accounts, i assume it's much easier to detect automatically and enforce. they're not choosing to focus on that, it just happens to be an easy problem to solve.

Yeah since most self respecting GMs don't participate in norm tournaments, their ratings are usually not GM level, and the other norm seekers also don't have a GM level rating, so to get the rating perf required you need to have a very high score.
The best way to probably get a GM norm is to go to those strong mid level tournaments with a few 2600 GMs, and have a good tournament and get quick draws vs them in the end.

One of the most tilting things in chess is losing to an utter simpleton who clearly doesn't know what he's doing and would lose 9 times out of 10 minimum but gets you that one game and gets to tell himself he killed it. When you can see the whole time "oh good this guy has no idea" and then blunder by your own retardation for no reason and he thinks he owns
>>
>>492484467
I know that feel lmao. You know you should crush the guy and you would crush him if you didn't lose focus. Losing to someone like that feels humiliating. But motivating as well.

Being on the other side of this, it doesn't feel like a legitimate win. Guy outplays me all over the board, my position is trash and I can't move. Then he tries to rush the attack, botches it, my position unravels and i win. I know i would lose to that guy 9 times out of 10. I feel like garbage after these wins.

I saw MANY chess streamers during my life. When I was starting playing chess, botez sisters were at the top, and I'm at the same level as Alexandra Botez, and I would destroy Andrea Botez.

lichess is literally unusable. Guy blunders his queen, asks for takeback. I say no, because it wasn't a mouseslip or anything, he literally just left it hanging. 30 second pause, suddenly I am playing stockfish. No, I cannot beat max stockfish up a queen.

Fewer players on all the sites, playerbase was small enough that lichess could keep up with reports and they did regularly ban people I reported. It was a steady once every 3-4 weeks. it's even funnier that one of the only games he's won in the last 5 years was against gukesh lol
>>
>>492554391
I honestly can't imagine Gukesh losing. I've had the math at 70-30 in favour of Gukesh while Ding was doing his super secret training, but now it's clear that he's permanently broken. The funny thing is that had Nakamura won the Candidates, Ding would probably be in the top 10, if not top 5 right now.
>>
>>492555087
>The funny thing is that had Nakamura won the Candidates, Ding would probably be in the top 10, if not top 5 right now.
expand on this
>>
>>492555232
I mean if Nakamura had won second place in the 2022 Candidates and played Nepo for the title. Ding was basically a 2790-2810 player between 2018 and 2023 and only got mindbroken due to the pressure of the world championship. Magnus' withdrawal and Nakamura's loss in the last round of the Candidates effectively ended his career.
>>
>>492555087
>>492556252
Those are some bold claims anon. He barely played after covid hit and he didn't play too well at the Candidiates but the spectacular Fabi collapse + Hikaru choke landed him in an accidental world shampionship.
I'm still mad at Magnus for the way he handled giving up the crown because Fabi wouldn't have jobbed that hard if Carlsen abdicated officialy before or even during the first couple of rounds of the Candidates.
>>
>>492557048
That's why I said he'd be a top 10, if not a top 5 player. Maybe he was overrated by 2022, but there's no way he was weaker than 2760.
>>
>>492556252
>>492557263
I see and I'm inclined to agree but I mean the top ratings are basically just a reflection who held it together mentally the best in the past few events. I'd be interested in an alternate timeline where Magnus stood on bussiness and never decided to play the candidates lol something tells me he'd still be at the top, probably hit 2900 peak
>>
Should I study a bunch of theory, or just pick a basic opening and spam it to git gud?
>>
>>492558801
I think shitters who autistically drill mainlines have it all wrong. For instance, if you play e4e5 with black, you should memorize refutations to gambits, but with something like the closed ruy you should focus more on structures and thematic ideas.
>>
>>492558801
neither bro. you should stay away from theory for a long time and just spam blitz/bullet, focusing on developing your fast intuitive ability first before you develop higher order thinking. for the opening, just play what feels good, find spots that look natural for your pieces and harmonize them so they work together well.
>>
>>492558801
it doesnt matter which one you pick, you'll reach your genetic limit and be stuck eventually either way

nta but i've been telling people to play bullet instead of slow chess for what feels like years now
the common advice is a high-iq larp. "chess is a game for intellectuals, if you're going to learn it the PROPER way, you need to play a PROPER format like rapid or classical!! the slower the better!!!!!"
and honestly i can't see how that attitude doesn't severely hinder the general population's ability to actually get good at chess
"i need extra time to think" is a crutch, not some kind of legitimate strategy for intellectuals. and if you train yourself to make good moves only under the condition that mommy grants you infinite time to get there, you'll never actually get good. you have to be held to the fire and be forced to make good decisions if you truly want to learn
>>
if i want to play rapid on lichess, is there any specific time control i should either prioritise or avoid? for instance because of predisposition towards cheats, shitters...

Black is threatening mate in 2 starting with Qh3+. Bf4 looks like the only move to at the very least slow black down. After Qxf4 I guess Rg1 is the move, because black is threatening to go back to g3, with the same threat as before. Not really sure what's going on after that. If Rg1 isn't working, there's also, Qa4+ followed by Rxf2, but I don't like that as much.

Bringing out the queen early is fine. After 1.e4 e5 2. Bc4 Nc6 3. Qf3 the engines say the position is equal. If the reputation of an opening is bad enough and it's really not that bad, then it is worth being played. Just for the psychological edge.

As long as white plays h3 and Ne2, the queen on f3 can't be kicked around and it's safe there.

I love how when a titled player gets banned by com all they have to do is run to reddit and post the novel of their life and deny any wrongdoing and reddit will just believe them. Any other person in the world and they'd be like nah you cheated, stfu. But some WFM says it and they've never heard of guilty people claiming to be innocent before. All together they start to chant chesscom bad! Retards and their credentialism.

Notice the manipulative way she starts her post btw. Making it sound like you're sexist and judgmental for correctly believing her play exceeded her ability. Typical of liars to acknowledge up front the unlikelihood of what they're claiming to make themselves seem ultra reasonable and gives themselves a little more credence. The overachieving underdog and feminist angles are also attempts to garner sympathy. She's lying.

It's fun watching Neiksans make excuses for Levy's play. Levy was doing so well until this loser came along and messed road to GM up. I'm unsubscribing from his patreon and telling Levy that unless he fires his coach I won't resubscribe.
>>
>>492614239
Neiksans is the only good thing about levy, anon.
>>
>>492613474
Anytime someone starts writing paragraphs of text it's obvious they cheated. But banning her is bad for Women's Chess so they shouldn't have done it. Shame on .scum

>>492614048
They always write like they're thinking "a chance for Malak, WFM, to show her quality"
>>
>>492614373
Ever since Neiksans started getting more involved , like through commentating the games, Levy has performed much worse.
>>
>>492615019
he's performing amazingly in comparison to his first road to gm, what are you talking about?
>>
>>492615087
He lost to a 2200 last tournament and is 0-1-3 this tournament. In his first tournament he almost got a GM norm! Guess the difference? Neiksans commentating. He's filling Levy's head with bad advice, because he wants Levy to spend years on road to GM so he gets famous.
>>
>>492615547
in his first tournament Neiksans was his coach too
how the fuck can Neiksans commentating influence his game? he's not looking at the stream when he's playing
>>
>>492615637
>>492615637
Neiksans commentating means he's getting more involved in general. Levy did well his first tournaments because he was super motivated, and Neiksans hadn't finished polluting his thinking with whatever crap he wanted. Now that he has Levy is stuck in place, regressing to the old Levy. Mark my words, until Levy gets rid of Neiksans he won't have anymore good tournaments.

Neiksans wants to monopolize Levy's road to GM. He wants it to change from road to GM to coaching to GM. I've been a patreon subscriber since the first tournament, I can see the change in their relational dynamics.

Got accused of cheating for the first time in a while by a 1900 on com. Guy said I was "hacking" with an engine to "predict positions" many moves ahead. I said no sweetie, that's called calculation. He said with full confidence, "I give it 3 hours until you're banned." I linked him to my main and was like actually I'm even stronger than this, this is an underrated alt that I try new things on. Hope that gives you some perspective. He refused to believe the account was mine so I messaged him on it. He informed me on that account too that I was reported and would be gone soon. Logged on today and he was banned. I assume he had started cheating when he thought I was lol.

As rude as that kind of thing is by general consensus, sites and even tournaments really cannot make any kind of new rule to prevent it. It would be a fundamental change to the rules of the game. You'd be talking about some equivalent rule to the amateur freestyle/greco wrestling "technical superiority" win condition. If you watched wrestling this summer olympics you would have seen a few matches end due to this rule. According to "technical superiority" win condition, the match is over if an athlete achieves a 10 point lead in score. No pin has been scored and there is time on the clock remaining but it's instantly match over and win granted to the wrestler who is ahead by 10. In chess I guess you could do some equivalent thing based on material advantage but that's... it's dumb and not necessary.

Yeah, loss by "material superiority" certainly would just kill off chess for good. Imagine if kino games ending in positions like pic related were no longer technically allowed.
One sad thing that i've learned is that such a thing does actually exist in a few small schoolkids tournaments out there, feel pretty sorry for the children that have to play by such a dumb ruleset that takes away the spirit of chess

On a side note, while i was searching for "opera game" in google i managed to find out they made a fucking movie by the same name depicting the life of Paul Morphy. I can't believe i've never heard of this. Has anyone here watched it? Is it any good?

His coach being very good isn't an unqualified plus at all. GM Neiksans can't play at the board for Levy. Meanwhile, Levy's openings don't look good enough to me. They don't suit his style (and this often happens with very strong GM coaches). Levy's old opening repertoire was deemed "not good enough", so the GM comes in with his solid stuff that would do great if GM Neiksans was playing, but Levy is making multiple small mistakes early in the game because coordinating his pieces in quiet positions is not his strength (and it really is Neikans' strength, you can tell from his recaps) and because Neiksans is on his case to be practical with time management, so he can't think through positions that are not intuitive for him.

1. Neiksans has helped Levy build his openings based on the positions and types of openings he already knew. 2. In most of his games since he has been back, Levy has successfully navigated the openings and been in a good position. It’s the mid game where you could argue he’s been making small mistakes (this tournament). This last match is the first time he’s made a key mistake during an opening. Out of what, 30+ matches? And in Neiksans commentary of this game, Neiksans said the opening idea was Levy's, not his.

guess the elo is literally an entire series of him roasting his own chat and their opponents in their games for being dogshit at chess. he reaps what he sows
>>

Nigger are you retarded? He makes a living by making stuff public. Why would he play chess tournaments in secret? He actually doesn't care if he wins or loses because either way zoomers are watching his videos about it. >>
>>492743049
No, let's get to the bottom of this. Why do you claim to be hyper competitive, what do you or have you competed in? You don't play otb, did you play sports growing up?
>>
>>492743526
Yes, I played baseball for years.
>>
>>492705776

>>
>>492743680
Team sports are different, you're going to always have the thought in the back of your mind that regardless of how you play, you can't be solely responsible for the outcome. You're going to evaluate your own performance obviously, but the underlying notion persists. Have you read any sports psychology books? They're considerably more popular amongst people who compete in 'individual' sports, wrestling, mma, golf, whatever. Chess is in the same realm. Basically, you need to completely restructure your perception of what competition really is
>>
>>492743339
Hans is following in the steps of Bobby Fischer. Madnus can't compete.
>>
>>492744809
Haven't read any psych books. I visited a therapist for a bit, but stopped after I stopped getting anything out of it. I like chess because I find it fascinating, so I do puzzles and play against stockfish when the mood strikes and this lets me engage with it in a way that doesn't lead to the possibility of me flying into a rage. Should I work on my deeper issues with competition? Obviously. Do I *need* to do it with this specific area? Not necessarily. I'm perfectly content doing what I'm doing.
>>
Levy getting slowly strangled positionally. Why hasn't he been castling in his matches?
>t. dumb 1200
>>
>>492746186
>Do I *need* to do it with this specific area
No you don't, you're right, it's just chess. I'll put it this way, if you can't mentally handle losing a game of chess on the computer, what else can you not mentally handle? Consider one day using chess as a medium to overcome whatever obstacles you have in the interest of overall improvement in your character. Sports psychology is a pretty underdeveloped genre relatively speaking, lots of 'e-book' type stuff out there. If you ever feel the urge to poke around, I'd recommend downloading PDFs and skimming them to see if they're appealing/worthwhile before reading. General psychology stuff can be useful too, maybe cliche but read a bit of jung if you havent already. Its a good place to start, if anything
>>
Simple, the openings his dumbfuck coach Neiksans give him have him castling later because he wants Levy to fail.
>>
>>492747362

>>
>>492749204
Poor Levy is being played like a fiddle for some extra cash. Shame on Neiksans, FIDE should revoke his GM title for this terrible coaching. There's no planet where a coach should make you go from almost getting a GM Norm to 0.5/5
>>
>>492749396
Not a bad idea. Magnus is probably bored to tears at the moment. Trying to build up an IM into a GM would be a good challenge for him.
>>
>>492747362
>Why hasn't he been castling in his matches?
It's not that uncommon in the caro-kann. It's one of those openings where in certain positions you get blown off the board if you castle.
>>
>>492750034
Magnus has too much self respect to play the lolcow. He does online shit on his own terms, which is why he'd rather hang out with the brahs than farm views for rebi.
>>
>>492749204
No but I think anon from earlier was right that the opening repertoire he has put together with Levi is better suited to Neiksans' play style than Levi's. Neiksans was just saying the openings are fine, and he is absolutely right in the sense that he is getting good positions. But then went on to say the problem is the decision making immediately after the opening phase, which is also absolutely right. However, I'm not sure if slight changes to the opening choices would even help. Levi isn't necessarily better even when he does get the kind of positions he's comfortable with.
>>
>>492705776
At least as a guest, the piece set and board theme are locked.
The default piece set is goofy, I wouldn't want to play with it. So I'm curious if they are literally going to limit any aesthetic changes to paid members, or (very unlikely) creating a free account lets you change them.
>>
>>492750491
Neiksans has been a coach for a long time. He KNOWS that it isn't suited for Levy, but he still gave it to him. He also made sure Levy sticks to these openings and doesn't learn more suitable ones.
>>
>>492749868
Studying and trying to integrate new concepts into my game makes me lose elo (temporarily), so I wouldn't be shocked if something similar happens for Levy

not the anon you're talking to but I originally got into chess because I thought it was good practice for mental game in poker... then I forgot about poker and became obsessed with chess. You know of any good sports psych books? I think I remember someone here recommend "the inner game of tennis".
>>
>>492780660
how champions think by rotella, champions mind by afremow, and inner excellence by murphy are a few that come to mind. Most of the genre really is hit or miss, for example inner excellence I remember being almost annoyingly positive to the point where I didn't really like reading it, but it did seem to have some positive effects in the long run funnily enough. I would recommend searching the genre on goodreads and scrolling the list, if you see one that catches your eye just skim a pdf and make sure its not a pile of trash and you should be good to go. Thats what I did, atleast. Another general recommendation is to try to find books written by people who were actually successful athletes themselves or at the very least somehow directly involved in the coaching of professional athletes.

big assed girls are all fun and games until they turn 27 and gain 250lbs. Now, if your only goal is to produce sturdy warrior offspring, which is noble and commendable, don't let me stop you. Just be prepared to bear the burden of a wife the size of a juvenile grizzly bear. Another thing with #thicc girls is that they take massive dumps, it will ruin your bathroom if you let them move in. For some guys? This is fine. For me? I prefer a woman that shits like a rabbit.

Fat deposition is genetic. An ex of mine had both a tight flat stomach and a massive ass.
>>
>>492829549
>both a tight flat stomach and a massive ass
finding this condition in a woman over the age of 30 is exceptionally rare to the point its hardly worth discussing as anything other than an anecdote. Also, keep in mind that instagram pictures do not count. Another piece of helpful information for the zoomers reading this, any woman with broad shoulders WILL get fatter than you could ever imagine as they age. I must clarify, I am not discouraging you from reproducing with large women. In fact, it is almost impossible to argue against reproducing with large women simply because of how strong the children will be. You just have to be prepared for what you're getting into
>>
>>492830236
The fact that a woman deposits most of her fat in her ass doesn't in any way imply that she'll get fat in her 30s. There's no relation between those two things.
>>
>>492830407
The ass will, eventually, regardless of what your science textbook tells you, refuse to hold the fat and spread it to the rest of the body. Ignore my warnings at your own peril.
>>
it's better when you larp as anthropologists

>>492854650
i know the trick now (after getting blown out(but seems common position) , but doesnt seem a straightforward answer for black, since using the bishop to take back everyone seems to think black has easier development, even though the engine says the positions are equal. odd that chessbrah in his series from 800-1200 elo, no one ever does the center fork trick to him,

but seems like , should just study the italian game, which is more like what he is doing (Rather than ruy lopez){

You are giving dumbass advice lmao

When playing real chess (OTB classical) you and your opponent will have ample time to think.

If you listen to this moron’s advice you will be just as idiotic as he is

You can play bullet for fun when you’re already good but to recommend that for beginners is absolutely horrible advice.
>>
>>492858206
i didn't say i was coaching children who plan on playing tournament classical chess to do this
the vast, vast, vast majority of people who play chess are not part of that group. you're attacking a strawman because you have no argument otherwise. cya pest don't @ me anymore
>>
>>492858206
fast chess improves intuition, slow chess improves calculation. to be a good player, you need both, but the in my opinion, the majority of adult improvers suffer from a lack of intuition, they constantly miss shit because they have zero board awareness unless they deliberately check every legal move like a computer.
>>
>>492860064

They're getting shit on by Arabian royalty, aren't they?
>>
>>492864326
tactics are for drilling specific and rare patterns that might happen once per game. it won't train your intuition like playing out an entire game from start to finish and all that it entails. faster controls are better because you can fit in a lot more of them and expose yourself to many more patterns than if you just spend 4 hours straight slow thinking in one classical game.
>>
>>492864326
the difference is bullet trains you to see how a real full game of chess unfolds and you get a deeper (and better) understanding of where tactics pop up in real life scenarios
if you drill puzzle rush all day you're training your brain to finish solved positions and that's not how real chess works. in real chess you need to learn how to make moves that weaken your opponent's jenga tower while also not weakening your own. and then you need to be able to recognize and capitalize on weaknesses as they unfold in real time
and since games happen so fast in bullet, you can instantly pop open the analysis board and ask the computer if you missed anything. sometimes you missed an unreasonably deep line. sometimes you missed an obvious tactic. but you will remember these because they literally just happened to you a minute ago. this is real valuable learning
anyway, puzzles have their place too and they certainly have value. but if we're going to generally throw around ideas about which one is "better" for getting good at chess, it's definitely bullet unless you're a classical player

Hello /chess/, >>>/vg/vrg/ tourist here
Reminder that over there we are regularly playing chess in vrchat and that next session is today at 21:30CEST/19:30UTC (~3h from now)
We'll play 1h of chess before switching to mahjong, but people who wants to stay for chess can keep the instance alive if they want to.
> I don't have VR and what's the point?
You can play without vr as well, we use vrchat which also have a non-vr client. The main appeal is to play with different people in a virtual environment, which means you can talk (or type if you don't want to use a mic), spectate and move from table to table.
The table implementation also have (in-game) replay, so you can analyze the game afterward with your opponent.
> What do I need to be able to join?
Basically to make a vrchat account and to have the game started (you can just install it from steam), I recommend to make a direct vrchat account rather than using your steam account for in-game log in as it makes joining easier.
I will post an instance link when the event starts, while logged in the vrchat website you can click on "invite me" and you will get a notification in-game to join the instance.
Besides maybe getting familiar with the controls you don't need anything else really
> How do we play? (time settings, ...)
We usually play with 10min +5sec, but it's up to the player to set it up. The timer reaching 0 says "gg" but doesn't force to end the game, so you can agree to ignore the timer if you prefer
> What's the skill level?
According to the other host the average /vrg/ chess skill ranges from 800 to 1500 chess.com
> NA hours when?
NA chess instances are on 10pm EST on Wednesdays

Idiotic thing to say and not what solid means. Solid is Magnus or Karpov's style of play. If you want a synonym it's "concrete." It just means not staking the game on risky decisions, but making strong common sense moves and trusting that your opponent can't do the same.

No.
Here's another example of "solid". Bobby has been angling up to this point for an attack on the king. He played Nh5 earlier, baiting Bxh5. His idea was probably using the open file. But later, with his Queen on h4, he played Ng4 instead, again baiting Boris to take so that he could get the pawn on g4. Why? Because it's more solid. If the rook on the open file hadn't resulted in the sort of attack he wanted he would have been left with simply a ruined pawn structure. Now he still has some pressure on the king while restoring his pawn integrity. This is solid play, and as you can see, not passive.
But the solid move I want to highlight comes in pic's position. So he's you've got this pressure against the king, and Boris just played Bf4. How do you, as in literally you, continue? Analyze the board before you read on.
Maybe you want Be5, which Boris would be forced to take. You can take back with a rook lift and maybe get an attack going when you double up on the h file.
Bobby plays Qf7 here. This is an extremely solid move that immediately makes his positional advantage clear. Bobby completely owns the dark-squared diagonal. It's solid, but no less "aggressive" or "active" than if he had tried to mate. The game is still being actively decided in Bobby's favor.
The rest of the game Boris tries defuse Bobby's dark-squared advantage but Bobby simply allows him to make concessions so he can find new advantages. The whole time risking nothing and playing solidly.

Its a jobova london when the knight goes to c3. Click through lichess database and find a line you like. The immediate c5 break can get somewhat messy but its fine. More solid is e6 intending to play c5 later. There are three things not to play into. A line that jobova london players enjoy is the kingside pawnstorm when the bishop goes to f5. They will try to fork your queen and rook with the knight going to b5. You can stop this with na6 and reroute later. One last trap is the poison pawn on b2. Dont touch it, leave it alone. Picrel. qxb2 na4 and you can resign

Obviously the position is from the Philidor and I could learn it by memorizing some theory, but I want to learn how to formulate a plan in this type of position.
In my eyes the only pawn break white has is e5 which seems very precarious to do. Black can play on the Queenside and has very straightforward plans that I'm unable to stop.

365chess.com (stop using chessgames, it's cancer now)
Here's a good example of why you should always ask yourself what your opponent's plans are. A natural move here for Boris would be Qe8, keeping an eye on the bishop so you don't have to recapture with a pawn. After all, why Qf8? He can't be worried about the c5 pawn. It's because Bobby's plan in that case was Nb5, you have to move the rook, then Nd6. An unstoppable fork. All because you didn't trust your opponent to have a bigger idea than taking the bishop and put the Queen simply one square wrong.

1) Arthurs is a terrible coach and will make sure Levy never hits GM.
2) Levy's paypigs have already booked him full. He talked about how he had to start rejecting people and raising rates because he was full.

I'm not, he talked about it in one of the Levy matches he was commentating.
>>
>>492921893
i was literally listening to him while playing kingdom come deliverance anon, he said he has no students besides levy rozman currently and is not looking for anyone else, and wouldn't accept low rated students anyway

e4 c6 is already the caro.

if someone plays c5, and move to pushes it to c4, is that still sicilian or some random retardation?
>>
>>492922372
No it's not, it's the c3 poison reversed.
>>
>>492922612
>>492922720
e4 c5 is already the sicilian regardless of the fact that Black might play some nonsense later. Same thing applies to e4 c6.

You have to admit it would be pretty pedantic to call this a caro kann position. Shockingly enough its in the database

Not possible, this is a fake game. MicaMucic is known as the unbeatable 1100 because they've never lost a game.

so everyone on lichess is indian ? is the entire country playing chess

they always want take-backs
>>
>>492908106
John chose to make a career out of teaching and coaching, and developing chessable originally. He sold chessable for a very decent profit at probably most advantageous time during late stages of covid boom. With all of that success it would be difficult to justify going for a title that wouldn't help his career any further at this point.
>>
>>492926656
>so everyone on lichess is indian
Yes
>>
>>492926656
A LOT of lichess players are indian, actually.
I don't play on lichess because of that. I play on chessarena, started playing on the ICC recently, and sometimes chesscom. For the analysis I use my own PC, local stockfish is stronger anyway and you generate cool reports
>>
>>492926656
Play 24-48h correspondence, only Whites and no cheaters. Move conformation so no need to do takebacks. Pure chess like it was played for centuries.
>>
>>492927756
>correspondence
>no cheaters
lmaaaaooooooooooo
>>
>>492927850
Maybe at 2500 but never come across someone playing a bunch of best moves in a row in hundreds of games in the 1500+range. I analeyes all my games
>>
>>492927756
>>492927850
I've had the same experience. Correspondence players are the whitest and most honest by far. Likely a correlation between the instant gratification of cheating and faster time controls
>>
>>492929224
Likely true, I want to play in the Aryan Yasser spirit of chess. Play the best moves and fail on your own merits not playing meme shit like the cow, hoping your opponent falls for some bullshit.

No I play the Blackmar–Diemer and Blowfish says its -2. But yeah you should know theory to the middlegame+ ideas to continue or you'll get blown off the board.

I found some 2000 chesscom who's a "professional coach" and takes 50 bucks per hour.
Do people like that even have students? I can get a fucking FM or IM for 10 bucks per hour on lichess.

https://lichess.org/@/TheOnoZone
there's a guy on lichess who's only 1800 (that's lichess rating, OTB he's like 1600) offering coaching.
>>
>>492935654
no way that 1800 lichess is 1600 otb
when I was 1800 lichess, I was like 1300 chess.com
>>
>>492935654
No way anyone actually hired him kek
>>
>>492935967
someone posted his blog earlier in the thread, apparently he is.
>>492936413
he has a whole website dedicated to his coaching, with testimonials
https://www.theonozone.com/coaching
>>
nothing wrong with hiring that guy if he has cheap rates and the client in question is dogshit at chess which most people are
his website looks good which is a good sign. doesn't look like some outdated boomer site

It seems in certain situations and positions I stop even thinking about what moves the opponent is going to make in reaction to mine... at which point I guess I'm not even really playing chess. How do I stop being retarded like this? It's usually when I'm hyper focused on something like trapping a piece or even just mindlessly adding attackers onto a pawn.
